    Stew of the Seven Seas
    Joshua W.

This place was probably the best meal of our trip to San Juan (so far). We blundered into it looking for a quiet place after a long day hiking in the sun. They've got a nice upstairs area with that party vibe, if you're looking for that, but downstairs is nice, intimate, and quiet. First off, our waitress, Laura, was just awesome. She offered to take pics of us. She gave us suggestions, explained what sauces were, and was generally helpful, while never being overbearing or annoying. Laura was really great. But, the food! OH MY YUMS. We started with a sea scallops appetizer, which has a fantastic garlic sauce. The garlic variety they used was sharp and flavourful, none of that mild "hint of garlic" junk. It hit you on the face and left you wanting more. The scallops themselves were firm, delicious. I went with the seven seas stew. It vaguely reminded me of a mild gumbo, flavour-wise, but not spicy. This worked. It's full of mussels, shrimp, calamari, and a lobster tail, as well as fish. It's also served with rice, which will sop up the soup later. So... you know how relationships develop these little "funny" inside joke bits? Whenever my fiancée asks me how something is, if it's delicious, I pull this horrible face and tell her, "this is terrible, you don't want to even try it. I'll suffer it and eat it all." Uh. Laura saw this and rushed over to make sure it was okay. I almost couldn't eat for ten minutes I was laughing so hard, but... I managed. :) My fiancée got halibut with plantains. This, too, was delicious, albeit perhaps a bit basic. But, I think the stew was a big winner. The place is expensive! I think this worked out to be our most expensive meal. But, if you order the more unique and colourful menu items, you'll have a dining experience that's well worth it.

The atmosphere and service was definitively a Five. I had Paella that was delicious. It had several shrimp, mussels and squid. I asked for a side house salad that was huge and flavorful dressing . The Flan was the star of my meal! Melt in your mouth delicious!

The "manager's number" we were told to contact about all the issues we encountered trying to eat here

I was looking forward to eating here, but literally everything went wrong and we were never actually served a meal! An hour after we ordered the waiter informed us my meal was sold out. The appetizer he finally brought was served cold. He apologized a lot, but basically asked us to leave as it sounded like the other meal had not even been started. He originally offered to comp the appetizer and drinks, but then backtracked when we agreed. We were told no manager was working to approve that. The whole experience was absurd. Everywhere else is now closed and I never actually got to eat dinner. I'm amazed this place is still in business, but you should avoid it until they can get their act together.

VACATIONERS, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. Came here with my family of 5, parents wanted to treat us to a nice dinner on Christmas. The rooftop was full and there were 2 waiters. Our waitress was actually very sweet but failed to make up for the poor food which was cold and many dishes were tasteless. Our drinks were watered down we didn't even get a second round and asked for water. We brought up every concern as it came up but were surprise when we barely finished our entrees of fried cod and mixed seafood/meat paella that we had a full $400 bill. The waitress apologized and thanked us for the feedback. My brother, feeling bad for my parents having to pay for a full bill with no manager coming by the table went up to the bar where he was. I was not there for the entire conversation but when I came by the manager was being so disrespectful and rude. I was in quite shock the lack of customer service this man had. Saying he didn't care about our business and we could pay and leave. He made a very upsetting comment that he wanted to take a picture of our id so that we wouldn't dispute the charge. We paid the bill and walked out. Gladly. Don't make the same mistake we did.

    Thanksgiving Dinner!

Extremely slow service given it was Thanksgiving day and all ..the food was mediocre and very expensive. It was $250 for 4 of us. We had the paella, fish and chips and lamb chops. Our drinks came after the food .... It was not a good experience. Our Canadian server was really nice and apologetic the whole time

Here is why you shouldn't come here. So we stumbled upon condal. The atmosphere felt very chic and a little fancy. We were seated after making a quick reservation. The menu wasn't anything that crazy. Nothing seemed like "I gotta have that" everything was also very pricey. Now, I don't mind mine paying money as long as the food is worth the price. We ordered the halibut. $38. Again, if it's worth $38 then bring it on! (See photo) When you're charging $38 for halibut the waitstaff and overall experience MUST match that. And unfortunately, it didn't. The owner or manager was in an iPad taking care of business and for a small place (we sat indoors) as the owner/ manager he should have made some rounds felt the vibes of people eating. Asked how things were going. Just be a great host. But nope nothing. So okay, we order sangria (nothing crazy at all) half way through the waitress doesn't come over to ask how things are going, if we want another drink, nothing. Fast forward....the halibut arrives. It had some sort of cream sauce and a tomato based sauce. Now when you have a lot of sauces on a plate you have to think about how it will ruin the integrity of the tostones. There was way too much sauce on the plate. The biggest thing was THE HALIBUT WAS SO BLAND. We had to ask for lemon, salt, garlic. For $38 it was NOT worth it. The 1 star is because the fish was cooked perfectly. The place indoors is small. So with alll the staff and manager there. They should have check in and just shown a lot more hospitality. Please save your money and appetite and go else where.

