There is a strict time limit for tables, but we knew that ahead of time and had no issue with it. The guacamole was easily the standout of the evening--honestly some of the best I've had in a long time. The food itself was flavorful, but a bit dry for my personal taste. The waiter let us know that the enchiladas were spicy, which I appreciated, and they definitely had a nice kick. The birria had some sauce, though it wasn't quite the rich, traditional style I was expecting. I ordered the pork shoulder, and while it tasted good, it was on the dry side. Really enjoyed the tacos, which were simple but very tasty. The service was as great as it could be considering they say something like 7-10 tables in a span of minutes on the second floor. The waiter was rushing from one table to the next and was friendly, polite and did the best he could but that should have been managed better by the host. Most unfortunate was the lack of sufficient AC upstairs. It was incredibly hot, uncomfortable and stuffy on an 80+ degree day. When we left we noticed they have one small standing AC for the whole floor near the stairs. Came here for light dinner after a local event. The bartender suggested taquitos al pastor, which is pork with pineapple filling. Started with the guacamole then I got the chilaquiles with scrambled eggs while my husband got the burrito Texaco - we shared sides of white rice and black beans. With the brunch entrees at $15.95, I found the place to be pretty reasonable. Guacamole was fine; my husband liked the hot sauce it came with better. The chips were a tad too salty. My chilaquiles were good but I am not sure a human should be eating that many fried tortilla chips in one sitting so will probably order something else next time. I wasn't a huge fan of the green sauce with my husband's entree (had a sour tangy after taste to me) but he liked it and I otherwise liked the burrito. Re service, they were great about constantly refilling our waters. They did forget about our rice and beans but not a huge deal - they brought them out shortly after we asked about them. We walked in on a summer Sunday around 12 and there was plenty of seating available (though it is small inside). They had a few outdoor tables as well. Loved that they accepted Apple Pay. Different location but the food was so good I had to rave about it! The rich flavor on the soup that brought together the mixture of greens and appropriate amount of corn. If you like the soups to be extremely hot I would suggest them to heat it at a longer temperature than usual. The waitress was so kind and even when my sister was being silly and dropped one of her flautas had no problem bringing us out another. I've been going to Fonda off and on for almost 20 years. After tonight I will not step foot in there AGAIN, except to protest their HORRIBLE customer service. I will admit after coaching people on delivering high-touch service, I have little patience for people who won't accommodate basic requests. I was eating at the bar and accidentally left a fresh meal I ordered to-go there. I realized it once I was almost home. I live far away from Fonda as this restaurant is near my employer. I called to ask them to hold until tomorrow. They said no, if I didn't come back tonight, it would be thrown out and I wouldn't receive a refund. What? People want to open restaurants and claim they deliver good service, but don't know the definition of it. The supposed manager held the same stance. I got angry and told them I'd tear them up online. The MANAGER'S response...DO IT, I'll call the police. What? So I keep calling back and being a nuisance. Yup, I know too much about service to deal with rude stuff. I then had to hear I have no education, all sorts of foolishness. Oh I'm educated, I have a whole 4-year degree from a top university in...you guessed it...hospitality management. I get food safety. A high-touch thing to do would be to say, don't worry, either we'll refund you or we'll make you a fresh one tomorrow. Fonda serves up a great menu of contemporary Mexican cuisine. I went here with some colleagues and enjoyed a lovely meal. The pan-seared salmon was served with a sweet potato mash surrounded by a tasty moat of mole sauce. It may or may not have been the special that evening. I can't remember. Hd a lovely dinner here. This is one of those places where when they say spicy, they mean it. I love that. The Guac is deliciously fresh and comes with thick chips that can hold on to the guac. no complaints. The hot sauce on the side is smoky and delish and I used it on other stuff later, didn't need it in the guac because they are true to their word -- it was a true medium spicy The Mango mojito is good with a Strong mint and lime flavor coming through but it could have used more mango. Cute presentation in the pineapple