My family and I pass Copperopolis multiple times a year while on our way to and from Tuolumne to visit friends. We've stopped in a few times and tried their different restaurants -- we stopped in today to grab some gas and coffee for the drive home. It was fairly quiet except for the motorcycle riders outside of Griff's BBQ. I believe there might have been a cyclist race going on behind the Town Square too, but there wasn't a lot of foot traffic. They have a bbq restaurant, a coffee and ice cream shop, a post office, the Governor's Manson and even a hotel -- there is something different to check out for everyone! Everything is fairly priced from what I've seen and doesn't seem like they hike up their prices for tourists which is nice. Everyone is very friendly and they offer lots of options for some sightseeing -- it's definitely a neat place to get out and stretch your legs! The Town Square is always clean and picturesque! Stop in for a visit the next time you're driving by! read more

To be honest every store I've ever been to here whether it's been the gas station the ice cream shop, the clothing store the selection may be good and delicious and the value is okay for some place! It's just the service that gets me an off feeling it seems like they are not very friendly here at all, I understand everyone had their off days but it's kind of continuous when I have stopped here, I probably will not return anytime soon unless I am out here and desperate for gas. It is adorable hopefully they can learn to smile and be happy to customers :) read more

I would give 0 stars if I could. Our family stayed in Copper Valley for three days. The property was nice, but the experience was disappointing. A woman named Kaylin was rude when my kids used the restroom at the Town Square. As an Asian family, we felt uncomfortable and possibly discriminated against. Some comments in the home disclosures were biased and unwelcoming. An agent named "Perkins" was also rude once she realized English isn't my first language. We were thinking about buying a home here, but not anymore. read more

Weird. Copperopolis is a real estate developer invented "town". This is a brand new "downtown oldtown" and then empty unsold lots. Stopped, had lunch, will review the restaurant separately to respect the pleasant attentive staff........but do not be fooled by Google maps that this is an Old West Town! Ha! Best part is the Old Hotel where if you look through the front doors all you see is empty space out the back doors and grass. Should be in a movie from the 80's. read more

I recently had the displeasure of meeting the mayor of this "town". First let me start by saying, I love copperopolis town square, from its AI generated businesses, its post-apocalyptic atmosphere, and the spooky Bible verses printed on the pizza boxes, it is the perfect place to go if you are trying to trigger and massive panic attack. If you're looking for a place to go that just feels "off", this is the place for you. I highly recommend. That being said, please keep in mind that the mayor of this town is a freak. I went there for a work trip and was told to meet one-on-one with the mayor and his assistant and tour the town. Right off the bat, the vibes were WEIRD. I held out my hand to shake his, and he stared blankly at me for a long, tense moment. My eyes darted between the mayor and his assistant, who nodded encouragingly at him. He proceeded to lean in and LICK my hand. I tried not to scream. I told myself that perhaps this is just a strange custom in Northern California and tried to brush it off. As we began the tour I quickly realized that the assistant would be the one speaking to me the entire time, not the mayor. At this point I was beyond weirded out and ready to leave, so I went along with it. Any time I tried to engage with the mayor, he just started blankly into space, breathing heavily, and drooling. I genuinely believe he is on drugs. As we walked through the very empty town, I tried making conversation with mayor copper many times, and he remained silent. Finally I stopped and looked at him and asked if he was ok, and he just did a big stretch and continued walking! I decided I needed to leave before it was too late for me. I turned to say goodbye to him, and I swear to god that man looked me dead in the eye and took a dump in the middle of the parking lot. I RAN to my car, hopped in, and sped off. When I looked in the rear view mirror I could see the mayor begin to chase me on all fours. This continued for over 3 miles. Overall weird place. Pizza was pretty good though. read more

While strolling along visit the art gallery and the boutiques. You can start your day with breakfast at Baldi's. Then a lunch at Gold Dust Pizza. Time to relax at The Tipsy Frog enjoying wines from around the world. Then finish the night with dinner at Griffs, Barbecue and Grill. This place is interesting to say the least...it looks great but is a bit of a ghost town. Think Back to the Future town square with some quaint restaurants and stores. Makes for some good photo ops and is a nice break if you are driving on 4 to the snow. Found out from talking to one of the store owners that they stopped construction after phase 1 and there was supposed to a phase 2 which included 2000 homes. Not sure how this location could have supported that, I guess that's why phase 2 has not happened yet. read more

