The only compliant, granted a very significant one, was that their Air Conditioning in the private suites was NOT WORKING. There was NO mention of this when we signed in online. Further, NO ONE at the counter mentioned this to either of us when we checked in -- perhaps they thought we might -- somehow‍, not notice, that it was over 100° inside of the private suites/indoors?? When we checked out, I said to my brother "I'm guessing they'll likely 'comp us' for half or maybe all of the range fee (as we bought ammo, targets and supplies too) because of the hours long sweating in the un air-conditioned private suites?" ...But NO, no such accommodation was made. I have to say, THAT was an EXTREMELY POOR CHOICE for Shoot Smart to make. I have been going to that range for many years -- and yes, they knew it at the time. However, I may very well NOT be going back.

One example is when I was there yesterday, looking to purchase a gun which I have purchased many guns there, as I was looking at it and the young lady that was helping me ask me to make sure I keep the gun pointed down, OK I get it but it's empty and has the plastic piece in it and then the next guy as I'm sitting there is also looking to purchase a gun and he has it pointed at her and all over the place for several minutesand doesn't say a word to him! Also with our membership, we get 5% off gun purchases and on my last purchase, I asked them what they could do on a used gun I was looking at just to see if they could come down on price and they gave me a price acting like it was a great deal but shorted me $14 of even the 5% that I'm supposed to get on the gun. These are employee issues and not facility, as far as the facility is concerned I've had no issues.

They are very thorough, helpful safe ,friendly and knowledgeable about the subject matters necessary for LTC. Most of all they are very caring and genuine! Deb and Lee were very efficient and organized. It was fun being in the class. Both have a great sense of humor. Especially, loved Lee's jokes! I know there are LTC Online classes available out there. But in my opinion, if you have the time , and you're in the DFW area. I highly recommend taking their class. It's definitely worth it!!

Contrary to the opinion of "Ryan" this is the safest outdoor range I've been to. It's been there…read morefor 45 years and I've been going to it for more than 20. Everyone who works there is professional with safety as the literal top priority. I taught my kids to shoot there. In past ~5 years or so, builders have built homes about a mile away. Northwest ISD has built a school. Country acreage and fields still surround on all sides. Two bullets were found at the new school, and the assumption is that it was bullets from the public range which has tall berms and does not directly have line of aim to the school. This range's presence is not a safety issue. For folks are concerned about this, consider having NISD foot the bill to build bigger berms or indoor shooting range for Quail Creek. Why not? NISD is already spending our tax money like water.

Northwest ISD says it tried to work with the owner on safety improvements and couldn't even get a commitment. The district isn't asking to shut the range down. They're asking for reasonable safety measures to keep bullets from leaving the property. How is that even controversial? Every gun owner knows you are responsible for where your rounds go. If there's a credible possibility rounds from my range could be reaching a middle school, I'm doing everything possible to make sure it can never happen again. I'm not making the school district sue me. I support gun ranges. I want this one to stay open. But responsible gun ownership means taking safety seriously, especially when kids are involved. Fix the damn problem.

My experience led me to conclude this organization is one of the better training locations I've seen. They are modeling their program after 141 requirements. In fact, I was told by my CFII they are working to get that approval. Which to me means, a preflight briefing, the flight, and a debriefing with proper feedback and expectations for the next ground and flight instruction lessons. They use a fleet of Piper Warrior 151 and 161 aircraft all equipped the same. A Garmin G3X with a G5 backup heading attitude system, 375 GPS, and G500 autopilot, and a secondary Garmin NAVCOM. The advanced technology panel will help transition their students to the airlines. They have high standards for their students and more importantly instructors. In fact, while I passed my check ride, I would have to up my game to be as good as my instructor was. Aviation skills weren't necessarily the problem, his ability to recall and also find information was top notch. Even more impressive since the FAA has spread out their information sources into dozens of handbooks and advisory circulars. Plane availability wasn't a problem since the fleet is common. We did have to change tail numbers for maintenance squawks but that is to be expected at any operation. Part of what sets this organization apart was that fleet commonality. I've done training in the past where the planes were all the same type, but configured completely different. It's very difficult to get good at flying a plane when instruments and secondary controls have different configurations. Overall, I had a very good experience and would highly recommend them. They get you used to the controls and how the steering works & how to read the gauges. One on one instruction. Daniel was the instructor he had. Very friendly! This is Great for determining if it's a hobby you want to get into! Or just a fun experience! I was able to stay on the ground and watch from below and take pictures and video!
