I have been with consumer cellular for over 7 years. I have even told people about the great service. 1) They say you get a discount if you're a mbr of AARP. The savings (I just discovered) is $1.00 a month. AARP is $16.00 a year. NO savings at all! 2) I just bought a new phone and a screen protector. The screen protector I received is flawed. They do not do refunds for those. I paid $21.00 for it - thinking they would have a higher quality product. I was wrong. Do not purchase this unless you go to astore and have them put it on before you purchase it and see that it works. I will not be giving them a good review going forward. I'm very disappointed. There was a time when I would have given them 5 stars. I have had service with them since 2014. Don't know how much longer. They use to answer the phone within 3 rings. Now they simply don't. You go through an endless amount of rigamarole, and you still often cannot connect. But when you do, they are no longer nice. They are decidedly not nice. They charge more than they advertise. They say it's taxes. Nonsense. Taxes do not add 60% to the bill. They, quite simply, treat like garbage trying to talk to them and they rip you off. Never do they say, oh, let's make this right. Randall Robinson Code #1121 Called to upgrade phones and try and get a better monthly rate (10 year customer). 1st Issue: Was told if an AARP member my rate would be $50.00. next day signed with AARP, called CC back and was then told it's only a 5% reduction. 2nd Issue: Bough 2x new phones after being told the "current promotion" allowed for a $299 price for each. when shipment arrived the Work Order paper stated the cost is $599 each, only a $600 lie. CS said they would escalate to upper management, but I am still screwed no matter the resolve. 2+ year customer - LEAVING due to dishonest business practices. What just happened: I tried to buy a Google Pixel 9 during their "$400 off" promotion. The homepage showed the discount, but the cart charged full price ($799 vs $399). When I called, they promised to honor the price but then broke their promise after charging my card $895 and shipping the phone. I returned the unopened phone since they were now charging $400 more than they agreed to charge. When they received the unopened phone, they kept $17 in shipping and upgrade fees, even though they were the ones that shipped the phone under false conditions and there was no upgrade. Ongoing problem: They add large hidden fees to their advertised prices. Two years ago, I comparison shopped and chose Consumer Cellular for their $38/month plan. I was disappointed when I got my first bill of $57/month, 50% higher than advertised! I stayed since it still wasn't a terrible price and switching carriers is such a pain. However, these hidden fees are deceptive and keep consumers from being able to comparison shop. Customer service: Supervisor "Jose" was rude and dismissive when I asked for the $17 they promised to refund. Bottom line: Consumer Cellular uses bait-and-switch tactics, breaks promises, and hides true costs. My $38 plan costs $57 and their "$400 off" promotion didn't work when I tried to use it. Consumer Cellular thinks when you order the sim cards, your service/account is created. when i did get to making the carrier change, THEY WOULD NOT GIVE ME THE 2ND MONTH FREE. ad insult to injury, my calls keep getting dropped. i now received my 2nd bill and it's higher than when i was with t-mobile and I have their AARP 2 line plan. I noticed an ad for a special promotion in AARP the Magazine. It was $55 for 2 lines with unlimited talk/text/and data and the second month's fees waived. I just received my bill for the second month, and it was NOT WAIVED. I contacted Consumer Cellular, and they told me the promotion code was not input by their employee when I signed up therefore, I am not eligible for the second month waiver. Due to their admitted omission, I must pay the monthly bill. Their claim of outstanding customer service is a joke. On a fixed income and changed carriers for savings that were promised. Had a HORRIBLE experience with Consumer Cellular. Started service with Consumer Cellular 12/26/25. Recieved an IPhone 17 pro from them on Jan 4. Had terrible calling from the start. Robotic sounding, calls dropped. Called CC, they were extremely nice except for Miranda, but dragged me thru 14 hours over the next two weeks trying to correct problem. Running a factory reset, loosing 1/2 my apps, contacts and images. They bounced me between them and Apple. Told me the problem was with the phone and Apple had to warranty it. Apple ran multiple diagnostic on the phone said nothing was wrong with it and it was the cellular service. So here I am in the middle with no one wanting to take responsibility. I asked to return the phone and Miranda said I past the return date. Even though I have been calling from the start and is documented. Finally went down to the Apple Store and sat there with their technicians with this phone. Again their testing is showing nothing wrong. I spent 2 hours sitting in Apple Store after their testing talking with CC and having the