From what I am reading in other posts...I am not alone. Having the same issues as others. My phone is my lifeline to the outside world. It would seem that the company could post a message on their website addressing the fact that they have an issue. My account is also showing a "Pay immediately" notice...This is incorrect. Just thought I would share our experience with Consumer cellular after being with Consumer Cellular for almost 6 years. While we had service with CC, we had little complaints for their service and responsiveness to our questions. Because they use ATT and T-Mobile towers, we found that, at our home location, the T Mobile service was better than the ATT service and they suggested and provided us with the necessary SIM cards to get the access improved. Our only issues with their service started when we chose to switch over to another cellular carrier around the first week of November 2020. The technical support staff provided us with invalid port numbers and pin codes that did not allow our telephone numbers to port over to the new carrier. A whole day of calling and inquiring with technical support was required to finally get the phone numbers ported to the new carrier. Our final incident was just discovered in February 2021 after reconciling our credit card accounts to find that Consumer Cellular has been billing us for active service for the last three months for one of the four telephone numbers that were ported to the new carrier. We were using the autopay service with our credit card and the charges continued to go unnoticed until now. We reported the issue to Customer Service and told them that we can show, that the number they thought was still active, is active on the new carrier and that they should be able to see that no data usage nor phone calls have been made on the telephone number at Consumer Cellular. We are awaiting reimbursement for the invalid service charges at this time. Bottom line is they do not make it simple to change to a new carrier without a bunch of time, effort and cost. We would have liked to have given a good review at the end of our service relationship with them but these last incidences really out did all of the good will they previously instilled with us. read more

Wow I hate these guys I contacted them to switch to Verizon a couple of weeks ago, and waited for the sim card to come to install in my phone. It seemed to go well, and my phone looks like it's working - I have internet, the camera all my apps work okay. Except it took a couple of days to figure out that I could not make or receive calls. Incoming calls went directly to voicemail - except not---- no callback number and no message. This morning I am trying to get onto their chat but clicking on the chat button is like clicking on a picture of a flower or something. Nothing, I mean nothing, happens. I am having to go to Verizon or T-Mobile or something when they open at noon to switch away from them. There is nothing they can do at this point to make it better. And I wish I hadn't dropped the landline, because there is just no way to reach them now. read more

I have purchased a phone from Consumer Cellular. Today I paid off the balance on the phone. They refused to provide me an unlock code or give me a timeline to provide it. They told me to keep calling back to check with them, and blamed the problem on Apple. They have made false advertising claims about the carrier they used and about the ease of discontinuing service. They seem to prey on the elderly (their target customer base) and assume the customers have no technical knowledge. Pathetic. read more

Customer Review - Be Advised Anyone Looking to Sign-Up with CC: My wife and I became customers with Consumer Cellular in January, and it's come with a set of problems we never experienced while with T-Mobile or AT&T. We purchased two new devices with Consumer Cellular at our local Target and signed up for monthly Apple Care plans for our respective devices. After several months, my wife's phone was damaged and needed repairs. We come to find out that, for one reason or another, Consumer Cellular only put Apple Care on my phone, but not hers. This led to us having to decide between paying the out-of-pocket expenses to repair at an Apple Store or buy a new phone [which turned out to be the cheaper option]. After speaking with Consumer Cellular representatives on the phone, they indicated it was an error by the employee working the cell phone kiosk at Target. When we spoke to the employee at Target, she insisted it must have been a program error on the part of Consumer Cellular. Sufficed to say, there was not a resolution to this issue beyond everyone else pointing fingers at each other. We paid for a second phone for my wife and said we wanted to ensure Apple Care was on her phone. After trying to get it on the phone at the Target store, the representative said to call up Consumer Cellular because she was unable to add it. I called up CC to verify that Apple Care was on the phone, and I had an affirmative response from the representative that it was indeed on this second phone. Well, I checked our bill today - Apple Care was STILL not added to my wife's phone. When I called today to get it on the phone as only 16 days has passed between the time of purchase and today, the Consumer Cellular rep said she couldn't add it but instead could do a Square Trade protection plan. Rather than $3.50 a month for Apple Care, the Square Trade plan now costs $5 a month. I realize $1.50 extra a month is not the end of the world, but to say we are disappointed by this turn of events would be an understatement. We went with Consumer Cellular to save money on cell phone plans, not deal with headaches or extra charges because nobody can give us a straight answer why they could not add Apple Care at the time of purchase or even within the timeframe window of one month. To sum up, a couple warnings: 1. The people selling the phones at Target do not actually work for Target, they are from some sort of subcontracted company. However, even the managers of Target don't know what company it is. It is rather shady that a third party can sell expensive devices on behalf of other companies at Target and seemingly answer to no one - not the Target managerial staff, not even Consumer Cellular itself. If these people are selling products in the name of this company and they are committing serious and costly errors, Consumer Cellular needs to recognize this and address it. 2. Even though we verified over the phone with CC that Apple Care was on my wife's phone, it still was not there even after verbal confirmation and led to us having to pay more for this protection plan because someone could not do it right in the first place. Why is this so complicated? Even after you pay your phone, verify it several times, be it online, in person, etc., but don't expect to get an answer as to why. 3. Finally, we wanted to give CC a second chance and see if they could address the costly mistake they made. Even after this second chance, they did not pass the test with flying colors. This is very disappointing, and we will investigate alternative companies unless CC attempts to remedy this situation. I have never had an account with a company where you pay the same amount year after year AND get more service! They keep adding on benefits for the same low price! We have never had any issues with Consumer Cellular, thus the high rating. It's so much cheaper than AT&T, our previous carrier. We switched in 2014, moved across the country and our service has remained perfect. Keep up the good work. read more

