A fun local coffee shop near campus. Be sure to go upstairs as there is a different coffee shop downstairs. If taking the coffee to go make sure you say that as they use real coffee mugs for coffee there. They have all kinds of fun coffees and the barista was so helpful sharing which options were fan favorites . read more

I was very confused when I first entered the building since there are two shops. The downstairs shop was having a baby shower so naturally I went up then found the sign on the wall. This is a funky spot that is directly across from the USC campus where I was. I had coffee already so I went with a vanilla rose Italian soda. I was pleased to see they had Monin syrups. They had so many options so it would be great for people that like more customization. I will say they were a little busy and the space is very tight. The baristas were a little short with people who did not move aside or did not pick up their orders right away. I did like that they featured local artists in the shop. Would recommend for one thing different. read more

Cool Beans is a really "cool" coffee shop, I loved it! It was very old-fashioned, but timeless at the same time. The coffee was really good, and I wish that I wasn't watching my weight because the food items looked absolutely delicious! I'll have to come back and try one some time soon. When I go to coffee shops I always order a plain latte (hot or cold). I do this to determine how well the coffee is made without being filled with sugary syrups. I came to Cool Beans Coffee Company and immediately thought this is a really neat location and spot. Love the aesthetic of the inside. I spoke with a younger man and asked if I could have an iced latte. I proceeded to ask where they source their beans from and he responded with "good question" and never tried asking the other two coworkers he had right next to him but continued to make my latte. After he finished my latte, I took a sip and was disgusted. This is one of the worst latte's I've ever had in my entire life (this is no exaggeration). I've had bad coffee before, but this tops all of them. Absolutely terrible. How are you going to work at a coffee shop and firstly not know where you source your beans from, secondly not take the time to practice pouring a decent shot of espresso, and thirdly not bother to ask their coworkers to answer my question. Whoever the owner is of this coffee shop, forgive me, but they do not care for their customers. Good coffee is served when an owner shows love and care for their product. I will never be coming here again and will be advising others to avoid this place as well. Thanks. read more

I've been here 3 times now, and it is so good! I love their coffee, especially their lattes! The pumpkin bread was super good, but even better was their daily soup, which was tomato soup. It was so good, and I loved the focaccia bread it came with. The inside is so comfy and warm, it is a great study spot indeed. read more

Early morning coffee is always a mess for me and my partner and we decided to try out a new spot. Cool beans is definitely unique, it's an older house with an old house feel but really cute if that's your type of thing. It appears to be more of a college spot with little nooks to study. There's nice paintings on the wall which appeared to be done by local artist. The coffee was pretty nice and there are two levels to this establishment I'm not sure if they're two different entities but upstairs has more gourmet type coffee's and savory breakfast sandwiches. Cool beans is amazing! Hot or cold! Lots of iced drinks this summer, walk right up between seven am and two P.M. daily. Try ordering online in advance online. I ordered a prepaid brunch the night before and when I got there in the morning itwas ready right on time. Plus I received a text from the toast app, letting me know that it was ready.. delicious! Everyone in town knows, Jack, Steph, and Charlie make a great crew for fantastic fresh food and top notch, Customer satisfaction. Dogs are welcome outside. And there's a bowl for dogs. This is a great summer visit for your dog walk along the Susquehanna River boardwalk and to the Turtle Snactuary small beach for our local sea turtles. Check out mooch the crane on the pier, if you come without your pooch. The white crane may let folks within about 30 feet so that you can get an excellent photo. Also look for the bald eagles flying overhead. Cool beans! Get a turkey pesto sandwich for the road. Order it to go with your brunch, just eat it later, that's the ticket! read more

The place has potential with a nice variety of seating and places for working. However, I've given this place a few chances and every time I encounter staff that is rude and that makes degrading comments. The signs on the walls about policies don't have a good vibe/tone and state common courtesy so in my opinion, unnecessary. Lastly, the price is too much for the size cups they give compared to other coffee shops I've gone to. And, the milk in my lattes each time has tasted so sweet even when I ask for unsweetened. Finally giving up on this place. read more

the vegan hot chocolate wasn't mixed at all, so it was like hot milk and chalky clumps of unsweetened cocoa and nothing else. She also only filled my cup halfway which is ridiculous because I paid $5 for a hot cocoa and got only three sips. The only reason I'm not leaving a one star review is because the portobello mushroom wrap is always consistently good but I've rarely had a drink here that wasn't a complete rip off read more

My first time checking out Cool Beans and I can say that it seems like a pretty cool little spot. I was a little confused pulling in because there is another business in the same building but just walk in and go upstairs and you'll find cool beans! I got an americano with two shots and a bacon and cheese croissant because DUH bacon. I'm pretty sure I can hear colors now that my drink has kicked in The staff was very nice and welcoming and the spot was clean and neat. I'll def be visiting again ! read more

