What enrages me is buying something, finding out it's old, and then my partner attempts to return it at 7 AM--only to be completely ignored. Not a single employee in the store acknowledged him. Instead, the cashier was too busy having a flirty conversation with an older man, blatantly ignoring my partner who was standing right there. The only person who showed any decency was the black security guard, who acknowledged my black partner and directed him to the ONLY register. Even then, the cashier took her sweet time--several minutes--before acknowledging my partner because she still was flirting with that man! This is the second time I've purchased old meat that's been repackaged with a new date. This kind of behavior is absolutely unacceptable and disgusting. Just because my partner doesn't speak Spanish does not give anyone the right to ignore him. I am beyond disgusted. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. This is the Compare Foods Supermarket that I typically go to to grab any of my tea leaves and other adults and ends. This location is off of Arrowood Road in South Charlotte and in my opinion, it is one of the best Compare Foods Supermarket locations in Charlotte. It is a larger location and they always have a wide variety of the items that you may be looking for. It is located in a shopping center, where the Compare Foods is the focal point. So it's great! There is plenty of parking available so that is not an issue at all. The staff inside the market are very helpful when looking for items and checking out. I came back here after many years due to the fact another Compare Foods opened up in town recently. However, this place hasn't really had a good reputation over time. Especially in the area it's situated in the city of Charlotte. The "supermarket" itself wasn't very clean or even kept up to code in my general opinion. However there is one redeeming quality about this place as a whole, the selection. We go to Compare Foods only because nowhere else had the vegetables we needed to make our dishes at home, so for example if we need a certain kind of beef, cilantro, and so on we would venture to a nearby Compare Foods. The service was average at best, not bad. But nothing to write home about. Something I like to add, While I was getting some vegetables I kept on sensing a foul smell. I couldn't escape this odd smell no matter where I went. I wouldn't necessarily give the red flag to this location however I would recommend the newer place that opened up further up the street from here as opposed to this location in particular. read more

If you've ever wondered where Charlotte's Hispanic community does their food shopping, you can wonder no more. Compare is chock full of Hispanic specialties and imported items. I was very pleased with the beer choices, which included Modelo, Pacifico and Corona Familiar. Large produce section looks very fresh. And who could resist the end cap with votive candles? Spanish language magazines at the checkouts. Prices were about what I expected - slightly more than Wal-Mart but much less than Harris Teeter. read more

I enjoy ethnic based supermarkets. Compare foods features mostly Hispanic foods plus the run of the mill supermarket shelf food products. A great place for Hispanic based spices, sauces, condiments, cheeses, vegetables, and fruits and Hispanic packaged baked goods . These product prices are moderate but many of the other canned and boxed shelf foods are priced higher in my opinion than other supermarkets. Staff seem friendly, place appears clean. A little restaurant at the back of the store. I did not fully inspect the fresh meat so I can't judge the quality. I have been to other supermarkets which I like better since I like to shop for Hispanic products as well as other international foods. read more

