What you need to know about me is that I write on nice paper. Whether I am thanking you for a lovely dinner or cursing you all the way out, I like to scribble my sentiment on fine paper. That being said - I was drawn to Copenhaver. This place is a veritable bastion of gorgeous stationary! I was in search of Crane and Co. stationary, as I was running embarrassingly low. The gentlemen who work here know their stuff. They were able to recommend some beautiful cards to me. I walked out with 3 boxes of amazing Crane and Co. cards. Now, don't get your LaPerlas (which is what I would expect a woman of discerning taste to be wearing) in a bunch -- this place is a little pricey. This is a GOOD stationary shop where you'll take the advice of the staff because they are impeccably dressed and very well-spoken. This isn't your local mall's Hallmark store run by some well-meaning-yet-highly-unqualified teenager. Trust that on that next aisle, you won't be seeing droopy eyed teddy bears holding hearts that read, "I wuv you." And no - there are no singing cards here. To be rid of all that tackiness, you must pay. And pay you will, here at Copenhaver. read more

I love Copenhaver - a stalwart, tasteful, old-school stationer offering custom invitations and stationery along with a nice retail selection of cards, paper, journals and other accessories for people who, like me, still send handwritten correspondence. Letterpress and correspondence (flat) cards my favorites, and I shop here first when looking for the newest designs from Crane. The store is usually well-stocked with boxed notecards that are thermographed or bordered. In addition to Crane, they stock Vera Wang and a few European brands. Copenhaver is also my first stop on my annual hunt for the perfect holiday card. The quality of the service varies. Thoron is unfailingly pleasant and helpful. There was an older woman who worked there who once insulted me, unprovoked; I haven't seen her in awhile so she may not work there anymore. Though there is a place in my heart for other paper stores, Copenhaver's classic elegance makes it my favorite. Unlike Paper Source, it doesn't devote space to "crafty" items, and it eschews all the trendy, pink-and-purple fluff that dominates at Papyrus. I took one star off my rating because they could offer a stronger selection of letterpress items - but that's my peccadillo. When I'm ready to order my first custom stationery, I know that Copenhaver is where I'll go. read more

When you need to impress (or to get past the dissertation dragon lady), you really do have to shell out for the good stuff: 100% cotton, acid-free, archival quality PAPER. I will settle ("... in this economy ...") for 24# rather than 32#, but that is my sole concession to frugality. After calling 30 stationary stores in the DC-MD area, I found just one store with Crane's Crest AND Crane's thesis paper in stock -- Copenhaver! And they were kind enough to hold the paper behind the counter for pickup. Five stars for service, five stars for selection! read more

Copenhaver has a small(ish) but very thoughtful selection of paper goods and writing supplies. I went in searching for thank you cards, and came out with a stack of ten elegant cotton paper note cards. While I didn't find exactly what I was looking for (i.e. whimsical yet conservative thank you cards to send to guys) I am happy with the note cards, and will use them for a few different purposes. The woman who helped me was great -- she had a few ideas for me, and even volunteered some information about the history of the store. Apparently they've been on Connecticut Ave for over 100 years. Who knew! Overall, I'd describe Copenhaver as a store for serious correspondents. It has a certain old-school appeal, and doesn't devote much space to the frilly, trendy items you'll find in some other stationery shops. read more

Your first warning about this store should be the inch of dust layering the shelves and the inadequate variety of products on them. The storekeeper's hyperbolic politeness covers a profound belligerence, so I suggest not tipping him over the edge and risking rage by asking for such unreasonable things as meeting the times they promise to have your order ready, holding them to their promise of calling a supplier to see if more product is available, or expecting that they'll refund your credit card within 5 days when they are unable to obtain the product for which you've already paid. The owner who "assisted" me seemed to forget to do any task he was left with besides that which could be accomplished immediately (i.e.: ringing up an item already in the store). His lack of adeptness in using technology was also apparent, so I couldn't imagine what it would be like to entrust this store to design and order any invitation of importance on a strict timeline. It is entirely obvious that the owners of Copenhaver do not know how to run a business or deal with customers properly. That's a shame, because I always endeavor to patronize locally-owned businesses over chain stores. When it comes to stationary, however, I highly suggest you check out Paper Source or Papyrus in Georgetown - or even Staples for plain envelopes, etc. That's where I eventually went. You'll get proper customer service, stores that believe in keeping their promises and deadlines, a genuine and knowledgeable staff, and a far, far greater variety of stock on hand - all of the same quality. read more