Perhaps you've seen my review of Consumer Cellular on other web sites. I plan to post it on every site that allows it. My mission is make sure the world knows what kind of company Consumer Cellular is. Lied to me. Told me phone I ordered would ship right away and would work as soon as I "Set it up." That was the phrase chat representative used. "Set it up." To Consumer Cellular, set it up means follow these steps: 1. Receive phone. Yeah, it did arrive in a couple days as representative promised. 2. Look for charger. 3. Come to realization that no charger is included in the package. 4. Go to Samsung Customer Service web site. (Couldn't call - Had no phone.) 5. Get told charger is not included in package. Must be ordered separately. 6. Order charger. Pay fee, even though you already paid $250 for phone. 7. Wait a week for charger to get delivered. There might be more to "Set it up." I don't know because I have to wait several more days for charger. I'm sure if I talked to someone from Consumer Cellular, he would say, "Did the representative tell you a charger was included?" Me: "No. Didn't think to ask." Consumer Cellular: "Well there ya go, boy. You ain't got no reason to complain." In my book, the Consumer Cellular representative told a blatant lie. "All ya gotta do is set it up." If nothing else, he could have warned me no charger was included. I wouldn't have liked it, but at least I could have ordered it at same time as phone and gotten it sooner. Obviously, he was afraid I wouldn't order the product if he explained what "Set it up" means. Consumer Cellular is a slimy, dishonest company. This company used to be good but, they have grown to fast and now are not able to handle their customer support activities. To call them and speak to an agent you will wait for as long as 2 hours. To chat with them likewise, the waits are greater then 1 hour. I think they are hiring lots of staff and as a result, you will not be able to get a skilled agent most of the time. You will almost always have to ask for a supervisor and that's another 1-2 hour wait. When the service is up and running it works very well. read more

It took over 2 months to switch my landline number to Consumer Cellular's home phone base. During that entire time I was billed for a service I did not have yet AND while trying to figure out why the transfer wasn't working, they deactivated my cell phone so I was without phone service for 2 weeks. During the last call to them I was assured that all the charges would be credited on my next bill and they told me it would only be about $15. Just received the bill, it was $34 and I was only given an $11 credit. I spent at least 20 hours of my time on the phone with them re: the problem with the transfer and requesting credit for the charges for the service I did not have. It caused a lot of stress and wasted so much of my time and I had to actually pay extra for that!!!! Now re: the landline/home base. Do not even consider doing this because you no longer will have caller ID, we cannot set up the voice mail and our answering machine no longer works, the sound quality is poor and the volume is much lower than that of our cell phones and now, more and more often when people call, there is a loud beeping and I have to hang up and call that person back or ask them to do the same. read more

My experience seems to be different from some other reviewers. CC does everything my previous long-time provider did at less that half the cost. They make it super easy to set up an account and make the switch even when you choose to keep your existing phones and numbers. AARP members also receive additional savings on plans. And the best is this. They have the most excellent customer service repps I have ever experienced with a company of this size. Yes, I've had a wonderful experience with Consumer Cellular! read more

We got this service for our Dad (76) after his stroke. We also got a phone for his wife, who is also in her 70s, too. We wanted a phone with larger keys, brightly colored, easy elder operation, visually appealing, and cheaper billing. What we got was a service with a questionable billing practice. We did not know we were being billed for 20 days as a monthly billing cycle. Once we asked the important questions, we got flaky answers. We canceled the service & went with a regular popular carrier. There are better options. Ask the important questions. I do not recommend. read more

