Just wrapped up a deep tissue massage with Mark N. at Core Wellness Chiropractic. He was extremely thoughtful about how he asked questions based on the intake form I filled out online prior to the appointment. I went in for a massage because I've been distance running for a few years and neglecting to really treat my body to what it needs. I highlighted some pain/tightness in my Achilles and calf and Mark made sure to spend extra time on my legs and made sure I was ok with trimming down the time spent on my arms to really give the problem areas what they needed. He provided a lot of extra ideas about recovery, stretching and mobility exercises that would help address my issues. He definitely is very passionate about his work and extremely knowledgeable about massage, anatomy and athletics. Dr. Finnegan is my own personal chiropractor,and the preferred Chripractor for my Piedmont and Oakland clients. (I'm not currently seeing her because, unlike some chiropractors who will have you coming to them forever, Dr Finnegan actually fixed me up with one adjustment.) Dr. Carolyn Finnegan is actually a chiropractic biophysicist which means she works on the whole body: tennis elbow, TMJ, etc. And she works in conjunction with Pilates instructors to teach her clients exercises to help retain the postural adjustment. I was referred to Dr Finnegan by Randy at Oakland Manual Therapy, another truly amazing healer. Since I could remember I had issues with my left shoulder and neck. I just assumed it was tension. And certainly stress made it worse. But now in my fourth decade of life I had started to have a lot more pain. Numbness and tingling in my hands as well as a general fatigue and malaise that includes increasing food digestion issues. It reached a point where I couldn't eat at all during the day and I'd eat at night since the fatigue that followed was at bedtime. I continued to get worse with no diagnosis. No RA or anything else they could find. Then I just happened to mention I had neck pain to my doctor which quite frankly was the least of my symptoms. I had an X-ray of my cervical spine. It showed degenerative disease of my vertebrae as well as reverse lordosis of my neck. I showed it to Randy who then recommended chiro bio physics. Yeah. Never heard of it either. But I was at my wits end. What the hell. I went in and Dr Finnegan ordered xrays of the rest of my spine. She then said it looked like I'd had a car accident or some major trauma for my neck to look like it did. I've never had a car accident like that. I did however have an accident at 6 where I landed on my chin face down on concrete. I remember that vividly. I didn't break anything at the time, I cried, brushed myself off and went on with my life. But she said that could have done it given it would have jammed the base of my skull into the top of my spine. Kids are resilient. Fast forward to my forties Im clearly in pain. So I take her recommendation for three decompression and traction's per week for three months. I agree. It has been a month and a half. I honestly don't know how to describe the improvement. Just this week I've started to eat during the day without fatigue. I'm eating more variety of foods. I had eliminated all kinds of foods from my diet until I was contemplating if I should just go on a diet of steak because that didn't seem to trigger an inflammatory reaction as much as everything else including veggies and fruit. Gluten soy nightshades legumes grains have been all off the table for a year. I'm aghast that I am finding a treatment outside of normal medical channels and one that had never occurred to me. I'd shied away from chiropractic care because it wasn't "advised" and it wasn't covered. I know basic biology. I understand the importance of the spine, the nerves that flow from the various points of the vertebrae and obviously any impingement on those nerves can impact body function such as digestion, pain such as sciatica, afterall everything is connected and function through neurology. I have spine degenerative disease. And those bones encasing my nerves are being impacted. So the decompression is working. Dr Finnegan isn't just snapping and cracking my back. This is realigning on a very micro level in some cases the bones of my body so they don't impede soft tissue function. It's like realigning the sagging support beams of your body so all the soft tissue it encases can go back to their respective places in your body. I don't just have more motion in my neck from the decompression. I actually feel like a veil of constant pain lifting, a sort of lightness. I'm looking forward to the next month and a half and for the first time in a loooong time I'm really hopeful. read more

First time seeing a chiropractor and it went really well. Went for a dropped left foot. VA hospital couldnt find the problem causing it so I came here and she found the nerve which is severely damaged. She tried everything she could but unfortunately was not able to correct it after two visits and instead of booking more visits informed me that only surgery would be able to correct it. I am now able to go back to VA hospital knowing the exact nerve that is creating the problem and hopefully get feeling and movement back to my left leg and foot after surgery. Shes awsome at what she does and I highly recommend her. I sought out Dr. Finnegan's help after suffering extreme pain from head and neck injuries and feeling really desperate to get non-drug help. The pain had grown insurmountable and was exacerbating long-term tension migraine headaches. In my first visit, Dr. Finnegan made astonishing adjustments to my neck that increased my 30% range of motion, to normal ROM. She did some other adjustments to address "bursitis" and a shoulder injury, as well, with great success. I have to say that I've always been somewhat incredulous at chiropractic services, because the practitioners I've seen always did a kind of rote series of adjustments and rarely focused on specific areas of need. Dr. Finnegan does not do a rote series; she does a thorough intake and works on those areas that are critical. Of course, because the body works holistically, she also adjusts connecting areas, and places of weakness. Overall, I'd give her 10 stars if I could; believe it or not after several years of chronic, increasing pain, I finally got that first day of 100% pain relief. No wonder she's been voted Oakland's Best for five years running. Although it will take some follow-up and work on my part to fix the problem, without her help, I would be living in misery.
