We got the 1 piece fish and chips ($15.95) here. We didn't get tartar sauce but they gave us one anyways. This place has way less of a line so you can get your food much faster. I felt like the fish was a bit oilier here and the fish itself was flaky but more like a filet you would get at the supermarket kind. The fries were pretty mediocre. My new favourite place! Forget Pajos (mediocre at best). Dave's is still my go to in Steveston, but if I'm in white rock Coney Island is the place to go! As I've had Pajo's more recently, at the time of writing, Pajo's is about $15 for 2 pieces, but they are small, like maybe around the palm of my hand. Coney island is about $12 for one piece, but that piece is around 1.5 of what Pajo's one piece is like. However, for a meal, you can easily share one piece for two people (or two pieces for two people if you're ambitious). Fries are decent, feels like freshly chipped fries. Doesn't leave your mouth with too much of a starchy taste. Generous portions of Ketchup and Tartar sauce on a take out box that doubles as a good lap table when eating outside on the pier. read more

They're huge. You've been warned. Between the halibut and the cod, we were recommended the cod. Tasted pretty good and has *almost* everything I want in my fish and chips: a nice crunchy exterior, soft and moist fish on the inside, a creamy tartar sauce, and crunchy chips. Ordered two fish (one for each of us) and they were bigger than my hands (barely finished it). Chips were great - kept reaching for more even though I was way past full. Wished there was an acidic element to cut the fried element that was a bit overwhelming (like some lime zest or something). It's a bit pricy when you look at the menu but the portion you get makes sense for what you're paying. read more

Some may be drawn to Moby Dick's just beside Coney Island, but I've eaten at both and this place definitely wins for me. Been eating here every time I've gone to White Rock ever since! The portions are huge and the fish is nicely fried with a really crunchy batter. Not to heavy and not to oily. The good thing about this place is that they fry the fish fresh for every order. I've gotten crispy and tender fish every single time. But the true winner is the tartar sauce they serve. For an extra dollar or something, you get a cup of tartar sauce, and I swear that stuff can make anything taste good. Super tangy and creamy, and fits perfectly with the fried fish. We love White Rock and Fish and Chips. If there is a place I can have Fish and Chips over and over again, it's in this place. Their fried fish is the best, just the right crunch and not too greasy. Forget about Moby Dick - if you want great, almost British style (because no matter how much a North American chipper claims to be authentic, they never are, so get your expectations at the right level when you walk in) fish and chips, come here. Generally there is lots of available seating inside, and they have a small outside seating area. Portions are HUGE, fish is awesome, chips are awesome, and the service is always fast and efficient. After spending an afternoon at White Rock fish and chips is pretty much a given but my usual haunts were either closed or had substantial lineups so I decided to try Coney Island , a diner-style spot rocking some seriously kitschy 70s decor. Thankfully the food had far more going for it than the environment it was served in. The cod I ordered was lightly battered, tasty, and served with a proper tartar sauce on the side while the fries were crisp and well cooked. I have been coming here since I was a kid. Great memories of Fish & chips on the beach. This family run business is an institution and they have been making their recipe since day 1. The Cod is large flat fillets that are nice and thin, they have their batter which is part tempura and forms a lovely crisp covering. Super fresh. The chips are alway fresh made and delicious. In my humble estimation the BEST fish and chip joint on White Rock Beach. Moby's Dick gets more pub and more people because of it's location, it's outdoor seating and whatever else, but the fish is not as good, nor are the portions as good as at Coney Island. Not to bash on Dick, it's a perfectly fine place, and my choice after Coney. I'm just a sucker for big portions and Coney Island has big pieces of fish ... the biggest on the beach - although some will say that it's because their pieces of fish are thin, which is true, they're thinner, but I like it better overall. A 4 piece cod and chip will be less than $15 and be plenty for 2 normal eaters. Not a fan of their coleslaw at all, but that's because I prefer creamy as opposed to the vinaigrette. Also, for kids the deep fried scallops were a hit - and there seemed to be a lot of them (24 or so) but they're really small and tasty but not really something to fill an adult stomach. The "calimari" here is something to be completely passed - DON'T get it, it's just simple squid rings and you don't get that many. The bottomline is this is a fish and chip place and a damn good one at that. read more

I tried this joint one time when we went down to White Rock and the lineup for Moby Dick's was way too long to bare. This place had a small line and I had heard good things about it. We went in expecting comparable food to Moby Dick's. We ordered the cod and chips, although the batter used was beer batter, the fish was much oilier than Moby Dick's which was a big no-no for me. Eating fish & chips is unhealthy as it is and when the fish is drenched in oil, I'm walking away. Secondly the chips were not as sweet and flavourful as Moby Dick's. All in all, this is an average joint at best. Not impressed and we're not returning. The Good: Nothing really. The Bad: Oil drenched fish & lower quality fries Best Bet: Moby Dick's is worth the wait, just walk over 2/3 shops. read more

Okay so the Stripe in White Rock is long and covered top east to west in seafood but honestly the fish at Coney Island is the best! We were there on a sunny Sunday evening around 730 to order still bright out and 2 places were already closed. I've heard Moby Dick one of the closed places around 7 isn't that good anyway. So we ended up ordering a 2 pc. Cod with fries and a 1 pc. Halibut with fries both with extra tarter and 1 water 1 coke zero. So the prices were on par or cheaper with most of the strip and definitely cheaper than the pubs for sure! The location looks very well hidden and completely run down in terms of decor even for us who ordered at the takeout window but don't let that fool you! It took us maybe 8mins to reach the ordering lady who was friendly and fast and about 25mins to get our order which was about average considering how busy we were and how fresh the food was. The cod and halibut were both giant fillets and were battered so evenly and fried to a perfect crisp. The tarter sauce was not to heavy and just smooth enough that I could just dip in the fish without dropping or having the fish rip off the batter. Delicious! Fries were good and nicely salted. But I don't think people come for the fries haha! Best fish on the strip by a mile! Can't wait to go back my mouth is already watering! read more

I had come down to the beach to walk my dogs with my mum for the evening. We planned to get some fish n chips after for dinner. We had finished the walk and I ventured out to get the food. It was just before 8 pm and I saw that Coney Island had a take-out window so I headed over. I was greeted right away and I ordered two pieces of fish and chips, with one more piece of fish. As I was waiting I realized that the restaurant closed at 8 pm (ahh!!) so I felt terrible about ordering so close to closing. When my food came I received three HUGE pieces of fish, probably the biggest I have ever seen. Piping hot with fries and two tartars. The fish was so good and I was so grateful to have been served.
