If your computer is broken right now. Don't panic! And don't give these people your precious computer. I'm glad I waited a bit after getting my computer back from them before writing a review. I went in with a small corner of my touch screen cracked. I had more problems when I got it back than when I brought it in. The touch screen they installed is clearly cheaper and of lower quality than the one it originally came with. And the glue they set it with didn't hold. My touch screen was literally falling off. They disconnected 2 of my usb ports. I had a computer savvy friend re attach my usb ports and glue my screen back on. She did it for free, did it better, and was a thousand times more trustworthy than the people at computer zone. read more

This was the worst retail experience of my life. My 18-month old HP 19" laptop wasn't turning on. I took it to these guys. Big mistake. I was working online and the PC died and wouldn't turn back on. They told me my motherboard was fried and would need to be replaced. They quoted me $490 and after thinking it over and researching for 2 weeks, I decided to pay it. Then there was a delay in the shop being able to find the motherboard and they called me a week later and let me know, that was okay. Then there was another week they still couldn't find the part and I was planning to cancel the order, but they got a hold of a motherboard. Cool. A full two weeks went by for shipping time. Do they get their parts from China? This is week 5 now since I had paid them for the part. They called to tell me it arrived on Thursday but I wasn't able to pick up the laptop til the next Tuesday. I'm pretty miffed at this point and ask them in light of the delays if they would remove the last hour of labor ($65) from my total. The guy goes ballistic on me. He says there is no way it could have taken that long because he is looking at the receipt. He leans over the counter and in front of the whole store, calls me a liar. Loudly. I felt awful. I asked to see the invoice so we could compare the date, since I paid up front for the part. He wouldn't let me see it and was going on about the ethics of agreeing to pay for services rendered. I was mortified. He could have simply refused to take off the final hour. I asked to speak to someone else since me and the guy were obviously having friction and he told me to call his boss. So I did and his boss agreed to take off the last $65. I took my pc and left. The motherboard failed 3 days later. My boyfriend took it to their Mission address, I couldn't go back. They repaired it. These guys suck so bad I am surprised they are still in business. I guess there are enough new UCSC students that can be fleeced that they are able to sustain? When I first went there I was seeking an adapter from my USB port ; was interested in a used one. They quoted me a price of $34 & up; being the frugal shopper I am, checked around, found the same new adapters for $28-$32. I am not going to let one mis adventure to a PC repair shop stop me from another try. this time though, my friend needed his laptop repaired, when he went back to pick it up, they said that he owed so much money on it so he left it there. They didn't give him a quote or any of the business formalities. I feel bad because I took him there! As a fact, it was a weird deal. I walk in there, the owner runs behind this card table grabbing aseat, hyming,hawing, not knowing a stich about computers but he takes my laptop into the backroom partitioned but I am able to see what is going on. The back room boys tell him what to say to me, even though I am hearing the conversation, he comes back out with a slightly different story. Do NOT give these guys your business! They're a rip off and they damage your internal hardware without telling you!! I brought my desktop PC in around November 2012 because the power supply burnt out. They replaced it with what they claimed was a great one and charged me 109$ for it, not including the labor. Fast forward 7 months and my power supply has burnt out, again! Now that I'm in SF I brought it to a guy I trust and have gone to much more often. Here's what he found when he opened my PC: - The power supply computerzone charged me 109$ for was an extremely cheap, $30 power supply that had been shoved into a computer it didn't fit into - My guy called me over and showed me multiple internal parts of my computer that had been broken. More specifically, there are clips so this cable can snap into that board and stay in place. More than one of those clips were broken so the cables could just fall out anytime and I'd have to open my tower to get my computer running again I have not tried any other computer repair place in Santa Cruz than this, but honestly, your wallet and your computer are better off with you following a youtube tutorial than letting these guys get their hands on your device. read more

