"Bazillions of Gigabytes" ain't happening. I've been a Consumer Cellular customer for nearly a decade, and have recommended it to all my friends. Until recently, my only complaint was when they started charging for paper bills without any notification. But now I have a serious complaint, and it follows a pattern reported by others. Recently I was sent out of town on assignment to a location where Wi-Fi was not available. But because CS automatically upgrade customers to "unlimited" data, I wasn't worried. However, when I got to 50GB, CS cut me off, cold turkey. NO data at all. Zilch. Upon contacting Customer Service, the agent told me I'd exceeded 50GB, and would NOT be able to have data restored until the next billing cycle -- 3 weeks away. They acted as though I was looney to expect "unlimited" data, though that's precisely what their advertising claims. Agents assured me there was NO WAY to restore my data -- even if I opened a new account. I would have to make do with ZERO data for 3 weeks in a remote location where data was essential to communicate with my head office. I protested, and after three hours of talking to several agents, was able to have my data restored -- at a throttled rate. The throttled data worked for about 20 minutes before I was completely cut off again. Over the next ten days, I spent no less than 25 hours on the phone with customer service, making at least 60 individual calls. It became a pattern that at each occurrence I had to wait in the queue, talk to multiple agents, and was eventually allowed to use throttled data. But that data was always terminated without notice after less than one hour of use. So, back to the phone and repeat. After 10 days of this, my throttled data remained on for the remainder of the billing cycle. With the new month, my data was returned to normal speed Giving Consumer Cellular the benefit of the doubt, I'm guessing CS's computer and their advertising department are not talking to each other. They would zero out the last bill bc they researched it hadn't been used in 5 months by elderly with dementia. Then I saw July 25 another $21.75 was auto deducted off of my bank account when I was told that there would be no further charges on July 23. Consumer cellular scams senior citizens. My 87 year old mom got a certified pre owned phone from them. Didn't like it, barely used it and returned it within the 30 day free return policy. Consumer cellular wouldn't accept it saying that the phone was too scratched to resell. There are no scratches on the phone that are visible. I've included two pictures of the phone to show that there are no scratches. My mom ended up buying the phone outright because Consumer Cellular refused to accept it, refused to believe that if there are scratches they weren't there prior to my mom receiving the phone, and kept telling us we got the phone new when we had proof we didn't. The following week I noticed it was strange that I hadn't received any phone calls. I went to make a call and found my phone had no network and could not make phone calls out or receive calls. CC is a retailer for the wholesaler of AT&T service. And AT&T service is awful with poor coverage, and dropped calls. I switched from CC to Mint Mobile which uses T-MOBILE as the wholesaler cellphone service. Consumer Reports magazine and consumer advocate, Clark Howard got it wrong on this one. I activated my Consumer Cellular plan just over three weeks ago and I am already giving them the boot. I was well aware that "unlimited data" was a deliberate misnomer and that throttling would take place after a paltry 35 gigabytes of (shared) standard data was used up. To try and placate my concern, a representative of Consumer Cellular told me that although I would not be able to successfully stream video after having my data speed throttled down I would easily be able to perform other, less data dependent tasks on the Internet without any difficulty. This was completely untrue. Once throttled, my data speed plummeted to 0.07 Mbps. For those old enough to remember dial-up speeds, the Consumer Cellular throttle-down network speed is slower than obsolete dial-up. It essentially provides the customer who paid for "unlimited" data with useless data. Imagine paying for an unlimited soft drink refills and being provided with a clogged soda straw in an effort to consume the allegedly endless beverage. I became even more irate when none of the Consumer Cellular support representatives would disclose the actual speed of the throttled data. They all behaved liked slimy politicians, unable to provide me with a straight answer to my relevant question. Consumer Cellular's punitive speed damper makes it practically impossible to accomplish anything on the Internet. The speed was so inadequate, I could not log in to my Consumer Cellular online account and engage in a chat session to communicate with one of Consumer Cellular's chat representatives. If a good throttling is in order, it should be swiftly administered to Consumer Cellular and their duplicitous trade practices. Consumer Cellular's so-called "award winning" customer service is also hit or miss. I have received a disconcerting amount of contradictory and misinformation from several of Consumer Cellular's purportedly stellar customer service agents. I would never recommend Consumer Cellular to anyone needing more than a few gigabytes worth of data per month. Even at that, there are better values in cellular service than Consumer Cellular. We were with our last cellular company for 9 years until a sales clerk in our local store