Best steak I've had in a long time! They know how to cook a steak perfectly at Condado. Our shrimp appetizer did not disappoint either. The Atmosphere is romantic and relaxed. Service was incredible. I recommend this place as a must to anyone in the area. I will be back for certain. Please don't miss out on this gem

A nice tapas spot in Condado The inside is super modern looking but the rooftop seating area is where we opted to spend our last night in San Juan. Very attentive service from everyone here. The menu doesn't have that many choices but the food they do have is excellent. My favorites were the frIed cod and the paella.

The place is in located in a lively neighborhood where you can go walk off all the food you just ate. Nice ambiance with the rooftop. The place is practically empty and it was still average at best. You cannot charge 5 star price with 2-3 star service/food. Our group tried most of the apps and they were not memorable. While they were well flavored, it seemed like they are all missing another seasoning that would really make it pop. We ordered a bottle of wine for the place and our wine glasses came back dirty. The paella's and all the different variations were good so can't discount that. The lamb shank and short rib were really the highlight of the night and that's why I'm being generous with the 3 star. Please do not come here if you are celebrating a special occasion, you will be disappointed and let down.

Phew. This is the one word reaction I have and it's for many reasons. Ranking vibe, service, and food. I'll start with food. Really wish there were more pictures for sizing but the portions were a lot larger the entrees than I expected and a lot smaller than expected for the appetizers. If I could do it again in a large group I would've ordered 4-5 dishes for our group of 8 to share and it would've been more than enough. Everyone walked out stuffed. I had the squid ink rice and it was so rich and delicious. Surprise shrimps were included when the menu only mentioned squid and calamari rings with this dish. This could definitely be split for two meals or for two people. When I sampled a few of the stewed meats (lamb, short rib, pork stew) those were all done very well, enough for my friends who ordered it to say it could be a speciality of theirs. Those were all the most memorable foods of the night for sure. The paella was ok from the small bit I tried but I'll get into the concerns shortly. But I've had better paella in other places. The paella was ordered but had to be taken back because the wrong topping was given and a whole other one had to be made. It takes a while to make so it definitely prolonged the food for that individual. When it came to service, things felt flustered and disorganized throughout. For a place with such high dollar signs for food, I expected more for service and quality. I'm not sure why there's such a small bar menu. Plus, many of the people in my group felt there was not a lot of alcohol in the mojitos we ordered. The phrase uttered by a friend was "it tastes like a slightly alcoholic sprite". When wine came out, we felt there could've been more wine options. Not only that the wine glasses came out spotted, dirty, or even having remnants of old wine still in the cup. Service and checking on the small details would be a suggestion I'd make to Condal to make a huge difference. Unfortunately that did stick out to my group as we were already paying a lot of for the experience and expected better service and selection when it came to drinks. What redeems Condal for pretty good food and subpar service is the vibe. Yes we had to wait longer because of an error and we had grumbled about the service, but the views and the ambiance is something that worked out so well. It created excitement and magic for anticipation of a classy night for celebration or a romantic date. We were there long enough to be the last people on the rooftop terrace and got very gorgeous photos. Luckily it also allowed our group to continue to have good company. All in all, Condal has a lot of potential. For the price point they are currently at (it's more $$$ than $$ in my opinion) the food could have some more unique items added and improve its service. I had to think through all my reflections and phew here we are!

After a day of sailing we decide to eat at the restaurant that was recommended. Uber'ed there only to find out that they were under construction. So we took a few minutes to figure out a plan B and so we walked here... They didn't open for dinner until 6:00, but the Manager took care of us and on the rooftop!!! It was nice and cool upstairs and we were the only ones there. We ordered beers and the meatballs & croquettes... The meatballs were amazing (and we got another order to-go) and the bread was delicious! I could tell that they were homemade. The croquettes were good, and the tasted like authentic fish sticks, but I could also tell that they were made fresh! Lastly, we had the lobster & shrimp risotto and it was beyond delicious... It's the 2nd best risotto I've ever had, next to Gordon Ramsey's Hell's Kitchen... The reviews were bad, but thankfully I eat with my eyes 1st!!! Hopefully they can get great staff like the Manager... The food is excellent and the Chef's are on point!!!

This is a great change of pace if you've just been grabbing food during your vacation in the Condado area. A friend and I had a late lunch reservation after a nice spa day. It was pretty empty and we were the only ones inside besides staff. Our server was a lovely gentleman who was kind and thoughtful. We ordered a bottle of delicious Garnacha and had Empanadillas de Espinaca & Queso Crema (spinach and cheese turnovers) and Patatas Bravas (potatoes) as appetizers. Both were delicious with the turnovers being our favorite. My friend had the Estofado de Costillas de Res con Majado de Viandas (short rib) but thought it was too fatty which reduced the portion considerably. I had the Rodaballo a la Condal (halibut) which was okay but a little forgettable. Before leaving, our kind server gave us a small sweet treat to share. So nice of him...he was great. Cute place with okay food, good wine, but even better service.

