Had a late brunch in here Saturday morning. It's a tiny little place that had an upbeat feel and was bustling like any other brunch service at local diner. The service was great as well as the energy because Mexico v. Korea was on the TV. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and a Bloody Mary. This place is fantastic. 24 hour Cuban diner/bar, $7 cocktails for happy hour and Tres Leches cake is on the menu...what more could you ask for?! I came here for happy hour and had a blast. Very extensive food menu and everything sounds so good. Deciding what to order was probably the most difficult decision I made that day. I ended up getting the Fish Tacos (crispy flounder, chipotle cole slaw, guacamole). Portions were a bit small but reasonable for the price I guess. The fish was so crispy and flavorful. Cole slaw guacamole was on point. For dessert I obviously got the Tres Leches cake. I know my desserts and this was super duper delicious. Even my Latina friend thought it was good. It wasn't overly sweet and had the right texture. Finally, the drinks! $7 cocktails until 7pm. One of the drinks I got was La Borracha. Apparently, it means drunk female? What's better than a 24-hour restaurant? I've been here for brunch, lunch and dinner before. All good experiences. First off - their white sangria is great to start with. It has passion fruit in it, along with blueberries. Pretty refreshing. I had their pernil main course - it was cool, just needed a lil more sauce so I asked for mojo; problem solved. The yuca that accompanies it is sure to melt in your mouth. The steak/fries/rice combo is good too, just spicy. A co-worker and I dined here after work to catch up on girl talk and to take advantage of their happy hour. The taco appetizers was BANGIN'!! It was made with strips of beef ribs, definitely a first for me. Came in here late night after a concert on Hudson River Park. I wasn't hungry, but my friend was so I tagged along so I could make an honest "check in." I scanned the menu for a super light snack and the first items to catch my eyes were the Mazorca, and the Mac & Cheese with Chicharron. (I hope I used the oxford comma and ampersand well enough to evade confusion). I ordered the Mazorca (corn on the cob with some fixings) and my friend unreluctantly decided to share the Mac & Cheese along with his entree. The Mazorca was spot on. The corn was cooked perfectly. Not a soggy kernel on the cob, firm texture, and still well prepared. The Mac & Cheese with Chicharron took me by surprise. The chicharrones tasted like pork rinds from a bag, which isn't a far cry from actual chicharrones, to be honest wasn't what I was expecting. The Mac & Cheese itself more than made up for the slight, but overall was not a bad dish by any means. Having never been to Cuba, it did have a very Cuban feel from what I can gather from movies and the media. I finished off my "snack" with a Cortadito, which is "Cuban Coffee" or espresso. Been craving a cubano sandwich for the longest. Saw the majority of good posts raving about the sandwich and they're right. It's honestly pretty good, I gave it four stars because I wish they'd put some more ham( next time I order I'll definitely be asking for that ) and also wished the French fries were better. This was an accident. I didn't plan on coming here. I just finished a 5 mile run and needed to eat. A few places that I had considered in the Meatpacking District are now closed. And I was not in the mood for the food court style of Chelsea Market. I've walked by Coppelia's several times over the years, but never gave it a second thought. Until today. What a pleasant surprise. As someone who has been in this restaurant industry for over 20 years, I tend to notice and appreciate little things that others do not. Like the staff's attentiveness. The presentation of the dishes. However,the bathroom needed to be cleaned up a bit. I started with the Ceviche Limeno (flounder, aji amerillo, red onion, cilantro, Maiz cancha , sweet potato ). I haven't had ceviche in ages, so the crunch of the corn kernels was unexpected yet welcomed. My entree was a Red Snapper special that my post workout body appreciated. I don't know who or where they get their cherry tomatoes from, but they need to keep it a secret. I also had a glass of rose and a mango caipirinha. As a former bartender, I understand that a cocktail DOESN'T need to super strong or overly sweet. So, this cocktail HIT THE SPOT! A sophisticated Cuban diner with amazing food. I grew up eating Cuban food and Coppelia does a really great job of elevating my favorite recipes. If I can provide any advice, don't skip out on the ox tail. It's a stable of Cuban cuisine and Coppelia's handling of it in every dish has been perfection. I highly recommend the Rabo Encendido, the Ox tail empanadas, actually all of the empanadas, and the Mac and chicharron. That said I do think the cocktails were a little lacking. I arrived at Coppelia as a part of a greater taco-crawl, and was pleasantly suprised by the huge quantity, and quality, of non-taco items on the menu. The false window panes with artificial sunlight pouring around the edges and through the cracks really put me in a comfortable, ready to eat mood. Good thing the food delivered! Ok, this is a Cuban diner that serves quick 'cuban' food. I had the arroz con pollo and I swear it came out tasting and looking like chicken fried rice from your local Chinese wok restaurant. It was good and tasty but definitely not your traditional Cuban fare. They also had a Cuban dish on the menu that had lo mein in it. Perhaps this is a Chinese -Cuban fusion restaurant. Last night was my 1st time visiting this restaurant and it did not disappoint!! The food was excellent and our waiter was above and beyond attentive it was a little crowded when I got there so the hostess told me to sit at the bar which I did while my party of 3 and I waited for our table which we were told would be ready in approximately 20 minutes. I