Apple representative tell them they cannot take a phone back on warranty if there is nothing wrong with it. Started out switching our family from AT&T to save a little money. The activation process was SO HARD and took SO MANY PHONE CALLS to support that the savings were not worth it. I was told contradictory information by each representative. I was not told until the very end that you could not forward the emails with eSIM links. Switched to Consumer Cellular (CC) when I learned my previous mobile service provider (ATT) was supporting OAN (One America Network). The wireless service is through the same towers as ATT, but for about half the cost. That cost differential comes up in their customer service. My blood pressure always rises when I call their customer service team. I don't want to bore the reader with too many details, but when I tried calling for confirmation of some details I was told to enter my 4- or 6-digit security code. I was flummoxed; I hadn't set a security code. Trying the usual codes I use, I was greeted with a system response that they couldn't find that code and to try again. After the 3rd or 4th iteration their VRU (voice response unit) finally told me I could say "I don't know it", which I did. When I finally got in and connected, their customer service agent said now we're going to set up a security code. I was annoyed that they modified their processes to require a security code without telling their customers. How hard would it have been to include a note in our bills that this change was coming and to be prepared the next time we called customer service? Doesn't anyone think about how these changes will affect their customers before those changes are implemented? Had service with them for a few months. Cell reception was fair, when your data reaches its limit, your speeds is dropped so much its unusable. I closed my account and ported my number out. Unknown to me i has a second "free" line i never used which was not cancelled when i ported out and closed my account. I did not realize this until i received a bill the following month. I called and was told they would put in a case for it. I received another bill the following month for both months plus a late fee. I called again and was told they could remove the late fee. but they could do nothing about the charge for the line that had never been used or connected to a phone at all as i was unaware of until after i cancelled my plan. I have been a satisfied customer for several years but recent experiences with Consumer Cellular have left me unhappy. We wanted to transfer my wife's phone, which was with Republic Wireless, to Consumer Cellular. CC told us that she could keep her phone and phone number. Then, once we had cancelled her Republic plan and added her line to Consumer Cellular, we were told her phone was incompatible and that she would have to buy a new one. This just feels like an underhanded bait-and-switch. If I could give Consumer Cellular a "0" rating, I would. I phoned Consumer Cellular on May 16th, 2025 telling them that I wanted to port my phone number back to AT&T. I no longer wanted Consumer Cellular's service due to the fact that they were higher in monthly payments then AT&T. So all went well, I called AT&T and ported my number back to them. I paid my final bill and then as of yesterday, June 23rd I was SHOCKED to see that Consumer Cellular had taken all but a few dollars out of my paypal account for 2 months of service. I am in my 70's, widowed, raising 3 grandchildren and living off of SSI. I called Consumer Cellular this morning first thing and was told by 2 women that when I phoned on May 16th that it was AT&T's responsibility to call and cancel MY account with Consumer Cellular even though I did that. So yesterday I learned that Consumer Cellular took ALL but a few dollars of my money out of my paypal account. Money in which I was going to go to the store and buy groceries last night, only to learn, I had nothing. So I phoned AT&T Store that has been AWESOME in helping me. I asked them this morning if it was THEIR responsibility to call Consumer Cellular on my behalf telling them I no longer wanted their service and was told, "NO" it was my place, in which I did just that. Well, according to Consumer Cellular today, that when I made that call on May 16th, I was simply asking for a number to port my phone to AT&T......WHERE IS THE COMMAN SENSE IN ALL THIS???? I also told Consumer Cellular that I was switching back to AT&T due to Consumer Cellular's cost. Fast forward to June I dial 611 and Consumer Cellular answers. I was TOTALLY CONFUSSED. So I drove an hour to the AT&T store that is ALWAYS so helpful and professional and they told me that Consumer Cellular NEVER cancelled my account. After talking to these 2 women this morning telling me that it was AT&T'S responsility to cancel my account with them back in May, (even though, I did it myself), and Keith, at AT&T told me that Consumer Cellular never cancelled me. I got home and phoned Consumer Cellular right away. That was the first part of June. They didn't bother cancelling my account till that day.....which