I walked in one day out of curiosity and I left the store feeling dismissed and to a very large degree unwelcome. As I walked around I noticed a shade that I wanted to purchase and the older lady in the store was rude and very dismissive letting me know that I should bring the lamp in for a good fit (she may have been the owner). While I wouldn't mind doing that whatsoever, the attitude behind her message was less than stellar, like she couldn't be bothered with my meager lampshade business. She did offer some advice on fit, but that did not compensate for her terrible attitude toward me especially after she told me the lampshade was over $200 dollars, using a condescending voice as if I couldn't afford it. Almost all of the lamps in my house are vintage or antique, and I've brought several of them to Concord Lamp & Shade for repairs and rewiring. They do good work at this nice little shop in downtown Concord, and because they're one of the few places around that specialize in what they do, it's popular. I'd say the main drawback is the parking, which can be tricky as it's right in Concord Center. Sometimes you have to circle the block a few times for a spot, and when you're carrying a floor lamp or a bulky box, the closer the better, so parking far away isn't ideal. Also, the shop is tiny, and hard to move around in, so I prefer to go right when they open at 10am to avoid crowds. They don't provide written estimates or quotes, they just verbally give you a number, which I don't like, especially when I had to send an estimate to an Etsy seller for reimbursement for repairs on a lamp that broke during shipping. I had to wait until after I had paid to send the receipt, which wasn't great. I will say that their estimates are typically in the range they initially provide, with the exception of one repair that ended up costing more than expected. read more

I can concur the woman (owner?) couldn't have been less helpful. She was actually shockingly dismissive as well as rude to the her other employees as well as to me. I begrudgingly bought a shade and took my 2nd lamp elsewhere, only to realize their prices were 60% higher than the other specialty lampshade store I went to. When the shade looked horrible on the lamp when I got it home, I went back to return it the next day... the next employee points to a tiny sign that says store refunds only... in a world of efficient e-commerce - you'd think a store would try harder to be accommodating, or at least nice. read more

Take Heed - DO NOT have your repairs done here especially antiques! I dropped off 3 antique heirloom lamps (2 table, 1 floor) for a simple cord re-wiring. They took it upon themselves to also change the sockets (which I did NOT request) without even discussing with me. Two of my lamps are now permanently damaged. On one lamp they cut down the 2 candlesticks where the bulbs go, damaging the integrity of the antique! The floor lamp had numerous issues: glass lampshade wouldn't even fit as new socket was much wider and it was installed crooked, switch could hardly be turned, expensive LED 3-way bulb that I purchased there didn't work properly and there was a big scratch on the brass neck of the lamp! Complete shoddy workmanship. I had to return to the store 3 times to get some sort of resolution and they had to re-install the original old socket. Thankfully it hadn't been thrown out! Beware also they do not give itemized receipts so you don't know what "parts" you're paying for. Owner refunded for the floor lamp but sadly my 2 antique heirlooms have irrepairable damage. read more

I live locally in town and try to support local businesses. I have shopped at the Concord lamp store occasionally over the years - shopping for lamps and/or shades is not something most people do very often. I have never felt very welcome at the shop in the past, but today I actually felt like I was a MAJOR imposition. Like other posts below, I was not aware I needed an appointment I rang the bell and the gentleman who answered asked if I had an appointment. I told him I did not have an appointment and after a very awkward moment he let me in, but gruffly told me I may have to leave if an appointment arrived. Now I'm really feeling welcome in the shop. The women who is usually at the shop came over and asked what I needed. I was trying to explain the size shade I needed and she basically told me they don't do returns and I may want to come back. I should have taken her advice and headed to Home Goods, but I really needed the shade. Needless to say, I was in and out within 5 minutes and no "appointment" arrived while I was there. I can totally appreciate and respect Covid rules, but that does not excuse rude or dismissive treatment of customers. There is a nice way to communicate your policies during these unusual times while treating your customers like you appreciate their business. Their poor customer service is only magnified by Covid. I will never shop here again and I will tell my local friends to do the same. read more