6/27/17 - Update RadMax 380W PSU that Computer Zone installed in July 2014 finally died 6/26/17. The technician at the new shop (see my excellent review for the new place) discovered that the vibration noise that the RadMax PSU was making shortly after it was installed by Computer Zone, was due to the fact that the power supply harness was missing. The PSU was being held in with three screws, making it unstable and causing it to vibrate against the metal side panel at power on. The rest of the screws were missing, as was the plate covering the PSU on the outside. I wonder what else they stole from my computer while it was there? The new PSU installed today 6/27/17 has MORE power, and costed less than the $79 Computer Zone charged for the cheaper RadMax PSU that clearly didn't fit my machine as evidenced by how it fit in my tower! Expect to be over charged here, and hope that your machine doesn't come out worse than it went in. Be prepared for the run around, phones calls not being returned, and BS lies when you question what doesn't add up. Informed consumers are their worst nightmares! The "salesman" tried to sell me a VGA cable as new for 14.95 and it had dust on it and wasn't even in a bag. After that he said he couldn't sell it to me unless I provide a home address and contact information. When I declined he said it was required. To be honest, I'm furious with the treatment I received from Computer Zone. Not only did employees continually condescend to me both in person and over they phone, they held onto my laptop for upwards of three weeks (after originally telling me that it would likely be fixed in 4-7 days.) I went in knowing exactly what the problem was, and was assured that they knew exactly what needed to be done in order to fix it. They said that all that needed to be done was to order the part, open the laptop, and replace the part. When I called about two and a half weeks after bringing my laptop to them to check on the progress, they hadn't even ordered the part yet! They also moved my laptop from the location at which I dropped it off to their other Santa Cruz location without telling me, which isn't that big a deal but still made me very uncomfortable. When I got it back, not only was it extremely dusty/dirty, but the part that needed replacing (the charging port) did not even work properly (the charger now has to be held at a certain angle inside the port in order for the laptop to charge) and I am not bringing it back to them because frankly I don't trust them. read more

Summary: This place charged me $200 to keep my laptop for 10 days and fix nothing. MANAGER WAS ALSO DISRESPECTFUL My laptop died roughly two weeks ago, right when I needed it most. I took it to computer zone because it was very close to my house and I need a relatively quick fix. Boy was that the wrong choice. They charged me 80 dollars right up front for the diagnostics (which made sense to me-- my laptop isn't a cheap model) but then came back and charged me 120 more the day after because "my laptop was complicated". While I'm in the store, the kid at the counter KEEPS trying to get me to turn over my phone for a screen replacement (at $250+) even though I keep telling him the one tiny crack doesn't bother me (RED FLAG). Nearly a week goes by and no one contacts me. Finally, I call them and the guy says "they're still sourcing the part" even though it's a power jack you can literally buy from amazon. A second after I hang up the phone, he calls back having "magically" just been called by their buyer. He says this part (which costs 20-45 dollars) will cost 70 plus shipping and handling, and that I need to pay those before they even order the part, which will take 5 days to arrive(RED FLAG). Next day, I go into the store and say I've found somewhere cheaper and I want my laptop back. The guy says that MY LAPTOP IS IN PIECES (aka they've been storing my expensive ass laptop in pieces) and shoos me out of the store saying I should "come back tomorrow" (RED FLAG AGAIN). Later that day, he calls me saying he doesn't want to put the laptop back together and he'll order the part and put it in and "only charge me if it works". 5 days later I get a call saying that the part didn't work, but it will still take them another 24 hours to hand my laptop back to me. That's where we are as of now------ down 200 dollars, 2 weeks without a laptop, and the one I got back is likely even more f*cked up than before. Thanks Computer Zone. read more

