The Artaban is named after the "fourth" wise man, a priest of the Magi named Artaban who went to see the child Christ, but was delayed by saving another child. During his 33 year search for Christ, he performed many charitable acts. He made it to Jerusalem in time for the crucifixion, but spent his last treasure to pay a ransom to save a girl from slavery. He suffers a fatal accident by a falling tile. Before he dies, a voice tells him "Verily I say unto thee, Inasmuch as thou hast done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, thou hast done it unto Me." (Matthew 25:40) He dies in a calm radiance of wonder and joy. His treasures were accepted, and the Other Wise Man found his King. The only (minor) complaints are that being on the very busy corner of Ocean and Atlantic makes the apartment a little noisy, even with the windows closed. The power grid is outdated and cannot handle the summer demands. Therefore, airconditoners are prohibited and makes the building very hot with fans being the only option for relief. On the plus side, the residents are a very close knit and kind community. The Artaban is walking distance from the beach, Long Beach Arena, Shorline Village, Aquarium of the Pacific, restaurants, shopping, and museums. It is only a few minutes from the airport, CSULB, Long Beach City College, The Queen Mary, and close to the 710, 22, 405, and 605 freeways. The Artaban is located in the historic and scenic East Village Arts District. The area is frequently used for filming movies and commercials. Recently, Acura filmed a commercial for a new SUV. Disney/Buena Vista Studios also used Ocean Blvd for a Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers live action movie. Interesting bit of trivia : The alley behind the Artaban is actually a named street (E. Medio St.). It was used during an episode of Dexter ("Teenage Wasteland" Season 5 Episode 9) Dexter's adopted daughter (Astor) has a friend (Olivia) that is being beaten by her mother's abusive boyfriend (Barry). Dexter arranges to meet Barry under the pretext of bringing Olivia to him. They walk into an alley (E. Medio St.) to talk and Dexter confronts him about hurting Olivia, which Barry denies. Dexter severely beats up Barry and orders him to leave Olivia's mother and never return. He walks away, leaving a terrified Barry lying on the ground. The Long Beach Café (next to the Artaban) was also used as a nightclub for some scenes in the series. The front was redressed with "dancing" and "cocktails" neon signs. Ocean Blvd was also used during a Season 4 scene where the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) is driving in his vintage black Mustang convertible and passes by the International Tower. The Shell gas station on the corner of Ocean and Alamitos Ave is the one Dexter used to fill up the family minivan. *Fun Fact : The planter boxes facing Ocean Blvd form a cross as a reference to The Artaban's Biblical name.

So if you're part of a couple, plan on a one bedroom rental. The building stays remarkably warm and comfortable in Winter; I don't know yet what it will be like in Summer, but suppose it will be nice enough with the cross breezes blowing consistently. All that said, there are some caveats: 1. There is a small problem with roaches. They are small but persistent, so adequate preventative measures must be taken. I recommend keeping trash covered, covering any access points you might find, and using traps like Combat. I also use electronic repellents, but don't know how effective they are. 2. The wiring and plumbing is quite old. It all works but should not be overworked. lol Anyways, don't plug in too many appliances, the fuse-box will overload. 3. The building could use a new coat of paint but I suppose the HOA doesn't want to spend money on that yet. Overall, it's a good place if you keep in mind some expected limitations.

She helped me lock it down quickly before someone else did by having me apply for another unit so that I was already in the system ready to go. She could have easily just put me in the more expensive unit and quickly rented out the other one. However, she was really looking out for me from the get go. Thank you Whittington! Lucas was also great, he set me up with all the information I needed to process my application quickly. He was patient with me when I had multiple questions and some hang up's on my end. He helped guide me through the process and made sure I was informed along the way. Whittington and Lucas worked together as a team to get me a terrific apartment for a great price. They were both professional through and through. They moved me into a roach-infested unit, and getting out was a major headache which they made me pay for. My second unit had dogs barking non-stop for months. Despite repeated requests, management did nothing until I used the courts as leverage. Their "fix" was letting me break my lease rather than addressing the noisy neighbor. The $732 Deposit Battle I had to win a Small Claims lawsuit to finally get my deposit back. Again, bad communication. I eventually had to physically go back and pick up the original 4-month-old check myself. Noise & Building Quality Noise was a dealbreaker for me. You'll hear neighbors above and below due to poor insulation, and the heating system reverberates loudly in winter. Outside, noise from the nearby gym and bars carries straight into the units. Safety & Sanitation The building exterior is unsanitary, specifically the garage, stairwells, and elevator. Accessing the garage requires using an alley that reeks of urine and is constantly occupied by homeless people, the mentally ill, and drug addicts.
