I love this place. Like many, I have been coming here for years. Newer location is easy and tons of parking. I've always felt comfortable even when I think its a lame question.. the owner has always been super cool. The place is huge, clean and a great vibe. Love this place good to find a store where the owner is all about what's going to work for your aquarium and not just trying to sell you a bunch of unnecessary things. I've been in the store three times and each time I came into the store looking to purchase certain things for my aquarium and the only look me in the face and said you don't need that and then gave me the correct information we're on what I needed if it was anything at all. I just discovered this place recently and I'm so happy I did. the owner is so nice and knowledgeable. The store is mostly self service so you get to net and pick your fish. its great that you are able to make sure you get the exact fish that you want if you are after something specific or certain markings. the store is a little hidden and hard to see the first time but I feel like it is a hidden treasure. I would highly recommend stopping by here the next time you need something for your aquarium. read more

They have a large selection of freshwater fish, and a great selection for goldfish. I've stopped by to get a Ranchu goldfish this afternoon, and the price is very reasonable ($12 for a Ranchu or other fancy goldfish). They also have lots of fish food and aquatic plants choices. I love going to Concord Aquarium. Steve, the owner, is great and I prefer to support a small local fish store rather than a big box pet store. Concord Aquarium's fish are always in much better shape than Petsmart or Petco too. I've been going to Concord Aquarium for many years, even before they moved to the current location, and Steve has always been helpful. When there's somethin' strange in your aquarium who you gonna call? Concord Aquarium!!! When I bought my new house it came with a big koi pond and 26 koi fish that had been neglected for over 6 months. When we finally got the pumps going the pond water turned muddy with algae. In desperation we went and visited the Concord Aquarium. The owner Steve and his daughter Lisa were super helpful. They walked us through the basics, explained the complexities of algae, winter fish feedings, and general koi pond care. Steve is my new Koi doctor! I highly recommend this place. They also have a varied selection of Koi food. read more

This store has a large variety of freshwater fish. You can find many varieties of fish and even very large angel fish as well. The fish look very healthy and well cared for. This is a much better place to get fish. I once got some fish from PetSmart and they were very sick and infected my entire tank with a fish disease called ich. It nearly killed all of my fish including my pleco. Pleco are very hardy fish and it takes a lot to kill one. However, I was able to treat them and they survived. Don't trust PetSmart. PetSmart sells diseased and sick fish. Buy fish from a locally owned aquarium store where the people really take good care of their fish. read more

I've been to many stores across Bay Area and this store is amongst the best, this and Vallejo aquarium. This aquarium has big, healthy fish that are very well priced, some fish are cheaper than most chain stores, the staff acknowledges you, and is very kind, Steve loves to start conversations at the register, and this store even lets you catch your own fish! Just got back and I think we have found our new fish store. The owner helped us and talked to my wife and me about our tank and fish. He was very knowledgeable and made complete sense. Even though we live in Rohnert Park we are now loyal customers. His prices were lower than stores here and most of the fish are 2 for the price of 1 !!!!. What a great store and owner. Do yourself a favor and even though you might have to drive an hour, do yourself a favor and go to the store to get your supplies. Much better quality and better selection. I'm very disappointed with STEVE My husband and I have been very very loyal to this store for a year now, we have purchased many many fish and supplies from Steve and really liked him at first... we had a crash in our saltwater tank and everything died BUT 1 fish that we had JUST purchased from him 3 days before, we called and asked if he could hold the fish so we could fix the tank and keep our last fish alive... he said he didn't have the room (for a 3in peaceful fish) later that day we went by the store and found that the saltwater section was almost EMPTY!! we would have given him money to save our fish and he REFUSED to help us... to me that is HORRIBLE customer service, especially to customers that have been loyal and have spent A LOT of money in the store... My husband and I will NOT be coming back! we will spend our money elsewhere! read more

Always buy fish from a store where a) the staff seems knowledgeable and likes to answer questions, and b) there isn't going to be a different person working there the next time you go back. (I.E. Never buy from petsmart unless you are feeding them to your cat). Live fish stores are becoming more and more rare these days, and ones run by the same trustworthy people for 10+ years are a diamond in the rough. When I first moved back to the bay area from college, I got a job here because I liked the girl behind the counter - but I got to know the owner, Steve, pretty well - he's a stand up guy that is really concerned about the fish and his customers. He's a real wealth of knowledge if you want to learn something about keeping freshwater fish, and this fact alone will make your fish-tanking experience SO MUCH MORE enjoyable! On a weird side note: the girl that works there is a pretty talented young photographer (she even got a fancy degree in photography!), and she sells prints at the counter. Steve and his team are some of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to your Saltwater or Freshwater needs. There are so few of these great "Mom and Pop" shops left. I have purchased all of my fish from his store and all are very healthy and happy in their new homes... Maybe I have to many tanks but that's what this hobby does to you! If you ever do have problems with your fish (DON'T FLUSH THEM) They rescued my entire tank of African Ciclids and brought them back from near death. It happens from time to time and I am glad they were there! Don't spend your money at PetSmart or PetCo for your aquarium needs... Support your local independents! read more