I had NO IDEA that, that's what they had done instead of when I first called back on May 16th. So after talking to these 2 women this morning, I got on Consumer Cellular's chat line and asked that person, Brandy P. who's responsibility it was to cancel my account with Consumer Cellular when I switched over to AT&T. Brand P. said, it was MINE......did you read that? NOT AT&T'S. Something I had already done on May 16th. So this morning both via phone call and chat, was told I was still using Consumer Cellular's account. WHAT & WHY......didn't they, CONSUMER CELLULAR do THEIR job and cancel me back on May 16th instead taking almost $100 of my money for 2 months of service that in those 2 months I was with AT&T and paying them for my phone service. I copied the conversation and saved it. At the end, Brandy P. told me they had in fact sent me a bill in an email......REALLY....WHY DIDN'T I GET IT? After learning that, I went to my AOL email and there was NO EMAILS from them with regards to them taking more money from me. Know why, it was in the spam folder. I DON'T check that folder, because if it's SPAM.......THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IT IS.....of NO USE to me. I WOULD NEVER EVER suggest this company. So, after talking to AT&T this morning and having cried for some time knowing I have NO MONEY to buy food, AT&T store told me to contact paypal and tell them what happened. Paypal told me that it's pending and that I would have to wait till the 30th of June which is 7 days away and like everyone else I talked to they would say, "I'm so sorry but I can't help you!" DON'T BE FOOLED BY DECEPTIVE ADVERTISING OF THIS DISHONEST COMPANY!!! They advertise cheap prices on TV and on their web site. NOT TRUE! When I signed up with them, not ONE WORD was said to me about all the extra charges! When I got my bill, which was nearly double what I was led to believe it would be, it was way more than I could afford. So I called and told them to disconnect the cell phone and I would just keep my home phone. They disconnected BOTH phones and left me as an elderly person without any means of communication! My phones were disconnected on 11-2-22. I just checked my credit card bill and there's 2 charges on it - 14.58 charged 11-22-22 and 37.76 charged 11-16-22. Just sharing a recent experience with Consumer Cellular. I have had them for at least 3 years. I thought their customer service was good. I have been having difficulty with my mobile cellular since I moved to Charleston in early September. I ordered an iPhone 11 through them. It did not work well at all. Calls were dropped. I couldn't call out. Unable to do internet searches. Facebook and Instagram apps wouldn't refresh. And other weird stuff. I couldn't figure out if it was the phone or the service. I had the phone for less than a week. Had it in an Otterbox. Never dropped it or anything. I take excellent care of my iPhones. I called them today to find out why they were sending me a package. They told me they found a scratch on the phone and were returning it to me and charging me $480. They told me they would not share documentation of the damage and I had no recourse. I will never again buy a phone from a company that does not have a brick and mortar store. I went to T-MOBILE last week and got an iPhone 14 and mobile service that actually works. T-MOBILE told me Consumer Cellular has terrible customer service, they take forever to port over your number to the new carrier and are just very unprofessional when people terminate service with them. For starters, I had several lines that I switched over to consumer, carrying over with me a number that I have had for close to twenty years since my sister passed away from breast cancer I took possession of her number in memory of her, that was until I came to consumer cellular!!!!. I have been with Metro, Sprint, and T-Mobile carrying this number with me until I came across consumer cellular. I had the number placed on a temporary hold since I was not currently using it, and I've done this before with every other phone carrier usually resulting in my having to pay a small reduced monthly fee. However, consumer cellular decides to get rid of the number from my very existing and active plan. I found out 4 months later when I purchased a new device because I was told that my phones were too old for service and so I would need to upgrade them otherwise consumer cellular would not support them anymore. So it was at that point that I considered purchasing a new device to attach my sisters number to. Although very confused because I have never heard of a company telling you that four year old phones are no longer compatible with their system so you need to upgrade ?? Then imagine how devastated I was to be informed that I no longer had possession of my number because they removed it from my account without informing me afterwards the representative becomes very annoyed with me because I couldn't understand why they weren't able to give me the number back and why I was never notified. The rep caught an attitude because he said I'm not understanding the fact that he's