I always enjoy going to Compare Foods, the staff pays close attention to their product and very attentive to customers. Although many of them don't speak English they are usually very nice. Yesterday I did have one of the ladies catch an attitude because I didn't purchase the plantains in the back at the deli. I only wanted to quote the price on them as I was preparing my menu for Cinco de Mayo. None of the food had pricing on them and everything was in Spanish. Unfortunately, I do not speak Spanish so the only way I can find out the price is by asking. What a terrible experience I had. Manager Mike was very rude and not professional at all. Prices are more than overpriced. Meat (my experience is not fresh) a lot of products are expired! Please check everything. I won't come back. Please do not run your credit card! Or enter your phone number and if you still want to risk, always ask for your receipt! I was double charged on an item that was more than overpriced. And they told me I was not able to receive a refund because I did not ask a printed receipt. The cashier told me to enter my email address and I should receive it by email. And I did. That when I realized I was double charged. Honestly: they do what they want and mark prices with no regulations. For example: Any laundry item you pay anywhere (let's say it's like between $3-$5 than any other grocery store) Thank that they have competition available now. Compare foods is my go to when it's time to make authentic Latin American meals in my house. The store is always immaculately clean like most Latin supermarkets I've been to. There's a real pride in what they do. On this visit I did notice myself repeating the same phrase over and over "Damn, that's expensive" Prices have seemed to go up and up. The "good deals" are few and far between now. Aldi, seems to have them beat now with their produce prices. This review is mainly for the restaurant in the back of the grocery store. Compare foods as a grocery store is great, they have a wide variety of produce at extremely low prices. Went to the restaurant in the back, basically you can choose 1 or 2 meats with rice and salad for a combo. There were other items like soup as well. 6.99 for one meat and 8.99 for a two meat combo. I got the chicken and pigsfeet. I dont know what the dishes were but they were fucking delicious. Got it togo bc i wasnt hungry at the time so ate it for dinner that night. The chicken breast was tender and bursting with flavor. The pigsfeet was flavorful and the vegetables in the braise was so good. I'm going back again to see what else they have. So I fully admit that I'm a food geek, but you could seriously drop me off for an afternoon here and I would have a ball. The produce outshines all other grocery stores locally by a mile in quality/price and you can get cool stuff that you can't usually find at the farmers market or grocery stores. Like Bee said, awesome prices on usually expensive stuff like limes, avocados and plantains. They also have tons of different kinds of fresh tortillas (and you don't have to buy a stack of 100 stale ones!!), masa and different cuts of meat. I went in search of amarillo paste (yellow chile paste from Peru) and I had a hard time finding it because I didn't realize there wasn't just one aisle of hispanic spices/food products but two, so it was divided between Mexican and South American! Now I know, and Jackpot!! If anyone wants to kill me, Compare Foods has Cilantro bouillon cubes, something I had never seen before. They had an amazing selection of Goya products- more than you ever knew existed and I've been in a lot of supermercados and bodegas. They even have 4 different kinds/sizes of frozen empanada shells! I could go on forever - all different kinds of awesome foods you rarely see. They even had yuppie stuff like almond milk, so I bought my whole grocery list there. I was the only white gringa there, and that didn't bother me one bit. They speak english if you need them to. I can't wait to go back, and apparently I will try the flan! read more

Bought some frozen meat here and the meat was molded!! Yes people molded!! Disgusting and horrible!! How this place is still in business is beyond me!! Previously I bought dog food which was expired and went back and made a complaint. All the dog food on the shelf was expired!! As far as the meat I approached the manager and he certainly had no clue what to do!! He asked me if I wanted a sticker!! I responded WTF am I gonna do with a sticker?! The security guard and loss prevention officer were shocked at the managers stupidity and told him to go check the shelves this meat came off from; all the packages of meat were molded!! read more

First, I would like to clear up some confusion about this supermarket. If you read the history behind this chain, it was originally opened on Long Island by a Hispanic family who wanted to offer a variety of Hispanic foods along with more common American items. Compare Foods largely caters to a Spanish speaking population and many of their employees are *bilingual.* I had a wonderful cultural experience shopping here. I was exposed to fruits, spices and pastries I had never seen before. However, if you are used to the traditional American market and feel uncomfortable being surrounded by people and/or languages that are outside American tradition, you will likely not enjoy your shopping experience. I bought some fresh seafood, tons of amazing fruit and glanced at the breads and bakery section (the calories tend to stick to me even if I don't eat them). There was literally a wall of spices and dried fruits that spanned the length of a full aisle. It was cool to look at so many things I'd never seen before. Prices were no cheaper nor more expensive than what I experience in a local Harris Teeter. Free food tastings could be found in the frozen food and bakery section! read more