lied to me in an effort to sell me a new phone, which I refused to buy, what I did do was go to consumer cellular and sign up On tv c.s says you can save 1/2 by switching which in our case was not true. we were paying about $185, now we are paying about $45 for the same plan we previously had, . C.S. service and phones have been trouble free, not one problem. We have called customer service a couple of times for some questions and have found that they c.s. reps to be better than the service that you get from most companies. Unlike our cable company who braggs about their global customer service which is about 5% effective, I can't understand their english and most times they don't have the correct answer. so we appreciate english speaking representatives who know and understand their product. I switched to Consumer Cellular in January. Having issues with my phone service. Could receive or make calls. She reset my network setting and told me I was required to setup a new voicemail. She said to do it while she was online. My voicemail was working perfectly but it was "required ". I was not told it would erase all my voicemails. I changed from high dollar AT&T to Consumer Cellular (hereinafter called CC) a couple years ago. I love CC's pricing and the fact they automatically change my plan upwards if I exceed my data allotment - without selling me each additional gig of data for the outrageous $15 per gig as AT&T did. And yet I can still be on the AT&T network using CC, which is very good coverage nationwide. When choosing CC as your carrier, be sure to request the AT&T network and decline the T-Mobile network - both are available. I've been on both and AT&T is by far my preference. I travel by motorhome a lot of miles each year, and T-Mobile is all too often just a 3G network - at least that was my experience. As a new customer, CC's customer service was outstanding. I could call and be promptly answered and helped - but that didn't last long. CC is no different than many if not most companies - the very last thing they want to do is talk to their customers! They make it very clear that customers should try any of several links to read for yourself how to answer your question or fix your problem. If you persevere and actually call them, there will very likely be a long wait 'til you reach a live person. Recently I called a bit after 7:00 A.M. and after about a 10 minute wait reached a human. I wished to change from the T-Mobile sim card to the AT&T sim card. After another 10 minute wait, I was told they couldn't send the sim card I wanted, but would have to go to a Target store to get one. I knew better than that, as I'd done the same with an older phone over a year earlier. So I informed the "customer service" rep that if they wouldn't send the sim card, I'd find another carrier. After another 10 minute or so "hold", she came back and advised I'd receive the AT&T sim card within five days. That experience showed me, and I'm convinced I'm right, that CC simply didn't want the bother of mailing the sim card, and sending me to some crowded store would cost them nothing. I think such a corporate policy is shameful - especially for a company that boasts as loudly as CC does about it's "excellent" customer service. But after all is said and done, CC pricing is much less than the big carriers, so I put up with them. CC sure beats the high prices of the big carriers! read more

I've been a customer of Consumer Cellular for 12 years. Just as I suspected they have grown and no longer provide "personal service". The agents couldn't care less. Last week, I received a disconnect notice because my echeck had been returned from my bank. I have been in the process of switching banks and I forgot to transfer my CC account to my new bank. I quickly paid my bill with the correct bank account. They had also added a service fee of 20$ to my account. Mind you, I haven't been late paying a bill for several years, it's on autopay. After speaking to a rep, she was no help at all and would not listen to my complaint. She txfrd me to a supervisor who was no better. She did not address my concerns regarding being a long time customer. She kept repeating that she had reversed the service charge. I told her that I was calling about my length of service and she kept changing the subject. I finally hung up and I'm still deciding whether I should get another carrier. I've been their customer for about 5 years now and while they have a lot good going for them ( simplified, streamlined packages and service ) they will not honor their 30 day trial if they can find a way out of it. On November 16th I ordered a replacement/upgrade phone. It took 2 weeks to get into my hands thanks to delays in delivery and my local post office losing the package in the back. ( identifying numbers came off the box ) While this isn't Consumer Cellular's fault, I need them to understand I've only had this phone in my hand for 2.5 weeks. This phone has been nothing but frustrating and I want to swap with another phone. Their firm response was that I ordered it on 11/16 therefore the last day they would honor their 30-day eval was 12/16. So they include shipping time into that 30 days? It was a week to get to my post office and another week before it got to me. That's not my fault but they hold me accountable for it? UNETHICAL. I've been happy with them until now but am ready to stop service over an issue like this. DO NOT GO WITH CONSUMER CELLULAR. They will not honor their agreements nor let you speak to a supervisor nor anyone else who could evaluate a situation for