When I walked up I didn't get any kind of welcoming or smile from the girl at the register, she was very off putting and made it seem like a chore to take my order. Visited this coffee shop while driving through town and absolutely loved the vibe. Looks like the perfect spot for college kids to study, talk and enjoy a creative drink. The barista seemed to be helpful. I overheard her recommending a latte, which sounded great so I figured I'd have a try. Loved it - it was exactly what I was looking for. I bumped off a star because they could make the ordering process a little easier by making the menu more accessible to those in line. My mom did not enjoy her cafe au lait but I think it was more of an ordering/lack of menu review mishap rather than a quality issue. Anyway, I would definitely be back when in town. read more

We were in Columbia for the first time for a wedding and needed a yummy brunch place! After going to two other places that had an hour plus wait, we ended up here. Sadly they had run out of bagels on a Sunday morning except for ONE. Luckily I snagged it and got the jalapeño bagel with egg, bacon, provolone and onion fig jam. The jam was delicious! BF got the sausage egg cheese but he had to sadly get it on wheat bread. He was disappointed. There is also one bathroom for the entire place which was an inconvenience. read more

My favorite coffee shop on campus. Delicious meals, snacks, desserts, and a huge selection of coffee drinks. The staff is always there to make your drink just the way you like it, and there are plenty of places to sit and talk or study. The place is cozy and charming and I miss not living next door to it anymore. Definitely worth a stop by. P.S. something that may be confusing for new customers: it's a house converted to coffee shop. Downstairs straight back is some other kitchen/cafe that has odd hours, I'm not really sure what's going on there - the ordering area for Cool Beans is upstairs! You'll see the stairs just as you walk in the door. read more

This is one of my Favorite coffee shops in the Columbia/USC area. I have had great customer service during each visit. The place has a nice, comfy vibe, even though it is tight when waiting for food. They have a great selection of drinks, pastries, and food. Haven't tried the sandwiches yet, but my personal favorite drink is between the Honey + Oats and the Max Daddy. Will definitely be back for future visits. read more

This place has great coffee, food, and workers. Early this year before the outbreak happened, my partner and I would come for coffee breaks once a week. Sharing some flavored coffee drinks like the Fantasia and their special with the marshmallow-praline along with a slice of coffee or kahlua cake while we chat about our days is going to be a treasured memory of mine. If I haven't won you over to trying this place yet, let me tell you about this one sandwich the Bacon & Blues. Their paninis are served on focaccia which is pretty fresh (I forgot to check if they actually make it there) and it can be some of the best bread you've had. It's served with bacon, spinach, and blue cheese. This is pretty standard but they also add blueberry lavender jam. It takes the sweet saltiness of it and brings it to a new level. You have to try it. read more

Cool Beans Coffee Company is a cute little house that sits off of the campus of USC that has been converted into a cute little coffee shop on the inside. It really reminds me of Fairgrounds Coffee in Norfolk (https://www.yelp.com/biz/fair-grounds-norfolk-2) that has the same concept. I stopped here on two different occasions to get a cup of iced coffee and a slice of cake. The coffee was pretty tasty, and both the coconut and chocolate layer cakes were to die for. Service here was also friendly and helpful on both occasions. Another cool feature of this place is their giant map of the world with two different kinds of stickers. There were circles to mark where you're visiting from (I put mine on Norfolk, VA) and shiny stars to place on another place you would like to visit or where you want to be (I put mine on Oahu, Hawaii). *Fingers crossed for a trip to Hawaii in 2017* lol Overall this is a cool place for USC students and really anyone in Columbia to patronize. read more

There were several empty tables and a few empty seats @ the bar. However, the only two seats together at the bar needed to be cleared from the last patrons that were seated. We stood there for over 20 mins while Jacob continued to walk by never acknowledging us or the fact that we couldn't sit. When he finally cleared the dishes he just walked away, never cleaning the area. When he returned he still never greeted us or apologized for the wait, the mess... nothing. Jacob: What are you having? Me: Well hello... Jacob: Yea... what do you want? Me: Wow... ok. For starters can you please whip off the bar so we can properly have a seat. There is still food residue here from the last customers. ** we get a visible huff** He wipes down the bar and we proceed to order drinks, while he never really speak any more it's all via motions and body language. Amongst ourselves we check in with one another to confirm that we both were feeling very unwelcome. Instantly we decide that we will not be ordering anything additional and will be leaving after this one drink. Which is just as well because Jacob never returns. Someone , whom I can only assume was of a mangement status, asked if Jacob was helpful and we promptly and simultaneously said no and that we would like or bill. She shook her head in utter disbelief and disgust but then she also disappeared. Just so happened that Diamond, whom was on the other side of the bar happen to walk pass. She stopped and asked if we were ok after witnessing our frustration. We explained that we wanted the check and why we were leaving. She was super apologetic and closed out our tab. Her energy literal turned the experience around and if she would have came to our rescue sooner we would have considered staying. Thank you Diamond. Just A Note: Unfortunately, bad first impression because The Grand seems like it may offer a good time with the bowling lanes in the back.

