Update: Since posting this review my car HAS BEEN STOLEN from the car port. The first time people tried to steal it, the man I spoke to in the office did not report it to anyone nor did he take down any of my information. The courtesy patrol that management claims will heal is completely dismissive when you call, are offsite, and take a very long time to respond if they do at all. The complex says they have updated lighting, but not in the car ports where multiple cars have been stolen. Management informed me that it was not worth the cost of installing cameras here because they have not reduced incidences of crime in their other properties. Truly a disheartening and disappointing experience that you will be paying TOP DOLLAR if you live here. Have lived here for years and have had some issues but this past year it is at an all time terrible. Cars are getting broken into and even an apartment has gotten broken into. The company has done absolutely nothing to prevent this or make things better or safer. The apartments do not have in unit laundry and people are getting their laundry stolen so I have to drive to a laundry mat anyway. The rent is so expensive and does not include utilities, or any benefit of being a "gated community" because the gate is constantly opening and closing or broke. AVOID!!! read more

The building doesn't justify the cost. Maintenance and janitorial staff are severely understaffed. Management has an attitude and very unprofessional- they also speed through the parking lot when exiting I truly feel sorry for maintenance because even working hard and trying -their effort easkly goes unseen because its's such a large property And let's not forget the break-ins. Security is clearly lacking as units and vehicles continues to have theft Lastly, don't include the rental insurance with your rent unless you verify it covers YOUR personal property as well- they have and will write the policy to only cover their property and you pay the insurance but take the loss if something happens. read more

While the complex looks great on the outside, the actual quality of life and security here is incredibly poor for what you pay. Cars are being stolen straight out of the carports and management frequently sends emails about break-ins. Meanwhile, the security gates are regularly broken and left wide open all night. On top of the safety issues, advertised amenities like the laundry facilities have been completely broken for months. Management prioritizes cosmetics over basic resident safety and maintenance. If you're a Cal State Long Beach student looking for housing from out of town, please read this before signing a lease. I've lived here for a little over two years. When I first moved in, the community was genuinely safe and quiet. That is no longer the case. Safety has fallen off a cliff, and management continues acting like it's not their responsibility. Right now, this is what daily life here looks like: * People sit in parked cars on the property for hours, watching residents come and go * It's common to see people using drugs in vehicles parked right next to the buildings * Someone recently did donuts in the parking lot -- the tire marks are still on the ground * I've personally overheard non-residents outside talking about entering the complex to steal * Incidents happen about every two days now, not occasionally The community feeling is gone. Kids who used to play outside stopped because it doesn't feel safe. Long-term residents are installing their own cameras because management refuses to increase security. Several of my neighbors are looking for ways to break their leases early. Every time residents raise concerns, we get the same response: "Call the cops." For apartments that cost around $2,500/month, pushing security onto the police instead of fixing what's happening on the property is unacceptable. Here's the part that hurts the most: a lot of us moved here because we trusted the branding and the promises, and now this place has become the exact opposite of what students and working residents were led to expect. If you're looking at this place online, it still looks great in the photos -- but that doesn't match what it's like to actually live here now. If you do consider it, tour at night and talk to actual residents, not just the leasing office. I wish someone had written a review like this before I moved here. Long Beach has plenty of good areas and good communities, but this one has gone downhill fast, and students deserve better for their first experience living in the city. read more

First, I want to acknowledge the positives of having lived at Hathaway for one year--specifically, the people who work there. The staff is truly the best part of this community. Cornelius, in the leasing office, is an absolute gem. He is consistently helpful, positive, and responsive, whether by phone or email. It's always a joy to run into him when I'm walking my dog and see his smiling face. Marvin and Morgan from the maintenance team are incredibly hard workers. You constantly see them going from apartment to apartment, addressing issues quickly and professionally. They've even helped me in passing when I needed a quick fix. They are polite, genuine, and reliable. Why I'm leaving after only one year: (BTW the building I'm in is only eight units and since I've been here four have been vacated. I will be the fifth.) 1. I no longer feel safe here. Since September, there have been multiple car break-ins, car thefts, an apartment burglary, and at least two attempted burglaries. Despite being a gated community, homeless individuals regularly enter the property--showering by the pool, dumpster diving, and parking for days at a time. A neighbor recently reported hearing "pop pop" at 1:00 a.m., followed by someone yelling, "She's shooting at me." On the community app, residents frequently post about these issues. I've also seen several people wandering the property who appear to be under the influence. It's unclear whether they're visiting someone or casing the area, but it's unsettling. There is a courtesy patrol, but they are not on-site. You must call, and then just hope they show up. I've called several times and only receive an automated confirmation--no way to know if they ever actually arrived. 2. Dog policies are not enforced. Although the website lists restricted breeds, those dogs are everywhere. There is also no clear limit on how many dogs an apartment can have. My neighbors had four pitbulls left outside on the balcony day and night, barking nonstop. I was repeatedly woken up at 1:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m., and 4:00 a.m. by endless barking and the sound of dogs jumping off the walls--likely trying to escape poor living conditions. I provided months of video and photographic documentation to management, who said they had passed it on to their legal team. Ultimately, I contacted the SPCA myself--and only then did the barking finally stop. 3. ""feels closer to nature than big-city bustle" translates to insects everywhere. Ants, mosquitoes, spiders--constant. 4. "Smoke-free" is not enforced either. The smell of weed is frequent, especially from groups of teenagers hanging out and smoking by the pool. When my renewal notice arrived--with an increase of more than $100 per month--I had already decided I was leaving. Honestly, I wouldn't stay even if the rent were lowered. I truly hope conditions improve for current and future tenants, because no one should have to live with these ongoing issues. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. read more

