I came here with a friend and we had a simple order my cheeseburger with catsup, pickles and onions and onion rings and my friend ordered a chicken sandwich and was asked what side she wanted. It was her first time so she had to read what was offered. The young lady who was taking the order got a attitude with her and was demanding that she hurry when it wasn't taking long. I spoke up and said give us a second and it got worse. I couldn't believe it. Solid 4 stars. Our order is always correct. The value of the tray is great. I prefer the bbq sandwich tray with fries and hush puppies. Speaking of hush puppies - I'm picky about them. Their cookout trays are a great deal and it lets you try a little of everything. Their milkshakes are Divine. I've lived down south for almost 20 years and had never been to a cookout. I heard people rave about it in college and the drive thru line at most locations is usually busy. I decided to give it a try and I ordered chicken fingers, fries, and hushpuppies. I asked for a side of ranch and ketchup. First, the fries: they were semi-warm, mushy and tasted old like they'd been made hours ago, and they weren't salted. The chicken fingers were 20% mealy and stringy chicken and 80% hard & almost bitter tasting breading. The hush puppies were alright, those are pretty tough to screw up. The ranch dressing had a very oily/chemical taste. I had a few bites of everything but couldn't finish it and I felt pretty ill for several hours after eating there. read more

2am...I'm tired...the summer humidity is overworking my sweat glands and my soul. I'm hungry and still tired. The hospital cafeteria has long closed as have most of the local food eateries. The emergency room is still with the sterile "beeps" of life giving (but mind numbingly annoying) machines and I have another 5 hours until my shift ends. A nurse recommends Cook Out for a late night food stop. I take her recommendation dimly but optimistically. My arrival to the drive through brings me to a billboard sized menu. Its bright lights blind me as I stare to have my eyes adjust. Even through the thick evening humidity I can smell the unmistakable scent of grease, meat, and idle car emissions. I chose a standard burger combo with the un-standard sides of corn bread and chicken nuggets. My entire consumption was in some what of a daze. It was either the sweltering heat or the burgers charred grease that was causing me to perspire. No matter what, my meal was complete and functional. I did not make a second trip to Cook Out, however I am thankful that my path crossed its. To this day it is the only institution that I know of (besides public elementary schools) that serves chicken nuggets as sides. It was just that bit of nostalgia, combined with the desperate circumstances of hunger and exhaustions that brought me to Cook Out, and I'm thankful for it. read more

COOKOUT is again the best BBQ around Charlotte, imho. The double drive thru gets you in and out lightning fast--I didn't look at the clock but tonight I would swear it was less than 3 minutes, order to drive away, and that was because I couldn't decide which of their dozens of shakes I wanted.Fast, friendly service, delicious food and cheap! And it comes with its own easy access traffic light! What else could I ask for ? I did a review a couple of months ago on here and it was a negative...they had started insisting on sprinkling that hot cayenne powder stuff on top of the BBQ which was so hot it numbed my taste buds. When I finally called customer service and asked why the change, the little girl-kid said they had ALWAYS done it --- NOT! My family had been eating Cookout BBQ before she was born probably, so I knew better. I decided they could do without my business if the customer couldn't eat their bbq without feeling later like they had licked dry ice and the skin on their tongue had peeled off, and my review --and my comment to their customer service--said as much. Then...one day I forgot.. and zipped into the Albemarle Rd. Cookout and ordered, and Voila! no tongue-searing powder! They've also gotten rid of the little paper bags (it appears) so the fries don't get soggy on the way home...sweet! All in all... can't beat COOKOUT ! read more

Cook-Out; the first time I went there I was pleasantly surprised by their hot dog selection, the "Mexican Style dog" is really good, and so is the "Bacon Cheddar dog". Yesterday, I went there for lunch with my little brother, andI got the 1/4 pound burger "Cook-Out Style", which basically means Carolina style, or for those of you who don't know... that means with chili and coleslaw on top of the cheeseburger. The burger was OK, personally I think Wendy's "Carolina Classic" is better, but it was still good, a little dry and overcooked for me. However, the fries were some of the best I've ever had, straight up delicious...crispy, with just enough grease, and the skins still on. True I could have gotten lucky and received the first order of the batch, but hey, I think their fries are amazing. The onion rings were so-so, not as good as the fries, and a little too ordinary for my taste, too much batter too. And then the milk shake...ohhlala, fantastic. My brother ordered the peanut butter- banana shake, and it was perfection in a cup, I mean they greatly exceeded my expectations with this one. The consistency was just right, thick and creamy, with chunks of banana and clumps of peanut butter, ooh the kind of shake you never want to end. This is the second worse place I've eaten. My son ordered a "cheese dog". Now, when I say "cheese dog" you would think they were talking about a hot dog with cheese. NOT. Their version of a cheese dog is a hot dog bun with American cheese and toppings....NO HOT DOG. I asked them why do you call it a cheese dog...it should be called a cheese bun. This is about as good as it gets for a drive through restaurant. They originated in Greensboro 15 years ago or so. I used to eat there all the time for lunch when I lived near. I met the owner once and asked him how his restaurants are so consistantly good. He told me he used the best beef & ingredients he could find, and had it delivered in trucks with no signs on them to make it more difficult for his compitition to find out where his suppliers were. I never miss a chance to eat there, I just wish the were more of them with sit down dinning! read more

