My anniversary is on St. Patrick's Day, so my husband and I typically try to find something with an Irish flair to celebrate the occasion. At the time this establishment was built, we lived nearby and were extremely excited to have an Irish option so close. We've been several times and enjoy ourselves a lot. I will warn anyone reading this far in, though, that this isn't the place to go for really authentic "Irish" food. It also isn't where I would go if I wanted a nice, full meal. Their menu is full of good appetizers that pair well with their brews, which is what they do really well. A couple years ago, we celebrated a milestone anniversary here, but this time we stepped it up a little: we got a little private table inside a barrel in their courtyard, and it was a very cozy and wonderful setting for our anniversary celebration. The very best thing about this establishment, however, is their service. My husband always plans ahead for our anniversary celebration, and has worked closely with the management of Cork and Barrel on more than one occasion to make our evening extra special. From flower delivery directly to our table, to a private location so we could visit uninterrupted, the staff has always been very accommodating and helpful in making his vision come to life. Every time we return the experience gets worse :( so sad for this area as there are not many fancier sit-down places to eat that are not chain food restaurants. I live here to Not Pay in city Austin prices and the quality and portion sizes on top of location does not make sense for these price points and portions. Be ready to wait for a while for anything you order unless it is at the outside bar. This place is always overfilled and very close tables which makes it so loud it's difficult to have conversations. There are a bunch of people that stand at the desk in front and they are all overwhelmed and having to check and run around for what their availability is and what's going on constantly. Seems like they could benefit from a better communication system for staff. There is a lot of space and beautiful inside and out of the building, but it is very noisy. They have bands that play outside which is nice. The craft beer is $7 a pint for their own beer. Last time we were here we got our menu items pretty cold, especially the fries which seemed frozen and the waitress took it back without complaint and brought them back very quickly as it it was all nuked real quick? This is a ginormous place! I was expecting a small pub atmosphere. It was more like a hall you'd have an Oktoberfest celebration in. Very loud and far from a "date" venue. I will say it was filled with men, though I expect most of them were married and hanging out with their work friends-so, sorry ladies, not a great place to meet your "next Mr. Right". I was meeting a friend here, and it was a chilly rainy day. We got a seat next to one of their fireplaces which was a reprieve from the gray, cold day. There were lots of beers to choose from. I tried a tropical IPA, and my friend had a lighter Pilsner. They were both delicious. We shared an order of fish and chips with an additional piece of fish. The food was hot and flavorful, though smaller pieces of fish than I was expecting. The service was very good. I'd say this was a "miss" for me because I prefer smaller venues. The family wanted to go out for dinner on a whim one evening. We live in Hutto, so there's not many options when it comes to restaurant. One place that has come up a few times and is relatively close by, is Cork & Barrel. The place is classed as an Irish Pub, and with my wife's father being from Belfast, we thought it would be a good spot to try. The place is huge, with a massive outside dining and playing area helps give it a communal and social feel. We were seated inside, in an area which felt more like a bar, than a pub. On the other side of the building, there is a darker, more cozy feeling area which we would've preferred. My wife instantly ordered the Irish Stew, as it's a benchmark item for her, when trying somewhere Irish themed. She went with a cup of it, as a tester, and it had a really nice thick consistency to it, and tasted great. What a good start! Curried Fries and Smoked Wings were appetizers ordered for the table. Both went quickly, with the Curried Fries being a particular favourite for myself and my eldest daughter. From an Irish food point of view, outside of the stew, there's not much else on the menu that could be classed as "Irish". Somebody pointed out Fish n Chips, but that wasn't doing it for my wife (more an English thing), so I ordered it. The cod was nice, and the batter was crispy and not too thick (as it usually is here in the US). The chips were a letdown, though as they tasted frozen, when they should've been fresh hand-cut, deep-fried thick chips...not French fries My kids seemed to enjoy their food and the general experience. I finished off my dinner with Ice cream and Apple pudding-like dessert. It was really nice. Will order again. First and foremost the service at the bar and the drinks we had were 4 * a mimosa and a michelada. It was the food that was way underwhelming. Fish and chips and pork belly appetizer. The fish was heavily breaded and thick and as we all know when it's thick it crispy on the outside and mushy on the inside. The fish itself was dry. The sauce was tasty but not traditional