When I was having coverage problems with BOOST while driving truck through east Washington to Missoula MT, my reception dropped off. So I went to Consumer Cellular with the hopes of getting better service until I was talking with a customer service rep where she was looking at her computer screen and asking me for the zip codes where I would be traveling through. I informed her that I had no idea of what they were, she responded that she is unable to assist me with my request until I gave her the zip codes. Consumer Cellular = terrible. Run away. Just don't do it. Their customer service is the worst: 20 minute hold times to get customer service reps that can't or won't help you resolve any issues. Their coverage is terrible. Their data is artificially throttled on AT&T's network - you can put an AT&T phone beside a Consumer Cellular phone and the AT&T phone will be 10x faster. The 3 stars is for Christine, who was helpful and nice. After 2 male representatives( one of them named Dylan), she explained to me about why my cellphone cannot make and receive phone calls and texts. She was patient with me, and offering options that I never knew for she knew I couldn't be without my cellphone. Thankfully, I could do Internet because I pay the data. Great prices especially if you don't need a lot of frills. However you sacrifice support. If you are bringing your old phone be careful. The imei checker on the website is not accurate. It said my phone(which worked on the carrier they lease towers from) should be fine, after transitioning, text was fine, but no voice calls. Their answer for any problems is to buy a new smartphone from them. Fortunately An old smart phone worked(I had to tweak settings on my own), my nice newer phone did not. They have no list for which phones variants actually work, there can be many variations within a specific model number. read more

They don't provide enough information to help us figure out why we keep running over the data allowance. But who does? First, they send us an email last month saying that they won't be supporting the 3g network will be switching to 4g and 5g, and because of this, my parents iphone 5s won't be supported and we have 6 weeks to buy a brand new phone or our service is discontinuted. The problem is the iphone 5S DOES support 4g. This begs the question, is there something I'm missing that I haven't been able to get addressed speaking two 2 customer service agents so far or did they really send out a blanket letter to the wrong customers, hoping to get unknowing old people to crack out more money on upgrades. Anyways since I had an older but newer model phone, I figure since I've already started this process I may as well just get a sim card and give my folks the newer phone. Well, I call consumer cellular, and after a week a new SIM card arrives, attached to a NEW LINE THAT I DID NOT ORDER and in order to resolve this situation. Without any consent, without any clarification. They activate a new line on my phone bill. And I'll have to get in touch with the supervisor, who will take up to 72 hours to call me back, in order to get these issues resolved. I am currently 48 hours in and waiting for this company to escalate my ticket to the supervisor. We are at a point where it's worth it to even continue or services here or move elsewhere because this company is at best, purely incompetent, or at the worst, preying on the elderly. read more