Went in to find a simple shade and the first thing that happened was that the owner? Salesperson? kind of yelled at us for not knowing the size of the shade in anything other than inches. Huh? She then motioned toward some shades we could look at. Half were blocked by lamps they were fixing. The prices were crazy high. I brought a treasured family heirloom lamp to Concord Lamp and Shade to see if it would be possible to bring it to life again. It needed rewiring, the base had deteriorated and the shade was long gone. In a nutshell, I am absolutely delighted with my new old lamp! I think this is a great shop. They have fixed two antique lamps for me and did a beautiful job on both. I have bought lampshades as well - they do need to see the lamp to fit the shade properly, so I had to make a second trip for one of the shades. The staff is friendly and has helped me lots of times with lighting issues, including rewiring antique lamps. When I wanted advice about a shade for an old bronze lamp, the person helping me suggested a shade with a gold inner lining, which I would never have thought of, but which is just perfect with the lamp. I expected a shade that would just filter light from the bulb, but the shiny gold lining reflects light downward as well. Really a nice effect. I enjoy also just wandering around the store looking at lamps, as several other people are often doing as well. Maybe the staff tries not to bother people who are just looking? I've purchased from this local shop several times over the years, as it can be tricky finding lampshades for antique lamps and this store has a decent selection of simple ones. I knew from previous trips here that the sales staff left something to be desired, and this last time was no exception. Even though the shop was completely empty, I came in knowing what I was looking for, and my entire purchase took all of ten minutes, I was treated as if I was a mere annoyance. The saleswoman (Owner? Manager? God, I hope not) never left her highhorse located behind the counter, and simply pointed where I can look. I'm in sales, and the idea of not actually helping a customer in a more hands-on way is unbelievable to me. It really feels like she thinks her job is to quietly judge customers and not, say, sell them lamps. Also, no shop that specializes in Red Sox and Patriots lamps should judge ANYONE. read more

I recently bought a house in the area and was so happy to find this place. I brought one of a pair of lamps in for shade fitting. The woman I worked with had a great deal of expertise and was extremely helpful. She was patient and made excellent (and knowledgeable) suggestions. She allowed me to put my lamp on the counter and try on multiple shades. Once we found the perfect fit, she matched it with the correct harp. She really has a great eye and I can't recommend this shop enough if you care about your lighting fixtures. I can understand other customers' frustration at having to wait, but I think one must adjust their expectations when entering a shop with no more than two employees staffed at a time, and more importantly, a shop that is in the business of something as hands-on, involved, and subjective as lamps and lampshades. If the customer ahead of you is taking a bit longer, just be patient. People go here for a personalized experience where input is valued. If you're not looking for that, shop online. read more

I had an issue with a custom lamp shade, and they took care of it without the slightest hesitation (and also explained to me why it happened). When I came to drop off my shade for the second time, they remembered me from the previous visit a month back--I didn't have to introduce myself--and they made small talk with my kids about things they discussed the last time we were there. I had a unique lamp, and knew what I wanted....the "expert" manager/owner made alternative recommendations which, after MONTHS for delivery (and no phone updates as to why) looked absolutely ridiculous. Completely lacking in proportion--anyone with eyes could look at it and know it was all wrong. She should have been to embarrassed to show it to me with out correcting it or offering a solution--but there was no ownership of the outcome. Instead it was more of the dismissive attitude and "this is what you ordered" which I actually have a question about. My memory was that I had asked for a different size, but of course she never gave me a written order with a description of what the would do.....get EVERYTHING in writing, and don't use their design suggestions--your own gut will be better. Now I have to re-do the lamp all over again and use the lampshade on a different lamp entirely. read more

I am very sorry to write this review because between 1990 and 2000 I had many vintage lamps repaired by Concord Lamp and Shade and bought shades there as well. Their work was well done and I was willing to pay their prices for good service. I recently called ahead to ask if they had shades in the size I need to replace and they suggested I bring the lamp. I did bring the lamp, which is quite large. But the saleswoman on duty that day almost completely ignored me and proceeded to help the customers who were already in the store and the customer who came in after me, despite being told that by that customer that I was next, giving me the same feeling as the posters below - that the importance of doing business with me had been dismissed at a glance, with no eye contact at all. I did wait patiently for between 10 and 15 minutes. I'm a very loyal customer of small businesses that do well by me but I'm not going to put up with that type of treatment. If you live locally and have plenty of time to cool your heels in the shop, go. If this store is out of your way, or you value your time, there are other places to shop. read more