After 14+ year of going to Cool Beans: Tonight, I was confronted by a very rude manager at Cool Beans name Shannon. There was a lighting storm so I moved away from the window. I worked a number of years in law enforcement and have a habit of siting with my back against the wall and observe my surroundings. I got my coffee and like I always do quietly listen to my training material and read my books. I do not play game or make loud noises. I respect other people and do not cause any disturbance. I had moved the table 6 to 8 inch away from the wall. The manager wanted everyone in the building to know she was the boss and think the manager title has went straight to her head. I graduated from USC in 2004 and have not been going as often. Since Shannon is so concerned with safety, why was the food left on the counter uncovered. I observed a fly walking on the mac n cheese in a yellow container. There were the pasta salad left uncovered and other food. Maybe a professional inspector should visit to ensure the safety of the public sense she brought up the topic of safety. Where is the max capacity and is it being enforced? This business is definitely not for handicap customers. Shannon reminds me of a new manager who is on a power trip. Shannon stated that she knew me but could not tell me my name or describe me as she implied. I strongly believe that she has me confused with one of the other 30,000 student at USC. I am 41 not a 18 immature adult. I have a purpose when I do go to Cool Beans. I always clean up and ensure that I put everything back as normal. She spoke every loudly and ensure I heard her tell the workers that if HE give you any trouble, call me immediately. I was like excuse me? You are trying to start an argument and you looking for reasons to start something. She went out of her way to be rude and disrespectful. She continuously raised her voice, which I found to be disrespectful. She definitely made me not feel welcome at Cool Bean. She threw in my face that you know the owner, which I have spoken to her in the past and has been many years ago. (Star Buck Coffee is Cheaper than Cool Bean & Better Customer friendly). I have never been treated like this a place that was suppose to be customer friendly and make you feel welcome. I guess not visiting Cool Bean any more since I will get treated like crap. This was done in front of the worker, which can conclude that you can treat me like crap. I packed up and left before after she had made me feel like I did a worst offense when I was studying for my CPA exam for Monday. I would NOT recommend visiting Cool Bean with Shannon as the manager and WILL Not be visiting anytime soon. There are too many Star Bucks, Panera Breads, Café Strudel and other places that I have been visiting that has treated me with respect and NOT trying to push buttons. If she wants to debate or start an argument, USC has a Lawyer school to get some practice. I wanted to talk with the owner but Shannon was not going to allow me to speak to the owner nor will my message get to the owner. I was told the owner will not be available to end of September and will not give her my cell number. So I hope the message get to her that I was totally humiliated by her manager Shannon. There are proper and improper ways to talking to people. Shannon had a very confrontational attitude from the start as she approached me at the table. I was not loud. I was reading. There was only one other person in the room. There were customer on the other room that heard the manager. The two staff looked like deer in head lights and didn't know why Shannon was being so rude. They did not want to get involved. Shannon, You do not know me. You can think you do but I believe you have me confused with someone else. You can be Queen B at Cool Beans - that does not pay your salary nor the bills when you run off customers. You can only run off so many customer until Cool Beans will be closed. You definitely did not have self respect, you did not respect your title and you definitely did not have any respect for me. Star Bucks on Gervais, Russell House Book Store, Barnes and Noble ALL ROCK. They are friendly and better Coffee than Cool Beans by far & CHEAPER. read more

I have gone to Cool Beans everyday, sometimes twice a day since it is so close to campus and my apt. I also always order the Perfect Redhead a specific way, and it's always $4.13. The employees knew my order before I even ordered I came there so often. Today, however, when the meanest person I have every met ( a redhead girl, BEWARE) took my order she said it was $6. Well, obviously besides being wrong, she was also extremely rude about it. I, of course, waited for her to get off shift when she came by and told me to " get out. they are not a library". Would you order from anyone who said that, was wrong about the order, and the meanest, most spiteful person you ever met? Of course not. Also, besides kicking out regular customers, Cool Beans also allows homeless people to sit there in their establishment and bother girls ( like me) and other patrons. I have mentioned this to their staff twice, and they have done nothing about it. So what can we learn from the Cool Beans establishment? 1. They are inconsistent 2. They allow the meanest, rudest people to work at their establishment ( mainly big redhead girls) 3. They target you if you do not pay the $1 fee when you go into Cool Beans ( regardless if you ALWAYS buy their $4 drink everyday) 4. They treat regular costumers like dirt 5. They are very disorganized 6. They prefer homeless people over regular students PS. Walk a little farther down the vista to Starbucks get more bang for your buck( they have bigger cups, and they taste way better). They also have holiday specials and giveaway prizes and they treat you with decency. Don't go into Cool Beans knowing how awfully they have treated people, how their drinks taste worst and more expensive than Starbucks, how they target people, and how they have some of the worst employes imaginable. read more

I recently visited Cool Beans Coffee Co. in Columbia, SC, and had the pleasure of trying their Iced Nutella Breve. The combination of Nutella with the rich, creamy texture of a breve made for an indulgent and refreshing treat. It was perfectly balanced, not overly sweet, and the hazelnut-chocolate flavor came through without being too heavy. The atmosphere at Cool Beans is laid-back, with a cozy, college-town vibe, making it a great spot to relax, study, or catch up with friends. The staff were friendly and the service was quick, despite the café being busy.
