We asked for them well done and they were cooked perfectly and some of the best wings we've had. We split a bleu cheese burger which was also excellent and opted for their onion rings instead of fries which we highly recommend. Manager was great as well. Copper Penny was great! We were visiting in town and decided to try this local establishment. Loved the Philly pub theme as someone who lived there for a bit. I got the fish and chips which were lightly battered and crispy - definitely a little bit of a unique batter which I loved. The fries were amazing and went great with the house tartar sauce. My husband had the smoked tomato soup which was so delicious and packed with flavor. The prices were extremely fair, especially compared to the surrounding restaurants. When I called to make reservations for our party of 7, I learned they don't take reservations but they encouraged us to come as close to opening as possible since it's a rather small place. We've been regulars here for a while and have always loved coming in--but the last two visits have left us really disappointed. From the moment we sat down, we felt rushed. Both times, we were pushed out the door in 45 minutes. As soon as our food arrived, our waitress was back trying to clear our plates--even while we were still eating. A few times, I had food in my mouth when she asked if I was done and started grabbing my plate. It was embarrassing. It's been the same waitress both visits, and while we didn't say anything in the moment and still left our usual 25% tip--we left feeling really annoyed. We never stay more than an hour, so it's hard not to feel like regulars might not be as welcome anymore. If this happens again, I'm not sure we'll be back. Ugh. Wish they would do better. read more

When rolling into old town Wilmington's waterfront district I was hoping for seafood. I actually had fish n chips on my mind. Well the Copper Penny came through big time for me. Parking is off street meter. Watch them they are either 30 min or 2 hours. Also a garage parking is two blocks away. There was a 25 minute wait in the pub type restaurant and we decided it was worth it. Others joined outside on the bench. At approximately 20 minutes my cell text notified me our table was ready. A host sat us down in a booth in short order. Menus and drink orders were placed. Our waitress rocked and was so nice and chatted with us about the area once she found out we were on vacation and touring UNCW. The Copper Penny is in an old two story building downtown Wilmington. Just one block from the water. The restaurant is dark and has a cool English style pub feel which I adored. A cool old fashion bar runs a long the wall. The other side are booths. The floors are wood. Really cool vibe that was just what I had hoped for. The noise level was comfortable. Orders were placed and of course it was fish n chips for me, chicken sandwich for wife and BLT for my daughter. Within 15 minutes food was flowing out from our awesome waitress. Since it was so dark I could not capture the dishes. However my fish was fantastic and the thick tartar sauce was super yum. Fries were hot and tasty too! Both my wife and daughter reported their satisfaction with their meals. A check in was performed by staff and I asked for extra napkins which were promptly delivered. A bill was delivered timely and prices were fair. Great place and really enjoyed the atmosphere and food. Absolutely recommend. 4.5 is right on target. read more

My daughter wanted to eat here so we have it another try. It was better this time although I'm unsure why. My daughter and I split the chicken tenders, and they charge $2.99 to split a meal. At first I was annoyed but when she explained that we each get our own side, it made sense. I got the sweet potato fries and they were hot and delicious. My husband ordered the Philly cheese steak and said it was good. He was thinking about the Cuban, but the server told him it didn't have ham on it, well then, that's not a Cuban. Wait times especially during summer, weekends and UNCW big events can be past an hour so we recommend the 2-5pm window for a late lunch or early dinner. They occupy the first floor of a 2 story standalone building. Parking is all on street and metered so be wary. If you can get bar seats, thats the way to roll as large parties and families are attracted to the big booths like glaze on a donut. Plus you get a great view of the lofted ceilings and walnut bar from your stool. NOTE **The first two seats past the front curve of the bar are sub-zero in the summer thanks to a huge AC vent** Service and kitchen are fast, accommodating and get things right. Bar staff pays attention and moves quickly. Burgers and onion rings along with their highlighted roasted pork sammich are the best choices in our opinion; we agree with other Yelpers, their seafood is just standard pub fare. The reuben was excellent, large and well toasted with good fries as accompaniment. Onion rings are generous, fresh and not overbreaded or fried. This is probably the best genuine large food-centric pub in Wilmington's historic area and does not attract barflies, giant frozen drink fans or partiers. I got the Rueben and a side of fries and the food wasn't bad (I'm not very picky) but both items were too salty, their portions are quite big though and their prices are more than reasonable . Our wait staff Gianna(?) could not have been more helpful, attentive, and accommodating with recommendations. I had the black and bleu burger--so good. And they didn't skimp on the bread as some do; potato roll was flavorful. Ingredients fresh. I was concerned with not being able to select cook temperature, but it was perfect, about medium well and juicy. I wanted just a side portion of the Greek salad, which I was grateful they accommodated (I didn't leave a bite in the bowl--so good!). Others enjoyed the crab cake (no filler! Well done -- and we get the MD ones as we're DMV, so can confirm it doesn't disappoint); classic burger; pimento burger; and wings. Plates were cleared. Don't miss those onion rings. There's a reason that Guy Fieri visited the Copper Penny and it's written all over the food! First off the staff were all super friendly and attentive, we were there as soon as they opened and they filled up fast afterwards, but the staff handled everything like they were totally used to the hustle and still really appreciated us being there. Sitting in a bar I knew I had to order something to try out their wares so I snagged the Penny Punch and let's just say I got my monies worth! I'm a lightweight by drinking standards, but this drink had a great flavor and enough booze in that glass to get me a quick buzz lol only drinking around half. My bestie ordered the onion rings for us to share as an appetizer and they are seriously the best onion rings I've ever had, lightly battered, cooking and seasoned to perfection! Next came out my behemoth of a burger, the Black & Bleu burger, which did not disappoint and definitely one of the best burgers, or maybe even THE best burger I've ever had. The burger patty was cooked perfectly and well seasoned, and each additional topping did not take away from the quality of beef they used. The tomato was fresh, the blue cheese and onions were scrumptious, and OMG I could've taken home a bottle of that garlic aioli and used it as a dipping sauce for everything! Happy to report that this place is still phenomenal. It was way too long since we had been back in Wilmington, and when we we realized we were coming back, I literally looked for the closest hotel to the Copper Penny. But then they weren't open on the Sunday we arrived, so we showed up at 11:00am when they opened on Monday. First to arrive, we were given a big booth near the kitchen. They have smartly laminated menus to the tables for easy cleaning. But who needs a menu when you've already decided way before you arrived? Uh, Husband apparently. Okay I'll enjoy a Salty Turtle Breakfast Stout while he decides what he wants. Bring on the pork tenderloin sandwich for this Gal...Guy couldn't possibly be wrong. (and he sure wasn't), nor was he wrong about the onion rings. Husband loved his southwest burger also with onion rings. Do know that these rings are well worth the upcharge, but consider sharing as we had to sadly waste many due to the huge portions. Pork sandwich is indeed amazing! The Copper Penny is on many must try lists for the Wilmington, NC area, and it was definitely worth every cent. A limited menu presented itself here, and on special was the Bacon Steak long roll sandwich, which made for a good lunch time meal. The flavor was definitely in town for a good time, and the fries were fresh. The home made chips were more suitable for the low salt conscious, and one may suggest a side of ranch to dip them in. Not for me though, because I prefer to spend time on sunny beaches and not in Hidden Valleys. The starter of crab dip served with warm pita points was quite remarkable as well. We arrived just as they opened at 11am, but not soon thereafter seating became extremely limited, and the game of no wait Stratego paid off.
