My son and I were visiting from out of town and decided to grab food from Cook Out. The drive-thru was fast, which was great. I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich with chicken nuggets, hush puppies, and Cajun cheese fries. My son ordered a double cheeseburger with nothing on it, fries, and chicken nuggets. We also asked for honey mustard and barbecue sauce for the nuggets. When we got back to our hotel, we were disappointed to find only three small nuggets in the tray and no barbecue sauce. While the sandwiches were good and they did give us honey mustard and some type of special sauce we didn't care for, the biggest letdown was the Cajun cheese fries. There was no Cajun seasoning at all, and the cheese tasted terrible--like it came from an old can with a chemical or off taste. The cheese was so bad I had to throw the whole order of fries in the trash. So I came to this cookout tonight at 2:50am and according to the sign on the door and drive-thru they don't close til 3:30. Idk how this place cannot get 5 stars. Was the ribeye medium instead of medium rare? Joking aside, get a jr tray with a burger, Cajun fries, and a chicken wrap. Their other sides are a little small for my gluttonous appetite(looking at you cheese curds, onion rings, hush puppies, quesadilla). Anyway, the service is fast and friendly. You can even get a slice of cheesecake(don't forget to get a milkshake topping on it like caramel or chocolate syrup). The burgers are great for fast food burgers. This particular cookout opened when I was in college and it helped out my stomach/my mom's budget for me.Monday nights and Sunday nights are the worst for the drive thru- it can legit take an hour to get your food. But lets talk about the deal: 5$ for a main, 2 sides, and for another small fee, a drink or a milkshake. You can legit get a burger, 2 quesadillas, and fries and a shake for around $6. Most of the food quality is legit, only thing I didn't like was their pulled pork. If you want to upgrade the drink to a milkshake, it only costs $1 more. The shakes are really "hearty". They can fill you up and replace a meal on its own. I stopped into this Cookout when I was in town for the Tech-UNC game in late November. My friend and I were looking around for a place to grab a quick bite before heading over to a friend's house. I suggested cookout and off we went. We found parking easily enough and headed inside. There wasn't much of a line and when we got to the front our orders were taken quickly. We got our sodas which were extremely fresh and waited for our food to be ready. Not two minutes later both of our orders came out at the same time. The food was well prepared (not just thrown together quickly) and tasted great. Everything seemed like it was made to order - which is a lot more than can be said for a lot of fast food restaurants. I was a huge fan of the Cookout chain in North Carolina. Every time, I visited my friends at Wake Forest I would make it a point to go. This morning, my fiance and I were really feeling milkshakes for lunch so we decided to go to the new Cookout in Blacksburg and split a tray. Unfortunately, it just wasn't as good as I remember it being in North Carolina. You get a ton of food for under $5 but that's about it. We got 2 hotdogs, hushpuppies, chili, and two shakes. (Yep... this is a STANDARD order - no wonder why America is obese). The hotdogs were disgusting. They had been boiled and then thrown on the flat top for 2 seconds so it was just a greasy mess. I asked for them plain, but mine came drenched in mustard making it completely inedible. The side of chili? Completely tasteless. The saving grace of the meal were the hushpuppies. The milkshakes were just ok. They were so thick we couldn't even drink them. Even more annoying is their order pick-up. They give you things in stages. You don't get your whole meal at once. First we were given our food and then we had to get up two separate times to get our milkshakes. It was just very chaotic with them calling a million numbers every 2 seconds. They should just give you everything at one time even if you have to wait just a little longer. That said, I woudln't recommend this fast food joint to anyone. It's just not very good. All for a total of around $5.69, which was a tad of an up charge compared to the menu photos that are often passed around on the internet. The food was just okay, in relation to typical fast food; the cajun fries and shake were probably the main highlights of my meal. The best part, though, is you can upgrade to one of their milkshakes for only $1. Although it's always very busy, the line goes by quickly and the food comes out in no time. If you're going during a popular time, though, don't expect to find a table because there aren't enough for the crowd that comes in during peak hours.
