I reported severe damage caused by a Con Edison power line failure that occurred near my residence on July 20, 2025. According to my neighbors, the failure resulted in a power surge that entered my apartment, causing significant damage to several essential appliances and an expensive floor lamp. A Con Edison representative came to my apartment while I was in Florida. The surge caused the following damage: * My server/computer equipment * Washing machine * Stove (rendering me unable to cook meals) * Microwave * Several GFI outlets As a 64-year-old grandmother on Social Security Disability with custody of my 3-year-old granddaughter, this loss has placed me in an extremely difficult position. I am unable to afford to replace these appliances on my own. At the very least, I urgently need my stove replaced so I can prepare meals for my household. I requested that Con Edison send a representative (or claims adjuster) to evaluate the damage as soon as possible, and that my claim be reviewed for reimbursement or replacement of the affected appliances. I provided them with the requested photos of all affected appliances, estimates, and proof of payment for the appliance repair service call. Con Edison denied my claim. It is, of course, easy to deny responsibility by citing generalized service terms. However, my claim was not based on a mere inconvenience or routine outage. It was based on a documented service interruption that caused measurable and foreseeable losses, the details of which were provided with my original submission and were not addressed in their response. I contacted the New York State Public Service Commission for further evaluation and they, too, were useless! read more

ConEd charged us an exorbitant amount for June-July. Our bill went up nearly 40% compared to what it normally is during the summer and what it was the following 2 months. They offered no explanation as to how this could have happened. It seems like they have a way to fudge the numbers. Then in August there was some kind of mishap that led to my block and surrounding blocks to lose power for several days. They ignored the request for food reimbursement and only when I complained to the city, they sent a letter denying the claim, which they said was due to a storm. I contacted them to point out there was no storm and they told me whatever happened was out of their control so they aren't responsible. They are a monopoly and they are gouging customers with no repercussions. If you can avoid doing business with them, count your blessings. read more

ConEdison has probably one of the worst customer service. Not that they were intentionally rude, but that they could get away with not offering certain services because they just can. I rescheduled with them THREE times to uninstall a gas meter, but they never showed up. I'm not even sure if they even provide this service at this point. When you do need to call them, make sure to always question everything they do 'confirm' or 'say they'll do.' Talk to them and question them as if they are a child, because these poor customer service reps don't even know what they're doing. ConEd changed my account number on Oct 2023. I sent a payment with my TD bank account and ConEd claimed they never received it. Was told to get proof that TD Bank submitted the payment. Submitted 2 sets of proof (both letters from TD showing the trace number, confirmation number, and remit date) on 11/17/23 to their payment correction department. No one bothered to reply or make the corrections. So I called them on 12/5/23 and now they asked me to send my bank statement as additional proof. So I sent it in but they said my personal bank statement only shows I submitted the payment to ConEd but it does not show ConEd deducted the payment from me. I am back at square 1 and ConEd rep Lauren was very unprofessional and started sighing over the phone as if I am wasting her time. I asked her why she is sighing at me, I am the one who lost money. Hi. I've been a Con Ed customer at my current Brooklyn address for over 20 years. Recently, I started noticing that my electric consumption bill is fluctuating by as much as 15-20% from week to week, even when there is no one in the apartment and all appliances except the fridge are turned off or unplugged (for several weeks, for example vacation). I tried to get through to customer service today to start analyzing what is going on. I waited on hold for 40 min to speak to someone, then when a rep finally got on the line, it was impossible to hear them and the call was broken up. The rep then said they would call me right back, which they did not. So, not I have to start all over with a call to customer support. It takes almost an hour on hold just to speak to someone and then when they get on the phone, you can't hear them (I heard the hold music perfectly for 45 minutes though, before that). And no one calls the customer back. It's ridiculous. They don't solve any problems or address any issues and you can't even get their phone system to work well enough to speak to a rep. read more

I have just recently confirmed that I had been paying my neighbors bills for the last two years I lived in my current apt. The bills were coming in well over $200. I live alone and shut off all fuses when not home. After repeated calls to coned they continuously tried to convince me it was the warmer months and I was just using more electricity. FINALLY after months of this I got an appointment for someone to check out my fuse box. Sure enough they had the boxes confused. Since that day (September) I have not heard a word from conedison. I filed 5 "Emergency Service" requests last weekend and no one ever showed up. I lost power. My basement was flooded 3 times over the weekend as a result of their incomplete and poorly executed repair work. No one from customer service has contacted me to explain, apologize or make amends. Con Ed endangered my neighbors, everyone who passed in front of my property from April until December (which is how long they took to replace a simple 220V line), and have created extensive damage to my property and sidewalk. MOVING / FINAL BILL If you move, go online to the ConEd site, and accidentally do not add your apartment number, you will NOT receive your final bill. Then, you will receive a bill from a debt collector (which can hurt your credit). Then, you will call ConEd and wait 45+ minutes before you can even speak to a representative, who then explains this ridiculousness. I moved, went onto the ConEd site to close my account. Apparently, I didn't add the apartment number...even though they had sent my bill to the same address for 5 years, they went by the 'close account' address. I was getting my mail forwarded, so assumed my final bill would be forwarded (as every other one was). Because of this system, I now have to deal with a debt collector for the first time in my life. I wonder how much money ConEd makes selling NYC final bills to these types of bill to debt collectors - it's definitely unethical, probably even a money making scam. read more

