Every time I come to this cookout I have quick and great service! They are always busy, but I don't ever feel like I have to wait too long.

The food is generally good but the service is rather lacking. They never seem to wipe the milkshakes down so your hand ends up covered in shake and I have to ask for napkins and such so my cup holder isn't totally gross by time I get home It just feels like some staff are simply there to hang out with friends. I totally get it but I don't think it's asking much to make sure the order is right, the top is on, and the cup isn't covered in overflow before going back to chatting. You can tell some really do care and I always appreciate that. The food as I said is perfectly fine but really the service needs to get better here. read more

I would rate this place with zero stars if I could. I keep hoping their service will improve, but I'm starting to lose faith. I spent over $10 on a tray, and I got the tiniest piece of chicken I've ever seen. Plus, I had to wait nearly 15 minutes in line for it. This is just unacceptable. Visited this Cookout 8/23/25, and the cashier Logan was very curtious, and kept busy when no customers were in line to make orders. He went around and made sure ALL the tables were clean. He is a great asset to the TEAM! Keep up the great work! read more

Good food, friendly service. Dining room is back open. All the great value that you can get at any Cookout. Cashier (receipt said her name was Mary) was obviously still learning the ropes but was very helpful and polite and everyone has to start somewhere so it's fine that she was still getting the hang of things. After the last time CookOut screwed me, I not only swore I'd never eat there again, I wrote an email to the company. Well, tonight I broke my word and had a family member bring CookOut to me at work, as it was the closest take-out on their way. I ordered a double cheese burger (no tomato), fries, onion rings and a Coke. What I got was a double cheeseburger WITH tomato, a corndog, a glass of ice with a shot of Coke....and FOUR onion rings. Four. Tiny Onion rings. I'm at work so I can't attach a pic, but I may come back later and do it. This is just unacceptable. I was introduced to CookOut in NC--when I moved across town, I even deliberately chose an apartment down the road from a location just so I could stop on my way home. in NC (their home state) food was Amazing, with plentiful portions, the service was always great, and they never got my order wrong. I don't know who owns/manages the Virginia locations (franchise?) but whomever they are, they should be Fired...immediately. They're utterly destroying the reputation of a great parent company. The food is disgusting, the service is horrible, the portions are a rip off, and they couldn't get an order right if you walked in and completed it for them. Being that I'm a California native the chain known as COOK OUT was foreign to me. Founded in 1989 in Greensboro, NC I'm happy to see the expansion! Lord knows the town of Mechanicsville is REALLY excited about this place. The lines have been wrapped around the building. My son and I waited over a week before we were ready to attempt the crowd. We finally went on May 26th to see what all the fuss is about. We both got the "Big Double Tray" with fries and hush puppies and two large Cokes. The total came out to $11.46 It was then magically clear why everyone is coming here. You simply CAN NOT beat the price. The food was just like the name implies. The gimmick is burgers and hot dogs "cooked out door style" and it totally hits the mark. Mechanicsville location visited recently ordered a double burger tray, 2 sides then each item was an add on and price just got lettuce. Manager and staff ok. Got back to table opened burger and it was like two half patties side by side, didn't even fill the roll. Was a regular this is a good way to lose customers the patties were so thin I swear if you held them to window you could of seen through them. The burgers were so much thicker before and juicier, that was the difference from other burger joints, sort of a bait and switch from when they opened. read more

This is the worst cook out hands down if I could give negative stars I would!! Not only do they always get my orders wrong when they are the easiest orders plain barbecue trays with chicken cascades trays. The last time I went I got a huge order $123.77 huge but it was 9 cascades trays and 4 barbecue trays 2 plain 2 regular. I get my order I'm missing 4 trays and all my sides of caseo sauce. They ask me to pull to the side door so they can try and get it right . I reach into the bag to check my barbecue sandwiches and I pull out a completely drenched sandwiches is some type of slimy greasy stuff the guy comes out with 2 of the 4 missing trays and none of my 11 drinks so I ask him to grab the sandwich and take it back he said no you can keep it so I got mad at this point and said you will serve your customers this mess but won't touch it to take it back so now I really get mad I have 3 of my kids I. The food was nothing special for BBQ. The line and the wait was really long. You better be ready to know what you like to order because they will take it with a side of attitude and haste. They will forget to give you forks and condiments, I think they expect you to eat with your hand and choke on their lack luster fries, so be prepared to bring your own utensils and ketchup because no way are you going to get back in that long a** line for them to fix your order if they mess it up. My review is pre covid and again the same experience recently. The drive through speaker is horrible, difficult to hear anything on. The people working there just don't care. I won't be back. Cook out has always been our go to when we just wanted something quick. We've never had an issue with food or waiting for it. Tonight was the most ridiculous, unprofessional environment I've ever seen. We order our food and waited. About a dozen other people care through and received there food well before we did. When I questioned the person at the counter she responded with attitude, "well I guess they're making it". After another 15 mins I gave up and asked for a refund..... they still hadn't even made our food! This is the end of our visits here. read more

