Bad. Used to be a favorite. We were excited to go back to this place after a several months break. Wow, what happened? My wife got the scallops and risotto - she's had it several times and it's been awesome. Tonight she got five scallop the size of a nickel that appeared to have been cooked in a deep fryer and put on top of the risotto. I'm not kidding. They were way overcooked, dried out and chewy. The risotto was extremely salty. She ate about 3 bites of it. I had the ahi tuna bowl. I've had it before and liked it a lot. Tonight the tuna had a VERY strong taste. Ahi should not be strong. I don't think it was anywhere close to being fresh. On top of all of this the hostess was rude and service was mediocre. Sad to see a place we liked a lot not care about their food or their service. If they don't care enough to put out good food and good service anymore I don't care enough to go back. read more

My mom says this is one of the best pulled pork sandwiches she's ever had. The coleslaw on it was perfect since it didn't have a lot of creamy mayo. I wish I had gotten something other than the fish tacos. The fish in them wasn't the best quality and tasted pretty gross. I didn't even get through the first taco, but, thankfully, the delicious, loaded Bloody Mary I had filled me up. I'd come back to try something else if we come through Dubuque again. I was in with a group of seven on Friday evening, my mother was sent a drink that needed to be returned, orders went fine. After about 10 min. a salad was served top my mom. We waited another 35-40 minutes for our entree's, OK I get it. Every one was served except for me, as I sat and watched everyone eat their food, I had to get my own drinks from the bar, obviously there was a problem with my food. Yet instead of facing the issue our server decided to ignore the table all together. I was served a salad as every one was finishing their food, by the time my food was served every one was well finished eating. I asked for the food to go and I received 3 -2x2" pieces of fish, literally a tablespoon of coleslaw. I have never been so disappointed in the service that was offered and I will not return or recommend this establishment. The server needs to find another line of work. read more

We have been here 4 times now. 3 of those times we sat at the bar. The food is very good. I would give it about a 4.5. But.. The service has been a 5.0 every time. The people are more than friendly. I got FOOD POISONING there a month ago from their pulled pork (it was the only thing we ordered that I did not share with my wife that night). I have tried to contact them six times via their email and social media posts so that my complaint and their response would be in writing. After six attempts, no one has responded, instead they blocked me on Facebook. We had eaten there three times previous to the food poisoning with no problems, and we probably would have given them another try, if they had at least apologized. Their ghosting us about our experience is very immature and disappointing. We will not be going back now, and I do not recommend this place to anyone. This place is described as featuring New American Cuisine. As an older American I'm not sure what that means but I know what I like and my wife and I very much like dining at the Copper Kettle. It is in an older neighborhood on the north end of Dubuque and looks like a neighborhood bar that's been there forever. Inside is a clean modern eatery with novel preparations and sides prepared by a chef rather than a grill man or line cook. This evening we enjoyed roasted chicken and pork chops elevated by excellent preparation like a hot honey Tabasco sauce on the chicken and a pretzel crust on the pork chops and sides like truffle fries, whipped sweet squash, and balsamic glazed Brussels sprouts. Dinner was great! Dubuque needs more places like this. I enjoyed a nice local draft beer for only $3.75. We arrived at 5:30 on a Monday when lots of restaurants are closed and they asked if we had a reservation. We didn't, but were seated immediately and by 6:30 they were full with a mixed crowd of families and couples and everyone was enjoying a great night out. Stopped into the Copper Kettle based on the reviews and photos we saw on different online platforms. We passed through Dubuque on a Tuesday afternoon shortly after lunchtime. The place was not very busy during this time. So we were immediately greeted with smiles and then seated. Our waitress told us the specials for the day and got our drinks promptly. We took a look at the menu which had some impressive choices and decided right away. We felt the place had a very clean presence, nice atmosphere and cool ambience to it. Perfect choice for a stop we both felt. My wife and I both have a deep passion for food and the people behind the scenes that make these types of restaurants work smoothly. So we always look for places when traveling that Excell in food. Being a trained chef and owner of our own successful Restaurant for over 12 years now we fully understand what it takes. We are honest in our critiques. Regardless we would stop again anytime we are passing through town. So here are our honest opinions... Scallops were seared perfectly, nice color, fresh, and seasoned well. The Risotto was cooked correctly but needed some seasoning or a little more broth for some added richness. My wife ordered the Fish and Chips which looked the part. Nice batter, big chunks of fish. However it was under seasoned and under cooked. It needed another minute or two even in the fryer to get crispy. Or the oil turned up just a bit. It was very mushy and disappointing. Everyone had a bad day once in awhile. We were still impressed. We hit this spot on the way through town. Name is a bit misleading as it's more like a cafe/diner combination. Easy to find location. I believe the public transport serves this location as well. Across from Dubuque's historic Malting & Brewing Company complex. Historic theme, friendly atmosphere and apparently very popular with locals and visitors alike. We arrived in the midst of a regular workday during lunch and were able to snag a seat before it ended up getting busy. Friendly and attentive staff. The staff was running around like a well choreographed dance. We didn't have to wait long for a seat for our 6:30pm reservation. This restaurant is wonderful. It's a bit off the beaten path, but it is very worth the effort! We frequent this place regularly. My partner is more adventurous than I in trying different things on their menu, but he's always enjoyed what he gets! We both have our favorites, though - the pulled pork sandwich and the gyro - yum! The garlic parmesan truffle fries are AMAZING. The cheese curds are also great - they're hand-battered, so they're unlike any other curds you're going to find in the area. They have a great beer selection and carry a lot of Midwest or Iowa brews. If you're planning on going for dinner on a weekend, it might be best to get a reservation, but we've rarely had to wait very long for a seat.