This is a cute town square modeled after Back to the Future. It features concerts in September and a variety of other events during the year. Gold Dust Pizza and the coffee shop are my favorite spots. The ice cream shop is good too. The square is mostly quiet and not a lot going on and many stores have weird hours, but the events such as the September concerts bring hundreds of people. If you're in the area and want gas, pizza, coffee, or ice cream it's worth a quick stop. I hope they bring a grocery store there or something to bring in more business. read more

We read about the Independence Day celebration held on 7/3/22 at the Town Square with fireworks starting at 9PM. So we drove from Modesto to watch the fireworks. We arrived about 8:30 PM and noticed so many families parked in the parking lot with their chairs out to watch the fireworks. You could see the excitement in the children's faces as they awaited the firework show. But 9PM came and went with no firework displays. We checked to make sure we had the date and time correct - and we did! Then we saw family after family packing up their chairs and leaving. You could hear the anger in their voices as they drove all the way there to see a firework show only to see a few "safe and sane" fireworks. We see better fireworks in our neighborhood. I will think twice about ever attending another event in the Town Square! read more

I've TRIED to shop, dine and stroll at the shops at Copperopolis Town Square 3 times now as I'm passing by. The merchants have loose hours and today there was no power. I keep stopping and doing absolutely no shopping or dining. I know they can't control power outages, but maybe a cute upscale shopping center in the middle of nowhere just isn't such a great concept. read more

I love introducing my Out-of-Town and International guests to this quaint little town; it's always a hit. From the Chili Cook Off, to the Hot Copper Classic Car Show, all the way to the Outdoor Concerts, and Christmas Tree lighting ... The Square is a slice of heaven. My guests continually rave about Griff's, Copper Valley Cafe, The Tipsy Frog Wine Bar, and Gold Dust Pizza. They also get a kick out of the Yummy Ha Ha Ice Cream Shop. They come back with delightful finds at Ally's Attic, and then there's Salon Soleil!!! It doesn't take long for travelers to realize Copperopolis is not just the Gateway to Yosemite ... but a pretty spectacular destination in its self. read more

There aren't many places to stop between Stockton and Angels Camp other than Copperopolis. This small town Square was a surprise. I was expecting to see the four Civil War era buildings that are on the National Register of Historic places when I turned off highway 4. Instead I found this pretty little town square. It looked pretty busy when we first drove in. There were a lot of motorcycles parked around the square. By the time we left they were gone. There are a few shops, several restaurants and other businesses around the square. My guess is that it might seem like a modern day ghost town during the week; Copperopolis is really in the middle of nowhere. read more

I love the city of Copperopolis, but the town square looks like a movie set and is hardy worth going to. It's so fake looking in the Mother Load region of California. There are few stores and less then a handful of restaurants. It looks like some developers wanted to make loads of money hoping it would attract tourists. (It's usually more of a ghost town) I'd pass it by and if you want to really experience somewhere that is authentic to the region, continue on to Sonora, and the towns along highway 49. read more

This is a new town square. We are used to old town squares so it was nice to walk around this newly developed town square which was developed in 2007. If you want to get away from a crowded city, come to Copperopolis Town Square. Surprisingly there are very few tourists here. You can sample olive oil here and this is a great place to shop and dine without standing in long lines. read more

This place creeps me out! The shops are fine and all, some of them are pretty great, but the "town" itself is creep-tastic! As someone else mentioned (although they meant it as a compliment I think), it's like being on a movie set-- as in everything is FAKE!! It's as if the Disney crew came in a built a "western town" set. And it's nearly deserted most of the time, which always reminds me of some kind of after-the-zombie-apocolypse scene, where everything is pretty much untouched, even the piped in music is still playing, but nothing lives! I'm expecting some crazy un-dead to come running out of a shop and start chasing me! I grew up in the area so it's especially weird to me to see something like this in Copper, since when we were growing up, Copper was kinda like the ghetto. I remember when the land this "town square" sits on was just an empty field. There are some big beautiful homes in the area and all, but for the most part there are a lot of meth-heads since rent is so cheep (because it's hotter than $HIT in the summer, and no body else is willing to live there!). If you are into pre-packaged, insincere, fakeness- this is the town for you! If, however, you would like a little more authentic experience, you should go to pretty much any other town in the area. Murphys, Angels Camp, Sonora, Twain Harte, Sutter Creek, Jackson, all have wonderful downtown areas... and guess what?... They're all actually from the Gold Rush era! read more