I'm surprised at all these negative reviews - I had a very good experience with them. I had a close call nearly hitting a deer in my car here in SC, and had to brake so hard everything in my car slammed against the dashboard - including my bag with MacBook Pro in its case. When I opened it up, it had a small fissure or crack running through the glass (only the glass) of the screen. I called their major competitor in town, told them what was up, and they said that regardless of whether or not the LCD was cracked (I told them it wasn't), it was still going to cost $600 minimum for replacing the whole screen unit--that is, for the part ONLY, and that there was NO OTHER POSSIBLE WAY TO FIX THE CRACKED SCREEN WITHOUT BUYING THE $600 UNIT. "They're not made to be replaced separately, it's impossible." They also quoted me $134/hr labor. I said, "Ok, thanks, bye" and called Computer Zone. They told me that the part was easily gotten for $179, totally not necessary to replace the whole thing, and they charge $64/hr for labor (they gave me 10% off that amount for labor, for good will since I was a new customer). Once the part arrived and I brought my laptop in, they completed the job perfectly in 2 hours. That doesn't seem like the same business described in any of these reviews AT ALL! I recommend them highly over some of the other places in town. They were completely honest about the pricing, didn't charge more than the actual part (I researched it), labor was 1/2 the cost at the other place, with a discount on top of it, job done perfectly and on time. read more

These were some of the most unhelpful people I've ever encountered. They were friendly and knowledgeable enough, but it felt like they scammed me for 10 times the amount of money it would've taken to fix my computer. My computer stopped working one day so I took it to Computer Zone to have them give me a quote on how much it would be to fix it. I had to pay upfront for like 2 hours work which was pretty expensive (I forget how much). They didn't call me so I went in a week later and they said they needed more money and it would take more time to see what was wrong with it. I gave them more money, they didn't call, so I came back a few days later and the motherboard was fried so they said I needed a new computer and tried to sell me the used computers they sell in their shop. Then I asked them to take the photos, music, and documents off of my computer and they said they could do it for like 50 bucks or something like that. I came back in a few days and I had to buy a external hard drive with my stuff on it, and when I got home everything was password protected and I had no idea what the passwords were. I took it back and had to pay even more to have them remove the passwords, and when I took it back home and plugged it into my new computer (which I finally purchased from somewhere else) only the first "layer" of passwords were removed and I was never able to access any of my photos, music, or documents when I specifically told them "I just want my music, photos, and documents." They gave me my computer back disassembled in a box (which is useless to me), a harddrive with usleless files (which is usless to me), and I had to pay them over 300 dollars for this. I got great advice about how to troubleshoot and fix a circuit issue on a broken Microscope. The technician at the downtown location was patient and knowledgeable about circuits. Based on his advice I was able to get things working again on my own. I'd use there service again based on the good customer service and knowledge of the technician. read more

A SLAP IN THE FACE!!! This is the worst and most dishonest business of any kind that i have ever patronized. thank god for internet review sites, so i can tell someone about this. first of all, i was buying a used laptop and the guy was giving me his sales pitch, and i asked him if it burned dvds. BURNED them, not played them, and he said yes, so i bought it. shame on me, because when i got home i found that it did not actually burn dvds. ok, i should have paid more attention, so i'll eat that one, but there is no excuse for LYING to sell a product. then, after about 43 days, several keys on the keyboard quit working and doing strange things, so i thought cool, i am still under warranty, and took it in. haha! the guy (bearded older guy) was so condescending, i thought maybe i was in an episode of one of those shows where they see how much crap a person can take, but no, he was for real and just getting started. he tells me that its probably a computer virus and that i should be more careful when i surf the internet and its my responsiblity as a user to google stuff and fix these types of things myself, and this was probably not a warranty issue. he also disparaged my anti-virus (windows one care), saying that it was probably a virus and that i cant just download any old thing off the internet. stupid me, again. i was getting tired of this quick. so, i told him, regardless of what you think it is or what you think i should do, i am under warranty, and i would like for you to take a look at it and see if it is a warranty issue and if it is, please fix it for me. he backed down and said ok. geez, what a hassle. well, almost two weeks later, i went in to see if there had been any progress, and they were all done and waiting on me. they didnt think to call me when it was ready. ok, so whats the deal? well, they determined that the keyboard had gone out due to misuse, and that it was not under warranty, so they would not fix it for free, but they would sell me the keyboard for half price...30 dollars. i looked at the kid and asked what he meant by misuse, and if he really thought i misused my keyboard. what did he think i did, i asked, type with my fists? he would not even look at me. "uh, kevin said..." he trailed off, still looking at the ground. ok, i bought the keyboard for 30 dollars, and a book to teach myself how to install it, and never looked back. i guess i should think them for that. i am quite well versed in computers now thanks to their AWFUL, TERRIBLE service scaring me away from computer stores for good. i will never pay any one to work on my computer again because of them, and i will never step foot in this store, either location, and badmouth them every chance i get. to recap: they LIED to me to sell me a product, they would not honor their own warranty, and were EXTREMELY condescending. read more