It has almost been a month since I have moved into the Hathaway Apartments. I wanted to wait long enough to get a good feel of the community, apartments, customer service, etc. I have determined that I would give a 3 star rating over all. I love my unit; it was newly renovated and a good amount a space. I love having a balcony, vaulted ceilings, hardwood flooring, updated appliances and 2 assigned parking spaces. Brandi in the front office is also very pleasant, helpful, and kind. However, cleanliness and the upkeep of an apartment complex is very important to me. This is what has caused me to knock off 2 stars. Some of the tenants here do not take care of the outskirts of their unit (blinds falling off, hanging clothes off of their balcony, storing furniture on the balcony). Which I am sure is prohibited. There is so much trash on the grounds inside and outside of the community, as if tenants just throw their trash on the ground and walk away. I come from an apartment complex where the groundskeepers were consistently ensuring the apartment was clean and presentable. So this is very disappointing. The Hathaway Apartments are nestled in between other apartment complexes. I take walks every morning around the block, and there are some things I've noticed since moving in. There are individuals living in their car, in the visitor parking. I noticed a man getting dressed outside of his vehicle during my walk. Something else I noticed, is that there is no trash/littering in front of any of the neighboring complexes. But as soon as you pass by Hathaway Apartments, theres trash in the streets and on the sidewalk. (Photos attached) Also, the trash dumpsters inside the complex are always full of furniture and mattresses ( which is prohibited, according to the apartment handbook). The laundry room, need better upkeeping as well. I read a previous review from an former tenant, and they mentioned Hathaway rents to Section 8. I am unsure if this is true, but I would not be surprised given what I have seen since I moved in. My feedback, would be for Hathaway to take more pride in the the community, ensuring cleanliness, and holding tenants accountable when they are not following apartment guidelines. read more

The Hathaway apartments have potential if they would sell it to another property management company that can do a better job in regulating and maintaining this apartment complex. The current company rents to Section 8 residents and offers Airbnb Units . My co-worker lives in the Hathaway Apartments but that's why she is moving out. They increased the rent !! Yet some of the renters/residents hang outside of the entry/exit gates smoking cigarettes and marijuana and drinking alcohol. Many Renters do not pick up the after their large dogs. The insane amount of dogs feces left all over inside and outside of the Hathaway Apartment Complex is unbelievable! The element has changed. Unfortunately the property has declined,the landscaping has declined and the customer service has declined! read more

From start to finish meaning from the beginning of my application process all the way up to move In day this team at hathaway have been outstanding. They kept me informed about the entire process. And the apartment and community is great so far. Corneilus and Melissa were always friendly and helpful. And the maintenance team seemed to handle all my concerns prior to move in,and ive never had an issue with them prompt and steadfast on any issue, although there aren't many. I love the food truck Thursdays when we get a complimentary food truck to come by on special Thursdays just for the residency. read more

I lived at the Hathaway for nearly two years, moved here during the pandemic, and it's been a good run, I enjoyed the safety, quiet, forest like environment of living here. It is certainly one of the biggest apartment complexes in the city with other 600 units (like a small town). It's got two pools and two jacuzzi. These were closed during the Covid lockdowns however, but enjoyed using them when they reopened. My only gripe is the units are quite quite small at 509-580 sq ft, there's no in unit washer/dryer given the small size of the units, there are some washrooms in the complex but quite spaced out so I'd have to drive to those places but they accept PayRange which is nice, no coins thankfully. Safety is so-so given that we're near an national guard base, there are occasionally homeless people on the street, dog poop, and sometimes incidents of theft or guys being perverts have happened, though thankfully I've never had my car broken into or anything stolen, no incidents with anyone either. This apartment is great for people who live alone and have office jobs, ideally college students, or couples who don't have a lot of stuff, given the small size of the units. There are some two bedroom units available which might be better. Also we have food truck Thursdays, yum!!!! I've moved as I've found a more luxurious apartment, but Hathaway has been good to me for the time I lived there. Hope it'll be good for you too. read more