We were able to snag a reservation but for a late time which was about an hour and a half before close. The service was super great but one thing I wished they mentioned that the bottled water was going to be a $40 charge lol. Makes sense for any upscale restaurant though. Should've mentioned we wanted tap so fair warning, ask cause you WILL get charged haha. We had a group of 10 and for how big the group was, the food came out pretty fast. I don't think we ever had a time between drinks to entrees where we were waiting for food to come out. We got the watermelons mojito for drinks since it was the most raved about. It was good but personally nothing crazy for me. 8/10 score on that. We also curry popcorn chicken, the ahi tuna lollipops, the empanadillas and the goat cheese quesadillas for apps and honestly overall 9/10. This is where I don't like the sweetness part of this meal. The empanadillas were what I was most excited for but it was more sweet then savory which sort of lose my appetite a little. I think if you like that kind of taste then it's going to be good. It wasn't a bad taste at all. Just too sweet for my liking. The curry popcorn chicken was good and the lollipops were great. Again, nothing crazy. The goat cheese quesadillas was good as well but again, too sweet for my liking. Now on to the entree, they didn't have the porkchop since we came late so I ended up getting the porkchop belly dish. When it came out, it looked amazing but then I got a whiff of it and smelled cinnamon. That's when I was sort of disappointed. It was like eating pork but tasting Cinnamon Toast Crunch and as said before, it tasted great but too sweet for me. This one was way too sweet to where it seemed like a dessert item. I just had poor luck and got one of the one items that were sweet. This doesn't tank the rating down whatsoever because I also should've read it had cinnamon. It would've been great if they made a dipping sauce or something to pair it with and not have it on the pork belly itself. I got to try other dishes my friends got which were good as well but I wish I got to try something else. If I came back I would try the sold out item which was the pork shank or the sea bass. I know for a fact the sea bass was amazing. Had a bite of it and thought "I'll come back for that" Overall, 10/10 experience and nothing bad about the place but gotta try different items when I go next time. I understand the hype now

Not only that, she made it weeks in advance because reservations are hard to come by. We arrived for dinner before reservation time and we attempted to open the front door. It was locked, so we along with two other couples, walked to see if there was a side entrance.. Nope! We kept walking to the rear and stopped a random parking lot attendant that shirt had a different restaurant's name on it. He asked us if we had reservations for Santaella and we said yes, and he directed us to a rear entrance. Once inside, my friend realized this was NOT Santaellas but a rooftop restaurant with an entirely different name. Visibly perturbed, she asked our server QUESTIONS! He said, it's the same restaurant, however, only the rooftop is open on Sundays and it's named Azotea.. WHAT?!? LOL! Because we took an Uber, we decided to stay a while. The menu was extremely limited, but we decided to try the Tamarind margaritas, which were really good, along with two appetizers, the tuna lollipops and the pulled pork quesadilla. Both VERY good, but the dinner menu was lacking. That said, I suggested we go to STK for the seafood tower that I had my eye on the evening before, so we exited stage right! Shame on Santaella for accepting reservations through Open Table knowing full well they are not open. I'm giving them two stars because Azotea was decent but it definitely wasn't what she was going for!

This is global techniques blended with locally sourced Puerto Rican ingredients. From the moment you walk in, you feel welcome. I was there to celebrate my birthday (a reservation is a must). I asked if I could be seated in a different section of the restaurant, and even though they were packed, they said absolutely and found me a lovely seat in the bar area. The staff is knowledgeable and attentive. I suffer from severe food allergies but wanted to experience their tasting menu. My server spoke to the chef directly and then took the time to walk me through every option. I TRULY appreciated that they did not take anything off the menu but rather told me how they could adjust for my allergies. That is very rare and so very much appreciated that they went that extra mile for me. I highly recommend the tasting menu. It's 5 courses and they give you 3 options to choose from, within each course. And for the price ($85), a great value. Everything was delicious but I highly recommend the Breadfruit Gnocchi, Rainbow Runner Crudo, and Criollo Duck Mofongo. Chefs kiss! What I also noticed was, even though they were insanely busy, they didn't make you feel rushed. The invited you to savor the experience - which I did. Next time you are in San Juan, make a reservation and go. You won't be disappointed!

Had we each ordered our own tasting menu, it would have been far more food than we wanted...something we found to be a fairly common theme with portion sizes throughout Puerto Rico. The standout of the evening was the Criollo Duck Mofongo, which was absolutely exquisite and easily the best mofongo we had on our trip by far. The cocktails were tasty and unique, but a bit small for the price. This definitely isn't an every-night kind of restaurant...the prices are on the higher side.
