While visiting the Carolina's at the start of 2026, we decided to do a short day trip to Charolette and ended up at Optimist Hall. As a New Yorker we have our share of markets/food halls and OH fits the familiar script, with a slightly smaller footprint than what I've experienced. What never seems to change is that securing seating can be a challenge because all spots are "prime" real estate and the abundance of choices is an indecisive person's nightmare. Nonetheless, to all the foodies at heart those are just minor details for mere mortals... lol. We managed to grab a larger enough table and everyone circled until we made our individual choices and then returned to our central meeting spot to break bread and indulge in all of our finds. We enjoyed several of the eateries we experienced and I was particularly intrigued by the plant store (albeit kinda pricey). Return is a no brainer especially for the places that were most memorable. The setup here reflects what you often see in the Southeast: surface parking rather than garages or robust public transportation. It works, but it's different from West Coast infrastructure where you might hop on BART or a streetcar and arrive right at the door. Where Optimist Hall really shines is as a social destination. Fun spot- can't believe it has taken me this long to review it. This place is perfect for guests coming in to town because they can try bites from different restaurants that make up Charlotte in one place! Also good if your family cannot decide where to eat- go here and everyone can pick a different spot. Service is standard, some restaurants are better than others. Lots of sitting area inside and outside as well. My favorite so far is the chicken and cheese empanada, the pasta spot and the buffalo chicken grilled cheese. read more

Optimist Hall is elite behavior Exhibit A: Dumpling Lady. One word: dumplings. Another word: obsession. I could stop there...but I won't. Exhibit B: The shops are such a fun mix. The plant store has no business being that cute, and every time I wander in, I convince myself I'm a plant person capable of transporting any new purchases 700 miles back home... (I have done it. It wasn't easy but I did do it and it was worth it!) Exhibit C: A Flower Child drink from The Spindle Bar. Thank me later. Exhibit D: Games downstairs!! Oh my goodness, what a treat!!! I can't believe this was my first time at this food hall, but it definitely won't be my last. The food selection was amazing, ranging from grilled cheeses, barbecue, hot chicken, Ethiopian, ice cream, poke, dumplings, bakeries, you name it. We ordered the Pig Mac grilled cheese from Papi Queso, the brisket fries from Noble Smoke, and the hot chicken from Poppycox. Everything was delicious, especially the grilled cheese. So full of flavor, juicy, and crunchy. My only caveat is that everything is quite expensive, as I expected in a food hall, but I was still very happy with the selection and quality of food. There is plenty of seating inside and outside, with lovely seating and decoration. The food came out fairly quickly even though it was decently busy, which was nice. Parking can be crowded, but if you go to the back there is a pay-for lot that is generally open. Perfect for a casual date or hangout with friends and family. 10/10 experience! read more

Optimist Hall is such a fun place to hang out and explore. Tons of different food vendors, a couple boutique shops and pretty much just something for anyone. I love that they have free EV charging too. I wish parking were free for a bit longer than 90min because I could definitely find a place here to do some work or read for awhile. Some of my favorite vendors are dumpling lady and velvet taco. The bar has a good array of traditional beer / wine plus fun seasonal offerings. Really neat space. Didn't come for the food, but came to roam around. Got here a little early, so not all the food stands were open. I actually walked here - at first glance from the outside, I was a little confused as I thought I was at a corporate campus of some sort. Eventually, figured my way. The inside is quite nice - think Southern charm meets hipster. Wood floors, tall picture windows letting in a lot of natural light, breezy indoor ceiling fans for those summer days, and comfy places to sit. Oh - and plants! Loved how decorated some of the sections were with wood furniture accented with beautiful greenery. Saw some folks just chilling or working off their laptops. I did find some plugs so chilled on some of the comfy seating to charge my phone. There is an outdoor section with some nice seating as well. While I didn't get a chance to try any of the food, this was a cool gem of a place to spend an hour or two. There are also a few retail shops, so it's not a pure food court. We pulled into the parking lot and immediately received a text from the parking app explaining the parking rules, which was actually helpful. Once we sorted that out, we headed into the food hall. I've been to several food halls in other cities, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked Optimist Food Hall. There's a lot of seating, including some semi-private areas, which made it easy to relax even though it was busy. We visited on a Saturday around noon, and the place was pretty full with a lively atmosphere. While we were a bit underwhelmed disappointed ( it wasn't as good as the last time) by the food we ordered, we really enjoyed the overall experience and the layout of the space. One thing that did make me uncomfortable, though, was while waiting for our food, two men stood extremely close to me at the counter. It felt unusual. Was not impressed on my most recent visit. Great anchor tenants have always held it down with food offerings, but the ants on tables and by the windows really disgusted me. It's great for everyone, whether you're going alone, with your significant other, friends, or even large groups. You don't have to settle on just one restaurant for your meal and that's the beauty of Optimist Hall! There's plenty of parking and the first 90 minutes is free. There's also tons of seating both inside and outside, so you don't have to take your food to-go. I purchased food and drinks from: Bao and Broth, Botiwalla, and Felix' Handmade Empanadas. Not really sure how I've never reviewed this place, lol. I love OH, I do not love the paid parking but I get it. This trip was quick so I got to park for free, I believe the first 90 mins are free. I met up with some coworkers and as usual, really enjoyed the vibes. The plants are like no other in OH, they're so well cared for and beautiful. They make the place come alive. I also noticed a few cool changes like you're able to order a drink from your seat and someone will bring it to you. I thought that was really neat. Can't wait to go back soon! read more