tarter, and the chips were just seasoned fries from a box. The pork belly was almost burnt and I guess they were supposed to be burnt ends? But they were very dry and the flavor was not good. Over all I would not return, I would give it a 3.5 if I could but I can't. Statistically, the number of people calling themselves Irish in the Census is far larger than the number humanly possible from the people who were Irish in the last census, the number of kids they had and the number of migrants from Ireland itself. So every decade, a lot of people change their mind and decide they are Irish. They look for authentically Irish pubs and places they can celebrate Saint Patrick's Day. Cork and Barrel caters to this need. * * * Ironically, Cork and Barrel is as authentic an Irish pub as one could possibly find. I say ironically, because Cork and Barrel does Mexican tequila drinks, German Giant Pretzels, Louisiana Cajun Seafood, Caesar Salad, Poblano Corn Chowder, American Hamburgers, an American Kale Winter Salad, Pizza, Spicy Wings and ... oh yes ... an Irish Stew. Nothing could be more Irish ... Because for real, these are the dishes that pubs are serving in Dublin and Belfast. And in Paris, Lyon, Singapore, London, Bergen, Frankfurt and Athens and Maastricht. Bar food has globalized. Everyone everywhere wants tacos and nachos and hamburgers and ribs and salads for the ladies and buffalo wings for the guys. There are three dishes that reflect Americans' stereotypes of Irish food: Irish Stew, Shepherd's Pie and Fish and Chips. They have Guinness Stout and Smithwick's Irish Ale. And six zillion beers from Austin and four they make themselves. At least you don't have to worry about getting into an argument about whether Micheal Martin is the best or worst Taoiseach to govern the home patch in the last twenty years. * * * How is the food and drink at Cork and Barrel? 50-50. 50 percent fine. 50 percent meh. Prices are high (although not outlandish.) But I ran into too many duds from the 50% meh side to really want to spend Cork and Barrel level money in the future. Examples: I had two drinks. A wonderful smoke and fire margarita - and a dull as dishwater desperado - their version of an espresso martini. Their charcuterie plate had 50 percent good items and 50 percent boring items. I have had charcuterie plates all over Austin. In nearly every competing bar or restaurant that serves a charcuterie plate in the Austin Metro - you get 100 percent wonderful stuff with no duds or dead items. My favorite charcuterie plate is at Easy Tiger. But lots of wonderful meat appetizer plates exist. Charcuterie plates are expensive no matter where you get them. But you get consistent high quality everywhere except Cork and Barrel. My eating companion liked his jack and coke, German Pretzel and Smashburger. But I was travelling with a buddy who likes everything as long as it is filling. * * * I don't live in Round Rock so I am unlikely to make the trek back up here. But if I lived in Round Rock, there are so many good places right in downtown Round Rock - that I wouldn't feel the need to do my drinking on Route 79. And for what it is worth - if I am over at Brushy Creek, the Copper Top is a fine place. Cork and Barrel has two nice artificial fires, and very cool urinals made of old brass vats. But there is more reliable value for your money elsewhere. read more

I came to this location yesterday for a Mothers Day brunch with the Things. I had a reservation for 2:15 and showed at 2 PM with the assumption that this location would be at capacity. This was not the case. We were seated within a few minutes of arrival at the table. Once seated, we waited 14 minutes to be greeted and for the waitress to take our drink orders. The Things and I each selected different items from the buffet to try to ensure that we were able to sample multiple items. Unfortunately, all items sampled were less than stellar. London Broil Generally, a London broil is generally a tough cut of meat, but it has great flavor. If prepared correctly, it becomes a flavorful steak with a nice beefy taste and tender chew. This London Broil was tender but tasteless. The gravy paired with this was mushroom and was bland. The mushrooms lacked the salt and butter one comes to expect in a basic gravy. Salmon It's simple to deduce if salmon is overcooked by flaking it with a fork. When salmon is perfectly cooked, it flakes easily into large, tender pieces. Overcooking salmon makes it a little more difficult to flake the filet, and the flakes tend to have a visibly dry, shredded appearance. The salmon here was dried out. Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes The potatoes were dried out and clumpy. Unwanted lumps are a result of mashing undercooked potatoes, so the key to avoiding lumps is cooking the potatoes correctly. Aside from the poor showing of food, I was charged a 20% large party fee for 3 people. This was not mentioned in the reservation that a fee of this magnitude would be charged for a buffet for 3 people. The speed or service, poor caliber of food and mandatory 20% tip for being served 2 sodas, and a glass of champagne when we stacked our own plates for the busser is not warranted. Total $173.78 for three buffet plates of food and three drinks. Regarding the gratuity, a businesses must disclose their automatic gratuity policy to customers in advance. This can be done on the menu, on a sign at the entrance of the restaurant, or verbally by the server. None of this was communicated to me beforehand nor was this noted at the time of the reservation, nor on the brunch sign nor by the server. read more