Like others have said the service is poor. The girls behind the counter kind of glare at you until you order. No greeting, no let me know when you are ready, nothing. When you ask a question they kind of mumble a completely expressionless answer. When your order is called they just push it towards you without a word. This location is not on par with other locations. In general, cookout is a safe bet for decent food at a reasonable price. However, this particular cookout is staffed by children who do not care or understand customer service. They literally do not look at you or acknowledge the words that come from your mouth...simply press buttons and call out numbers when orders are ready. I'd prefer a touchscreen as it is essentially the same experience. I've been here 3 times and each was frustrating. Everything is filthy, the staff appear high and orders are missing items at an alarming rate from my own experience and watching folks come back to complain. I always come here when I'm craving for something in the middle of night, so I went to cookout last night after work. Whoever was on headset spoke with such an attitude when I was asked about my burger... and I told her two times that I had two separate orders, but she still combined them at the window until I told her. From there she was obviously pissed, so she immediately close the windows. From someone who also works at a fast-food restaurant at late hours during this chaos, her actions were unnecessary and unacceptable, and doing stuff like that could hurt their business. read more

We pulled up to Cook Out at around 9:00 PM. Here's the scene: Teens, teens everywhere (working and ordering), an unkempt restaurant with napkins and slippery substances strewn around the floor, and an equally disorganized women's restroom with a wonky toilet. The place could benefit from better customer service and a checkup from the owner every month or so. Quick tip, this seems to be the hangout spot for local teens so get there early to avoid the rush and a long wait for your order. All in all the milkshakes definitely live up to the hype!! Really mad at this cookout, I went here because I was passing through and ordered my normal with Cajun fries. Been there before in the past. The food is good but the service is not very good. It is very slow, it's understandable when they are busy. I over heard someone's ticket being lost. What really made me write this is when I went in to just grab a milkshake I went to hand the cashier my money and she went to the side to answer the phone! So I've had issues here every now and then but it's always been when it was super busy and so I let it go, because of the amount of people. But today I was the ONLY 1 in the drive through, and the parking lot was pretty much empty. I got a tray and there were no fries at all. Visited the Mechanicsville, Virginia location today (Nov 23, 2018) at 9:11 PM. Ordered 2 trays and a milkshake. Was first handed trays with no bag, no napkins, no ketchup (that was requested). My burger was missing the cheese I paid for. They almost forgot to give the milkshake and never gave the ketchup even though I reminded her after asking for a bag, napkins, and straws. I was the only person in the drive thru and there was no customers indoors. I tried calling over and over, but they never answered the phone. So, I've never experienced an issue here before today, but the behavior that I experienced from the drive thru cashier and two of her cohorts was extremely unprofessional and down right rude. I'd placed my order in the drive thru, but upon receiving the bag I noticed that the order was wrong. I explained to the young lady what I had ordered and returned the bag to her asking if I could get it changed. At this time, she proceeds to say something to two other workers nearby and they proceed to talk loudly about the situation. It wasn't a big deal to me and I'm not sure why it was being made to seem as if I had made some mistake or was being unreasonable. When the young lady returned to the window I had to explain to her that I wasn't trying to get something for free and that I wanted to pay for what I had ordered as the three had been discussing that I had to pay. I received my order with quite the attitude from the second young lady who was at the window (upon arriving home I will note that the order still wasn't correct) and drove off. I realized after driving a few minutes that I was never given my second receipt and it also wasn't in the bag. There was no answer when I called the store and the phone just rang. So, I will also need to follow up regarding the adjusted price that I was charged. Sad that something that really wasn't a big deal turned into the reason that I won't return to the Mechanicsville location. So the fault and I decided to give them a try. When I got home I found they did not give me my daughters chicken strips. I also found the doubles burger I ordered was only a single, and a very small single at that. The cheese fries where very small too. I called to talk to someone, however I got hung up on. I am not happy and am event thinking of calling Visa to do a charge back, which I have never done. Very disappointed. I was hoping they would make this right. read more

I ordered two platters. The burgers were over salted and very lonely. For some reason they didn't put anything on them after asking them to. The fries were so salted, we couldn't finish them. Worst Cook Out I've ever been to. Most that I've been to are fast and friendly and this one was the complete opposite in both respects. The service was extremely slow compared to other locations I've been to and the girl that was handing us our drinks through the drive through window complained in a very negative, unprofessional, and rude way that it was "too cold for this" as she held one of our drinks out waiting for us to take it as we were trying to set down the 3 other drinks that she had already handed us. The food itself was okay but not up to the Cook Out standards that I'm used to. The quesadilla wasn't cooked long enough as the cheese hadn't even melted.
