The first thing placed on the table was their famous aji verde, the vibrant green sauce. I couldn't resist dipping my fork in for a taste--spicy, fresh, and absolutely addictive. We ordered a spread that truly showcased the menu: Mama Juanita's rotisserie chicken, perfectly seasoned and juicy; corvina; and a ceviche mixto loaded with shrimp, octopus, calamari, red onions, cilantro, rocoto pepper, and lime juice. It was so refreshing and flavorful that I found myself spooning up every last drop of the citrusy marinade. The lomo saltado was another standout--a savory Peruvian stir-fry with marinated strips of beef, served alongside crispy fries. We also added a side of maduros, their sweetness balancing the meal beautifully. The ambiance was casual, comfortable, and simple, with unique walls decorated in intertwined tree branches that added a rustic touch. The portion is huge and easily serves three people. They use high quality seafood and never over cook it. The outside texture was nice and crispy and the inside was tender. We came for lunch after volunteering for 9/11 Day at the Intrepid, and our group of 11 was treated wonderfully. I called just 15 minutes ahead to reserve a table, and the lady who answered was so accommodating. When we arrived, she greeted us warmly and had everything ready to go. Our waiter, Caesar, was pure joy! His personality lit up the table, funny, attentive, and completely on point managing such a large group. We ordered three Matadors to share, which included whole rotisserie chickens, rice, beans, tostones (we swapped one order for sweet plantains), fries with sausages (salchipapa), and avocado salad. The service is incredibly quick - we were greeted, order placed and food served within a 20 minute span. The sangria was so yummy! Both the red and white were great. A bit on the sweeter side though. Tonight was my third time coming to this restaurant, and it's always just as good as the first time! Upon entering the restaurant, you're greeted right away by the front of house staff, and I've never experienced a wait- we're always seated right away. I've also made a point to order a different thing each of the three times I've been. The food also always arrives quickly, and the staff is extremely attentive and helpful. To start, I'd definitely recommend the avocado salad. The portion is big enough to be shared amongst a group of 3-4 people. We also got the tostones to share, which comes with a garlic sauce that compliments it perfectly. Another thing at Pio Pio that you absolutely cannot miss is their sangria. Like the salad, a pitcher of sangria is large enough to serve 3-4 people. It's absolutely delicious and doesn't taste like alcohol- but I will warn you, it is pretty strong. They don't have too many vegetarian options, but there are some things. Since I eat fish and shellfish, that increases the options slightly, but it's definitely a good place for those who do eat meat. For the arroz chaufa, it comes with chicken by default, but they can remove it upon request to make the dish vegetarian. This is a great restaurant that I've had nothing but good experiences in. The food came incredibly fast, almost too fast but no complaints about it. I had a pisco sour which was pretty good. Now the service is where they lose their stars. Once the food came I asked for condiments and their Peruvian beer-- it till then about 20 minutes to give me both which was longer than it took the food to come. But in the context of other Peruvian chicken I've had in the past, it was not extraordinary. Yes the skin was crispy and the meat was juicy. The arroz chaufa hit all the savory notes that I was looking for too. The sangria didn't disappoint either. What was bad? Overall, not too much other than the sporadic and slightly chaotic service. Not necessarily any marks against Pio Pio for this, I think it was just a busy night. The main issue I had was the frozen chicken used in the arroz chaufa. In a restaurant that is known for its chicken, you wouldn't think they would cheap out on it at any point. But, this was simply not the case. It was dry, chewy, and clearly not as fresh as their rotisserie chicken. It didn't scare me off entirely from going back, but I was disappointed to say the least. Most people have extremely low bars for chicken as a meat they would spend money on at a restaurant. Don't give people a reason to complain I just don't get it. We started with Pisco sours, which were delicious and moved right on to appetizers. The ceviche Saltado is exquisite. It had lots of seafood and was quite tasty. The avocado salad proved to be our only disappointment. While there was a generous amount of avocado, the rest of the salad left much to be desired as it was mostly iceberg lettuce. We were very pleased with our three seafood entrées. The Jalea (large size) was enormous and easily enough for two people. Chock-full of lightly fried, though not greasy, calamari, shrimps and assorted seafood. The Mero Norteño was an exceptionally tender and flavorful, sea bass and the Parihuela seafood soup provided a variety of seafood in a delicious sauce. We were seated toward the front of the restaurant and were comfortable and not cramped. Service is friendly though in the front probably not as attentive as elsewhere in the restaurant. My husband got the creamy chicken and it was bland, we'd get something else in the future. Portions were fair, not huge but also not small. Prices were high but this was expected given it's an upscale place and Peruvian food tends to be pricey. If I lived or worked nearby I'd consider coming back.
