This weekend I visited Mercado Little Spain with a friend and was very excited to enjoy tapas for lunch. Unfortunately, this place left a bit to be desired. Usually, when I visit tapas-style restaurants, all of the little plates are brought out together so that guests can enjoy various bites of food at the same time. Here, each tiny plate was brought out individually, and the next dish was not served until the first was finished. It was slightly bizarre in this sense. This would not have bothered me as much if the dishes were top-notch. Again, I was left slightly disappointed. My friend and I ordered marinated olives, Spanish shrimp, paella, and octopus (pulpo) with mashed potatoes. For a beverage, I enjoyed the cava sangria. The olives and sangria were absolutely delicious. There was a variety of both massive and tiny olives with a unique flavor scale. The sangria was refreshing and bubbly. Generally, I love octopus, but this one lacked a bit of flavor. The strangest part was the paella. I always order paella because of the seafood medley. Here, the dish was with chicken, and almost had a taste of Asian food/soy sauce. It was not my favorite. Our waiter was such a gem. He was so pleasant and combined with the upscale food court atmosphere, the environment was great. I just wish that the food had been a little higher quality, especially given our location in NYC and the prices on par with such area. My friend and I had lunch at Mercado Little Spain. The concept was really interesting. It's basically a food hall where you can either sit in a dining room and have staff bring food to you, or order from any of the vendors yourself and eat wherever you want in the space. Found Mercado Little Spain while looking for a Oyamel whose entrance was inside the food hall. I wish I was hungrier because I would have loved to try the different goodies from the various vendors. After dining at the restaurant, I did try one place in the food hall, Bar Manolo. I ordered the Bocata Serranito and it was good. Mercado Little Spain is a Spanish focused food hall by Jose Andres, like Eataly to Italy. Plenty of seating and it looked like there were a variety of options. We enjoyed this Mercado during our time in NYC. The tapas bar was a fun experience and the tapas were really good. We were bummed that a few of the tapas were sold out even though we weren't there super late in the evening. On another day we also tried the burger place (just ok), churro place (good), ice cream place (good), greens place (just ok), and the paella place (pretty good). It was a lively place and a good spot to watch a soccer match (we were there during the World Cup). read more

I had a chocolate xuxo from here the other day and it was delicious! The xuxo was reminiscent of a croissant, but so much sweeter as it was covered in sugar, and the chocolate filling was extremely creamy, unlike the solid chocolate I typically find in a croissant. I'd also come a separate time for tapas with my partner. While it was pricey, it was nice to have Spanish tapas and enjoy glasses of wine without feeling rushed or like we needed to order a full meal. It's tucked away in a corner of The Shops at Hudson Yards. You take two escalators down to a rather nice space. There are several food shops downstairs including a nice dessert shop called Que Sweet. They have ice cream and baked goods. You order at the counter and they give you the items. You have to find your own seating. We got a chocolate tort, chocolate ice cream, and a croissant filled with chocolate cream. It all was good but the favorite was the ice cream which was smooth and chocolate-y. The tort was the next best being thick and rich. The cream filled croissant wasn't bad but in comparison to the other two was small and not as interesting. read more

I'm a big fan of Jose Andres so no surprise that Mercado Little Spain does it all perfectly! In my opinion you can really tell that they put a lot of time and effort to create a nice casual upscale eatery to try some of his best dishes and to feel like you are in Spain! We started off wandering the area realizing we could go to each booth and create a fabulous meal ourselves or choose to have a sit down, which is the route we went since we wanted to enjoy our sangria. After our meal with crispy bread, meat, cheese, shrimp and paella we decided to step out to the "market" for dessert...which the cinnamon croissant was to die for! My first time at Hudson Yards, we popped into this little gem for a bite. It's on the street level & kinda in the cut but we found it from the side of the shops we came in on. There were so many options but nothing to overwhelming, from cured sandwiches to salads, seafood to paella. Churros, croquetas, burgers flatbreads & tapas. Its a literal Spanish market. A foodies dream. The atmosphere was a bit busy given there were many food vendors, people were coming & going, the staff kept the table tops clean & there is plenty of seating. We stopped by Mercado Little Spain at Hudson Yards to sample a few things. For those unfamiliar, it is a sprawling food market concept created by celebrity chef José Andrés, designed to bring the flavors and atmosphere of Spain to New York City. We tried ice cream from Qué Sweet!, churros from the Churros kiosk, and paella from Paella al Plato. The ice cream was the highlight -- genuinely good. The paella was decent, nothing remarkable but solid enough. The churros were the low point and did not really deliver. Overall the food was so-so. The concept is ambitious and the space is visually impressive, but my honest take is that this feels more like a curated tourist experience than anything authentically Spanish. Hudson Yards has been working hard to establish itself as a destination, and Mercado Little Spain feels like part of that effort -- designed to draw people in rather than blow them away. (Lola's Greens) Chicken salad had absolutely no flavor at all - it was just greens, onions, dry flavorless chicken, and mushrooms. The mushrooms were the only good part - those were cooked nicely. But even then, why are we putting warm mushrooms in a cold salad? They did put sauce, but not enough, and it was too liquidy, so a lot of it went to the bottom. I ended up going back home and just adding my own sauce so I could finish the rest of the bowl. I mean, the quality was fine; it wasn't outright bad food. But it sure wasn't worth $17. read more

