It's very small on the inside, compared to other do-it-yourself ceramic shops that I've been to. But honestly, I found that quite quaint and cozy. I find that their ceramic pieces were pretty affordable compared to some of the other ceramic shops I've been to in Austin. They have their paints separated by brights and detailed versus more earthy tone colors. And unfortunately, they tell you that you shouldn't mix them because they won't come out looking good. So you have to figure out what you want your piece to look like before hand, bright with small details? Or more earthy tones? My husband went with the bright and details, while my friend and I decided to go for earthy tones. My husband painted a wall switch plate, I painted a feather bowl, and my friend painted a mug. They were all done and ready to be picked up about a week and a half later. And they came out great! I enjoyed myself, and my husband and I have already discussed coming back perhaps for a date day :)

Luckily, I found Art+ Academy and it has been great! I have a very happy kiddo now since she has her real art classes. Here's the scoop: 1. Small class sizes. They monitor how many kids are in each class to make sure the student to teacher ratio is always low. The kid's all learn from each other, as well as get a lot of individual guidance to help their skills develop. 2. Classes for kids are separated into small age groups to keep the learn levels on the same playing field. The classes range from 4-5, 5-7, 7-9, and 9-12. It's nice that 12 year olds don't have to be with the 5 year olds. Peer groups help everyone learn better and faster. 3. They also do teen and adult classes, so really anyone and every can take classes if they are interested in them. 4. The teachers, at least the ones I have met, seem to really care about the students. They offer help and guidance, but still let each student do their own artistic styles. They really want each person to believe in their own artistic abilities. 5. The price seems very reasonable for the quality of the classes. If you or know someone who is interested in art classes, I highly recommend Art + Academy.

The owner also sells paintings and jewelry from local artists, and other small items. It looks like he's offering a summer camp as well. The only negative thought I have is that you have to sign a waiver AFTER you pay (and there are no refunds, but you can reschedule). It would be nice to have the waiver beforehand to know exactly what you have to agree to in order to participate in the experience. The waiver was pretty standard (permission to use photos on social media, resin is sticky and can make a mess, etc), but I didn't like that I didn't know about the waiver and wasn't able to read it until we had paid. There is also not an OPT-OUT option for the permission to use photos, which is not okay with me, but since we had already paid, I was only going to object if pictures were taken. Luckily, there were no pics taken during our time, so it's a non issue, but it could be for some people. Overall, it's a great new art space!

UPDATE: Got a call from the manager of the camp at Twin Lakes and he was very nice and apologetic…read moreand promised to give me a refund for the concession money we put in my kid's account. Apparently the sky trail concession stand was closed (but yet they still had it included in the email to send money for your campers!?) He also promised to send me an email with his direct contact info so if I decided to give the camp another try, I could get ahold of him since the camp director never bothered to respond to me. Well, I never heard back from him and I didn't get that promised refund! I called a week later and he processed the refund and offered to send me that email. I told him this was very bad business and now my daughter definitely wouldn't be coming back. He didn't really care and gave the excuse that they have 600 kids coming through the camp each week and he was so busy. It would have taken him no more than 5 minutes to make this right and refund my money. When a place can't handle the lowest level of customer care and business, I'm definitely not going to trust my child to be in their care. We were so excited to try out YMCA Twin Lakes this year because we have only heard amazing things. Unfortunately, our experience was NOT amazing. It would have been salvageable if my concerns were answered and addressed but it's been over two weeks now and the director has yet to call or email me back. I called twice, texted once, and emailed twice. If I can't get ahold of a camp director with issues, it does not make me feel comfortable having my child in their care. We did a "cake decorating" camp and the first day they used markers to color a worksheet with a cupcake on it. Pretty lame but thought maybe they didn't have much time the first day. Second day, they used mashed potatoes to practice piping icing. Third day, air clay sculpting. They didn't end up actually touching real cake and icing until Thursday and Friday. The camp just didn't deliver on the magical cake decorating experice we were expecting. All could have also been forgiven if they could have been doing some of the amazing activities provided on campus. My camper struggled with the heat, long lines and ultimately, running out of time for activities and not getting a turn. They also only got into the water twice the whole 5 HOT days. Very disappointed with the camp but even more disappointed that I reached out with concerns and they never bothered to answer. There are too many amazing camps in Austin to bother with one that doesn't seem to care or acknowledge that they dropped the ball on this camp. To make matters even more frustrating, we recieved an email with a link to put money on our kid's account to buy popsicles, gatorade and snacks throughout the day. I put $10 on my kid's account and she was never afforded the opportunity to even visit the snack shop while at camp! It's non-refundable and I reached out to also request a refund and have yet to hear back on that as well. Couldn't recommend it to anyone.

Additionally, they had things made of wood such as turned bowls and clever utensils. They had some beautiful ornaments, made out of ceramic, I bought one of those. It was $50. They had plates and platters and more things than I can name here. They even had jewelry. It's all handmade and beautiful. I look forward to coming back and buying some Christmas gifts. In addition to the art portion of the business, there is a workshop section where people can go to classes and learn ceramics or painting and other things. The woman who was working was very helpful and kind. I look forward to frequency this gallery regularly.
