The staff was not helpful at all and got upset at my mom for telling them she was a teacher and to apply a teacher discount. I usually try to go to copperfields and support local businesses but not at the cost of customer service. The older woman seemed irritated to answer any questions and even ring me up! This is a really comfortable, old-fashioned place. It used to have more interesting books, but now has to stack mainly best-sellers and bargain books, in addition to gimmicks, toys, post cards, etc. Still a fine selection of magazines, including literary magazines, the NY Review of Books, etc. The coffee bar doesn't serve soup or sandwiches any more, but Peets coffee is still there, plus cookies and delicious danish pastries. read more

I love this cute, local bookshop. There's a cafe (tasty!) and a great magazine selection. I have to admit, I was surprised they had the book I was looking for considering how small of a shop it is but lo and behold, there it was! The staff is really friendly and engaging as well. The only reason I knocked a star off is the price...you can obviously get things cheaper on amazon and you think they'd lower the prices just a bit (off of the MRSP) to be competitive. I still love it and I'll still shop here but it'd be nice to not feel that "I'll get it on amazon" tug. read more

This store USED to be great in its previous location.... now it's just MEH...another bookstore soon to go out of business.. Every month I would spend at least $50 on foreign language books and take my mother who would spend at least another $50 on pleasure reading. Their stamp cards which ended up giving us a bit of free money at the end were a fun incentive. When they moved and basically eliminated my source of foreign language books and magazines, I lost interest in the store. Good luck! You've downsized me as a customer. read more

Great local bookstore. Nice selection. Support local bookstores and libraries! I miss Borders, even though it was gigantic, that's actually what I miss about it. Copperfields is smaller, but with the same feel. The only reason I didn't give the business 5 starts was size; more square footage would be better. I like this bookstore. It's a mid-sized indie bookstore that's got all the bestsellers but also has personal recommendations from staff and a lot of interesting quirky books. I also like that they have a decent sale section, because I can't afford to buy full-priced books. The cafe is also nice. It has peet's coffee, but just to be clear it's not a Peet's cafe. They just have the basic drinks there. read more

Ah, a REAL bookstore. You remember...the kind where the employees actually read and love books? An independent, locally owned place where you can actually feel the love? This is one of my favorite places in Santa Rosa. I can spend hours browsing the stacks and their fab magazine selection. They have great gifts, actual notecards and correspondence paper, and will--get this--wrap gifts free of charge. Every time I walk out of here, I have a stack of stuff-thank goodness for their frequent buyer card! read more

Great place to browse, to buy gifts, and one of the last independent book stores in the area. They're all fading fast, but Copperfield's is staying strong. The atmoshpere feels good, a great selection of art books and magazines, and good recommendations in the staff section. If they don't have something you want, they will order it for you. So much better than the busy, dry and sterile barnes and noble, it feels like a place to discover things. read more

Nice book store that sells Peets coffee and has wifi. Tables outside give you a quiet place to enjoy the coffee and wifi. If you want to buy a book, it's probably a good place too... but I usually download them to my phone from the library or archive.org. read more

I used to come here all the time to purchase the materials I needed for school when I was a student at MHS right down the street. I stopped by this morning to make a purchase that my sister needed for her distance learning. I placed my order over the phone and it was ready within minutes. Jesse, whom I believe is the manager, was attentive and polite. I love supporting local businesses, and their continued promptness and excellent customer service are just the cherry on top. I also appreciate all the safety measures they are taking to ensure the safety and health of their customers and employees (they have hand sanitizer by the entrance and require that customers wear their face coverings and practice social distancing). Why go to B&N or anywhere else when you can support a local business that does a fantastic job serving you? Will definitely be returning, and I highly recommend anyone bring their business here as well. read more

I hate to say it but - if you are going to charge me full-price books I could just easily get more cheaply on-line, then I expect superior customer service and selection, neither of which is a hallmark of the montgomery village store. You would think that an independent bookseller would try to stay on top of books in the news but I rarely find the books discussed in the San Francisco Chronicle, for instance, available in the store. Too often, when I've sought to order them, I am told that it will take weeks - something that seems very odd in today's mobile marketplace. In order to compete with the absolute bonanza of books available on line, Copperfields is going to have to offer something special. They could start by hiring booksellers who actually read; people who are in the position to suggest interesting, appealing titles based on what I've already read or on the description of the likes and dislikes of the person I'm purchasing a gift for. That has not been my experience so far. Sebastopol and Petaluma do a much better job. Perhaps Montgomery Village should take a page from their books! read more

I had the shock of having my club cards declined at the Santa Rosa store. Apparently (as I was informed) they don't honor their cards anymore. Times must be tough. I have been a patron/ customer for many years, supporting independent book sellers. I've accumulated more than a couple of dollars on my card and, believing that they would stand by their offer, I wanted to use whatever value the cards had to make a purchase. "Nope, can't take the cards" I'm afraid that I was too upset (hostile, pissed off, etc.) but to no avail, I was invited to call an administrative #, come back another day (20+ miles), or suck it up. Well,they didn't say that, but they were powerless to help. Why is that? Did admin tell floor to decline old promises? What do you think? read more

Kudos to Santa Rosa in general for "getting it" in 102 degrees and not being stingy with the A/C!! I did not expect to be there in such hot weather, maybe more like 90? Anyway, this was the 4th place I looked to find Postcards with pictures of Santa Rosa on them, Not San Francisco, etc. The young woman waiting on me even helped me look through the rack. And when I needed a rest room, they were very nice about it even though I was just buying postcards. Of course, on the way to the back, I was able to see that I was in a place with an extensive selection even though it's not a huge store. They have a Coffee/Tea Lounge area, too. And they sell other little "goodies" like hand held magnifying "glasses" just like miniature reading glasses, for those who only need something for the fine print these days. A Sales Person in another store in Montgomery Village suggested this store, so they seem to have a good co-operative mind set in this shopping area, helping each other out. and in what other kind of store can you just "hang out"? Usually, you will be looked upon with suspicion if you're just browsing, so I hope real Book Stores, like Libraries, never go away! read more

I agree with two other reviews of Copperfields' poor customer service and lack of loyalty to the local community. I have shopped at their stores for over 30 years since living in Santa Rosa. I was coerced to buy their club card for $25.00 and also give up my rewards card that I had accumulated over several months. They gave me a reusable shopping bag for my trouble (not lovely). Again today I was reminded of why NOT to shop locale and support your independent bookstore...because they treat customers and the community shabby. Our club card "expired", unaware of that since they do not put a date on the cards, and we were refused the 10% discount it would give us. She was quick to offer to sell us a new card, for $25.00 and give us a free $5.00 gift card to spend. What sense does that make, you have to spend money to get a discount. No thanks for our loyalty or for shopping with them, just pay us another $25.00 and we'll give you 10% on every purchase. But we would have to spend a total of $250.00 over the course of one year in order to break even on the purchase of the club card. I'm sure there are "exclusions" for the 10% discount, such as not applicable for the coffee shop, etc. I previously "shopped" online at Amazon for books, and purchased locally, and now will reverse my actions and shop at Copperfield's and purchase at Amazon. read more
