I've wanted to try Coppelia for some time now, sister to Cuba and Toloache; two restaurants that I adore and are go tos for Cuban food. I wanted a warm lunch today due to a really cold fall day. Coppelia offers everything from lechon, baked chicken, desayuno all day..to just about everything a Cuban kitchen can produce. I ordered the Chicken soup, yucca fries and arroz con frijoles negros. The delivery was a little late and the sweat of the yucca fries went through delivery bag, otherwise , everything was packaged securely. Here's what my tastebuds went through: 1. Yucca fries: delicious, just a tad hard but yucca is a bit denser than regular potatoes, I think. The mojo sauce was great and tangy for dipping. 2. Chicken soup: absolutely delicious, abundant chicken, potatoes, noodles, carrots and a hint of cilantro. The broth was delicious and piping hot. Perfect for a cold day. 3. Rice and black beans: I was so full from soup and fries that I saved it for a meal tomorrow. I know portions vary from restaurant to restaurant. However, $6 for rice and beans is a steal and the portion is abundant. Compared to other places in Soho where a side of rice is $6 and side of beans is $6. I plan to visit Coppelia in person for a future meal due to being near Village Vanguard. So far, if you work near 14th Street definitely visit them. Let's say it's 2am, you have the drunchies, and nothing sounds better than scarfing down chilaquiles, lemon ricotta pancakes, a torta, and maybe another gin & tonic. The beauty of living in this city is that you can satisfy those cravings with this 24 hour Cuban diner. Many 24 hour and late night restaurants have scaled back their hours but Coppelia remains an around the clock option. It's always in my back pocket when I need a late night meal while in Chelsea, and that need struck on a recent summer evening. There was a short ~20 min wait for a table for 3 on a Monday night, so I imagine it's that much busier on a Friday or Saturday night, so plan accordingly. I've enjoyed their fish tacos, gambas al ajillo, empanadas, and rice and beans. I'm always starving when I'm here so that has definitely amped up the flavors in my memory. The kitchen was a little slow on a busy night, but beggars can't be choosers, and if we weren't so spoiled for choice in NY Coppelia would be one of the best restaurants around. read more