I am a huge sucker for small towns for so many reasons. They are always beautiful and old timey looking. They usually have an amazing variety of antique shops. Small towns come equipped with small town eateries and no fast food chains. Finally, small towns almost always have the nicest people in the world running them. Copperopolis isn't just a small town, it's a tiny town. We walked around the entire town, taking our time, and still managed to finish in less than 30 minutes. We stopped a few great shops, including a store that specializes in olive oil and even gives free tasting. We also stopped at an art store that sells both supplies and works of art. Both were very cute and exactly what I want from a small town like this. That was pretty much the jist of it. A few other stores and restaurants were open, but a vast majority of the spaces were empty. Not exactly a booming town if you catch my drift, but cute none the less. We didn't stay long and instead just kept making our way down the 4, but I did enjoy my very brief stay in the town with the very fun name to say. read more

I love Copperopolis because it's just so bizarre. It reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode with the music playing in the well manicured park, the beautifully perfect buildings, yet not a single soul in sight. Actually, there are some people there once you start looking around. There's a few businesses open among the empty buildings. Griff's is a good restaurant, and on our last visit we noticed a new wine bar and made a mental note to stop in next time. Honestly, they must be losing money hand over fist on this development, but for some reason I stop in every time I'm in the neighborhood just to see if there's anything new, and to kind of trip out on oddness of it. read more

Stopped by here yesterday (holiday Monday) after going up the Calaveras Big Trees Park. Seems like I had the same reaction as some Yelpers who reviewed this place several months ago. Yup...it's C-R-E-E-P-Y. Ghost town creepy. Not the dilapidated, rotting-away kind but more like an abandoned-shiny-new-amusement-park-in-the-middle-of-nowhere kind. Everything is nice and pretty and clean...and deserted. Um, where are the people? There are several shops but the only ones open were the art shop and Griff's BBQ Grill (will have a separate review about this place later). Granted we came here after 5pm and it was a weekday holiday to boot so probably shops close earlier. There were a steady stream of people coming to the bbq place, who I think are mostly locals. One Yelper mentioned this place is like a movie set, which was just what I was thinking when I heard the clock tower chimed at 6pm. Whoa, to quote other Yelpers: Back to the Future! That was cool. Although, I can't help thinking "Uh-oh, is it time to let the zombies out? Should I grab my kid and high tail it out of here?!" I guess I'd like to see this place again when there's an event going on or just people hanging about and enjoying the day. The buildings are new and nicely done, and the other shops are probably interesting to visit and browse, but don't people hang out here often? Anyway, I'm giving it three stars - one, for that Back To the Future feeling it gave me for a few seconds; two, the empty town square where my kid enjoyed running around (anything that amuses my 1 1/2 year-old for more than 20 minutes is gold for me); and three, for its public restroom that's equipped with stainless steel toilets! Yeah, don't laugh, if you've been pee-ing behind bushes in the wilderness, you'd worship the stainless steel toilet. Not that I pee-d behind bushes or anything, it's just a metaphor, ya hear! So if you're having a road trip out to Highway 4, swing by the place and check it out. It can be a nice photo-op place where you won't have to worry about other people photo-bombing you (because it's deserted). Or rest stop where you won't have to worry about the long lines to use the bathrooms (again, because it's deserted). But for authentic local downtown experience, you might want to explore what the other towns have to offer. read more

We were on our way back from Yosemite on a Sunday...and drove through Copperopolis, needed to stop for the kids and saw the signs for Town Square....PERFECT - right? Not so much - it was down right creepy. In such a cute-straight off of Disney Main street way-the stores should have been open, kids riding bikes and people strolling but just the opposite - the sidewalks were rolled up and no one - no one was around. It was like out of a SciFi movie - seemed very unreal. So to the town planners and elected officials of Copperopolis - Please open your stores and embrace the cute appeal that you have - your town is starting to be known as creepy. read more

Santana Row in the foothills. But empty. And yes, creepy. I could not stop talking about it to my travel partners. It's amazingly poorly planned and conceived. At 12:00 noon, on a "first-good-snow-of-the-season" Saturday, the "Square" was empty. As a former business owner, who paid $1.50 a sq ft for 2000 sq ft, I had to wonder: How does the almost empty coffee shop (with the most burnt-tasting brewed coffee I have tasted in years) and 5-6 employees running around doing stuff, stay open? Better yet, how do all the other rather large-ish nail salons, nick knack stores, and ice cream shops STAY CLOSED...And STILL PAY THEIR RENT? Who owns this place? Better yet... who subsidizes it? If it's not subsidized, then I feel really worry for the owners who got duped into signing multi-year leases and are now eating their shorts. The Eighth wonder of the world. There's even at least one road that heads out to an empty field that appears to be space for future expansion. Only gets a second star because of the Grill place. The salad was actually a bit eclectic for being a restaurant in a former copper-rush town: Arugula and young greens--not just a slice of iceberg. The ribs were... decent. The service was real good and authentic. Too bad that place is not on it's own. read more

