    UBC Botanical Garden

    UBC

I was staying on campus for a few days and decided to visit the botanical garden for a nice walk. I…read morewas pleasantly surprised with the amount of flowering plants as the weather was still quite cold. The trail map was easy to follow and there were multiple areas to explore. I was fascinated by the medicinal herb area as each plant described the ailments it could treat. There was also a large area for growing produce that is being used to feed needy people in Vancouver. A portion of the trail is paved and there are also trails that are mostly mulch. It takes about 2 hours to cover the whole garden if you go at a leisurely pace. There are restrooms throughout the garden and the staff is very friendly. The parking lot is spacious and the parking rates are inexpensive. I believe it was $1.50 CA per hour. The google maps did route me to the back of the garden (no parking or entrance) so you may have to loop around to get to the front entrance. There is an information booth right in the front and the staff will give you a quick explanation of the layout of the place.

There were not many visitors so the views were unspoiled and magnificent. We visited specifically the Physic garden full of medicinal plants and the Food garden with edible plants. In the Physic garden, many varieties of herbs and medicinal species were showcased. Each is separately labelled for its uses and origin. As it's early in the season, the Food garden only had some hardy seedlings planted including onion, kale, cabbage, broccoli, rhubarb and Brussell sprouts. The dwarf apple bushes were just showing new leaves. Accordingly the produce harvested from this garden will be donated to charity. Even in early May the azaleas were in full bloom and prints a colorful picture. Tulips were at their last stage but still provide a rainbow of colors. There are hiking trails through the wooded area within the garden . You can easily spent 3-4 hours wondering through the park like setting studying the wide collection of plant species and enjoy the view! There is a parking lot nearby with minimal charge for parking. Entrance fee is very reasonable and discounts are available for seniors and children. Fees are in Canadian dollars so it's an added bonus for US visitors.

Do not think the Natural History Museum in London or the Met in Manhattan. That would be an - apples & oranges comparison, with the former two leading the way when it comes to museums worldwide. The MOA while not as grandiose as the Met, really stands out on its own showcasing mainly First Nations art along with other various artwork. It is a splendid museum. Budget to easily spend a minimum 3 to 5 hours here but definitely give yourself more time & do not rush. There's a lot to see here. There are guided tours available with your paid entry fee. Check at the front desk for more information. Make a note to also go outside of the museum & check out the Totems. Make sure you have a big brekkie or lunch before coming here. The cafe here sells limited items & you cannot bring drinks or food into the museum. Do check online for opening hours in order to give yourself enough time here. Limited parking is available. I parked at the Student Union building then walked over to the MOA along Main Mall & then through the Rose Garden to get here - approximately a 20 minute walk one way. It wasn't cheap but I was with visitors from out of town, so I didn't mind as I was showing them around UBC at the same time. Honestly, I can't wait to go again.

Back here again. I had to drop someone off at Horseshoe Bay early in the morning and decided to…read moretreat myself to a breakfast sandwich here on my way back. The one that my daughter had raved about. I had that with a Coconut Matcha. Both of them were super yummy! I can see why my daughter loves that breakfast sandwich so much. They had a different flavor of quiche from the one I had tried the first time we came here and that looked very appealing as well. I hope they'll have it again whenever next we make it back here together. The eggin my sandwich was so fluffy. My Coconut Matcha was very impressive too. I loved how I could taste the flavors of both the Coconut and that Matcha. Neither one was too overwhelming. They had the same Thai Iced Tea and Passionfruit Lemonade that they had last time, so I am guessing that their feature drinks rotate on a monthly basis. They have so many other interesting things that you can buy and take home in addition to the foods that you can eat right then and there. Lots of interesting frozen meals such as soups, stews, mac n cheese, lasagna and sheperd's pie. They even have Vegetarian options for the lasagna and sheperd's pie. Outside of frozen meals, they've got interesting condiments and sauces you can buy, and their Honey Chai which is on the drink menu seems to be available for purchase. It comes in a jar and looks like some kind of thick honey-like consistency that you stir with some hot water and/or milk I would assume. Basically, they sell lots of stuff that you could take home and keep in your pantry. I guess that's why they call this place The Modern Pantry! Really starting to fall in love with this place.

I'm still thinking about that apple oat cake... and yes, I went back for the iced matcha twice in one week. It's a cute and cozy cafe you can go to read a book, get work done, or catchup with friends. 2232 Marine Dr. Unit 102, West Vancouver, BC V7V 1KR 8am-4pm The best thing about this coffeeshop is the free street parking, because most places in the lower mainland don't have free street parking on the same block as the cafe. The con: no plugs. The only available charging ports were usb ports so I couldn't charge my laptop. Food 5/5 Parking 5/5 Ambiance 5/5 Service 4/5 (the first time I visited I only got a matcha iced latte so the service was good. The second time I visited I got an iced matcha latte, a cake, and a sandwich. I got my iced matcha and the cake within 5-10 minutes but they forgot my sandwich. I thought they were warming it up and since they suddenly got busy I gave them the benefit of the doubt. But after 20-25 minutes I noticed no one was behind the counter anymore. I went and inquired about my sandwich and they said they likely forgot. She apologized and warmed up my sandwich and brought it to my table. The individual taking my order seemed new so maybe he forgot to take it out of the fridge to warm it up. )