Spontaneous date night and wanted to try out something new. Found this place which we have driven by forever. It had a cute intimate feeling when walked in and felt homey. Waiter was nice and answered all of my wife's questions. We did get the guacamole with the chips and very very smooth and tasty especially with the plantain chips and freshly made potato chips. I had the mofongo (because I'm a sucker for mofongo) with beef ribs and wow the combination was soooooo tasty to the point I was licking my lips and fingers for more. My wife ordered the churrasco with Moro rice and sweet plantains and she enjoyed the beef and was surprised that she ate it all because it was large - testament for how well it was prepared. Was looking for a brunch place that I can't experience at home in AZ (there's like no Cuban there!). This fit the bill! Large menu with a great selection of breakfast items and traditional Cuban dishes, plus a large drink menu/full bar. Although it was busy we got seated right away. Our server was attentive. We ordered shrimp and grit and one of the specials...I can't remember the name (doh!) but it was basically ropa vieja with rice and beans, grilled sweet plantains, avocado, and an egg. Got recommended this spot from a local and it did not disappoint. I will initially say that the menu is quite diverse with a variety of food with emphasis on Cuban cuisine. They also offer dishes like pancakes, omelette and other American breakfast plates. We started off with some awesome margaritas. Feeling a craving for meat we got both the steak frites and churrasco. We also ordered shrimp tacos. The steaks were very tender. The food was amazing. Service was very friendly and prices were reasonable for the area. Let's just say this place did not disappoint at all! - Guacamole - Great creamy guac - Mac & Chicharron - absolutely fantastic mac and cheese with pork belly, chicharron, and sambal bringing in a little heat - Cubano - probably the best Cubano I've had so far in the city. Been twice in the last two weeks. Talk about a New York City Institution. You can catch me in one of the back tables with the crew. A mix of TexMex, Cuban and Peruvian cuisine, Coppelia is a nice safeguard when everything else is packed or closed. I have been rejected here when it was spilling out to the streets, but not recently. I've even had a fun outdoor dinner on the street tables a (few) summer back. First time around, I had the steak quesadilla and it was a solid choice. Our table had the mac and cheese, flauntas, tequenos and maduros. Frozen mango margarita comes as one of my favorite flavors. Margaritas are never out of season argues one of my friends. Second time around last night, I had the chilaquiles (no meat) and extra guacamole. It has to be one of my top future hangover foods. Though that might not be something wise to plan for. Otherwise worthily noted when you've been day-drinking with friends. If you haven't been, you should go. The 1st meal that I got I wasn't a big fan of the oxtail so I sent it back but if the oxtail was cooked differently it would've been really good to me. So after having to wait about 12 min outside we finally got to sit at the bar and what would you do first after a night of drinking. Obviously grab another drink. They were fast cause the clock turns 4am on a Sunday no liquor getting poured, but they got us all with a minute to go amazing I loved my old fashion. In to the food. I had to try the beef empanadas. From the crust to the filling they were delicious crispy and flavors Were just stirring in my mouth. Then I got the LOMO SALTADO Baby amazing. I loved it from start to end from the tenderness of the short ribs the crispness of the peppers and onions. This felt like home cooking. This place is open 24/7 it was crowed it was packed it was loud at 4am on a Sunday morning. It was delicious and that's why they get 5 stars how many times have we all gone to a restaurant that late night the quality of the food just diminishes not here it felt as if no matter what time u walked in them door that food would be great. Ok, so this is my first time in NY and I can say that this place made my last night here one to remember! Not because it's my first time there, but the fact that the East Coast does it a lot better with Cuban food than the West Coast - LOL! Yes I can get this at home, but the taste and love you get from eating here is best than any other Cuban food I have ever ate back at home. Everything we ate here felt so WHOLE HEARTED! The drinks are made to PERFECTION and the staff there themselves are THEE BEST service providers I've came across. I literally ate everything off of everyone's plate because I couldn't resist from the presentation. My pictures as you can tell are in the dark, but we went when it was dinner time and the mood was definitely SET. I know I will coming back here AGAIN in October and I will be trying it all and the fact that their open 24/7 just tops the cherry for this location. Come, enjoy and feel the love this place gives off. If you have any complaints, then you shouldn't be out and about with that attitude. We landed in New York with Coppelia as one of our must see destinations and we were not wrong for that. You smell the food wafting up the street as you approach. The aroma entices you to think about what you will eat before you even get to sit down. Amazing wait staff that are attentive and get you what you need quickly. We decided to start with a Spicy Michelada using Modello and a modello beer. Can't got wrong with solid beers. There are so many drinks to choose from you really have to decide what to drink before even looking at food. For appetizers we got the empanadas. Omg, you won't believe me until you experience them yourself, but they were amazing. Chicken and beef, both of them were perfectly fried and the meat inside was flavorful beyond expectation. Main dishes we got the Cubano and the Arroz con Pollo. The Cubano was not just amazing, literally outstanding. The mojo on the meat came through all of the other flavors without overpowering it. The bread was extremely crispy and not too thick and "bready". The meat and sandwich melted as you ate them. The Arroz con Pollo defied logic. Super fluffy rice, chicken that legit falls apart as you bite it, and the green onions rounded out each bite wonderfully. I couldn't complain about anything with Coppelia. The Lomo Saltado was excellent. The short rib was tender and full of flavor, fries crispy and overall great dish. The oxtail empanada was also very good, sweet plantain dough was a nice touch as well as all the sauces. The chicken empanada although good paled in comparison. read more

Being from Jersey, there's scarcely much I appreciate more than a great late night diner experience. That's exactly what I had here at Coppelia. I came here for two things: eggs, and quality meat. Coppelia's unique hash with soft, slow cooked beef really hit the money for me. Others at my table got the lomo saltado, a quesadilla, and a Cuban sandwich. Everything was great, and I really liked the thick fries that came with the sandwich. I also really enjoyed the spicy jalapeño margarita cubana. The indoor ambiance is great, and so was the service. The food is also surprisingly cheap. I was mostly shocked by the ~$10 breakfast items, which still come in good portions and are delicious. I honestly can't really think of anything critical to say from my experience, so I'll just close with a recommendation to check this place out if you haven't been. read more

What can I say about the only place that reminds me of the Churrasco I have in Miami. This is the place you go to when you want a nice, juicy, super flavorful piece of steak. A steak that tastes like it's been marinated in a Cuban sauce flown in directly from Calle Ocho in Miami. The Brussels sprouts that accompany the steak is stuff you dream about. I grabbed dinner and drinks here with an old coworker. She's been here many times and raved about it. Every item was a hit in her book, and they serve breakfast 24/7!
