I love grabbing a coffee (now serving Retrograde!) and perusing their wide selection of books (great sale tables, too!), magazines and all of their interestingly curated other things. Exciting news: Copperfield's now serves Peet's Coffee and espresso drinks right inside their café! This might not sound like a big deal at first, but if you know that part of the mall, you know there's nowhere else nearby to grab a coffee. The closest spot, Avid, means trekking (or driving) across busy Sonoma Ave., Magowan Dr., and then Midway Dr. Now, when I'm feeling a little wiped after a fun run through Anthropologie, I have only to walk a few steps away and pop into Copperfield's for a pick-me-up! Their prices are great, the variety of bev's and treats are even better, but it's the cozy bookstore vibe and genuinely kind team that make Copperfield's café a total gem. read more

I had a HORRENDOUS experience here today. I WAS racially profiled at this location. I came inside the store excited to support a small bookstore. Unfortunately, I was DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED and OFFENDED. I walked in with my partner, and we began to look at the Halloween section. I immediately picked up a book and was very excited to continue browsing around the store. Upon entry we did not get greeted by anyone inside the store. As we took a few more steps further inside, we were IMMEDIATELY followed by one of their employees. He was a tall old white man with a ponytail and glasses. He started and continued to follow us around the store and continuously, kept an eye on us throughout our whole time there. We felt EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE and UNWELCOME. Cooperfield's has various locations, all are organized and spacious. And they all seem to have book signings with various authors. I was lucky enough to be able to attend a book signing with one of my favorite chef's from the Food Network channel, Damaris Phillips. Damaris happened to announce on her various social media platforms that she was doing an impromptu book signing at this location as her first cookbook had just recently came out (Southern Girl Meets Vegetarian Boy) since she was in town filming Guy's Grocery Games. What I liked about this book signing and Copperfield's was that they didn't shove the author into some corner in the back of the store. When I walked in the author was right by the entrance with a table, some books and people already there. In order to purchase a book I did not have to wonder through the store trying to find a copy, they were all neatly arranged at the cash registers so you made your purchased then went to the book signing. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Copperfield's Books has a wide range of books for any and all ages. Cute little bookstore filled with unique gifts alongside their books. I stopped by with my sister and nephew to pick up some new children books. The store had a wide variety of titles and a cozy atmosphere. They also had a coffee shop inside. The staff was attentive and helpful. I visited the store in person and left an email address to be contacted about a book arrival from another store of theirs. Several days passed without an email from them , so I called them and was informed that they had called yesterday and left a message. I went to my cell phone to check and discovered they had called, but they had not left a message, so I am not impressed. this rating is ONLY for their used book-buying policy, NOT their stores, which I love and used to visit a lot when my parents lived in Oakmont. We're downsizing and I am 65 and have collected books all my life -- of all genres and subjects. And my family included 2 Pulitzer-prize winning writers, so I have a lot of books they wrote, a number inscribed to my relatives. Just called the Petaluma store and listened to their recording about buying used books. Call ONLY on the 15th of each month. Make an appointment for sometime that month (they fill up quickly! they noted). Then, you can bring in 2 boxes or 2 bags of books. Leave them there -- then come back another time to collect them. SERIOUSLY?! I called S. Rosa to get some clarification about whether this was just the policy for the Peatluma store or -- ? And was told that ONLY the Petaluma store buys used books. No other location. So -- I'm going (at 65) to carry all my books to the car...drive to S.Rosa. Drive BACK again to pick them up...and do this at 3 different appointments, made for 3 different months. In other words, I am NOT going to be able to even have my books looked at for weeks and months -- while I do what? Pay to have them stored in a storage space? HERE"S WHAT I"LL DO: Pack them in the car ONCE and drive to Green Apple Books in San Francisco. Where I can take as many as I want in. Where they will look at them ON THE SPOT (or I can walk a couple of building down, have a beer and come back) and they will tell me right then and there which of ALL My books they want. I took some in 3 weeks ago and they purchased half of the 30 or so books I walked in with and gave me $80 cash in hand. I LOVE all book stores -- including Copperfield's -- and I never buy books from Amazon, but only independent booksellers (I will order them specially to do that). And esp used book stores. And I realize that many people are now trying to find good homes for their books but -- inconveniencing people like this is hardly going to get you the best books. People -- like me -- will be forced to throw them away items that could be very profitably resold -- or donate them to Goodwill -- because they don't have the time to hang around waiting for Copperfield's to find time for them. read more