Just moved into the community in June 2022. Looked at other spots and picked this spot thinking the community was safe (since it's gated). As a tenant, you have the option to download the mobile community app called 'My Equity'. Here, you can request services, pay your rent, and discuss concerns amongst other tenants/neighbors. The two months I have been here, the front gate has been broken three different times, I've also seen a tenant report a home burglary, many cars being vandalized, catalytic converters stolen, and as of today, a tenant said they saw two masked men with bats walking in the early morning (photos attached). I had just been here a month when the home burglary happened. I emailed the leasing office and expressed that I was uncomfortable and to see what safety measures they had in line for their tenants. The reply I got back was not at all what I expected: "Unfortunately crime has no zip code, so we cannot guarantee your safety unfortunately. If you see something out of the ordinary please give the Long Beach Police Department a call." Talk about losing faith in the leasing team. SMH! There's been an uptick in crimes so there should be some kind of security. This place offers no security at all. Management claims they have courtesy patrol onsite, but I have never seen one and many tenants who have been here longer, has made the same complaints on the mobile app. The mobile app does absolutely nothing for the management team and honestly, that's quite okay. I would rather share my concerns here for the public to see as opposed to the "My Equity" app where concerns are hidden from future tenants. Hathaway is not safe. Please do your research. read more

There's been ants in the apartment which have become a very frustrating concern. I've come to the realization that this is my least favorite equity residential apartments and to be fair the others got a 4 to 5 star rating on Yelp from me. I'm giving this a star because I've talked with management and they've been more responsive lately to the concerns I have to make known like the ants and neighbors leaving trash in the walkway of the stairs. That does not however save the overall experience quite just yet. I'll update this review again before the end of my lease in December but truthfully I'm ready to get out and if they waived the pricy transfer fee I would already be getting out of here and into another Equity apartments and honestly just delete this review altogether. Since these type of exceptions aren't being made then it is just what it is. The honest review continues to grow and I'll update more from here. We are in love with Hathaway gated community. We were fortunate to get a unit on the 3rd floor so we could admire the beauty of the trees and hills. We are currently on spring break and were surprised at how quiet it is. We hung out by the pool today and enjoyed the laughter of young girl playing with her dad. One of the benefits I found very appealing was the Equity Online ir Mobile Application that can be used to request a service call, make a payment, post on the community bulletin board, and read announcements from the office. The neighbors we've met so far are very welcoming and friendly, and I can't say enough about my lease agent Richard from Equity and his colleagues Asia and Ashley, they did everything right. The maintenance crew is also on their A game (thanks Cesar). read more

I recently became a resident at the Hathaway in Apr 2023. I visited the area several times during the week and weekend to get a better feel for the area. I met this wonderful professional lady who assisted me through the entire move in process, her name is Melissa. Melissa was very pleasant and seemed to always be in a happy mode. She was humorous, courteous, and always greeted me warmly with a smile. Melissa was very knowledgeable in all conversations that we engaged in and made me feel very special. She was meticulous with her words as I observed her interaction with other clients using the word residence instead of tenants. I was very much impressed when she handed me the keys to my unit and stated, "Welcome Home." These apartments were okay prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now they are a rip-off. The amenities were closed with no compensation to residents for over two-months during the least dangerous part of the pandemic. Now that the virus is objectively more widespread, and hence the contagion risk is higher, the management have re-opened the amenities (pools, hot-tubs) but with arbitrarily limited hours that make it almost impossible for people with essential jobs to enjoy them. Finally, the community rules regarding amenity usage are repeatedly violated with no response, representing a safety risk to all due to the large groups of people. The management is resistant to any feedback and not helpful. read more

Actually, I was a bit nervous with all the negative reviews. Please know that went there because I'm looking for a new place. So far, to what I saw the apartment complex was decent, clean. Find it a bit odd with the gate been open - however later on explained by Katey that these closed during the hours from 6p to 6a. What I like about Hathaway is the fact that their units have central A/C and it includes all essential appliances. I like the fact of linoleum from the door entrance to kitchen. I would not recommend living here at all! My partner and I have been living here for about a year and people smoke weed constantly in their apartment and it travels through the vents into our own apartment. I get it people smoke weed and I'm not against it, but smoking in your apartment and not caring about other people is super annoying and selfish. Just because they want to smoke and smell like weed doesn't mean other civilians have to deal with that. We pay our rent and it isn't cheap! To make it worse Hathaway claims it is a smoke free environment and it's isn't! We have called multiple times and now Brandi and Melissa are telling us that they cannot "enforce it" so then why false advertise the community to be smoke free? It's super frustrating because they are doing nothing to resolve this issue and now we have to be the ones to move out when it's clearly stated in the lease and the website that this is a smoke free community. These apartments are trash and I wouldn't move here, unless you're okay with your apartment and furniture to reek of weed. In all honesty, it wasn't like this when we moved in about a year and 4 months ago but now reading the most recent reviews on here with bad ratings apparently Hathaway rents to section 8 and now it all makes perfect sense. On the bright side, to all the pot heads out there you should definitely move here because Hathaway won't do anything to you for smoking in your apartment. Just ridiculous. read more

I've alwaya like the Hathaways, even yeara ago when I lived in LB. It's a huge, gated complex. Apartments are average size, but always well maintained. I love the tile flooring in the kitchen and entryway. They have central A.C., a fireplace, 2 spots in the underground carport, and small balcony. Some apartments come with a nice view; others face the parked military vehicles and facility. There's also swimming pools and jacuzzis on the premise. Kids can get a bit loud during the summer months for those who live right above and/or next to the pool area. Gates stay open during the day for guests, but there is street parking on the outside. Rent is not cheap and tenants are also required to pay renter's insurance. read more