CONED is the biggest scam I have ever seen. Because of Covid 19 they have been charging me for the apartment I haven't even been at and have had zero electricity or gas usage in, 2019 rates for those months because they "weren't doing in person readings." They told us "but don't worry, if you send a real reading of your meter then we will retroactively update you account and credit you back". Long story short, I had my Superr take a picture, I sent to them back in July and after months of HOUNDING them to credit me back since March 2020 they came back with a $40 credit. I HAVE PAID OVER $350 DOLLARS. Due to covid 19 we are sick, unemployed, low on money, and this is how coned treats us. It's repulsive. This company has made life extremely difficult for me and my roommates moving into our first apartment straight out of college. When I called to set up and account I was first asked to fax my info over, then to email, then they told me giving my social over the phone would work. So me thinking it would be the easiest, fastest and most painless, that is what I did. That interaction quickly left my mind when I was bombarded with life, as one gets. 4 Months had passed. We hadn't revived a letter, a phone call, a bill, nothing. I thought well this must mean our management company is paying it. I hear that some landlords do that. Come September, we receive a final shut off notice in the mail if we did not pay 1,140 dollars right away. We panicked and put the money in thinking it was the collective bills that they were not sending us. Turns out it wasn't that it was a deposit, and when I called to figure out why we were getting charged so much money, and if we could get our deposit back, I got 3 different stories from 3 different people. The first person explained it all to me, explained that we would be getting the deposit credited to our account and then getting the rest back in a check in the mail. We would start at zero, and we would change the account name over to my roommate. We were satisfied. Days pass. No word, no call, no check. Understandable it's a couple of days. I understand checks take time. My roommate logs into the new account to find the balance is now 600 some dollars. We are, for lack of better words flabbergasted at how our electric bill can be this high. So I call again. I am on hold for over 30 minutes. When Mrs. Brennan picks up the phone I start asking questions. I get so many mixed answers my head starts to spin and I can only deduce this to be the company trying to scam us. My favorite quote of hers, "How do you know how much people normally pay in the winter months? You say you moved in in May." Then she went on to try and give me percentages and try to explain supply and demand to me. It was laughable. Completely ridiculous and laughable. I was infuriated by this. Our December bill was nowhere close to this. Then when I asked to speak to a supervisor, there were none in the office, and she had to send many messages to try and get someone. When I handed the phone to my roommate to figure out her new account she spoke to her way differently than she did with me not knowing she had been on speaker and dealing with both of us at the same time. I realize I am more assertive and aggressive, but she spoke to my more polite roommate like a child. And had her make a new account which she had already done with the other employee. We stopped speaking with Mrs. Brennan and nothing was resolved. I asked to speak to a supervisor again and was told that they would tell me the same thing. I wanted to speak with one anyway and I made that clear to her. She said someone would give me a call in 2 to 3 hours. Finally, we spoke to a supervisor that did help us out for the most part. The issue is still not resolved, and they don't read their meters. Asked them about that too and got many many mixed answers on meter readings. I haven't seen anyone come out to read the meter in forever. I would know because I am the one that would let him in the one time one came. Also the wire outside our apartment is wrapped around a tree. That was ignored by them on the phone. Overall, conedison was trying to swindle money from a group of young starving artists trying to survive in the city and make ends meet. In the most eloquent way, FUCK YOU CON ED. When it comes to poor customer service, they're up there with Time Warner. We scheduled a service with them due to incorrect meters; they sent a guy 3 days before and he turned off the power; to the wrong floor. DIdn't even say that he came to turn off the power; simply said you won't have power, call Con Ed, and walked away. Didn't have the chance to tell them that they cut off the wrong floor. The other floor had an 86 year old woman who relied on the power for medical devices and AC to keep cool. We waited 5 hours and countless calls before they sent someone to turn the power back on. read more

Spoke to many different representatives and Supervisors and not ONE person knew what the hell they were doing. Public Service Commission agreed with my opinion. But they were a waste of my time. Two flipping years later, I'm now told I only overpaid $134.00 on my shared meter, YET, I have statements 3 inches thick that have numerous credits AND a printout I recently received by my request of my credits and charges which shows they owe me $247.00, BUT a recent statement now shows I have a balance of $1,344.00, and that I'm disputing the amount of $2,500.00. What the hell? Where are these numbers coming from??? I'm disputing $2500,00? I OWE THEM $1,344.55? THEY CAN SHUT MY ELECTRIC OFF BECAUSE THEY WON'T GET A DIME OF THAT FROM ME!!! They are INCOMPETENT, LYING THIEVES!!! I never would have went through this for $134.00, NEVER !!!! I have statements from them showing I have a credit of $1,988.00, and now I owe them $1,344.00 and disputing $2,500.00? They are out of their minds. Pretty bad customer service. Which, yes, they can get away with since they are a monopoly (at least on the customer service / delivery side). I moved to a Brooklyn apartment and wanted (silly me!) to have the electricity turned on the same day. So I called Con Ed and asked them to turn it on on the 15th. "OK," they said, "The guy will be there sometime between 8 AM and 4 PM." But that's the day I'm moving in, so I probably won't be there that early, can we arrange a timeframe that's maybe not starting at 8 AM? no, of course not, that would be convenient. "They will call you when they're there," the guy on the phone said. Can they maybe call *before* they get there so at least I have some warning? Don't be silly, that would make sense from a customer service point of view. (and yes, I did actually ask both of those questions, and he said no for both) Of course, they showed up at 9 AM and I wasn't there. I had to reschedule for the next day, and the next day (when I was hoping to get it over with as soon as possible, and move on to doing other move-related things) the guy showed up right around 3 PM. And all he needed to do was remove a piece of plastic from the meter, which was outside, so really, what did they need me there for?