glass. With the Avenue B, hubby was hesitant but he surprised himself with how much he enjoyed it. Beautiful berry color. Chicken taquitos: not what you imagine when you think of taquitos, these were more taco looking. But forgetting all that, the flavors were top notch. He loved it. He wasn't even that hungry and finished the dish. Veggie enchiladas are full of veggies for sure and the Fresh flavors shine. The sauce was billed as a spicy sauce (tomato habanero) but I found it quite mild. Adding that sauce that came with the guac was the trick and we were in back business. If you know me you know I love mexica food. This is my first time arriving to this location. I have gone to Fonda in Tribeca which I love! Ambience: The ambiance was vibrant, with colorful decor and lively music that instantly put me in a festive mood. Fonda Chelsea has outdoor sitting which is perfect for the sunny days we have been having. The location may seem small from the outside but it's actually quite big and it was a second floor. The Food: The menu had tons of options for everyone! I started with El Queso Fundido with Chorizo which came with soft tortillas...mouth watering! The ensalada de aguacate y zanahoria (avocado and carrots) was so refreshing and delicioso! I highly recommend to add grilled chicken to fill more full and get your protein. Ended with Carne asada con hongos (grilled steak with mushrooms). The sauces on it was AMAZING! This is a must try and could be a good size for 2 people depending how hungry you are. Service: The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, providing excellent service throughout my meal. I arrived during a little chaotic time, therefore it took some time to get my drinks but other than that everyone was incredible. Overall, my experience at Fonda Chelsea was nothing short of fantastic. We've been going to Fonda since it opened in 2009. In the last few months the food has gotten inconsistent and the service sub-par. All restaurants have raised prices but in the case of Fonda this coincidences being charged for extras like salsa (which incidentally comes in tiny containers) or extra chips (even when your order guacamole). Tonight we ordered for five and most thought the food was only ok, with one person taking a bite and throwing the rest out. So disappointed. read more

We told him we were vegetarian and he didn't even offer us the vegetarian menu, I ended up seeing it on someone else's table and asked for it. We asked him questions about the menu and he wouldn't properly answer those either. The drinks were average and the food was okay. I did enjoy my chilaquiles and thought the sauce was well seasoned and the guacamole turned out great as well. However, my husband said his tacos were okay and not really worth it. I came here for the second time tonight for my birthday dinner and Fonda NEVER disappoints! I would suggest ordering the guacamole (I choose medium heat) and it comes out FRESH & with chips and tortillas which taste so so good! The frozen Rosalita is so delicious and strong so 2-3 will have you with a great buzz! This time I ordered the Salmon dish which was cooked to PERFECTION! It comes with sweet potatoe mash and this sauce that has a little spice to it and I was 100% satisfied. My mom ordered the pork dish and loved it and it's a big serving keep in mind (which I love) and we also ordered the chicken dish .. everything at this restaurant is delicious! The server was friendly and accommodating to my request of ordering from the lunch/dinner menu instead of brunch. I really enjoyed my cocktail that was a special for Pride week .I forget the name of it but it had St. Germain in it which I love. I ordered my old standby of tacos Al pastor. Lovely little restaurant in Chelsea with plenty of outdoor seating. I had mixed impressions on the food - my grilled skirt steak with cheese was really good. However, I thought the medium guacamole was only OK, and my friend's watermelon salad with a side of chicken was more of a dessert than an appetizing meal. For a more upscale Mexican restaurant than the norm, I was expecting a bit more in terms of quality and service. Our meal was slow to arrive, with each person's entrees coming out at different times. The last dish to arrive was my friends salad, followed by her chicken add on 5-10 minutes later. It's not really an "add-on" to the salad if it comes on a separate dish and after you've nearly finished your salad. Poor margaritas and two entrées was $150 which in New York City is not bad especially considering the quality of the food. Definitely worth many many repeats. Made no business sense and we were just quietly talking and ordering dessert, coffee etc. Being forced to leave even though no one is there was inappropriate and I frankly think that manager should be reprimanded.
