When my furnace went out out, I had Modern Day come out the same day, assessed my needs , and had my new furnace installed on a Saturday morning. They were punctual, professional, and took great care with the installation,as well as the old furnace removal. They laid down floor tarps entering the hardwood floor entrance, as well as the carpeted stairs leading down to the basement furnace room. When they left there was no trace left behind other than a professionaly installed new furnace. We happen to replace our 20+ years old and Kraig tuned it 2 years back and gave life for another 2 years (other people were jumping with quotes to buy new Furnace last year itself). Now this year as COVID is settling down, we decided to replace our furnace and AC. Kraig is spot on explaining the multiple opportunities and models we can choose from. One thing I realized after talking to him he is 'Technician' but not a 'Sales person' as he was not pushing to get for high end model and load multiple optional. I was told the first appointment of the day is the only one that could be guaranteed, since some issues take longer than expected to address. I believe any other appointment is a 2 hour window. Of course the A/C had to fail on a 96 degree day when my elderly parents were over. Kraig did a great job being responsive first of all. I had Kraig come and tune up my furnace right after another HVAC company replaced my blower motor (at an exorbitant price). The high priced repairman from the other HVAC Company said that my fan cage was warped and that I had small cracks in my heat ex-changer - so he recommended that I get a new furnace. After seeing these positive reviews I called Modern Day Comfort and Kraig came on-time for the appointment, he cleaned and inspected the furnace and told me that the fan cage and heat ex-changer were not a concern at this time. Instead of having to bite the bullet and buy another furnace I only had to pay Kraig's very reasonable price for the tune-up/inspection. And with Kraig's annual tune up I believe that I can get a number of more years from the old furnace. That was on a Tuesday, by Friday when I hadn't heard from him I emailed him to get an update. He said he had sent the estimate and to check my spam. 1) We both have gmail accounts so it's highly unlikely it went to spam (in fact it hadn't, I checked) and 2) When responding to my email why wouldn't you just reattach the quote? He not only told my parents that there was nothing major wrong with their furnace (what a relief!), but he cleaned it for a very fair price and even reduced the price when my Dad went to pay him. I highly recommend Modern Day Comfort. Several days ago, the furnace went out at a rental property I own in Palatine, IL. Due to the urgency to get the heat back on for my tenants, I scheduled a service call with Four Seasons. They diagnosed the issue as a bad gas valve and wanted to charge over $800.00 for that part alone. In addition, the technician indicated that the collector box had a small crack and would be another $500.00. But what they really wanted was to sell me a new furnace to the tune of over $7,000.00!! It felt like a punch in the gut, and I knew I was being ripped off. That's when I contacted Kraig Kane, the owner of Modern Day Comfort. Despite an already busy day, Kraig made time to come out that afternoon. He agreed that the gas valve needed replacement, and suggested a different approach to repair the collector box. His quote was about ONE THIRD of the Four Seasons estimate. Moreover, Kraig said there was no reason to replace the furnace, but even if it would have been necessary that it could be done for $3,000.00. He installed the new gas valve and had the furnace working that day. Unfortunately, when the unit fired up, Kraig noticed some flame rollout, which indicated a further issue with the heat exchanger. For safety reasons, he had to shut the furnace down for the night. The next day, Kraig reached out to the manufacturer and confirmed that the heat exchanger was still under warranty. He went out of his way to pick up the replacement parts, and worked until around 7:00 that evening to get the furnace running again. When Kraig pulled the old heat exchanger out, he quickly found a hole in one of the pipes which confirmed his diagnosis. At the end of the day, Kraig's invoice for parts and labor was still only HALF of what Four Seasons quoted just for the initial work. I am absolutely certain that there is no way Four Seasons would have researched the warranty on the heat exchanger or even taken on that repair. Instead, they would have pushed me to buy a new furnace at more than double the price of what a unit should cost for a small ranch home. Thanks to Kraig's knowledge, expertise, and exceptional customer care, I now have a working furnace that will likely last another 10+ years.