The burger, the patatas bravas, the sandwiches with jamón ibérico, octopus, tortilla española, wine, everything we have tried has been sooo good!! Very authentic and even though is always full and some times it is hard to find a table, it is worth it. The main restaurant is gone, and several individual spots inside -- like Leña and Spanish Diner -- have already closed. What remains feels increasingly empty, disorganized, and lacking the vibrant atmosphere it once had. Staff engagement has dropped noticeably, and service has become inconsistent at best. The food is not necessarily the problem, it is the poor quality of the service. A recent visit to La Barra sadly confirmed this trend. What used to be a lively, informal bar now feels more like a poorly run cafeteria. A simple request to charge my phone turned into a big issue, with staff citing "liability" and concerns over fairness to other guests -- a small, solvable problem made unnecessarily complicated. Worse still was the attitude of the manager, who handled the situation in an aggressive and dismissive way, speaking over me and creating a confrontational tone that was uncomfortable and uncalled for. It pains me to say this, but based on the current state of things, I wouldn't recommend a visit to Mercado Little Spain. read more

I also purchase a pastry from the bakery counter which was $8, it wasa tart vanilla cream with slivered alomonds I would highly reccomend. TLDR: In the back of Mercado lies Mar, a restaurant worth going to. Seafood-forward small plates. Petite portions, expensive prices but then again; this is Hudson Yards. Go splurge and discover something else besides gambas al ajillo. We had almost given up at Mercado but figured we'd try Mar. I wish we had just eaten here only but it's probably good we went through the rest of the space first. We'd have probably spent 3x as much if we only ate here. The portions I expected to be small but everything tasted really great. The Atun Rojo Balfego was good, very refreshing this wonderful balance of acidity. We also tried the Bienmesabe Canario con Mojo Rojo, they were these lovely petite fish cakes almost. The little dab of pimenton aioli was perfect. The star for me though was the Albondigas con Sepia y Gamba Roja. Meatballs made with cuttlefish? That was super unique. The sauce was incredibly shrimpy in a good way, it's no surprise they give you that crusty slice of bread to mop up all those flavors. Our first trip back to Mar in Mercado Little Spain since pandemic shutdown. Had started coming regularly in 2019-2020. It took a while for them to reopen. We happened to visit Little Spain and were pleasantly surprised, happy to have them back! Location is still fresh, lively, and beautiful with a casual elegance. The fish is still impeccably fresh and the dishes are all good. We picked up on a change in overall approach and menu offerings, so we asked our server. We were told they lost their top-tier chef during Covid. To adapt, they adopted a tapas-based format and reopened with a fast turnaround, pared-back menu. The prices overall are slightly higher, in addition to things like bread by request only for a small charge. However, our lunch was a great experience; delicious, fresh, thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. Mar was always on the pricey side, so possibly more of an indulgence than a regular stop for lunch or dinner. For the quality of the food, environment, service and experience, it's worth it. More like 3 1/2 stars. We truly want to support Jose and all his humanitarian efforts. Mar is the only real sit down and upscale restaurant at the Mercado of Hudson Yards. We came here first because of it. After viewing the menu, we decided to share a couple items to take the edge off and then try one of the other stand up places. The prices were quite high here for the portions, even though we realize that seafood is expensive and we were in New York City. My girlfriend and husband each had a glass of wine for around $15-17; her husband's beer was $10. They gave us some complimentary green olives that came in a cute dish with an attached dish on the side for the pits. They shared a shallow serving of paella with 3 large shrimp on it on top of cut up bits of toasted pasta (instead of rice). There were no vegetables or anything else in the pasta. It was good, but the portion was small. The presentation was nice, however. We shared an appetizer of fried fish marinated in spices served with a dipping sauce on the side. Four small pieces of fish were spaced out on a long plate. The fish was good. I asked for a piece of bread. They brought two small baskets to the table -- as I was the only one who wanted any, we tried to send one back. They insisted. We found out later they charged us $4 for the bread. I'm glad we went if only to support Jose, but we were starving when we left. We happily went to one of the empanada and bocata places in the market just outside the enclosed restaurant, and had a very good half sandwich. read more