The service and selection can be a bit hit or miss, but to give them the benefit of the doubt, I'll go with 4 stars. I often pop in for work - and Copenhaver's now my go-to place for Crane stationery. The staff can be very helpful (especially an older gentleman, so kind and knowledgeable) or they can be short and somewhat cold. The benefits of going here: 1.) Location is perfect walking distance from my office 2.) Prices are comparable to Papyrus or other small stationery stores in the region. 3.) The store is small, but stocked to the brim with paper goods. I can usually find what I'm looking for. 4.) They stock an admirable variety of Crane products, which is all I'm allowed to use for fundraising event purposes (why? I haven't the slightest idea). This allows me to keep it interesting when writing my endless invitations. read more

I came here searching for some nice postcards of DC versus the many tacky ones I've seen in the drugstore. They certainly have them here but you'll have to search to find some reasonably priced ones. I'd definitely come back here for stationary or fancy invitations as this seems like the place to do that. The space has a very Washington je ne sais quo about it. Service seems a little bit uptight though for some reason. read more

I STRONGLY encourage you to take your business elsewhere. While one of the older associates at this location is extremely nice, I encountered extreme rudeness from another associate. The staff had quite a bit of trouble understanding my needs (I think due to a lack of technical proficiency) and then criticized me and accused me of describing my preferences "as clearly as mud." What ever happened to professionalism? There are other stationers who have staff who are much more technically proficient who will not be rude to you if you raise concerns. Stay away! Also, I agree with an earlier comment that the prices are much higher than they should be. Copenhaver needs to be brought into the 21st century. read more

I love this stationary store and everyone is always very polite and eager to help you out. I think it would be nice if they had a bigger selection of more interesting and current occasion cards. The ones that they have here are a little dated and boring. Some are funny and quirky, though. read more

These people are BEYOND. It's a tiny place, but with the most amazing staff. I was there a few weeks ago getting a card for my boss that was leaving. I decided that I wanted to write at the shop (they have a cute little desk where you can sit and write your thoughts). My handwriting is horrible so it didn't take long for me to mess up. Sensing my distress, one of the gentleman brought me another card..FREE OF CHARGE. I've been a couple of more times and they have offered the best advice about card buying etiquette (there really is a lot to do this). Amazing folks! read more

Excellent quality, but insanely expensive. Their designers to do a great custom job and the staff is friendly. If you have a specific vision in mind they are more than willing to help. However, be ready to walk out with a much lighter wallet. read more

This is a great local business and a great place to get wrapping paper, birthday & other occasion cards, or stationary and invitations. They also have fun holiday-themed small gift items to match the season. I bought all the stuff I needed to throw my friend's wedding shower here and ended up getting lots of compliments on the invitations. You just need to remember that they close at 4pm on Saturdays! read more

Came in here to look for a special card for the in-laws, and had a wonderful time browsing their beautiful selection. Although they are a bit pricey, I am a sucker for nice stationery, and you will definitely find that here. I've been back many times since - they have a nice range of simple and elegant to ornate and colorful. The owner was incredibly friendly the first time I went, too. He was excited to show me some new sets after seeing what I liked, and as a bonus even offered me some of his fresh fruit he had just bought. read more

I came here to get a gift for someone who happens to be an English major, so I figured he was really into fancy paper products and pens. For a great price, I was able to get him a really nice ball point pen and an English leather-bound journal. My friend loved the gift, and I'm actually planning to go back to get some a nice writing utensil and some paper products for myself. The staff there really know what they are talking about. According to the wise elderly man at the counter, the store has been around for 180 years! Hopefully they will be around for another 200. read more

I've been buying stationery here for years and LOVE this place. Perhaps the best customer service of any store in D.C.--the staff bends over backwards to be helpful and knows exactly where you can find, say, a baby shower card for twins, or a certain type of thank-you note. If they don't have something in stock, they can tell you exactly when they'll be getting it. And they have a great selection of everything--enough choices to find something that catches your eye, but not so many that it's overwhelming. It's a pleasure to shop here--the staff always puts a smile on my face. read more