My advice is DO NOT USE THESE GUYS. I've been there three times and called twice. The first time, they knowingly sold me a used mac power source and charged more than a new one from the Apple store. I brought it back after noticing that is was dirty when I opened it and had a several slices through the white coating on the cord. They then gave me another cord and it didn't work at all. Mixed experience, but more negative than positive in the end. I brought my computer in to replace the hard drive. They technically got the job done and at first I was really happy with it because they install a bunch programs on your computer in case you want them like Skype, iTunes, and Malwarebytes. The PARTICULAR guy who did my job was fantastic, his name was Chris. He explained all the programs and was very friendly. When I called back later after discovering a problem with the keyboard he was 100% accommodating and told me he could re-map some keys for me. The unfortunate part was when I had to deal with his coworkers the next day. I came in and the keys weren't quite re-mapped like I would have wanted, so I just wanted to make one small change. One of the guys there seemed to have absolutely zero knowledge about what key re-mapping even was, and basically had to admit that he had no idea what Chris did...he wouldn't ADMIT that he had no idea and just wasted my time with irrelevant jargon as if I wouldn't realize . Then the tall old bearded guy comes over and tells me that what I want actually CANNOT be done and I should just BUY a new keyboard from them. I knew it absolutely COULD be done so I tried to tell him, but he just kept arguing with me and then walked off to deal with another customer...so I left. I went home, found the program that Chris used, and fixed the problem myself in under a minute without ANY prior knowledge. Basically, these guys are idiots. CHRIS is great. read more

I work at a local non-profit and we had an old Macbook Pro donated to us that no longer worked (the donor just said "see if you can do anything with it"). So not expecting much, I took it into a couple of places to see how much it would cost to get it going again. Computer Zone was by far the cheapest. Made my account just to warn people. I work online so I need my laptop to work. It had started turning itself off for heating issues, and cleaning the dust out wasn't cutting it anymore, so I brought it in and told them specifically to do three things. First, I wanted the thermal paste on the CPU replaced so it wouldn't overheat any more. Second, I wanted them to add RAM since there it wasn't expanded yet. Third, I wanted them to fix the wire to one of the speakers, since it worked only intermittently. That was two months ago. They charged a lot but said they cleaned the entire case out since dust gets in places that compressed air can't reach, so I didn't mind it. Booted up, computer ran slower. It's been overheating worse than before, and the speaker now doesn't work at all. They gave some bullshit excuse about the wire going under one of the keys. Actually, despite all the bad reviews here, we had a very good experience last month. Brought in an HP laser printer that had been damaged in a move, and were told what part needed replacement after diagnosis. Standard procedure, part came in a week later, and we got the printer back the next day, no fuss, no bad surprises. Maybe they paid attention to the bad reviews and cleaned up their act. They seem fine now. The shop is no Apple store, but it was the least expensive repair in town, nearly $100 less than quoted by certified HP technicians in SJ. read more

