I don't understand the hype behind this place. Can we get past the "glory days" of this restaurant and realize that it's overpriced slop? The staff members generally aren't too friendly, either. Coney Island Lunch, I love you. So I know Johnstown isn't much of a tourist destination, but if you're ever in the area, you have to stop here. The workers are generally toothless, not pretty, with hairnets, and maybe sweaty. They line hotdogs up on their (bare) arms while they slather on the fixings. You're not going to get anything fancy here, just great classic coneys and sundowners. It's an institution, my great-grandparents got coneys from here. I yearn for these things while I'm away. Oh, and people who have grown up knowing Johnstown--did you know The Coney has a WEBSITE?!? It's crazy, it's operated by Mrs. Contacos's son, and they sell shirts! And hats! So funny. I grew up in Johnstown and I was sad to hear that Coney Island closed down. But when I found out it reopened, I came back to visit home so fast. I just had to get a Sundowner. Overall, everything was generally the same. The burger might have been a little bit different but still had the same Sundowner taste I grew up loving. I didn't try any of the hotdog because the burger filled me up but they looked just as good as they used to. During my next visit, I'll be sure to try them!! read more

Just another hot dog place ... I mean it was good don't get me wrong :) the chili was bland and the cheese was not what I expected ... We had our meal paid for so I'm unsure of the price. They have signs posted no cell phone use at the counter and only accept cash. As I can understand the cell phone rule the no credit card is hard we travel abd do not carry cash most of the time so that's a business breaker for a tourist - the Mac and cheese was delicious and they are super quick and taking orders and getting it all out to you. My husband and I stopped in one night after an expensive but, how shall I say, "decidedly light" dinner at Backdoor Cafe. I found the place to be quite charming and authentic. The late-night staff was super-friendly and the other patrons provided an interesting mix. I'm not a connoisseur of hot dogs, but I thought the Coney's offerings were solid! My Dad grew up in Johnstown over 30 years ago, and I grew up hearing him rave about this place. Still, even though I've lived within an hour of the area most of my life, I never made it a point to visit the Coney- In the future I will! read more

I've been coming here since I was a wee lass. Not much has changed at Coney Island, but that's not always a bad thing. When you first walk in, the intoxicating smells from the grill make you care less about the 1950's decor. I have nothing but good things to say about their most famous item--the Coney Island hot dog. The dog itself is a Berk's wiener...which I love and use at home. They are really tasty on their own. When you pair the dog with the chili sauce...magic happens! The hot dog with everything is NOT pretty. The sauce is ugly, but it's so incredibly yummy! I also love the sundowners-- hamburger with cheese, a fried egg, onions, mustard, and chili sauce. It is probably a heart attack on a bun, but it is sooooo worth it! I usually get a raisin cookie or two to round off the gorge-fest. The cookies are just like what my grandma used to make. All in all, great place to get an inexpensive meal and they're open late...like 4am late. Perfect place to grab a bite after a night at a bar. Cash only, though! read more

The hot dogs are amazing all the food is well prepared and most of the people were fairly courteous, but I saw a few miscommunication issues with the staff including one member that checked everyone out just talking while the line just continued to grow, I believe they also need more staff because they have the ability, supplies, and machinery to cater to more people but they don't have the staff. read more

The food here is simply disgusting. What could be one of those fantastic restaurants you see on Diner's Drive-in and Dives is simply a restaurant where you really do have to be stoned drunk to enjoy the food. I was born in Johnstown in 1952 and remember Coney Island Hotdogs as long as I can remember. The workers lining the Hotdogs cl ear up their arms was amazing. I left for the military in 1970 and Coney Island was the last place I ate before basic training. I`ve lived many places since those days and have yet to taste anything like Coney Island. Still probably one of best chili dogs all around I've had. Simple and no frills. Dog grilled on flattop, chili, mustard, and onions. And messy, just like they were meant to be! The space time continuum has also practically stopped at this place....25 years between visits and its still the same. Still so delicious! A true Johnstown tradition that I hope will live on forever!! The only complaint I have is the thick cut burger they use now. I always liked the thin burgers they used before, although it seems like better quality now. Also, the fries were too soggy to eat, not crispy and were doused with black pepper. We threw them away. Chili sauce was perfect, as always!! The manager is always nice and jokes with you too. They accept debit and credit cards so we eat here a lot more! read more

