This place was so good we ate here twice in one day! It's on the corner and looks deceptively small, but once inside the place is large. Two separate dining rooms, one with the bar. It's Decorated nicely and has a well appointed bar. Good wine and beer list and specials at lunch and dinner. Try a beer flight. For lunch I had a mozzarella tomato panini and the soup of the day, carrot ginger. They were both perfect, the soup being outstanding! For dinner I had the BBQ braised pork shanks with greens and the jalapeño Mac and cheese. Oh my god it was good. It was a huge serving that could have been shared by two. It didn't help that we also ordered the onion rings and the truffle fries as an appetizer!! I was stuffed. Great service also is the reason this place deserves a five star rating. read more

Saturday night and I was rewarded yet again with a delightful companion for dinner, but the real star was the food! Emily, our server, started us off with a great smile and in depth knowledge of what was available on draft. She promptly brought me some water (designated driver) and Russ his choice of a VT cream ale. The atmosphere in the pub is perfect - humming with music, conversation and glasses clinking. But back to the food. I had a terrific Caesar salad AND Sugar Shack Mac 'n Cheese. The mac & cheese had VT cheddar, maple syrup and crispy bacon bits. Oh my goodness - I was in gastronomic heaven! So nice, we ate there twice... in our two night trip to Barre. My boyfriend and I were in town for a long weekend, and our B&B host suggested the Cornerstone as one of two recommended dining spots. After looking online at the extensive and impressive craft beer lineup, there was no question where we'd be headed. It's a popular place on a Friday night, as we learned on our 6 p.m. arrival. The 15 minute wait was well spent at the bar, where we enjoyed Founders KBS. Once we were seated, we enjoyed the lobster mac & cheese -- creamy, with ample lobster and a nice scallion garnish for variety. The serving was generous, but we also found room to split a tasty Dutch apple pie a la mode for dessert. All in all, a great meal! The following day, we arrived early and were seated promptly. My pub burger was perfectly cooked (and Cabot cheese -- yum!), and I enjoyed the ample serving of onion rings I got instead of fries. My boyfriend also liked his teriyaki marinated steak tips. Service was friendly, attentive and accurate during both visits, adding to our enjoyment of the Cornerstone experience. We're looking forward to returning on our next visit to Barre. read more