I came in with my girlfriend. She needed to return a book and some socks that she had purchased for a friend before finding something that suited her better. The lady at the counter seemed really pissed off after my girlfriend politely asked her to return the items. She began interrogating my girlfriend about why she wanted to return the book which made us both very uncomfortable. She seriously had the audacity to ask her if she was just an impulsive shopper. We stopped in the Santa Rosa store on our way home from wine country. This is the second time we went here in the last 1-1/2 years since it is far from where we live. My husband always likes to patronize independent book stores. Both times the cashier was very rude and unfriendly. She is a tall middle aged woman that stands near the cash register. We shopped for about a half hour. My husband was looking in the history section that is situated by the cash register. He looked towards the cashier a few times and smiled. She did not acknowledge him at all. When we got ready to leave, hubby had 2 books to purchase ($30 each) As we reached the cashier desk, the same woman just stood there with a blank look on her face so he put the books down and we left. So, I'm a dummy and didn't realize they had moved so I drove around for about 15 minutes trying to find them. Sorry, Yelp- but in this instance, your map wasn't much help. I had called ahead and they held a book for me. Yes, it's more expensive than Amazon. We all know this and are making a conscious effort to shop there anyway. But, in the last couple of years, Copperfield's seems to have really gotten hip to the fact that JUST being a local business isn't enough for people to keep coming and to justify the higher-than-online prices. There needs to also be excellent customer service and a warm-fuzzy feeling while there. I think, at least with this new location, they have nailed it. The service was prompt, the people were very friendly and helpful and they giftwrap! The overall feel of the place is warm and welcoming. When I have more time, I plan to really peruse that place and probably spend more than I should! read more

HUGE LACK OF SERVICE and NO COMMUNICATION between the employees I asked on Monday to order 7 small books for my party and I asked to wrap each of the books with the paper with the ballons Thé never asked me to pay before I collect the books of Thursday I told her everything needs to be ready for Thursday afternoon Impossible for me to pick up on Thursday afternoon But when I arrived on Friday afternoon only 6 books were here and no wrap ..!! I was in a hurry to my party and everything supposed to be done one day before ..!!! The answer was .. I can do now and we don't supposed to wrap before you pay ..!! What a poor answer .. nobody told me to pay before to have everything ready ..!!!! First time here and felt unwelcomed. The employee pulled in carts of books while we were looking at them. It was over an hour until closing and didn't appear to have customers. I'm a picky girl when it comes to certain things and Copperfield's is the only place around where I can get my yearly planner (yes, I still use a paper planner - sue me!). Plus I'm a huge bibliophile so any place that sells books is the place for me! Penelope hit the nail on the head when describing the way Copperfield's smells...I would only add the smell of books to the list. There is nothing like walking into this place on a Saturday morning to smell coffee, cinnamon and books - three of my favorite things! I was wandering around inside the store for at least five minutes before staff acknowledged me, which wasn't a big deal because I had what I came for...but if someone really needed help, it might be more of a problem. And the store isn't as huge as other big box bookstores but it's better. Copperfields is a fabulous local entity that offers book signings by authors, a huge selection of all kinds of books, new and used in some locations. I love their kitschy gifts section. I think it is a great place to find something fun and different for a gift. They have a good calendar selection and their prices are reasonable considering they are a small local shop and not a massive corporation. read more

I was really glad to see Copperfield's in this spot in Montgomery Village. It's a much more central location than they were in previously and when I didn't see them in Sebastopol I wondered if they were even still around. Big, clean, attractive store with nicely organized shelves and all kinds of books on all topics. Also the typical accessories of journals, calendars, some fancy papers, cards, soaps and reading glasses. The majority of the store is books though, don't get me wrong. I picked up a book on sale as well as a card and a miniature button/pin as gifts for a friend. Staff was friendly and very helpful to those who needed assistance. Though another reviewer was surprised she was not offered assistance without prompting, I felt the atmosphere comfortable and easy to browse in without feeling rushed or watched-over. I really wanted to fall in love with Copperfield's. I love independent book stores, and was thrilled to find one in Santa Rosa. With a Peet's no less! They are quite friendly. Unfortunately, they rarely seem to have what I am looking for. I realize they are a small store and can't carry everything, but I am not talking about obscure books or off-beat topics. I am referring to mainstream business mags (Newsweek as I recall), that they don't carry. Not sold out. Just don't carry it. Also a widely anticipated biography the week it was released. Didn't have it. Maybe next week. They are willing to order things for you, which is nice but hardly convenient. I will continue to make them my first stop for general purchases that they might carry. Forget about imports like Formula 1 magazine or Wall*paper. Ultimately I find myself needing to go to Amazon or B&N for a lot of my purchases. PS - I'm sad that they apparently are no longer allowing dogs in the store. read more

I've been in this store quite a few times before and have never been asked if I needed help. Yesterday, I was in town and thought I might drop by to find a specific book I've been looking for. I politely asked the older woman who was sitting in a chair if she could help me out. Before I could finish my sentence, she scowled at me and told me she was helping someone. She told me someone could help me by ringing the bell in the front. I was embarrassed being yelled at and interrupted. That is definitely not how you treat customers who want to spend money at your store. When I went to the front, they then told me they didn't have my book in stock. Cool. I ended up going to Barnes and Noble who treated me like a decent human being. Definitely will not be coming here anytime soon. read more

Only people they hire to work here are local book lovers themselves, and it shows. Amazing atmosphere in the place, and a really fun selection of some pretty off kilter stuff sometimes. The prices are just fine, and the selection is expansive, with all of the standard stuff that you would expect and then more besides.
