Moby Dick's is obviously a busy place in the summer, being right across from the waterfront -- but in January, it's a sleepy area and the restaurant is active, but not too busy. We found the food unremarkable - standard fish, standard chips, standard coleslaw, standard tartar sauce. All fried food is pretty standard, pretty greasy, but not any better or worse than many fish & chips shops. So why a 3-star rating rather than 4-stars? First, there is there menu and pricing: What is called a 1-piece fish & chips comes with 2 pieces - all identified fish comes with one extra piece. It's a gimmick, and mostly just annoying. 2nd, there is a charge for everything -- Want tartar sauce? There are three sizes, three prices. Want to substitute onion rings for the fries? Can't do it, even with an up-charge, though you can order fish and you can order onion rings, each separately, each with its own price. Coleslaw? Yes, but not instead of fries. And the coleslaw is pricey - a good sized portion, but a substantial price none-the-less. The portion sizes are reasonably large, but the incessant a-la-carte with each item with a price - one feels nickled and dimed to death. The atmosphere - ok, 1950s-ish, nothing special. The staff, friendly and attentive, but young and inexperienced. And then there was the problem with the cooking -- we got 5 pieces of fish (ordered 2 and 1, which is really 2+1 and 1+1 = 5). Four of them were pretty standard. One was undercooked - cooked on the outer edges (under the fried batter), and raw and translucent on the inside. Yes, they took that off the ticket, so I didn't have to pay for it, but biting into a piece of raw fish with the outside so hot it almost burned my mouth and the inside uncooked - not so pleasant. I had high hopes for Moby Dick after hearing so many people rave about it, and there were definitely some highlights, but also a few things that left me underwhelmed. First, the good: I really appreciated the extra piece of fish! The batter was beautifully crisp and golden, and the fish itself was flaky and fresh. Classic comfort food vibes. That said, the meal ended up sitting really heavy. I don't usually feel nauseous after fish and chips, but this one left me feeling overly full and a bit off, which surprised me. The chips were not anything special but the fish was lightly fried not overly oily. Flaky and overall not bad. Love that it's served in a box so it's easy to take out The oyster burger was HUGE and very worth it for the price. It had a lot of vegetables in it and the oysters tasted not sandy or too seafoody. Large portion sizes, seaside water views. Perfect for a sunny day near the beach. The fish pieces here were massive. I was able to share the 2 pieces with my partner as it came with 3 pieces. Oil was probably a tad dirty as the batter looks quite dark. However, taste was not compromised. Clam chowder was a bit on the smaller side and wasn't as filling with clams or cream as I'd have liked. This place does get very busy so service is as good as can be expected under the circumstances on a busy sunny day. Pricing is on the steeper side but comparable to other eateries in the vicinity. My SO and I just passed the border and we were asking ourselves "where to now?". We decided to try the fish and chips in the area. This is the nearest restaurant that pinged on our location. My friend and I shared an order of 1 piece of fish and chips because we weren't too hungry, but wanted to make a pit stop for some fish and chips. The fish pieces were huge and it came with an big portion of fries, which is always appreciated. We took our box across the street and sat on a bench right in front of the water. I was surprised the fish size shrunk. It used to be as long as their serving plate and now width of the fries tray? I'm not going to comment on the price as I understand everything gone up. The fish was crispy and moist though we felt like it must have been cooked when it was still frozen; as some bits were tougher than usual to bite. Writing this review to emphasize the insane size of the tartar sauce that I just bought. Loved it. On to the review. First time here and came with absolutely no expectations. Bought a 4 piece and couldn't believe how much food we got. You pretty much get one of those cardboard boxes for 24 cans of pop, but with your food in it. They just dump the fries in and out the fish on top. My kind of eatery. Fish was fresh, batter wasn't overly greasy or thick, and the fries are what you would expect. My only regret is not eating in the restaurant. My girlfriend and I thought it would be a good idea to bring the food to the beach and eat on one of the benches. However, we didn't think about the seagulls. The Granville Island seagulls are nothing compared to these ones. They hover and get right up to you. We spent most of the time covering out food and taking quick bites when the seagulls turned away. Anyway. Would I come here again? 100% would. To satisfy a craving for fish and chips, we made the pilgrimage from New Westminster to White Rock. Moby Dick awaited us and our waistlines. We sat down at an indoor table and made our decisions. Rookie mistakes were made by each of us ordering our own fish and chips. (We should know better as we never end up finishing them due of the portion size.) No amount of tartar sauce was gonna help us devour our meals that each came with an additional piece of fish. Speaking of the tartar sauce. Yes, you've got to pay for it. However... the portion they give you is generous to say the least. The fish is really good here. The batter is light, crispy, and doesn't retain too much oil. It's definitely amongst the top battered fish I've ever had. We also ordered some breaded oysters. Those were pretty darn fantastic and I'd come back just for them.