Barre is a community steeped in history. Like many downtowns, the onslaught of "big box" retailers and vanishing industrial jobs have posed challenges. That's why it is so nice, as a Barre native, to see establishments like Cornerstone opening. Every seat was full during our stay. The food was very good and boasts culinary touches unlike anything Barre has ever seen. With advanced notice, Chef Jesse LeClair gladly prepared me a vegan dish (bok choy and quinoa ravioli with tomato soy broth). I appreciated his creativity, as many other places would have given me pasta and a simple salad - traditional veg fallbacks. My appetizer was the roasted beet salad - darn tasty dressing! - minus the cheese. My mother had the pot roast flatbread and my wife ate French onion soup and beer can chicken. Both were delicious. Food presentation was modern by Barre standards. Portions were generous. Prices were also reasonable considering the quality of food. Ambience and decor are wonderful. The owners rehabbed a prominent property alongside City Hall Park and the Aldrich Public Library. My wife and I live and dine frequently in metro Boston; Cornerstone exudes just the right amount of big city sophistication while paying homage to Barre's blue collar heritage. Service was very attentive. We waited only a few minutes for our table, and the servers regularly checked back for drink refills (big pet peeve!). The co-owner and chef also made it a point to visit tables. Classy touch indeed. We enjoyed seeing several old friends, both who worked there or were dining in. We will definitely visit again when home. Cornerstone is a wonderful centerpiece for Barre's recently rebuilt downtown (think: Big Dig lite) and will undoubtedly attract those of us who crave a slightly upscale but unpretentious "go to" spot. Truly stellar burgers in a bright, airy, casual gastro-tavern venue. Lovely charred goodness with a juicy, well-packed patty, nice sharp cheddar, and a toasted brioche bun. The fries were quite good as well, hand cut with the skins on and perfectly-salted. Service was quick and friendly, and the prices were not out of line with any of the other taverns we've come across in our years roaming around Vermont. Big difference was that this place delivers a solidly good meal. I am so glad that we chose this place as we passed through Barre on our way to NH. The food we ordered was amazing. We started with the pot stickers and stayed with the pub menu. Our waitress was an absolute joy to have and really made the experience a truly memorable one. I wish I would've gotten her name but I had forgotten. Secondly, the food was some of the best I've had since coming to the east coast. October 8th on a motorcycle foliage tour our group of fourteen stopped at the Cornerstone for lunch. I called about an hour ahead to let them know we were coming. When we got there tables were pushed together, places set, water poured, and menus at the ready. We were seated immediately! The atmosphere was fantastic as the restaurant occupies an old bank building in the most prominent location in all of Barre with excellent detail in the renovations and decor. Mike, the bartender/manager, was welcoming and friendly with a great sense of humor. Our waitress, Erica, was awesome! She was cool and professional and right there when we needed her. With multiple orders (and refills) along with many questions and special request every meal and drink was delivered quickly without one mistake. We were all very impressed! Everyone's food was high quality and delicious! I would say the Cornerstone is the great destination pub/ restaurant in central Vermont! We are a 'seasoned' group and not easily pleased and we were unanimously very happy with this stop. Barre should be proud to have such a great business in the heart of their downtown. In short; it's amazingly good. I don't get up to Barre often, but now I'm thinking that every time I'm in Vermont I need to stop by this place. I got the barbecued pork shank with the mac and cheese, and when it was delivered by my server (name of Lou- very pleasant and on the ball, never pushy) he described it as 'Flintstonian." He was right, thing was HUUUGE. I'd been craving a slow cooked pork shank for days and days, and this place delivered. Perfectly cooked, falling off the bone with all that good, soft connective stuff. Absolutely awesome. My wife had the skirt steak, which was also tasty, but it was also not a pork shank so I paid it little attention. But the dessert, man. The dessert. a peanut butter pie served parfait style. That blew our minds. Absolutely delicious, thick layers of chocolate and peanut butter mousse and a cookie crust. Great stuff. I can't wait to go back and eat there again. So there is probably some unwritten rule about not reviewing a restaurant the first day it throws its doors open, or even during the first week. I would abide by that, but I don't know what they could do better than what we had tonight. The only "complaint" I could make is that we agreed to a 30 to 45 minute wait, which did end up being 45 minutes, even though there were 7 open tables. However, I chalk that up to the staff trying to properly pace the tables on the first night that they are open and serving food. In any case, let me start with the restaurant itself - a warm, inviting space with low lighting, large windows and spacious seating. The bar creates a great focal point, and a fireplace in the room that can double as a private room adds and additional warm glow. It incorporates the historical nature of the building and of the town, but not in a highhanded "glory days" or "hometown pride" way. Service was really well polished for a first night - I I can't think of a negative thing to say in that regard. As for the food - it is the only thing that could outshine this great comfortable space, and it succeeded. We began with some of the best chicken wings I've had in a while, and set the tone for the meal: delicious food that has its roots in traditional comfort food and is executed extremely well. The wings had perfectly crispy wings surrounding plump, meaty and juicy meat. There was just the right amount of slightly spicy sauce on the wings, which were served with a few sticks of celery and some blue cheese dressing. The dressing might have been the only let down of the meal - I wish it was a bit thicker with a few more chunks of blue cheese, but that is a really small quibble, and not a problem, just a personal preference. For main courses, we had fish & chips and the Cornerstone burger, a 8oz Kobe beef burger. The Kobe beef is only $2 more than the regular Angus burger, and at $12 for Kobe beef, we couldn't pass it up. The burger lived up to expectations - flavorful, juicy, and fully of pure meaty flavor. When paired with the brioche bun, some cheddar cheese, and aioli, it is essentially burger heaven. It also comes with pickles, which are thinly sliced and also served on the side, and while I'm not a big pickle fan, these were pretty good. The fish and chips were all that you wanted from a good plate of fried fish and french fries. Fresh fish that clearly tasted fresh enrobed by a very crispy batter, fried to a dark golden brown. Moist and tender inside, crispy and crunch outside. Neither my wife or I are fans of coleslaw, but this celeriac slaw was crispy and not sopping with dressing - we both enjoyed it. The tartar sauce is not your traditional mayo with relish floating in it - it is mustardy with plenty of dill, and once again, even though my wife isn't a tartar sauce fan, she enjoyed it, with the fish and with the chips. Speaking of the chips, kudos goes to the Cornerstone for doing fresh, hand-cut fries, cooked until dark mahogany. These are what fries should taste like. Can't wait to try them in the poutine! Since we were indulging, we went for dessert as well, splitting the peanut butter pie, served in a small mason jar. It was layers of peanut butter mousse, chocolate cookie crumbs and chocolate fudge, topped with chunks of chocolate and peanut butter. Again, nothing "fancy" but exceptional in execution. I only wish I had a glass of milk right there to wash it down. Mix all of the above with a fantastic beer list featuring craft brews from the region and nationally, and this is one of the most exciting restaurants I've been to in Vermont, and there are many places that should pay attention to how they are executing, as there are lessons to be had here. My wife and I had dinner at Cornerstone a few weeks ago for a long overdue date night. We got there around 5:00PM on saturday night and I'm glad we weren't any later because the place filled QUICKLY! Even with a packed house our experience was great. The service we received was so good it was almost like we were the only table there. For starters we each got a salad. They entrees at Cornerstone are reasonably priced, but don't come with a salad. They do offer smaller versions of their salads which is what we got. I got the ceasar and my wife the beet. Both were fresh and delicious. For my main course I got the braised pork shank with jalapeno mac and cheese, which was really good. The pork was fall apart tender and paired perfectly with the barbeque sauce. The mac and cheese had a nice jalapeno flavor, but only a hint of the heat. I even downed the collard greens which are not usually my favorite green. My wife chose the Angus burger for her main course and asked for it to be cooked through. When it arrived it was actually medium-rare which is fine for me, but my wife cant do. When we told the waitress about it she took one look, agreed, apologized and took the plate away. Within a few minutes we had a replacement plate with a perfectly cooked burger and new, hot fries. Mistakes can happen, but when they are taken care of with this level of service they really don't matter. I know a lot of restaurants that could use a lesson from CP&K in this area. Even with all the above, two desserts and a couple drinks our total bill was about $80.00. Considering the level of service we received and the amount of food and drink we purchased this is VERY reasonable. I really cannot understand why this place is currently listed as $$$$ here on Yelp. Its definitely $$$$ quality and service, but I would say its closer to $$ in price and you should definitely give it a try. read more