I have been a happy customer with CC for over 20 years. They have been very customer oriented....till now!!!! First they sold me a data point device a couple of years ago for 100 dollars now they say I can no longer use it ....did not offer to pay back for the device. Next and most important they shut down my voice fowarding service last month. They did that without telling me!!!! Messages from doctors friends and business were all lost and unanswered.!!!! I call service and was told they never offered the service, I responded I had it for over 20 years, they responded they do not offer it anymore. Normally I would give a 4 or 5 Star rating, but I just learned that instead of using AT&T towers that my phones SIMS card uses TMobile towers. My wife's phone which is on the same plan as mine uses AT&T towers, which now explains why her phone would often have service while traveling when mine would not. My phone is not working today (hers is) because as I was told by a CC technician that TMobile is doing a system upgrade that will take from 2-24 hours. How's that for a range?? I was told that I can get an AT&T SIMS card at Target or another CC vendor which I plan to do immediately. So, the ads and reviews that state that CC uses AT&T towers are not accurate. I agree with all of those who have posted negative comments. I always liked these guys, But not anymore. When they send you a phone, the vast amount of paperwork includes a card telling you that there are two ways to activate your phone. You can call them and wait on rot, or go online. The kicker is, if you go online, they ask for an activation code. Where do you get the code? After vast research I learned you get the code from the box your phone came in. Wasn't there. I called, and after a long time on rot, was told "oh we don't provide the code for orders shipped. You have to call in" I asked to talk to a supervisor. That's not possible they said. Their management is apparently shielded from the public. I was livid. It's very very poor customer service. The employee did activate my phone. Then, I asked if I could schedule a call back from a supervisor. The rep "put in the request", and said I should hear back in 24 hours. Surprise, no call back. I am sure the rep just pretended to arrange the call back, and trashed my request. I agree with others who have been amazed this company gets customer service accolades, because they are the epitome of customer no service. Do not buy from this company!!!!! When I have time. We have had so much trouble with this company. I purchased a new phone for my dad at Christmas and it stopped working in early February. They sent us two refurbished phones that never worked properly. My dad is 91 years old and I called CC no less than 25 times for help. We eventually canceled the service. They made it very difficult to switch andanthey made it very difficult to switch to another carrier. I paid our bill in full, the amount that I was given at the time of cancellation. I then received an email from them that our account was past due. I called them and their guy said we owe them 7 cents. He also refused to speak with me until my 91 year old dad was on the phone to say it was OK. I love their prices but unbelievable "customer service I" i(i use the term loosely )(this is the second time I've had a crazy experience with this company in the customer service department regarding a Sim card!! last time they said that my Sim card was faulty and that was my problem with my phone after going on and on for 45 minutes Of arguing with me they came to the realization that it wasn't the card at all and the tech support woman admitted I was right it was NOT MY SIM CARD , before she kept insisting I had to go into a target store and buy another Sim card ! Activated the phone last night it was working great all day except I kept getting texts from some weird people and when I blocked them more weird people would text me hmmm strange. 5 o'clock this evening I tried to call my friend when her text kept saying it wasn't delivered I realize that my phone was not working I couldn't call out so I chatted with consumer cellular and they informed me that they had put the wrong Sim card in my phone with someone else's phone number when they realized this this afternoon they just shut my phone off without telling me no email no nothing just shut my phone and text off .then sent me a new Sim card that they told me will take four days to get here yes that's right not only that they said there was nothing they could do about it and if I wanted another Sim card I would have to go to the nearest target and buy it BUY it not free pay for it!!!! She DID admit it's their fault but they said that's all they can do !!! I asked why didnt Least let me know they were going to shut my phone off before they did it And why couldn't they have overnighted me the Sim card Your answer was "this is all we can do" WHAT!!! unbelievable I'm so floored the woman on the chat claimed be a supervisor and refused to give me another supervisor I explained that my vehicle was in transport right now I just moved and that the nearest target is an hour away they don't care they said sorry that is all we can do Then told me I could either call back yeah right call on white or open a new chat if I wanted to talk to someone else So I did and it said chat unavailable this is like a movie right !!!??? RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM THIS COMPANY!!! Here's the short story:  Yesterday (4/21/2021) I went to a T Mobile store to have my number transferred from Consumer Cellular to T Mobile. The deals and plans are far superior to Consumer Cellular. Five and one half hours, plus three phone calls to Consumer Cellular Custom Service, finally produced an ability for T Mobile to access my account.  There's 5.5 hours of my life that I will never get back. NOW, today, my phone number still hasn't ported. The PIN that was provided to me by Consumer Cellular did not work on three occasions. They actually said that T Mobile probably put the number in BACKWARD. Two more hours of being transferred and placed on hold numerous times has yet to produce the transfer of my phone number. For seniors, T Mobile has a great plan and you don't have to belong to AARP to get it. Consumer Cellular should replace the name of their Customer Service Department with "Customer Department" as the service is less than stellar .... OH, and did I mention that everyone without fail at Consumer Cellular is "very sorry for your inconvenience" but has yet failed to fix the "inconvenience." read more