Love this place. This is the best fish store in the area. When you walk in the staff greets you and ask if you want any help (unlike the other fish store in the area). They are very knowledgeable and friendly and a ton of the fish are buy one get one free. First time going to this store. I needed to buy some snails. I had been buying them at Petco but they seemed to die within a couple of weeks, so I decided to try a "real" aquarium store. I bought 3 snails - but when I got home I discovered 2 of the 3 were dead. Thanks for not taking the time to see if what you were plucking out of the tank were dead or alive. I'm not taking them back because it will cost me more in gas than it is worth. In the future I will be going back to Petco instead of this store. I was not impressed by this aquarium store or the individuals working there - I won't make the mistake of going back there again. read more

Am in the process of revitalizing a tank and found some great additions, in particular, Reticulated Loaches that I'd not seen before. Added a couple and went back for more--they are incredibly fun to watch. They've quite a selection of cichlids, too, and will be setting up another tank for them soon. read more

We visited twice, to purchase 4 fish for a recently purchased aquarium for my son. The owner was courteous and answered my son's questions. Good selection and a nice shop, overall. However, one fish out of three died within a couple of days, no obvious reason. We visited about a month later, and bought 5 more fish. The fish in the tank contracted ick about three weeks later, and despite treatment, we are down to 2 out of 10 total fish purchased. We're new at this, so perhaps the tank is somehow not right, but I checked the water chemistry, and there was no obvious problems with the water. Maybe our experience was unusual. I hope so. Losing so many from two separate trips seems like a lot. read more

I consider this the best aquarium shop in this part of the East Bay. The new location is a huge improvement as well, so much more open, more space, not in total darkness like the last. I go here very regularly and enjoy it. They have almost anything you need for freshwater in terms of equipment. They don't have a ton of tanks but that's fine, I likely would just go to Petco or Petsmart for any standard size tank anyway. They do carry some cool tanks you wouldn't always see at other aquarium shops though. They are well stocked in every other need I have and I can count on them having anything within reason, in stock. Livestock is pretty extensive, considering it's not a gigantic store. I do wish they carried a bit more rare/odd stuff. That's one thing I enjoy about a local fish store, you get to experience more than what Petsmart has to offer. Not so much here but it doesn't bug me either. Certain shrimp and fish are a bit pricey here, even if not really rare in the hobby. Some are rare in this area and I have paid way too much for skipping a trip to another store much further away. Overall I see this shop just getting better and better. I am a frequent and happy customer. read more

The gentleman that owns this store saved my large goldfish's life. Had I know then what I now know because of him, several other goldfish would have been saved as well. He and is daughter are caring, friendly people. The store is clean and the fish there well cared for. I couldn't be happier with my experience. Went in to buy a salt water anemone and we explain our clown fish and it size he wouldn't even allow us to buy the Anemone because the flow would kill it do to its size and we would waist our money! So we have traveled absolutely everywhere in Contra Costa County looking for the best shop for fish supplies/fish and we've had the best luck here at Concord Aquarium. The staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I've easily had the most luck keeping the fish I purchased there alive, also. You can't beat a helpful staff and healthy fish! Also, I popped in to get some more shrimp yesterday and they are moving to a new location effective September 1st ! I am personally very excited about the move, as their location was the only thing I didn't like about the place! read more

Absolutely the best aquarium store in the Bay Area! The owner is very knowledgeable and extremely nice. Him and his wife are the only 2 workers there and some days it's just him so be patient. His fish are high quality fish and he will answer any question you have. We tried the aquarium store near Target in Pleasant Hill and the staff there were very rude and if you're not buying saltwater fish then they definitely don't acknowledge you so expect to wait. There's a reason why the reviews are so high for this location and for so long because he really makes you want to come back and expand your tanks. read more

I've really want to like this place. Its local, it's cute, it's clean, it's privately owned, the prices are reasonable, buuut... there are a few issues. I'll start off with my biggest issue, the health of the fish. Over the course of the past few months, I have bought around nine fish from this shope. All of which passed away from an issue that they brought from this owner's tanks, to mine. Another problem is that I'm sure the owner would beg to differ that there are any issues with his fish. He is a complete snob. He actually believes that he is better than everyone else in the hobby. Even suggests that the water from his tanks be directly added to my aquarium because the thinks that the other stores have bad quality water and fish. Well, the fish that I've bought from Petco & Petsmart have lived in my tank for over two years now. His fish have all died in less than a week. The first time I noticed one developed pop-eye, which thankfully none of the others got since I actually medicated my water after that. The owner claims that such medications are bad for aquatic life because hes an expert. I believe that he may know a lot, but not everything. These aquariums are just like yours at home with normal filters and such. The owners ego is also the reason behind the extremely limited variety of aquarium products. He only supplies what he believes is best, regardless of what the customer wants. I do not know whether I have just had bad luck, or if it was just a bad fish supply, but I do know this, I am far more comfortable with the quality of fish in corporate stores, and I really hate that because im not a fan of supporting too big to fail businesses. I won't rate below three stars, in hopes of the improvement of this store. The fish varieties are many, and I want to see improvements so I can start coming here instead.