This used to be my favorite restaurant in the Barre/Berlin area, of which there are very few. However, the last few times I've visited, the staff has disappointed me with their actions. I understand that it's a stressful job, and I think that everyone is allowed to have a bad night, but it's such a bummer that it's happened every time that we've visited recently. On two different occasions it was a typically busy night at the restaurant and we walked up to the stand at the front where a man who appeared to be the manager (dressed in all black) was standing. Rather than greeting us, taking our number, asking us to wait a moment, or showing us to a table, he just completely ignored us when we addressed him, as if we weren't even there. I guess he was doing a terrible job of filling in for the hostess, because when she finally came back to the stand, we were actually acknowledged. Very strange behavior, and very awkward for a date... On another occasion, there were several of us in a group who wanted to sit at the bar and order food/drinks. One of my friends was visiting from Mexico, where he is a resident. When he attempted to order a drink, he was asked to show his ID, which was his Mexican ID Card and clearly states his birthdate, and is written in Spanish (duh...he's from Mexico...). The bartender refused to serve him because she "couldn't read" the ID. I didn't realize that this is a policy, and I don't see why it would be because it seems like blatant discrimination against someone from outside of the USA. Of course his ID is in Spanish - that's the language that is spoken in Mexico! And he has never had an issue with using this same ID to prove his age in any other establishment in the USA. Regardless, even if it were a law to only accept identification that's written in English, the disrespect that was shown to my friend was the worst part. When the bartender refused to serve him and he asked why, she mumbled "it's not in English..." while walking away. That's no way to treat another person. It left me wondering if he was being discriminated against because he is from outside the USA, or because he was clearly on a romantic date with another man. These incidents are why I will not be visiting Cornerstone again, which is a shame because the food is pretty good and there's a great beer selection. I cannot give a business my support if my experience as a patron is not one of decency. read more