At first while looking at the menu, nothing particularly popped. However, after my friends and I agreed on a strategy to share a couple dishes here then venture into the food hall for more food, we didn't feel pressured to order an entree each. We started out with the endive salad. This was surprisingly simple with a few stalks of endives sprinkled with cheese and pomegranate seeds. I expected a bit more, but it ended up growing on me and finished my portion. Then we shared the octopus with black ink rice and the seafood stew. The octopus dish came with 3 small octopi on the top over a bed of this lucious, rich, flavorful stewy rice which had pieces of octopus in it as well. The rice was delicious. As for the seafood stew, it included a small piece of fish, shrimp, mussels, and potatoes. Also enjoyed this dish as well. Couldn't dine without some sangria, which made the Spanish meal complete. The portions are small, but luckily you're at a food hall, so you can continue to eat after your leave. It's on the pricey side, so you're better off sharing. We ordered Buñuelos de bacalao ($8) and Gambas al ajillo ($15). One word: AMAZING! Food is really really good, authentic, and ingredients top noch. Did I ever mentioned that I was born in Barcelona and moved to NyC 3 years ago? So I know what I am talking about and what Spanish food should be. Finally a place that offers real Spanish food, not americanised at a great price. Buñuelos were crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. The cod was flavourful and creamy. It came woth honey alioli sauce on the side, yummy! Gambas came in a ceramic pot and had the shrimp heads on (best thing is to suckle them!) Complimentary bread, which is basic for the oil on the gambas. Complimentary olives were offered when we were waiting for our food to come. My husband got a caña at $6 which was expensive for the glass. Appreciated that it was Spanish beer but too expensive for roughly 6oz... Place: atmosphere is really awesome and decoration very Mediterranean with a Mariscal painted wall, You can be seated on regular tables or at the bar. Oh! Our baby was sleeping on his stroller so we were perfectly accomodated although it seemed to be the only place to have the stroller next to the table without bothering anyone. They told me that high chaira were also available We saw few of the dishes (like the Rossejat) and it also seemed good value for money and tasty. Looking thru the menu, prices seemed reasonable (good price for the quality you get) but not sure why Calamarcitos a la plancha (tapas) are that insanely expensive compared to the rest of the menu (mistake? Food was good but a bit pricey. Because it was delicious, I give it a 4. But for the price especially the 2 little squid in rice in squid ink being $40 is a 3. But our service was close to a 5. And this is why I rate it a 4. If you have to eat your dessert inside the restaurant because you can eat it comfortably without searching for a chair to sit down on, I recommend the Tocino del Cielo. They do a good job here like a specific favorite place people go to in Madrid without mentioning it. Don't forget to order the Ibulli shrimp - it's worth the experience. I am not sure how they make it but it's another expensive choice in the menu. But at least you get to taste an Ibulli dish without having to go fly to Spain and eat at Ibulli The pan con tomate served with 4 pieces of anchovies were also very good. And I do recommend the other squid dish on sliced potatoes. That had more squid than the rice with squid ink for $40. What I liked about eating here is because it is not another tapas place majority are familiar with. It is not the typical tapas. It is not the usual pan con tomate. It is not your usual squid or pulpo with olive oil. In fact I think besides the price, the blank ink rice is as good as you would get if you went to Spain at a good restaurant. Gosh, how this place has gone down. I have had dinner at Mar multiple times over the last few years. First went prior to the pandemic. The food and service was amazing. The menu was a gem and I really found it to be one of the nicest dining experiences I've had. Went at the end of 2022 and thought it was awesome. Well, I went back for the first time since a few weeks ago. Gone was the outstanding service. Whereas in the past, the waiters explained menu items and took time to make sure everything was okay, this go-around service was impersonal. I didn't even get cutlery with my dishes (a dining partner grabbed some from the serving table next to us). In addition, the menu has changed and it seems to be same menu as La Barra. Gone are the items that made this place special. I will not go back. read more

El Mar may not be for you if you are hungry. When we arrived, we were told that it with would be a 25-45 minute wait to sit at the bar. Uummm ok. I will say that our hostess was really nice and managed to find us a spot at the bar pretty quickly. The portions here are pretty petite . . . for the price. Honestly, the food was not THAT great to justify the price. Also, the service (with the exception of our hostess) was not that great. Maybe struggle service is the theme of Mercado because I've experienced subpar service at other places in this glorified food court.
