Nothing better than ice cream (especially during National Ice Cream Month). I absolutely love the creemees at Spotty Dog. They only offer them on weekends. My fiancé's best friend lives in VT and we first fell in love with them there. It's so nice to have a spot in Richmond that offers them. This charming ice cream parlor in Church Hill is great for an ice cream fix. I've only tried their vegan oreo, salty chocolate chip cookie and vanilla flavors in traditional ice cream. Their ice creams are on the lighter side. I find that I much prefer their creemees with add-ons! Locals love this spot so the wait can take a bit sometimes. I love that there is plenty of indoor seating and a couple benches outside to enjoy your ice cream at. I love the light wooden seating interior. The people who work here are quite sweet too. As some of Church Hill's newest residents, my fiance and I have spent far more time and money at Spotty Dog than I would like to admit - but I don't regret it at all :) A classic and walkable neighborhood ice cream spot that feels very homey, approachable, and fairly priced whether you're getting a singe serving or a pint to go. They change up the flavors enough that you are kept on your toes but also keep their classics on-board whenever you feel like you need to dive into something more reliable. I appreciate the weekend inclusion of soft serve and the occassional concrete-adjacent "cup-sundae" (see pictures). Staff are always so welcoming + efficient, and every flavor is fantastic. Special shoutouts to the Movie Nite, S'mores Redux, What the Fluff, Banana Puddin', and the grand daddy of them all - Malted Madagascar Vanilla, a shockingly unique, yet simple, flavor I have grown to absolutely love. I had heard good things about this "New England" style ice cream shop, and being from New England, I had to try it. It's located in a cool little neighborhood with ample street parking. Their flavors are pretty unique and I was able to taste several of them. The girl scooping the ice cream gave me some recommendations, so I opted for a small cup of malted Madagascar vanilla and cappuccino biscotti. The ice cream was super creamy and flavorful, definitely a winner from this self proclaimed ice cream afficionado. The employees were extremely welcoming, patient, and took extra care when we mentioned a nut allergy, even though it was a busy Friday night with a line out the door. Solid ice cream, cool flavors but the flavors don't really pack a punch. If you let the ice cream melt a bit then the flavor comes through a little more. I recommend the salty chocolate chip cookie which had big bittersweet chips in it (not salty at all though) and the black pepper hot honeycomb which was one of the other stronger flavors (not spicy, but great texture with the crunch of the honeycomb). The ice cream is churned/frozen a little hard in my opinion, but Spotty Dog has a good variety of flavors and there are at least two vegan flavors. I wasn't a fan of the cafe du valkyrie because it wasn't as coffee flavored as I'd like, but I'm sure others would enjoy it. Heard rave reviews about this place so I had to check it out myself! As a chocolate/caramel lover, I got the salted chocolate chip and the movie night. The former is a cream based ice cream with chunks of chocolate covered wafer/rice crispies. I think there were occasional cookie dough type mixtures in there. The sprinkle of salt on the chocolate was a great contrast of flavors. The latter is a more buttercream based ice cream with caramelized popcorn. Loved how all of their ice cream bases and toppings are all house made! The texture of the ice cream was smooth and creamy. Sweetness was as expected. They were so nice and allowed us to try so many other flavors. The miso PBJ was quite interesting too - a strawberry based ice cream and chunks of peanut butter and some subtle miso umami flavors. Another cool flavor was the burnt sugar banana bread! It was more burnt sugar/caramel-y than it was banana flavored. The store is spacious with good amount of seating! My partner and I both got a double (generous) scoop of Salty Chocolate Chip Cookie (which has a sweet cream base). I can't remember if the cookies are made in house but she definitely said the chocolate chips are, and you can tell! Everything tasted fresh and homemade. Our only constructive criticism is that the flavors do not have a description and the ice cream is not easily visible. But staff will give you samples and a thorough description of each!