already explained their policy, so in other words, let's move on to something else. (seriously!!!) So I tried calling the number to see if someone would answer and maybe I might be able to negotiate with who ever is the new owner of my sisters number, and maybe they would consider returning the number back to me if I compensated them. But my phone was unable to dial the number. Every time that I dialed it, the phone would immediately hang up without even ringing. I tried calling for months without success . What did they do to my phone that I can't call the number that I once owned? Was consumer cellular hoping that I would not be able to catch on to the fact that they had done this with my sisters number and my phone. There's no way my phone should not have been able to call a number that I was previously in possession of . Apart from this, I also had my insurance protection removed from my existing devices on my account when I was advised to split my 1 account into 2 separate accounts in order to take advantage of extra savings. That totally backfired!!!! Not only did I lose my insurance protection and could not get it back even after speaking with a supervisor who assured me that he would look into it because he seemed that I had protection but that when I split the account into two Separate accounts. It cause the computer to remove the insurance as if I was purchasing new devices. The supervisor explained that he couldn't figure out how to put the insurance back onto my existing phones , but he would call me back after he looked into it, a little more to see how he could resolve the issue . Acknowledging that it was definitely the fault of consumer cellular. Unfortunately, he never called back. Imagine my surprise. When I called back to inquire about whether or not he had conducted his investigation and with what results, I was told that I never had insurance. I was further shocked to hear that no notes had been left on my account, and there were no supervisors' names attached to my account either. Therefore, I never had insurance. What's not on my phone's any of my phones and that I was no longer eligible to have insurance because since I had already owned the phones. It was too late to place insurance on them. Absolutely disgraceful this company. Absolutely. Disgraceful and I am almost positive that I could not possibly be the only one. It is horrible to even consider what type of experiences senior citizens have been through not being able to recover. It's ridiculous. It's absolutely ridiculous. And they ought to be disbar, disband it, and not able to conduct business anymore. Unacceptable their behavior and their actions are unexcusable. And totally unacceptable. Consumer cellular states unlocking a phone from another carrier is easy, but apparently, they choose to not unlock a phone you buy from them for 6 months. I went to make a switch, and even though I paid for my phones, they would not unlock my iphone 14 for a full 6 months. Now I have to return the phones and start over. Bought a Lemon Phone from them in March 2023. Three months in, I wanted to return it, as it did not work properly. If I could give ZERO stars...I would. I've have only been with Consumer Cellular for two months. I use my phone to occasionally check Facebook/email, to order supplies and to text my husband at work. About two-thirds through the first month, I received a text stating I'd "exceeded my 50GB plan", and that service would be reduced. I immediately called customer service (if you can call it "service") and was told that according to their computer I had, indeed, gone over the 50GB. Knowing that was impossible, I decided to reduce my internet time, my texts, and everything; including turning my phone off at night (which I've never had to do before, and being a disabled senior, should not have to, for emergency purposes). This second month, (only half-way through the month), I get the same text message, stating I've exceeded the 50G limit and my service will be reduced. Upon calling again, I get an obnoxious woman who doesn't care to listen to reason, but instead insinuates I am wrong and insists that their computer is correct in showing an overage. Using 50GB of data is the monthly equivalent of 800(+) hours of being online (more hours than are in a month ), or streaming 10,000 songs, or watching 100 hours of standard-definition videos or catching your favorite Netflix series and watching 24/7 for the entire month. It's not very possible for one (or even two) people to be able to use that much data without being on their phones all day long on data-heavy apps. And I'm only on for a daily total of about 3 hours max. Anyway, CC is pure CRAP and I'm happy to be getting away from them. read more