was sitting at the bar looking at the menu in anticipation of what I was about to order when the hostess came back over and told me to "get up" that she had 2 other patrons who needed my seats. I was completely shocked that she would be this disrespectful as I have never had such a thing happen in any establishment anywhere !! How dare she make me get up from a seat to give it to other people? The couple did not know what was going on they were completely sorry and also embarrassed by her actions I told them no please take the seats I insist !! The one star is not for the food since it was actually good. The service however was horrible! There were four of us that stopped in after a show for a late bite. We were seated right away, but no one came to take our order for 25 minutes. We asked a couple of employees to send our waiter, but that request went unnoticed. We finally get a waiter after a friend complains to the useless manager. He was nearby clearly not doing his job since he was too busy on his phone while holding up a wall. Our order was taken, but when served mine was missing. I thought maybe it was on its way. Time just kept passing by and we inquired about it. Apparently the waiter is hard of hearing because he did not note my order after it was repeated three times. That was not acceptable and we voiced it to the manager. The right thing for him to do was comp my meal, which he did. Too little, too late though. We had such a good time at the show to end up getting frustrated and annoyed. For me service is right up there with good food; it goes hand in hand. Needless to say we won't be eating there ever again. read more

When I read that this place is "overpriced" or like a "hot dog" stand I have to laugh and wonder about the people who post that stuff. It's one of the best places to come to eat latin food downtown. The prices are better than anywhere! specially of the quality of the food, ingredients they serve. The bartenders are amazing, very crafty, and in the 7 yrs that I've been frequenting, I've never had a bad experience, other than from patrons that become unruly. It's a 24 hr place, and it unique. The ambiance is great; it's cute and I love the strip of tissue paper and flower collages on the wall. There's a warm yellow light emanating from the walls, and the dining area feels very homey. The food choices are difficult; everything sounds really good, but unfortunately, the execution doesn't come across quite as superbly. I got the omelette coppelia with chorizo, manchego, and roasted peppers. Considering the first two (amaaazing) ingredients, I expected this omelette to blend perfectly in my mouth. Unfortunately, I barely tasted the chorizo - I guess they chopped it into very tiny bits - and the omelette tasted kind of oily and cheesy in a less-than-appetizing way. However, I was really hungry, so I ate everything. The home fries were good, but overall, I felt that I was kind of forcing myself to eat, rather than thoroughly enjoying the meal. I did get a free iced tea with the Yelp check-in, and it was unsweetened. They had sugar on the side to sweeten it, but it was very plain on its own. Overall, I was just kind of disappointed. Casual diner with great service. Busy and noisy on a Friday night. (It's a little quieter near the front.) We arrived around 7:30ish and only had to wait 5-10 min. for a booth. I had the yummy Arepas plus Yucca Fries - both very crispy and satisfying! It's not clear on the menu, but the "Deluxe" add-on option actually applies to both the Burgers and Sandwiches, so that's what I ended up with. But if you want a larger serving of Yucca Fries, be sure to order it as a separate side item. There's also a Yelp Check-In offer for a free fountain soda or iced tea. read more

Great spot in Chelsea for a nice lunch. Really enjoyed our Pernil and Churrasco, the pernil in particular. Simple, tasty, excellent. A bit disappointed by the waffles for our kids, promising a berry salad on top - there were roughly 5 pieces of bruised berry slices adorning the waffles. An actual full berry salad would have pushed our meal to a 5, as would slightly friendlier and family-considerate service (more below). Note to the hostess: I don't care how busy you are, you don't hold the door open for a 2 year old whose parent isn't directly behind her when your restaurant is on 14th street, period. You also just apologize when it is pointed out to you...you don't glare and roll your eyes with an exasperated sigh. I was 3 feet behind her trying to get past a large group coming in against us (they didn't see her and just pushed in between us) and was helpless to stop you from releasing her to the wilds of Chelsea. I really enjoyed my experience here. Luckily, I came at happy hour before the rush came in, so I was able to get seated promptly. I love that the cocktails are only $7 for happy hour - I tried a few of them and they were really well balanced and really delicious - my fave was the Cuban margarita. Just dawned on me that I haven't written an update in the 1.5 years since my 1st visit. This place still has it. I've expanded my regular order to include the Chicarron Chopped. On the menu it looks like a regular chopped salad but I swear the roast pork adds some a flavor that makes it out of this world. And they might add a little lime or citrus zest. I've also tried their soups. From the standard to sopa del dia - none disappoint. As it comes to cocktails - the Hemingway Royal is delicious. Not heavy at all although you see it includes dark rum. The ginger makes it light. If you like beer from other countries, you will not be disappointed. I'm a Quilmes fan (they carry it!) but they also have beer from Peru, Mexico, etc. I have not tried the various healthy options - quinoa, kale - and the extended sandwich and burger menu. I don't know how they keep adding items to the menu and I can still read it. They must be printing on bigger paper. This is still one of my go to joints. No question.