Once again, I am dumbfounded that I have just now been to the Cook Out after living in Charlotte for this long. Oh my God, this is the best milkshake I have ever had! My loyalty to Mr. K's has flown out the window with my move across the city because these shakes are out of this world. There are 30-plus flavors to choose from, they are thick and creamy, and yes, they are certainly spoon worthy. I usually just take the lid off and eat the chilly yumminess off the straw. To date (and I've been twice this week!) I've tried the carmel fudge...standard and delicious....and the orange push-up. The OPU is where its at! If you liked these little tubes of orange sherbert as a kid, this shake will transport you back to being nine years old in an instant. Classic! The burgers are also great....they come in four differet sizes and I think there are also four different topping combos (Carolina style, steak style, etc.) They also have $.99 hushpuppies, chicken nuggets, and sweet tea....rockin'. Today I stopped at Cook Out for lunch. The order I received was not my order and I did not realize it until I was at the stop light and thought I would enjoy an onion ring on the way home. The box contained something in a wrapper, french fries and hush puppies. The order I requested was a cheddar style double burger and double onion rings. So, I turned around, drove back, waited in line and realized that not only was the food not what I had requested but the price of what I received was less than what I paid. Knowing they would be unable to reuse the food because of health department regulations, I asked the server if I could keep the food he had given me. He readily agreed and then within seconds (apparently from inside feedback) requested to see the box I was given. So, I handed him the box and he turned around. I thought he simply needed to double check the contents but when he turned around again he told me the food had been thrown away. Seriously? In this economic environment Cook Out would choose to take away food that could not be used again and throw it away rather than allow me to keep it? Seriously? Now, I do understand that I have the food I ordered and paid for and I plan to enjoy eating it moments from now. But, my point is that it seems wasteful and somewhat cruel to use my time, gasoline, energy, etc. to fix their error and have food thrown away that I might enjoy and might order in the future. This leaves me thinking that there are other places nearby (Sun Rise where I normally get enough food to bring home for another meal at about the same price as I paid for this) and other alternatives (cooking more at home) instead of supporting a business that does customers his way. Throw it away? Really? Yesterday morning prior to 7:30AM, my phone rang with a call from Cook Out. Early morning! The answering service took the call. A female requested that I phone Cook Out, at a number she provided, at my convenience. Yesterday was busy for me. So, today I phoned and spoke with their corporate representative. A guy assured me they were simply following their rules to take the food and prevent someone from returning and telling them they had the wrong order. I assured him that I had gone there often enough that they probably know me and that I had my own policy of not supporting business when they proved they could not use common sense but had to just follow their rules and that throwing away food was wasteful. He told me he would send me a coupon. Time will tell if this is done and when my next visit there might or might not be done. read more

This is probably one of my worst experience I have at this restaurant but would give another try. I went today to this particular cookout since I was in a hurry to go to work. Therefore I stop at this particular establishment. I then walk up to the window to order my food, but the black women in the cash registers look at me and ignored me for a few minutes and said to someone in the building "can someone take the order at the window?" At this time a very nice black guy came and ask what I would like to order? I then ordered two trays for work where it will last me until tomorrow. After I order from the guy the two ladies then come put my order into the computer. At the same time I ask the ladies "can you all provide me with two big bags of ice also? I don't have time to go to the polar machine to get some." then one of them said "we don't sale ice nor have anything to put it in." Since I need the ice to keep the food cold I tell them to put it in the plastic carryout bags. Then both of them stare at me, like what you crazy? This went on for a few minutes until the black guy bring the food to the window for them to pack it up for me and then they decide to get my drinks for me. After they gave me my food and drinks they still refuse to give me two big bags of ice. Neat less to say I was late for work with them not provide me with some ice but a stupid stare. I do hope that cookout hires people that are welling to provide a better, faster and efficient service that will provide better service for all of us, or really I will not go back to that one. I will just go to another cookout or restaurant that won't give me the stupid looks and bad services. read more

Cookout is very good & is open late...they have great shakes at an excellant price....but only if you go to the one by Concord Mills....I've been to the ones at Albemarle Rd., University, & Sharon Amity...and all I do is get mad...they don't understand what the word chocolate means...I'll order a double chocolate (or fancy chocolate)....with extra chocolate chips...they either don't put many chips in or the shake is vanilla....and if you place an order with more than one shake, with 2 things in each one....they get very confused....they make you repeat it many times...they don't mark which is what...& they always get it wrong... read more

I've been a fan of Cookout since they arrived. Now, I'm givin' it up. They are saturating their perfectly fine barbecue with that heartburn-incendiary "Texas Pete" sauce now, Their barbecue used to be served like NORMAL food. If you wanted to slather on hotsauce later, that was your personal choice. No more. I am advised by a more than snippy customer service (including the CSR manager in that snippiness, even) that the OWNER has dictated that hotsauce drench every serving of barbecue. They even tried to tell me that was the way it always was. As a customer long before those gals were even working there, I know better. Forcing the customer to remember to tell them EVERY time NOT soak it in hotsauce (AND check the food EVERY time) is like having to say, "by the way, DON'T pour ketchup all over my fries." Let them give people with cast-iron stomachs little packets of that hotsauce, instead of making everyone have to 'special order' AND then check whether or not they gave you what you asked for. (more than a few times my request to leave it off--- when I first started to see it appear ALL the time ---was ignored). Phooey on that haphazard way of doing business to accommodate SOME customers.