First few years were no issue then after my husband passed, they became horrible. I sent the request to transfer the account to my name and they never received it but said nothing. Then I get an email saying my service was to be suspended in 24 to 48 hours because they didn't receive said paperwork. I emailed it in and called to assure they got it. In a matter of hours, I had to repeat myself a half dozen times, say his death date, his old number, explain why I never canceled his number. It threw me into a grief depression. Then I'm told there are stipulations transferring to my name. I lost it. I said I was leaving. On 2/22/24, I received an email saying my phone has been canceled per my request and it was done in seconds with no prior email to time. I hadn't received a new Sim card from the other company yet. Now I'm hour 18 of porting my number and can't call the company. I am livid. This is the worst customer service EVER. IF you regularly use Apple iOS's "Find My" app, do NOT sign up with Consumer Cellular. We are elderly but active and use the app to increase our personal and bike/vehicle safety - using "Find Me" for devices and AirTags. Consumer Cellular canNOT consistently track either devices or AirTags even in just near real time - say 20 minutes. Hubby had a bike accident when we were with Verizon - we knew EXACTLY where he was immediately. With Consumer Cellular we cannot tell if the non-moving device/AirTag is a sign of a problem for 45 minutes or more. (And that despite restarting the searching device, or its network settings, or any other suggested "fix.") read more

Buyers beware! Do NOT listen to AARP about this company! If I could give it a ZERO I would! This company is VERY unfriendly and will NOT return a phone you purchased within the 30 days they give you. They will LIE and state your phone is damaged so you are stuck with a new phone. They ignore their customers and treat them as they are crooks! Been with the company for 15 years and tried to return a phone. They lied and said it was damaged so they would. It have to refund my money! Go elsewhere! Save yourself a big headache! BY FAR THE WORST COMPANY YOU CAN SIGN UP WITH. Save yourself and your loved ones the headache. They will give you a phone and lock you in and then not offer any of the warranty that they promise!!!! I paid for the most expensive data plan for almost a year and constantly couldn't connect unless with wifi. Customer support told me I was within the warranty period, but then said I don't qualify because of a scratch on my screen. It's not the scratch that's not giving me service it's Consumer Cellular. They create a fake facade with their "quality" customer service, but when you run into ANY problems they're of no help! Please. Heed my advice and tell your family and loved ones to not fall for their low prices; as they'll get the cheap and non working service associated with it!!! I was a loyal customer for a year paid for the most expensive data plan and only rarely would get service. They do not have any headquarters. They operate from inside other shops. Without a legal address, nothing they do or say is responsible, nor are promises, guarantees, etc. Only 1 reason to give up headquarters--to avoid accountability. When it came to receiving a refund, it took 6 weeks. When it comes to starting service, payment is in advance. Have used them twice, each unsatisfactory. read more

"Bazillions of Gigabytes" ain't happening. I've been a Consumer Cellular customer for nearly a decade, and have recommended it to all my friends. Until recently, my only complaint was when they started charging for paper bills without any notification. But now I have a serious complaint, and it follows a pattern reported by others. Recently I was sent out of town on assignment to a location where Wi-Fi was not available. But because CS automatically upgrade customers to "unlimited" data, I wasn't worried. However, when I got to 50GB, CS cut me off, cold turkey. NO data at all. Zilch. Upon contacting Customer Service, the agent told me I'd exceeded 50GB, and would NOT be able to have data restored until the next billing cycle -- 3 weeks away. They acted as though I was looney to expect "unlimited" data, though that's precisely what their advertising claims. Agents assured me there was NO WAY to restore my data -- even if I opened a new account. I would have to make do with ZERO data for 3 weeks in a remote location where data was essential to communicate with my head office. I protested, and after three hours of talking to several agents, was able to have my data restored -- at a throttled rate. The throttled data worked for about 20 minutes before I was completely cut off again. Over the next ten days, I spent no less than 25 hours on the phone with customer service, making at least 60 individual calls. It became a pattern that at each occurrence I had to wait in the queue, talk to multiple agents, and was eventually allowed to use throttled data. But that data was always terminated without notice after less than one hour of use. So, back to the phone and repeat. After 10 days of this, my throttled data remained on for the remainder of the billing cycle. With the new month, my data was returned to normal speed Giving Consumer Cellular the benefit of the doubt, I'm guessing CS's computer and their advertising department are not talking to each other. Bottom line: CS's "Unlimited" (Bazillions of Gigabytes) of data is limited to 50GB and then you are shut off. Dave read more