I've lived in Copperopolis for over half of my life now, and I was skeptical at first when this Town Square seemed to rise out of the ground. It took me a long time to actually get around to the place, but when I did, WOW! There are so many different shops and places to grab a snack. I am actually employed part time in the square now, so I get to enjoy the atmosphere all the time. read more

My rating is based on their Saturday summer concert series. Great place to watch a concert, especially when there is a nice breeze. Pretty simple overview: Pay $5 to support the 4-H kids when you park, bring your cooler, lawn chair, blanket and enjoy. Wish there were more food booths set up. Went yesterday (saw Journey Revisited) and only tent food options were BBQ and kettle corn. Sound system could have been better, but I think this was the band's fault not the venue. We got there about an hour before start and it was already packed. Not sure if this was because of the band, or if this is the norm for the concerts? Wife and I were a little perplexed that there didn't seem to be any type of law enforcement there, but maybe that is a good thing, because EVERYONE had coolers, were enjoying adult beverages, and themselves! Would like to see someone clamping down on the kids using the sidewalks as a racetrack for their scooters, but overall we had a great time. Lots of vacant buildings around, so outside of the concerts, it looks like not many patrons come through. Looking forward to seeing the AC/DC cover band in a few weeks. read more

Visited the town square for the second time in a year. Sad that some of the stores that were three last year no long there. The town square is pretty much of a ghost town now with just a few stores and restaurants. We went on a Sunday and it was a ghost town with piped in music playing. The square is clean, and will give the very clean public toilets a shout out. Doubt we will re-visit as there really is not enough there to afford the drive. read more

Well here it is late summer, September, 2014. Mid-week ( on a Thursday )..We we're on our way out of the mountains on Hwy. 4....Been on a camping trip at Highlands Lake. We had previously stopped at Copperopopolis Town Square once a few years back. And yep, it's still deserted, and has that creepy feel to it. Nothing has changed.. Everything the other Yelp reviews have said are right on the money! Yes the Town Square and the whole area are WAY out there, in the golden brown rolling hills. Oak trees scattered about.. Someone had a big dream and invested a huge fortune to build this small "village"..I poked around in a ladies clothing boutique, a kitchen shoppe, and we bought a few things in a pet store. Also enjoyed some good coffee and pastries from the mini-Starbucks type of store. They also offered free WiFi. Same piped in music all over the Square, it all just seems surreal. But we find ourselves kind of feeling sorry for the businesses. The bigger cities of Stockton and Modesto are just down the road and folks need to stop by Town Square more often. I hear concerts are held here occasionally during the spring & summer. That's a good thing! We will always stop when traveling the Hwy 4! read more

The Town Square is a failure and a disgrace to the good people that live in Copperopolis. Hardly any stores, most have sat empty for many, many years. Rent must be too dam high. Can't the owners do something to improve it from the deserted ghost town it is? You'd think the idiot who put this together would have at least put a motel or RV park or some type of overnight accomadations to get at least a few people around so it doesn't seem like a deserted Hollywood movie set????? I mean really, no place to stay overnight so why would anyone hang around. I hear there's a great fishing lake on the property, but the owner can't even see the potential, what a bunch of dummies. Castle and Crook seems to have forgotten about this project. Dave Haley should consider bulldozing the Town Square and starting all over again. read more

My husband and I happened upon this "Gold Mine" on a motorcycle ride one afternoon. We stopped at Griff's BBQ and it was fantastic. Then we walked over to the General Store and discovered all kinds of unique merchandise. I bought a few one-of-a-kind gifts while we were there. There is a wonderful, huge gazebo in the middle of the town square and one of the buildings has a clock tower on top. We thought we were on the movie set of "Back to the Future" ! It was a fun visit to this quaint part of Copperopolis and we definitely plan to return. There's a coffee shop, Italian restaurant, and many specialty shops including a salon and dog store. Great town square, everybody, for the most part is friendly and will treat you with kindness. A great place to take the family. Only reason why I took off one star is for the Griffs restaurant, their customer service is god awful.