Are you looking for Hispanic goods? Well this place is your one stop shop! I mean really, it's got it all from brand name to some obscure Hispanic brand that only a Latino would know about. Also it's pretty big and smells kind of funky from all the spices in here if that's your thing. What did I go here for? I came here for a big ass hunk of flan. Yes you read that right, they have a cool pastry section and flan is one of my favorite desserts. Smooth creamy, and sugary this flan is just as good as anywhere else and a few bucks gets you a huge slice! Everything else? I have no idea since this is pretty much just a giant flan stand to me, but the selection for people who actually do groceries here looks quite expansive. So uh come here if you're looking to make some Hispanic cuisine and can't find some obscure ingredient, or if you're like me and love flan. I love Compare Foods. They remind me of the supermarkets back home in Mexico. Great produce, butcher and seafood sections. You will find EVERYTHING, some stuff you've never heard of and some stuff that makes you go, "wtf?". This is where I do a large portion of shopping since I cook a lot of Mexican (and other ethnic food). There really isn't much I can write that will make the variety of products they carry any justice. You might as well go find a weird recipe that calls for as many ingredients that you've never heard of, much less pronounce, then go find it all in Compare! I can just drive to south blvd & purchase the same can of beans for about two dollars less. I DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR ANYONE TO PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM THE MEAT DEPARTMENT !! When him and his team got the truth not once did anyone apologize to me or my children. That was the worst experience to be accused especially while i had my kids with me. I'm not going to lie - this is a pretty big international foods supermarket. In fact, it even has a "restaurant" in the back with foods from different countries (I wouldn't recommend it, though, as it lacked flavor). However, I didn't see much variety in the foods and spices that they sold in the store. I'm Puerto Rican and all I found was Cafe Bustelo! However, while it is well stocked they are definitely price gouging. $.45 for a pack of kool-aid, cereal $5 per box, bag of chips $4.99, canned goods normally .89 goes for $2.99, Bacon $8.99 a pack. Lemons $3 for a dollar are the size of prunes. Frozen foods are full of ice as if they are freezer burned. Essential brand products are marked higher by atleast 25%. read more

Okie dokie, soooo, i generally go to harris teeter near where i live to grocery shop and im always complaining about how much im spending on groceries so i took the advice of a friend and tried out compare foods she informed me that she buys all of her meats,fruits,and veggies at compare foods and come out way cheaper. So with putting that to the test i would definetly have to say i would get all of my fruits and veggies here but not meats, the meats in my opinion did not appear to look very fresh. The thing i did love about this store is when it came to the fruit is they have all of the exotic fruits that you generally cant find in any other grocery store like passion fruits, sour sop, pomegranite, and the list goes on. You can also purchase things like mint leaves in bulk i normally can not find mint leaves in bulk but they have them here. Yesterday we had rain that was coming down pretty hard,after purchasing my items at Compare Foods on Arrowood Road. First, let me say I do not shop a compare foods .I just needed some items while my dinner was cooking around the corner. I shop at Publix and Aldi's! Very clean stores! Compare Food has a" smell like dead rats". "State inspection needs to come in this store and clean it up." When I got to my car someone had parked their car too close to mine where I could not even put the key in my car door to unlock it. . Now! I'm upset because this is my second problem at this store". They had already ripped me off when I purchase some carrots that were bad. And all the manager said is I'm sorry! I took a picture of the vehicles license plate tag but it only captured half of it. I went to the man at the security desk in the front of the store. After being drenched in the rain I told him I cannot get in my car and this is half of the vehicles license plates tag. He said to me he would handle it, after waiting 10 15 minutes nothing from him I went inside the store I rate! ...and said what is taking the security so long for him to find the person that has me blocked in? ...so I can go home like a normal people do when they go to the grocery store? I should not have to wait on someone else is purchase their products for me to leave" because I'm blocked and soaking wet. He was nowhere to be found.. it it looks as though he was going to each customer asking them who parked his truck to block someone in instead of going out there just as I did and at least write down the tag number! Dud! Then announcement on the intercom to move their car. I was security at Duke Energy for 7 years and this is not the protocol! I became very angry and I'll rate loudly! By this time everyone in the store is looking at me. Everyone that was looking I asked them can you help me can you help me can you help me it was at least four girls standing there looking at me. All of a sudden they didn't speak any English they couldn't give me an answer to my question ? So I asked them to move themselves if they can't help me no security guard still to be found. Finally he walks up and I'm cussing now. He seemed to be upset of the fact that I was cursing but why should I be kind over someone that's not helping me move my car and I'm wet. Then he said okay well I'll go and take a picture of the license plate I went duh! I thought you was security he said I am security I said why haven't you made an announcement that this car needs to be moved he said okay well I'm going to get the tag now. I'm not really security but I am going to try to help you it's 20 minutes now! Finally I see all of these different ladies coming to the front door but no one's apologizing while they are getting in the car that block in. I really wish the health department and state inspection clean this store out and get someone in there that is competent and bilingual! I would never shop at this store ever again. So my first time at Compare foods was yesterday with my husband, who is Puerto Rican. We have been in search of spanish foods in Charlotte for years now and found a few but nothing spectacular. This place, in my opinion, was amazing in terms of having things that NO OTHER supermarket will have. The reason i gave 4 stars is their pricing is not the greatest. some of their average items that you can find at walmart were more expensive, but we didnt buy those items since we can get them else where. we simply went here for the items that no one else has. we bought fresh meat from the ladies in the back and we havent cooked it yet but from what i could see, it looks fine. the best part for me was the HOT pernil and arroz con gondulez...it was melt in your mouth delicious!! i was also able to buy all the things i need to make Coquito (Puerto Rican egg nog). so that was a plus! overall great place to go to find items not in other stores. read more