For the price of the meal, you would think this would be a better place to eat, but sadly I have been here 3 times and have been deeply disappointed upon each visit. First of all, the set up leaves a lot to be desired. It is extremely loud and conversations are almost impossible and the seating puts you close enough to other tables where waitresses have to squeeze by every few minutes. While the staff is friendly, service is very slow and often times you have a different person tending to you because your server is nowhere to be found. It once took 25 minutes to get a refill only to be given the wrong drink... As for the food, I wouldn't call it fabulous. The prices are high enough where I certainly wouldn't call it worth it and I have yet to be impressed by any meal I was served. Many times my food has actually been served to me cold and had to be sent back to be reheated. The portions on anything other than burgers are very small and we were even once told we couldn't have bacon on a certain burger because their chef at the time "didn't do that at lunch time" Overall, I avoid this place as much as possible. This is my favorite restaurant in Barre. My boyfriend and I eat here once each week. The atmosphere is great. It's a comfortable setting for a date, or to bring family/friends. It would be nice if it wasn't as loud, but you can definitely still carry a conversation so the noise level is forgiven. I have ALWAYS had excellent service here and I cannot count the number of times I have been in. The food comes out quickly and there is a lot of waitstaff so you always feel attended to. Additionally, the servers are always friendly and helpful! At this point, I have tasted almost everything on the menu and it is all good! My favorites include the BBQ Braised Pork Shank, the Swordfish Tacos and their unbeatable Mac 'n Cheese. My boyfriend is a big fan of their beer selection and the fact that the waitstaff is highly knowledgeable when it comes to drink selection. You really can't go wrong with a visit to the Cornerstone. If you're visiting on Thur/Fri/Sat, do call ahead seating! It's a popular place and there might be a small wait, but even if there isn't a table available right away there is usually space at the bar! read more

This is a great upscale pub environment. Lots of craft beers from various venues in Vermont and throughout. Solid selection. Nicely thought out menu of comfort based pub food. The burgers are flavorful and reasonably priced. The poutine was decent...nice scratch gravy that wasn't too heavy. The swordfish tacos were decent..I'd like them to try the same with ahi tuna....I think it would be a hit. I've tried their salmon entre...it was well portioned and flavorful. A couple minor downsides...it can be loud on a weekend evening...and equally. I found them a bit understaffed....so my waiter was a bit overstretched on one occasion. Overall...very good value for the food...and an eclectic pub style menu. I'd recommend. 4 stars read more

My girlfriend and I went to Cornerstone on the night before Valentine's Day. There was a long wait for a table but we were happy to wait because the reviews for this place were so good (and only a few other places in the area were open at the time). When we got there the host was extremely friendly and welcoming. He told us it would be about a 45 minute wait, not ideal but tolerable. As we sat there and waited, we noticed as people with reservations came in the host seemed to know many of them by their first name and shaking hands/hugging without any prompting, which made it seem like a pretty friendly place. Finally when we got our table, they were a little slow to take our drink order but we figured they were busy so no big deal. The waitress was nice and did a good job explaining the menu and some of the specials. I got a turkey burger with avocado and cranberry apple chutney and my girlfriend got vegetarian pesto pasta. We both really enjoyed our food very much. I got a Valor Red Ale and she got Citizens Cider, both of which were really good. Overall we really liked Cornerstone Pub. As I said, we really liked the welcoming atmosphere and the food/drinks. Our only complaints were the service was a little slow but understood because of how busy the restaurant was. Another small drawback were the prices. I think it was a little expensive but definitely not too bad. read more