I had been dawdling literally for years over getting two family lamps rewired and their shades replaced. I finally stirred myself to get it done before Christmas because they were becoming unsafe. I chose Concord Lamp and Shade although it was a bit of a drive because I found the website informative and attractive. Two minutes after walking in the door I knew I had chosen the right place. I really clicked with the proprietor, Ann Eckert, whom I found to be wry, efficient and very helpful. I have no background in decorating or lighting, but Ann encouraged me and together we made the project I had been dreading into something fun. A week later I had the two rewired lamps at home with new shades, and both my wife and (grown) children love them. I am almost sorry that I don't have any more lamps that need to be refurbished, but will happily send friends and neighbors to the store. read more

Disappointed from moment one. I needed to approach the owner as she chose not to acknowledge my entrance. I asked about a few lamps and shades as she stared with flat affect. I smiled and attempted to engage her, but she acted like I bothered her with such a paltry purchase. I left empty handed and annoyed by her lack of customer service. Apparently, they do not recover but agreed to order a new shade for me Months later, July? i called to fInd out what happened and to cancel the order since I had heard nothing. the woman responded, oh don't do that, they made a mistake and are now working in your order so i waited. why did you not call me to let me know there was a delay? Finally, I received a message that the shade was in, ready to be picked up. no mention made of the need to make an appointment. I drove to Concord to pickup the shade. The store was locked with a sign on the door that one needed an appointment. I wondered why I had not been informed of this. i rang the bell. the woman came to the door, said she was busy with a customer and would come back when she was finished. she did not ask my name or business. I have given the Concord Lamp and Shade quite a bit of business in the past and put up with the owner's brusque manner because I knew they provided a good product and good repair service. Today put me over the edge........I went in to purchase some lampshades and the person waiting on me (owner) was rude beyond belief and borderline antagonistic. It is so hard to find beautiful lamp shades and Concord Lamp and Shade has them, but to put up with rude sales people , orders that don't get filled and sales people who don't call back is really bad busness. Concord is a small town and word spreads. I heard bad comments, but wanted to support a small business. What a mistake! I was being waited on and another customer came into the store and the sales person started helping him. I waited 15 mins put the shade I wanted to buy back on the shelve and left. I've had many lamps repaired and rewired at this shop. The service is very friendly, the repairs take about a week and the prices are very fair. Several of my lamps were quite old and were in terrible shape. They did an excellent job repairing the wiring and fixing other issues that were found. I recently purchased a large pottery lamp without a shade and thought to go to Concord Lamp and Shade because I heard the store advertised on NPR. My experience could not have been better. Denise was extremely helpful, showing me various style, color and size options until I found just the right one. She also helped me to select a new harp and bulb which suited the lamp perfectly. After getting a bit of an education on harps, bulbs and shades (who knew?), I looked around at home and realized I should change a few shades on other lamps as well. I went back to the store and worked with Ann to select those. When I wished one style came in a different color, she offered to special order it for me. The prices are not cheap but I found them reasonable given the quality, selection and service. Honestly, I can't believe how much better (and brighter) everything looks with the right shades and harps! They also gave me a nifty info card on figuring out maximum bulb wattage. I am puzzled to see some negative reviews on this shop because I spent quite a bit of time here making selections and saw several customers purchasing lovely pieces and receiving first rate service. Many of the lamps are made in-house, for example from stunning Nicaraguan pottery, and shades bearing regional nautical maps are a unique specialty. I love the selection of Currey & Company lamps at Concord Lamp & Shade. This is by far my favorite lighting manufacturer, and they always seem to stock so many options. They also carry so many other brands, offer a variety of lamp types, and have every type and size of lampshade you could possibly need. They also custom make lamps - I had a wine bottle from Italy turned into a lamp! It's now sitting in my home, and has a great backstory that I share with friends and family. I absolutely love it. One service that I haven't taken advantage of is the lamp repair. I see folks coming in with all sorts of antique or specialty lamps that need repair. It's nice to know this type of service exists if I ever do need it. read more