Cheaper...just as good. Not for me. My phone was identified to them when I signed up over the phone. I went to Target 6 times, no one was at their kiosk.. Then on the 7 visit the person that waited on me knew nothing about the plans. She suggested I call them. UNBELIEVABLE. I should have stopped it at that point. After paying for the plan for 2 month, only 2 bars, no signal even with my WiFi I was told I needed a new phone as mine was not compatible with theirs. So, I purchased a new phone at $600 and they stated I needed an AT&T SIM card. Today I opened the phone and called Consumer Cellular to find that they DID NOT include the proper SIM card. I asked for it to be overnighted, they said they could not. Then I asked for a supervisor and she said she couldn't give a free month of service because it was in the middle if the billing cycle. She did say sorry. Every time I call them you wait on hold 15 to 20 minutes. I have called them at least 6 times and each call lasted for about 30 to 45 minutes. The reps are apparently poorly trained or the just do not care. Either way it has been a huge waste of time and money. Clark Howard, you missed the Mark on this one ! This has an appearance of being a good company but there are lots of sneaky and not above board practices that they do. They say as a courtesy to the customer if they upgrade their plan automatically. This is true but then your account is locked in to the upper category and unless you change it you have to pay more money, when you don't necessarily have to. There is also a certain time window that you have an opportunity to change it. When you go to change anything on your account there are many limitations on what you can do which of course benefits consumer cellular. They are a US based customer service but sometimes I've been on the phone on hold for an hour without any response. If consumer cellular is so above board and honest how come you can't talk to management? There are no phone numbers or email addresses that you can contact anyone. They say as a courtesy again to the customer that you may write them via snail mail. A communications company that you have to communicate with them via snail mail??? That is so asinine and ridiculous! If you don't contact them right away about a problem or error, consumer cellular says it's your fault and they will not accommodate you on a mistake that you made. After receiving our latest bill from Verizon with a large price increase, we decided to switch our cellular service to Consumer Cellular. They had nice commercials and promoted their low-cost service for senior citizens. Unfortunately, the switch was not as simple as we expected. Consumer Cellular is supported by a US based customer service organization, and the majority of them had no idea what they were doing. They attempt to provide customers with customer service and technical support using a manual which was not easy to follow. What I kept hearing from them were excuses why our phones were not working instead of providing us with solutions. Anyhow, our switch to Consumer Cellular was a painful experience, and if we had to do it once again, we would not repeat the same mistake. Our problem started with the SIM cards Consumer Cellular provided us to support our switch from Verizon. Unfortunately, one of the SIM cards they mailed to us was bad. The technical support person in our local Target store was helpless. He was an independent contractor with limited technical knowledge and limited commitment/ability to solve our issues. He was being treated very poorly by his management and it reflected in his attitude toward us as Consumer Cellular customers. He managed to install the SIM cards provided to us by Consumer Cellular but could not overcome the incompetency of the Consumer Cellular representatives with whom he was speaking on the phone. When something didn't work the generic solution provided by the Consumer Cellular representative was to Change a SIM card. We ended up with two useless cell phones with no ability to receive phone calls or send/receive text messages. After changing a few SIM cards with no real solution to our ongoing operational issues, and after wiping one of our phones clean by one of the Consumer Cellular contractors, my wife ended up in the Apple store. A very efficient associate referred her back to the Verizon store (to pay our outstanding bill). The associate at Verizon was familiar with this issue and told her the problem was with Consumer Cellular. The ports for our two cell phones were not setup correctly. When my wife called Consumer Cellular, her call was transferred to the right level, who apologized profusely and took care of the issue right away. Both our phones were back to normal that evening. read more

Their charges are reasonable ... until you have to add in the hundreds they want you to pay for a new phone to replace the one they already sold you. Six weeks notice that my service will cease, complete with promises of how much I'll love the performance of the new phone. That might be true if I used it to listen to rap, watch porn, and/or play murderous online games, but kind of a high tariff for someone who simply wants to make/receive occasional phone calls. read more

Consumer Cellular is still billing me even though I went to a different carrier 3 months ago. This issue I thought was fixed 2 months ago when I called, but now I am calling again since I got billed for another month. I even have a verification code from the last time. I went to another carrier because they were less expensive and had better reception in the mountains. I is very disappointing to have this happen. read more

Well, I changed from another company because of Consumer Celluar's FAKE ADVERTISING. I should have looked at the reviews! Learned my lesson! They advertise to seniors, which I am, and say they can provide service for $20 a month. Granted low data usage but I turn off my data at home and do not go off wifi much at all. Maybe 1.5 hours a day. But the bill went from $20 to now $47 and will go up to at least $60. I was paying $50 with NO data increases and used data a LOT more. WOW! I learned a lesson! Just told their kind agent that I will be changing at the end of this cycle! read more

Wait on hold forever , terrible service. Had the phone for three days and went over there 500 MB of data so they charged me $53 for a three day phone service. The money back guarantee is a joke. Terrible service calls , dropped calls, 3G service and long hold times when you try to call for help. They were supposed to let me know about my last phone bill because I was shocked at the charges and I never heard from anybody.Called myself waiting on hold again 30 minutes to find out that yes those are my fees!! read more

"the person you are calling cannot accept any calls at this time, we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause". Like most people, my phone is directly related to my business. These people are nuts. I'd advise you stay away. I tried to set up service online, then via chat, but they insisted they had to speak with me. When I finally could speak, they made me read them everything I'd already typed in, then they demanded photos of my license, credit card, and utility bills. I have a credit rating of 825+ -- but in spite of that they have declined me service. Go figure. read more