A friend and I went here the night after Christmas; after hearing good things, we were eager to check it out! There was a short wait for a table as the restaurant was very busy. We ordered drinks (nice beer selection & reasonable prices I thought) and just planned to share a few things from the menu. The poutine: AWESOME!! Crispy fries smothered in delicious gravy, cheese and short rib pieces, served in a small cast-iron pot on a cutting board. Portion size was generous & presentation was lovely! Peanut-butter pie: WOW.. So good!!! This was the waitress' recommendation and it didn't disappoint. Served in layers in a mason jar, it tasted even better than it looked. Very rich so I'm glad we shared! Service was great & very friendly throughout our visit. As someone who was born and raised in Barre, it is so nice to have a restaurant like this downtown with great food and a cozy, welcoming and sophisticated atmosphere. I know this is early days, but i have been to the owners' previous establishments and i was expecting to be impressed - and was, very much so. We went last Friday after they had 3 or 4 nights under their belts and got there early (4pm) to make sure we got a seat at the bar. Started out with a Dogfish IPA draft and split some wings with my friend. Great wings, not too spicy, very crispy and plenty of them. No carrots on the plate, but plenty of celery. For a meal my friend ordered the Poutine and i got the Cornerstone burger, medium rare. The poutine looked delicious and the burger was cooked exactly as i expected. Even the bun was delicious (brioche?). Tasted all buttery. We had another pint, talked to the nice pair of bartenders (Mike & Mike) and were on our way after enjoying ourselves for about 90 minutes. The place is obviously clean and brand new, but one thing i noticed was how i saw people from all different demographics: me and a few others in jeans and carhartt coats, others in collared shirts and families with kids playing with crayons. Everyone was smiling and seemed to be as happy as we were. We will be going back - often! read more

We used to enjoy going to the Cornerstone, but frequent changes in the kitchen have left it kinda spotty. The menu is okay, but not a home run, and certainly not up to the coin they're asking. The bar does carry a wide range of local beers, so that's nice. But the bartenders are flat-out rude. One time I was sitting there having a beer. There was one other party there. So two groups, two TVs. Our group was watching the NCAA track tournament (we have a kid who competes). The other group, way at the other end of the bar, was watching the Stanley Cup. Our bartender came over and changed our TV to hockey. What the heck?? we asked! No reply. We paid our bill and left. Won't be back. In any case, seems like a nice place until you figure out they're only being nice because they're billing you. read more

My favourite place to eat in the Monpelier/Barre area. Has amazing beers on tap and canned, like the famous Heady Topper. Also has some of my favourite poutine in the area, but the gravy is quite salty, so beware people who do not like salt! Their burgers are incredibly moist and juicy, and I love how you can choose to have sweet potato fries or onion rings for a side (it does cost more). It does get jam packed on Friday nights, which makes it super loud, and has longer waiting times, even though they close at 9pm. When they're busy, the service can also be delayed. read more

Ate there on a Thursday evening, party of four. The good: My brother's duck burger was excellent, my husband's fish and chips was very good (fries excellent) and massive portion, my sister's salad was delicious. My scallops were delectable. Scallops cooked perfectly, with a nice browning outside and buttery tender inside, on a bed of light citrusy risotto. Cooking scallops perfectly must not be easy, because it doesn't happen often. I'd go again just for that. The rest: Our waitress was a little brusque but competent. My first glass of water smelled faintly of bleach, and we did have to ask several times to get a replacement.