What a find! Great food Hall in a historic building. Every category of food available. They offer free parking for 90 minutes which is nice. The hardest part is deciding what you want to eat. My husband ordered a grilled Mac and cheese sandwich. He said the best he ever had. I ended up ordering one chicken empanada for $5.00. Super favorable from Felix Empanadas and a birthday cookie from Suarez bakery. Buttery and fresh. Bathrooms were large and very clean. The also had a large seating area outside with umbrellas. Was looking forward to eating the okra there but it was sold out yesterday (071325 Pay parking but it's minimal. Worth the exploration visit even if it's one time. All of the stalls are laid out in a way that lines do not interfere with the foot traffic, and most every menu was easy to understand and comprehensive. Highly recommended by co-workers for dining experience in Charlotte. I been to so many food hall in many cities, this is one of the biggest one out there. It has something for everyone. Sweets, bbq, Chinese, American...you name it. They have a flower shop tuck at the back and a couple proper restaurant too. Free parking for first hour, but it is usually so crowded that there are no where to sit. Cleaning crew is doing their job but during peak hours they just can't keep up. Food is good, the best is probably the dumplings. BBQ and pizza you can get much better option in the city. Prices are higher than average though I think. Very cute spot!! Lots of options, I got grilled cheese, dumplings and chinese buns. Loved them all except the buns, they were overpriced and the only flavor I liked was the original pork one. The grilled cheese was AMAZING! Same with the dumplings, I would 1000% recommend those! The shops are also very cute and fun to walk around. It was raining so we didn't check out the outdoor area. This hall seems to be a good place to grab drinks & food as they have a good selection of places to choose from. The spinel bar , they offer a nice variety of cocktails with fun names. The Empanada place was pretty good , Hand made Empanada , Steak , Chicken are both good , carnitas , Cubano are also good nice taste to them & Spinach is not bad. we tried a few of the sauces & best sauces were the Garlic & Mambo , honey mustard was also good. I've been to a few food halls lately (Kern Hall in Knoxville is great) and enjoyed it. Park the car one time, get access to live music, bars, multiple restaurants, several retail outlets and have a great time. The variety and liveliness make for a fabulous time and save you a lot of hunting around for places. I popped into here because I wanted the Dumpling Lady but then I found all sorts of stuff and even brought back some take out for Mrs. K. An enjoyable experience for sure. I don't like paying for parking but I think Optimist Hall has worked out a way to make parking a whole lot less painful. It still sucks but it's better. Here's how it works: They've read your tag number as you drive in (I am not a fan of ALPRs) and you register it at a meter with a credit card. They read your tag number as you leave. SO GOOD OMG!! Literally circled this food hall 4 times because everything smelled so good. We ended up with dumplings, bao buns, and grilled cheeses and gelato and all were so delicious omg. I want to go back so bad to try the like 6 other restaurants we didn't get to try. There are some cute shops here too to check out. THERE IS SO MUCH SEATING TOO SO CUTE!