Computer zone did in fact fix my PS3, which was suffering from the blinking red light of death. However it wound up totaling $260. About as much as going through Sony would have cost, however I chose computer zone because I figured a local store would have been faster, the whole process was about 2 months. Here are my grievances: -Took too long. -Just as pricey as Sony. -The video game I had in the system, of which I had made a note with one of the employes to make sure I would get back, was missing. The only explanation offered was that the disc was unsalvageable, which may be true, but the whole affair just seemed sketchy. -Lastly, my hard drive was formatted. Prior to paying for spare parts, and the actual operation, I was told the hard drive was intact, and that I would be contacted if formatting would occur. The owner of both locations, Kevin, who has a Russian accent, overcharged me, lied to me and tried to trick me. Here's how it went down. My laptop's screen stopped working, and he charged $200 just to assess it. I chose to buy a used replacement screen instead of new, and he charged me $490 for the used screen. When I came to pick it up, he pointed to my old screen and said: "They get like this when they're old" - which was confusing, since it looked fine but had fingerprints on it. Then he opened up my laptop to show me the used screen and it was covered with white damaged areas all over the surface! He was trying to tell me that my old screen was like that too. I had to point out that my screen only had fingerprints on it, and that this used screen would look awful during every dark scene of a movie. I rejected the used screen, told him to find a better one, then thought better of it and canceled the whole repair. It took me WEEKS and lots of phone calls to get my $490 back, and he deducted for the shipping of the used screen, so it was $470 instead. In March of 2014 I brought my macbook pro into Computer Zone and they diagnosed it with a dead logic board. The part needed was quoted as a new logic board @ over $400. I authorized the repair. It took them over three weeks to repair the problem. They had to be pressed to complete the repair, and had a "It gets done when it gets done," attitude with me whenever I inquired. When all was said and "done" I was charged over $700. Fast-forward to the present. Here we are a mere seven months later and the computer dies again. Not believing it couldn't possibly be the logic board again, I have the problem diagnosed by someone else. And wouldn't you know it: a DEAD LOGIC BOARD. After he had dissassembled the mac and had a look, the repair person asked me straight out if the logic board was refurbished. "Why?" I asked, to which he replied "Because it sure looks like a refurbished board, are you sure they sold you a new board?." I answered "That's what they told me." I then asked him if what caused the first failure could have caused the second. "No," said the repair person "The fans are clear, and functioning perfectly." Anger. Deep down anger. I have since moved out of state for grad school and the warranty is long-expired, but still--I would NEVER give these people my business EVER AGAIN. DONT GO HERE!!!!! I thought I would give them a try the place out when my xbox got the red ring of death. They charge $65 right off the bat to the first hour of service. I got a call three days after leaving it there to find out that the problem is that it is over heating and that I dont have the Microsoft warrenty anymore and that I would have to pay another $65 for them to open it up and see what they can do to fix it, and that doesnt include the price of parts if needed. I took my trusty 20-year old HP Laserjet Four Plus for repair. Since they charged $99 just to diagnose it, I asked if it would be worth fixing or I should just buy a new one. The advise I received was that that it was a good printer and it was probably worth fixing. Upon paying the $99 I was told they would have it ready typically in 48 hours. After calling them for a week, they finally told me that the problem was the fuser, which would cost $179. I did some research and found that you could get that part from Amazon for $50. Computer Zone would not get the part from anyone but their own sources, otherwise they would not guarantee the work ($179 sounds like a scam, but I have no way of telling because they would not disclose their sources). I also found that HP does not manufacture that part anymore. This was a clear sign that in the future it would be too expensive to service this printer. HP recommended that I buy something like the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401N to replace my old computer. It cost me $171. The new printer works much better (faster) that my old printer. Conclusion: 1) Computer Zone charges too much for just telling you what's the problem with your printer 2) They don't meet their time estimates for doing their work 3) They give you bad advise regarding your repair-vs-buy options. I ended up wasting $99 (the option would have been spending a total of $278 to fix a printer that was slow and expensive to maintain in the future) 4) They have bad customer relations policies. There are two kinds of businesses: those that will do a diagnostic for free and those that don't. Computer Zone, I am happy to say, is the former. Michael is great. My laptop wasn't charging and wouldn't turn on and I didn't know whether it was the power supply or the battery inside. Michael carefully explained to me what we needed to do and let me use his (working) power supply to recharge my laptop (the problem, it turned out, was my power supply). It took time to explain my problem, time to set the laptop up with the charger, and time to charge the laptop--all of which Michael graciously gave me, and without charging me.