flexibility. I just added an Iris flip phone. What a piece of garbage! C.C. doesn't have a clue! People who want flip phones only want a phone. They are not old, stupid or ignorant. I never use this small phone (a DORO 7050 model), but just carry it w/me in the event I need it in an emergency. Today I cancelled my Consumer Cellular account after talking to one of their their customer service reps via my home land-line. I have had a major problem w/this phone since first receiving it. Namely, that when the phone is closed (folded over on itself) it automatically turns on (uncommanded). This is because the phone's 'ON/OFF' switch actuates itself if the phone's case has any pressure put on it while in the pocket. In my case, I carry my phone in a side pant-pocket and it is often subject to slight pressure when I am sitting, unbeknownst to me. Thus, the phone turns on without my knowledge and the battery eventually goes flat (again, without my knowledge). Clearly, a phone should NOT turn itself on unintentionally because of any pressure applied to the outside of the phone's case. This problem is caused by what is known in the tech world as a MAJOR DESIGN FLAW. Consumer Cellular should not be selling this phone for use by customers with this kind of a serious fault engineered into the design. The DORO 7050 model is manufactured in China and it is a basic entry level cellular phone with minimal cellular functions, but on the basis of this experience I judge it to be completely useless. Today, after finding my phone 'ON' again, it was unresponsive to my efforts to turn it off, using the designated 'OFF' button. Furthermore, it would not respond to any of the buttons on the user keyboard/interface whatsoever to carry out that 'OFF' function. Since I do not use this phone with any regularity, this is obviously a major engineering oversight. Had I needed it in an emergency, I would have been, as we say delicately in the PC world, "SOL." After I informed the service rep of my problem, I told her I need a replacement phone, since the phone is obviously defective (through no action on my part). I was then informed that since I did not have an optional consumer 'Protection' policy on the phone, I was indeed 'SOL'! Therefore, "Did I wish to purchase another phone from Consumer Cellular to replace my defective DORO 7050?" My answer was a profound NO and I told the rep to cancel my Cellular One account immediately, which she did. That leaves me with a VERY reliable, but too large APPLE 8+ iPhone that I am now going to have to lug around with me, like it or not. Consumer Cellular makes a huge marketing effort to reassure its customers that it is 'simple', easy to use, 'user friendly' and reliable. This has definitely NOT been my experience (but solely due to faulty equipment) and I've been using cellular communication systems without a similar problem for years! If possible, I would leave a MINUS-1 STAR rating for Consumer Cellular, but it's just sad to think that that company pays so little attention to problems like this that involve MAJOR DESIGN FLAWS in its consumer products. I'd been having very poor service, so I called to see what was up, and in trying to fix the issue, the rep turned off my ability to make phone calls. This wasn't resolved until a few days later after I called from a borrowed phone to see what had happened. Also, they've reissued me 2 new SIM cards, and both times they made an error in the shipping address (they wrote the wrong name) so the SIM card got sent back to them. I needed the SIM cards asap, but they said they weren't able to expedite the shipping to me, even though the error was their fault. I am a long time Consumer Cell customer. I only use about 20 minutes a month and I get no reception from my home. I called today to ask about about G5 flip to phones which they are not selling yet. I discussed that I got no home reception and never have. The rep suggested that I temporarily try an AT&T card and that I could go back to my Tmobile Sim if there was no change, at no charge. I agreed and then got an email that my old account had been closed and my new account would cost $5.00 a month more. I immediately called and had a CHAT with a manager for close to an hour, and was told that I could not revert to my original plan and was told that with the new account I'd have to get email bills if I wanted to pay online, as I always do... and for that 'privilege I would have to pay $5.00 a month more. If they snail mailed me my bill, I could only pay by mail, credit card or check. Since we travel, this was totally unsatisfactory. Since this plan change was never mentioned by the first rep that I spoke to, I felt that I was being, pardon my French... screwed. This service is not good. I use very little wifi outside of my home, but I got useage overage alerts, so I turned it off. I finally cancelled and now they are trying to charge me for the last month which is fine. I understand that, but they are trying to charge me over $14 for a half of a day, which they cut off in the middle of a call to get my new service connected. I was told when I called to cancel (on January 24th), I would only be charged for the last month. They are also saying the account is past due, which it is not. The last month isn't supposed to go through until January 28th. They also do not have very nice people and are not available for support many of times they say. read more