I grew up in Johnstown and Coney Island was the place to go for the best coney dog. Back in the late sixties they were the best. After working the 11-7 shift at Bethlehem Steel my friends and I would go there for our morning wake up dog. They were the best back then but the sauce has changed so many times since the nineties. About 4-5 years ago the sauce was awful. I knew something was wrong when I saw the yellowish tan sauce they put on my dog. Threw them away after the first bite. Awful is being nice. I guess that's why they closed. I went back after they reopened and they finally had a sauce which was 90% original. After hearing all about it, Coney island didn't exactly live up to the hype. All we tried were the hot dogs though. Which tasted fine... nothing ground breaking. Cafeteria style with the old style benches and lighting. Most people come here for an after-drinking snack. I could see how the grease would be appealing in that regard. As small as Johnstown is, this place is iconic for this town. They have been here a long time and they have quite a following. It is one of the last restaurants in the downtown Johnstown area. They load it up with their version of a chili and heaps of finely cut onions so if you are eating this late night, heartburn may be in your future. ''Twas a mild summer evening, a Monday to be exact. I was pleased to be granted access to the line on this eve as I had been turned away 2 prior times since the rebirth of the Johnstown staple. Once for the was locked at 8:05 and again because the cutoff time for the line is but 7:15 in the pm. But alas I was granted a turn this time as I had made it before 6:00. At first notice I found the smell to be but the same as it had always been which brought me great joy. As I inches closer to the store front I was taken aback, it was if that had never closed at all. The one strange thing I found is that instead of chaos at the counter people were standing back waiting to be called as if it were some sort of strict delicatessen. One by one the people made their way to the counter muttering their orders to the familiar faces behind the counter. ALAS we were called, a small group of only 3. I placed my order 2 sundowners no onions and 2 hot dogs no onions add cheese. 2 chocolate milks and 1 raisin filled cookie. The hot dog order was filled post haste and as we paid for our meal we found the prices to be quite reasonable as well as the chocolate milks to be of a larger size then previously noted. Due to a small mathematical error we were granted another hot dog for free. Oh glorious day. As we gathered our items and took them to a table and sat down I inspected the dogs, I found them to be made to my satisfaction and tried a small dollup of the classic coney sauce on my finger tip. GREAT SCOTT! they've done it, it was the sauce of before. Rejoicing in the moment I went for my first bite and found the dog to be spot on, delicious. Every bite was as it was before the closing of not better. After a brief wait about halfway into my 2nd hot dog the sundowner sandwiches arrived and with great sarcasm piercing though her lips the maiden wished us a good dinner as she turned I noticed the mark of lord Stanley placed upon her arm. A veteran to the Coney Island game if I've ever seen one. I digress. The sundowners placed in front of us looking to be quite appealing. Upon placing one in my hand I noticed the bun to be quite hard. Not toasted, but perhaps stale. Then it happened I took the bite. And instantly noticed something afoul. The beef man THE BEEF ''twas not the beef of before. Their beef was small and tasted... off. I finished my meal in disappointment. Over all service is the same, hot dogs are better then I remember but the sundowners should have been the star but ended up being a let down. I travel a great deal for work and decided to try out Coney Island Lunch while in the area. To be pointed, this is without a doubt the worst food I've ever encountered. In order to give perspective, this is the first review I've ever felt so passionately inclined to give. I downloaded the yelp app and created a new account specifically to warn others from entering this establishment. For more specifics: Food: I had a double cheeseburger with everything on it. The meat, which I can hardly bring myself to refer to it as, was gristly and tasteless. The onions were thawed and mushy and the chili was runny and almost meatless. Cleanliness: two inches of dust and grime hang from the ceiling in places. A baseball bat hanging behind the register is coated in filth and I can only assume the laziness displayed by the rest of the restaurant is displayed in their cleaning of the food preparation area. Service: I was greeted by a very unpleasant woman who seemed to be upset that I was not familiar with their menu. Then after forgetting what I ordered and asking for my order again, I needed to repeat the order a third time to the register in order to pay for my meal. Please be aware also that this is a CASH ONLY establishment. Overall, I can not say enough how much I recommend avoiding this place. I will never set foot in there again. read more

Best nostalgic nuance dining, definitely a style of a bygone era. There are no frills here just quality , fresh food, unchanged because the ,"why fix it of ain't broke" is in full definition. Hadn't eaten here for 20 years but it was the same , except they may have changed the oil for the French Fries . The dogs are just as fine as I remembered , juicy and made to order .
