A lifelong CCHP member, I have found CCHP to be a reasonable and accessable provider. My relation with my primary provider spans 30 years. Of late however, CCHP via a mechanism of "prior authorization" has delayed access to several non controversial medications. This began upon my retirement. Seem like no one knows who places meds in this status, and CCHP has no answers, and worse, they have no mechanism to correct this, barring grievance. If you can endure a system that is increasingly bureaupathic, profit driven, and seemingly age discriminatory, CCHP is fine, and yes, I would prefer CCHP any day if given the choice between CCHP and Kaiser Always be prepared to file complaints or grievances which are surprisingly easy to find on the CCHP website. She, instead, initiated some sort of unrelated "complaint" process, talked over me when I tried to explain the issue, and was genuinely rude and talked down to me. Contra Costa Healthcare Plan has been a many month nightmare trying to get a loved one enrolled in Kaiser through Medi-Cal. In July they said the change would take place Aug 1 and to be patient. Kaiser has approved my family member in Aug for Sep 1 start date but CC Healthcare Plan never sent over the enrollment. We have been working on this since June and signed the paper form in July. I've probable spent 8+ hours on the phone and have been transferred to a half dozen different phone numbers. I've sent in many paper forms and filled out the nearly identical online health care choice form. I will be calling the dreaded (877)661-6230 again tomorrow after the departments are sending me backwards though the numbers I have already called. That number has a 60+ minute hold time and no in person option. of course the Kaiser option changed at the end of August so it's no longer available but I'm supposed to talk to a supervisor. No one since I started this process in June has had the power to do anything. a complete waste of time and resources. read more

As a county employee CCHP suited me fine. As a retire CCHP suited me fine UNTIL...I had to have out of plan emergency surgery in Reno. Holy fk-a-roni to get them to pay the damn bills was a nightmare. I was getting final billing notices, threats c of collection etc. I have my premiums of $300+ deducted from my retirement check every damn month!!!! Finally a combo of threatening a lawsuit & contacting a BoS member got the issue solved UPDATE - issue not resolved. CCHP Refused to pay the entire bill. Got notice today that I owe $2000. Very difficult to be a member of this health plan... having to go back & forth with the billers and CCHP was exhausting... it took CCHP almost a whole year to pay the emergency visits. I even ended up having to deal with collections. They have such a bad rep that specialist that are suppose to take the insurance would often tell me their not taking new patients or refer me to the County clinic. What's so funny is that the doctors office I had been going to for 10yrs would often tell me that I had to pay cash for appointments bc their system would Show I was not covered. I'd have to explain to verify active enrollment the docs office would need to call their members service phone number. When I complained to a member service rep he had the nerve to tell me it's my responsibility to educate the doctors office. Oh I could go on and on...and on. Yes I'm fortunate to have insurance through my employer but paying $919 monthly for CCHP is way too much for the trouble. read more

I would give them no stars. My son has multiple health conditions and was referred to their Pain Management Department. To begin with their Department consists of one person, Sara Richey Lucero. I went with my son to the consultation and was appalled by the conduct of this individual. She is an older woman (71 years old) who was more than 45 minutes late in seeing him. She started off the exam by wanting details on his sex life. She wanted intimate details on my life, his father's s life, and brother's death. She also wanted to know about his work. Because of health conditions he has not been working. She chastised him stating that if people in wheelchairs can work there was no excuse for him not to work. She further stated that he was lucky he was not living on the streets and admonished me for allowing him to live in my home. I won't go into further detail but her questions and judgemental attitude were ethically inappropriate. She concluded the exam by stating that, regardless of what medical conditions may be involved, pain is purely psychiatric in nature and due to lack of exercise. She indicated that people with pain issues need to be treated with psychotherapy, acupuncture, and "herbal" treatment if you get my drift. I looked into her after the exam and will just say she should not be practicing in this area and is a hypocrite in her judgments. DO NOT GO TO THIS PROVIDER. read more

This is the Health Plan that I use for my employee benefits. The only time that I come into this office is when I turn in my receipt to be reimburse for my optical purchases. Annually, I get $65 back on a pair of prescription glasses or for my contact lenses. The staff is friendly and the process is really easy, but the time frame on receiving my reimbursement check use to be a lot quicker. It use to only take a few weeks, but it takes almost 2 months now. I guess with the pay cuts, reducing staff and their hours.., I'm not surprised that the quality of their has been lowered. read more

Trying to contact their Member Services department via phone is one of the least enjoyable experiences period.

Over the past 30 years, I have dealt with dozens of health plans, from large corporate ones to individual policies purchased directly from insurers. In all that time I have not seen a plan as badly run, mismanaged and as terrible as Contra Costa Health Plan (CCHP). While they do have some exceptionally good nurses and employees answering their phones and trying to help people, the management that processes and makes claims decisions is the worst I've ever experienced. A colleague who is stuck with CCHP can't get anything done unless she complains to the Department of Managed Care in California, a place anyone who is a CCHP plan member should get familiar with immediately. Only by threat of state intervention does CCHP move in a timely manner on health claims that are considered everywhere else to be meeting the basic standard of care. CCHP also routinely denies medications deemed critical for patient care, cancels ongoing appointments with physicians, and has one of the strangest drug formularies in all of California. If you have any other alternatives please go someplace else! read more

While the GPs are good, my only experience with a specialist was an appointment with a hand surgeon (specialist? I think not). I went in seeking more mobility in my hand affected by carpel tunnel and some tiny bone chips, his response was to schedule me for a full hand fusion. "You"ll still be able to move your fingers" he said. What a hack! And on another note, management is totally inept. Medicare has never been contacted since I joined the plan and they show I have no Prescription Drug coverage even though the plan provides full coverage for me with no copay. So Medicare is building up a Gap in Coverage claim against me while I call in vain every phone number possible trying to get someone to help. Truly a pathetic organization. read more

If you want a Dr...specifically Dr. Mark Smith...to tell your 8 year old kid that he's not going to be successful at football, never going to make the pros, basically crush his dreams because he has vision problems, then I would highly recommend this plan. Also, at no additional charge, and without even asking, he'll toss in his infinite wisdom about your other kid and tell him that he'll never make any money as an artist. This guy should be put in a lab in the back somewhere and not have any contact with kids. read more

I am a home health nurse and a lot of times I have to call doctors about a patient's health status or health concerns. If it is urgent, then I call and speak with a triage nurse. For non-urgent matters though, I am advised to LEAVE A MESSAGE to respective Care Coordinators of doctors. RARELY, they would call me back. I have also received complaints from my patients who under CCHP health plan that calling the appointment hotline 1-800-495-8885 is a complete nightmare. So, I tried calling myself. While I was seeing my patient I assisted her in calling the hotline for her appointment. I had to stop with the call, because it was time for me to go, to see my next patient. I was on hold for 1 hour and 15 minutes until I hung up. Terrible! They also have an option to just leave a message and they will try to call you back. But, according to my patient"S", they would not call back! Contra Costa Health Services, how can you make your services better???