I was a new customer with Consumer Cellular (CC). We received the cell phones today, late. When my wife saw Iphone 11, she was not satisfied. We only opened the boxes, we did not use them. I called CC and asked if I could exchange the Iphone 15 for the Iphone 15 Pro Max and pay the higher cost. I was initially told yes, then no. I needed to pay $1100 up front, contrary to their advertisement (attached) I talked to a manager and she said that they would not let ANY customer have more than 2 phones. I offer ed to send the new phone back and wait to exchange the phones. I was transferred to a manager, Celest. She came on the line explaining issues of a problem not related to me. I had to tell her what the issue were. She was disagreeable. Again, I offered to wait for the existing phone to be received and inspected. She was curt and told me no. After discussion, she said the on line advertising was not true and I had to pay the $1100 up front. She eventually closed my account and said she would send me a return label for the phones. Never would I recommend Consumer Cellular. I had the phone I bought from them for less than 2 weeks and really only used in for a couple of days. I cancelled my service and sent the phone back. Consumer Cellular refused to take the phone back and to reimburse me $768.00 because they said the display was scratched. They said they took pictures of the scratched display and I asked them for the pictures because the phone is in perfect condition. They have not sent the pictures even after talking to a supervisor. This is the worse company I have ever worked with. I am now out $768.00 and if I try to sell the phone through someone on the internet, they only offered me $215.00. Awful. Totally bogus. Left AT&T for Consumer Cellular's Unlimited Data Plan for 2 i-phone 11's. Consumer Cellular's Unlimited Data Plan is a total lie. After 18 days of the first month data speed slowed to an unusable speed. Speed was reduced to almost nothing after 46 GB. We never used more than 9 GB with AT&T in any month. No idea how we ever got anywhere near 46 GB in less than 20 days, in the first month . Then the reduced speed is useless. Unlimited means unlimited, except with Consumer Cellular. I agree with much of what I've read here. This service is beyond terrible. The wait times for CS are obscene and I was told by a superior CS person they're aware of the problem and are working to do better. Really? That's just a bunch of placating with platitudes. Meaningless palaver. I first received a SIM card that for my iPhone 6s that didn't provide a visual log of the voicemails received so I had no way of knowing whether or not a missed call left a voicemail. Then, after going through the horrific wait times I was put in touch with the superior CS agent who tried some things then gave up and sent another SIM card that I installed only to find it still didn't work with my phone. I don't know how they think they can run a business like this. Apparently, they are banking on their price point to cleave customers from the big carriers (remember, they are 'leasing' the big dogs' towers, etc.) who charge twice the price. Their website is less than useless and poorly designed and you have to carve out hours in your day if you hope to reach anyone at CS. Forget it. Avoid this service and look elsewhere. Everything about this service is cumbersome, clunky, time-consuming and unreliable. It's like they think their customers are all incapacitated in the retirement home and don't mind a LOT of inconvenience and a marginally useful service. read more

Absolutely the most horrible customer service! Tried to deal with these individuals in regards to issues with the phone for a 90-year-old woman. They market themselves to senior citizens and turn their backs on them once they have your money. Calling in they're arrogant and are less than cooperative. Try to speak to management and they're just as bad. Spent an entire day doing their job because of failure on the part of their employees. Looking to have my bill adjusted and they say they'll give me two dollars back. That's customer service .....I don't think so!! We had nothing but issues with the phone ,if the chip in the phone does not match the service that you have. I have spent 5 plus hours communicating with Consumer Cellular customer service over the past 4 days because my 97 year old father's phone line was not working. He was unable to call out or receive calls. This was unacceptable for a home bound senior but i could not get any help resolving this issue. Troubleshooting was useless, tech support would take 48-72 hours. It was finally called an ATT outage although ATT told us they had no outages in his area. We decided to leave CC today and can't wait to be done with this experience. Save your blood pressure, don't get involved with this company. read more

My phone broke I call customer service and was on hold for over 1 hour. No one picked up! I tried to contact them via internet I put my phone number in that I have with them. It came back invalid number. They claim they has great service all I got was the run around. We've been contacted and asked to return to Consumer Cellular. All has been made right. Apparently the individuals that we spoke with were not representing the company as expected. When enough customers complained and cancelled their accounts, the upper management felt they needed to get involved. We are thankful. We appreciate accountability and the fact that they took the time to have a calm, respectful conversation with us. Our history with them proved our loyalty and we were not only thanked for our long standing loyalty, but we were also told many times that they were sorry for the way we were treated.
