It's an old well kept building that's must be close to 80 years. There charm is all over it. You walk in and they have fresh flowers at every table. The ambience is great. This is a cozy hole in the wall where many regulars dine here and it is highly recommended by local shop proprietors. Montgomery's is family owned and the servers are friendly and attentive. I ordered the 2 piece cod and chips and chocolate milkshake. To cut down on plastic, cardboard straws are being used! My shake was very thick, chocolatey, without being too sweet. Best fish and chips... hand down. My family eats here every trip back to Vancouver and use to eat here for 40 years prior. Fish is fresh with a perfect deep fry.. no hard coating. Chips are always cooked to perfection...no bottom of fryer here. Coleslaw is perfect with fish and chips. This place has been here forever and so don't expect fancy decor. Ive tried them all on White Rocks water front and hands down this is the best place for halibut (not a cod eater) and chips. The batter is light and crispy as are the home fries. The halibut fresh and firm. On a rainy day you can sit inside, the large mirror makes the place bigger, brighter and reflects the view. Occasional train going by entertains the kids. I stop by and then eat at one of the picnic tables on the waterside of the tracks, ask for a box to make carry your food easier. Theres tables out front and on the side and you can have a beer if you like. Open all summer and on nice sunny days in the fall and winter. If you're driving down in the off season phone just to make sure their open. The counter staff always friendly and courteous. If its busy could take some time but for me always worth it. I was not having a good White Rock day. I call it a WR day 'cause I'm never in WR. I loved our little walk at the beach but once we got to Marine Drive, it was like being trapped in a busy tourist town with nowhere to park. We were hungry. It was a fish and chips day again. We ended up here just because it was the first fish and chips place we passed. There was a small outdoor seating area. We wanted to be outside 'cause it was a nice day. That idea didn't last long, the outdoor table we mentally reserved as we were ordering at the window disappeared on us. Alright...so trying something new, I went for the scallops and chips. I asked the girl at the window what she would recommend, shrimp, oysters, or scallop and she said scallops. 8 pieces of scallops and chips for $14.95. The scallops were the size of multivitamins. Ok, maybe pieces of elephant snot. Honestly though, they were the size of mini (emphasis on mini) marshmallows with deep fried coating that didn't appear or taste freshly made. The coating that comes on frozen fried foods was the kind of coating that was on these scallops. This person was not happy. I was also not happy with the yam fries. Apparently the cod and chips were decent. We bought ourselves some ice cream to help us forget about the fish and chip experience. On the way back to the car, a bird pooed on me. Only Montgom's stays top notch every season. - superb fish in light, crispy batter - great selection of fresh fish that they cook perfectly - addictive and authentic chips - not fries I've been other places over past two years because Montgom's used to be closed Mondays. So disappointing, certainly was just an okay fish and chip place. Had a take-out 1 piece cod, asked during the time of ordering "Does Tartar sauce come with it? The Server replied "yes". At time to pick up , I asked "Is the tartar sauce inside?" She then pointed to the Sysco 'House Recipe' packages of sauce on the counter beside the ketchup and vinegar. No lemon either. My favourite fish ' n ' chips place on the east strip. Batter is crispy and not overdone. Fish is wonderful; I usually get the salmon as I love the flavour. Seating inside is tight but the outside has expanded since they widened the sidewalk. Great for quieter visits while listening to waves and seagulls (which don't come in to attack you). Have been here 10 times or so. The beer is not cheap but I don't need it anyway. Take out service available and usually open 30-60 minutes later than eat-in. Call ahead to find out if they're staying open ! Service always friendly and quick. read more

My daughter and I ended up here after the place we were trying to go for lunch was unexpectedly closed. We're vegetarian so our options are fairly limited at all the fish and chip places. We ordered the deep fried pickles and yam fries. The Pickles were great. So tasty. The yam fries were good. We didn't try any of the mayo dips with them as eating a completely deep fried lunch was enough fat for my digestion. Pros- the staff was very friendly. The pickles were great. Cons- the place looked dirty/dingy. May be attributed to all the deep frying? I was afraid to let my purse touch the floor. The prices were a little high (which I know is attributed to being on the beach in White Rock). Overall it was okay. I would order the pickles again. Love the cod and halibut. Sometimes they give extra pieces. Prices are a bit steep but hey, it's fish n chips at White Rock! The tartar sauce they make in house is the bomb. But sometimes the staff don't want to give you any of the house made tartar for free... That's a shame. Usually staff are friendly but it's odd that we have to pay extra for better tartar. For being all fried food, it was great. We had deep-fried pickles for an appetizer (sliced into six planks and fried), fish & chips (cod), and a deep-fried Mars bar. Call 604.536.7779 to make sure you get a spot! Fish and fries are both fried in 100% canola oil (but separate friers, so the chips are gluten friendly. You can get your fish grilled too!) and the fish - cod, halibut or salmon, is all cut fresh every day. The potatoes are done on a hand held cutter in the back, just like the good old days! We live in south surrey and have never gone to Montgomery's before. We decided to try it on a sunny busy holiday Monday. We were expecting it to be closed Ike several of the other restaurants on the strip but it was open Kandy was the greatest waitress we ever had in a long time. We tried the deep fried pickles and they were great. My son had a custom made hotdog and my daughter had the cod and chips. My husband and I had the halibut. It was all very nice and hot.