I had two pastries from the on-premises bakery. Both were fresh and delicious. The self-serve system takes a bit of figuring out - take a tray from the shelf, put a paper on it, grab a set of tongs, and head over to the display cases. Place your items on the tray. Then go back to the counter and pay for your items right there in the bakery. I chose a strawberry turnover and a pineapple-filled popover. Both were fresh, crusty golden brown, and tasty. read more

The worst supermarket ever to shop for groceries. Overpriced, unhealthy, poor quality of meats and some vegetables. I decided to stop to buy a cuban sandwich yesterday. The lady was not pleasant at all, waited patiently for ever, but I got it and asked for coffee as well. I had the silly mask on all the time, took it off to drink some of the coffee while I was shopping for a few groceries. I have some health issues and I have to eat or have sugar when I need it. Suddenly their mask "patrol" came to order me to wear the mask. I explained I was just drinking their coffee, rudely again order me to put it on. I even had it in my hand!! But to them, it was not enough, I could drink my coffee in their tables, but not while shopping. I had never been treated this way anywhere else. It had to be a Hispanic place, there is a reason why I don't shop in these businesses, as much I like to support my culture, it is not worth it, they treat you as garbage. Even the customer in front of us, was complaining loudly about their attitude. Then the cashier also pointed to my face while I was still far from the cash register and seeing that these two men, employees, were still talking to me about it. I really felt harassed in this supermarket, I will never set a foot there ever again. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM SHOPPING HERE! I have been living in the neighborhood now for over 3 years and frequently shop at BOTH locations, which are owned by the same person. He is USUALLY very friendly, attentive to his employees and customers and very helpful. However, I recently just had a baby and visited the store to purchase formula for my baby. Seeing To as how I had ran out of vouchers for the month, I gathered up all of the coupons I could find from Simalac sent to me via mail. To my surprise they would NOT accept my coupons based on me not having an ID on my at the time. I could not understand why that mattered when they accept the WIC vouchers without ANY ID. Despite me showing the employee numerous of documents with My name and my sons name on it, including my EBT card, they still refused to honor the coupons. What was most disrespectful and really showed his true colors is the fact that he would NOT even come out and speak with me to explain this policy. I have over 15 years of experience in retail management and am very familiar with the coupon redemption process through companies as such. You do not have to provide copies of ID to redeem these coupon as a retailer so please tell me why you would deny an infant formula for a family who is clearly struggling (using government assistance) !!!