This is a solid option in Round Rock when you're looking for a place with decent drinks. We came here during brunch and had a great time. The pretzel is so soft and delicious. That garlic cream cheese was to die for and we ended up taking what was leftover to pair with some bagel. I would buy extra of that just to have on hand! Not pictured but definitely the star was my sister's shrimp and grits. Seriously get that if you're here for brunch I got the large portion of fish and chips, which were good, and the fries were fried to perfection. We came at a slower time but the service was not bad. It made me think I would love to host a birthday gathering or a baby shower or any connection with wonderful people really. We went for dinner and drinks and the drinks were off the charts. Marie saved my dinner! Came to Cork & Barrel with a group of people who placed a reservation for 6. We were immediately sat and greeted by our server, Marie. Marie gave great recommendations and was patient with us as it was the majority of our groups first time. Marie recommended the Garlic Pretzel (which I did not photograph because it was devoured upon arrival). It was described as a "carnival style" pretzel due to its size and THAT IT WAS. It was soft and perfect to share with a party of 6. Do not try to eat this whole thing with just 2 people. It was paired with three sauces- queso, garlic cream cheese, and a mustard sauce. Can't recommend this pretzel enough. I personally ordered the short rib (because Marie recommended it) but by the time we were all ready to order she sadly told me they ran out. So I'll say it's safe to say you should order the Short Rib when you come. I was then told to order the Veggie plate that it's normally over looked and to add a protein. Let me say... this was THE best recommendation! These vegetables were so flavorful, I can't stop thinking about them. They paired just right with the salmon. My partner ordered the Reuben sandwich and his only complaint was that it got soggy. It didn't seem to be served right after it was made and possibly sat. The sirloin, I was told, was nothing special and not a memorable dish. Seriously, go with the veggies. Drinks were moderate priced and fairly good. Go with the margarita - top notch. Great taste. If you want a drink but don't want the taste of the alcohol, go with the Ross and Rachel - it's PURPLE. Service was outstanding. Our only complaint was being shoved into a private room that almost felt too private. We didn't get to enjoy the environment that is so highly talked about. Needed food urgently for the kiddo and this place popped up when I typed in chicken nuggets. So came in without any prior idea of the establishment other than they have nuggets. The restaurant is really nice inside. We were seated by the fireplace and there was also live music. There were times when the waiter disappeared for extended times but service was good overall. Unfortunately, it turns out the regular menu is only available after 3pm on Sundays and it's the brunch menu until then which doesn't include nuggets or Mac & cheese so the kiddo was a bit upset. But they had pizza and fish and chips which turned out to be good substitutes. The food was pretty good and hit all the right spots. We tried to order dinner, to be told they were "sold out" at 6:15pm. Then we received our bill, without asking to close out our table, and the items were incorrect and the HH items were not discounted. Overall a beautiful venue. I have been here several times over the past couple of years. I must be a glutton for punishment because this place loves to provide horrible service and extremely mid-food. The menu changes fairly consistently and the prices are unreasonable for what you actually get. I constantly have to track down a waiter to get service. In fact, this past Sunday we were seated for 10+ minutes before finally leaving without being greeted. There were two other tables and plenty of staff; they were just talking and messing around at the bar. I told the hostess and she just smiled. She must be used to the complaints at this point. I personally tried their pork belly burnt ends and the mac and cheese and they are a must in your table! Also ordered their smash burger and it was everything I needed after a long day. They have a good selection of beer. I ordered their flight. Good beer but they were not labeled when I got them. Really enjoyed them but would've liked to know which was which. They do have them listed in their menu and I had to make a switch due to one not being available. This place is a great option in the area and highly recommend. I had the Norm Peterson, Dublin Red, a very tasty Irish red lager. I really enjoyed it but had my heart set on enjoying a few pints of Harp. It's been too long since I have even had a Harp. Delicious as always and you can't go wrong with it. The Tomato Soup was very tasty and a nice hint of basil. Definitely made from scratch and it's well prepared for your enjoyment. Wife had the Fried Irish Cheddar. The pieces are huge, like Long John Silver's fish. Nice breaded and fried to perfection. The jelly that comes with it is fantastic. My wife had the fish and chips.
