The staff is always friendly and efficient. The business looks clean from the display cases to the well stocked shelves. Not a fancy place but welcoming. There's an area with tables and chairs for customers who want to eat-in.

Well, it's what they use at Katz's in NYC. Except at Katz's they apparently boil the pastrami before serving it so it totally falls apart. That's what I learned from the passionate fellow behind the counter today. Well, that, and they had no pastrami prepared for sandwiches. Well, I'll just have to come back. For years I've been told of the legend of this place. The place where Old World Provisions meats are sliced and served on bread for a pittance. A manufacturing facility where there is a small retail operation that's open to the public. Helmbold Fritz is like a beacon on a hill. Well, it's on a hill at least. It's a bit tucked away in the warehouse district around the corner from the Franklin Ballroom. And when you pull into the driveway, you have to go around back to get to the front door. It's almost as if they don't want you there. But they totally want you there. Kinda. When I called to ask if they were open for lunch, the response was, "Lunch? We open at 11." I'm unclear if the wooden picnic table around the back of the deli was actually meant for visitors of if its for employees, but we decided to stick around and eat there instead of having a car picnic. It was a glorious day. Part of me is a bit worried about coming back here for pastrami. Because if it's half as good as I suspect it will be, it might be hard to keep me away. That fifth star is being reserved until I try their signature products. But I promise to report back.

My wife and I willingly travel 30+ minutes to pick this pizza up, passing every Paesan's and I Love NY Pizza on the way without thinking twice. The wings are pretty good too. Not that greasy, but not great either. Route Four would be ranked #5 for me in Binghamton, but #1 here. It's a little piece of home (and quality pizza) that is hard to find.

I took a seat and watched a stream of customers come in to pick up takeout orders. Each of the customers also had to wait for their order. After about 10 minutes two pizzas were brought out to me and an apology was offered due to the wait. Sitting around a roaring outdoor firepit, I now found out that one pizza was topped with pepperoni and the other with crumbled sausage. I tried one of each. The crusts are of the thin type, but not super thin. The dough was of average flavor, bits of char on the edge, and golden brown on the bottom. There was plenty of pepperoni on the one, and not quite as much sausage on the other. The sausage was not anything special by my taste. I did not notice any fennel flavor. Overall, the pizza was satisfactory and satisfying, nothing outstanding.

But it's the quality assurance of this place.... half the time you order on a Saturday and their system accepts the order, the DoorDash driver comes by and "whoops!" they're closed. Then you ask when they open and they'll say 10am... and someone says "we had a family emergency"... and while I get that, how about you turn off the ordering system to accept the orders so I'm not out the money and the driver doesn't waste time driving to pick up the food? Then sometimes you'll get a great saucy pizza (which I love).... but other times, someone just decides to be lazy and take a pizza they've had sitting around under the counter for slices and just use that. So you paid $15+ for a pizza to be cooked fresh and you get a pizza that's dry and tastes like someone reheated the whole pizza. That was the last straw for me because they do it so many times... both of those things. Great pizza sauce, great pizza, but OMG, I can tell why I never see anyone inside your pizza place whenever I go... And they haven't changed... they used to sometimes just burn the crap out of the pizza too... you'd get a pizza that crumbles in your hand under it, or sometimes you'll get a crust with a huge bubble in the middle because they just didn't care. And that's why I stopped ordering from them... just laziness and no one is really around to make sure they don't do these things...... shame, really.

Out of the three items, the best part of the meal was - the diet Coke. (If you've tried getting Cocla Cola products from Albany restaurants and are a Coke fan, you understand this.) The pizza was pleasant, but decidedly average. The crust was not crisp, though reheating should help with that, which I shall find out with the leftovers. There was more crust than I normally like relative to the cheese, but it wasn't overly unbalanced. It was just a little too much on the crust side. The wedge, in conrast, had so much sauce I could not taste the chciken at all, and had trouble even finding the chicken on the sandwich. When I did, the chicken had minimal flavor. a good chicken parmiagiana should actually let you taste chicken with crisp breading, not soggy breding hidden in enough sauce to cause digestive distress. And yes, I did expereince digestive distress. I might buy their pizza again, but Albany's a decent size city, and there's lots of competition. But I won't be trying the wedge for quite a whle.

It was a bit light on ricotta compared to other calzones but there was no lack of cheese overall. It was more of a folded over white pizza than a calzone. That is, I expected it to be a puffy pocket but it was a flat semi circle with big slits on top. Not bad. Maybe I'd be in the mood for that style of calzone again in the future. I'd skip the buffalo chicken wrap next time. It was relatively dry, not spicy, and not as substantial as I was expecting. Beyond that, it had a grill flavor to it that was a bit out of place and interfered with the expected flavor. They seemed to put it on the grill to seal it closed in the middle but they keep the ends open so you have to hold the end closed while eating it to prevent bits from falling out. It was more of a somewhat buffalo flavored chicken roll-up than a buffalo chicken wrap. Surprisingly good fries. Also, great peanut butter pie. Note that the pepperoni is beef. It is very appreciated that it is clearly marked as beef so people can decide if that's a thing they want more or less than traditional pepperoni. Far too few other places think it's important to note this!
