We started off with the soup of the day which was turkey bacon. My husband got the seafood diavolo and I had the NY strip. Dessert was apple blueberry crumb pie. Everything we had was delicious. The drive from CT was so worth it, we'd take another drive just to back there! Our server, Chelsea, was attentive but also allowed us to enjoy our meals. If you're in Stowe, this place is a MUST! Usually we love The Whip but on this visit things were very off. Our server seemed a bit stressed and we overheard him expressing as much to another table which we felt was inappropriate. Our wings came without Bleu cheese and it took a while to get it brought out. We ordered the steak au poivre which the menu described as a strip steak with a mushroom cognac sauce. We received a filet mignon with some pepper on it and no sauce.which was also undercooked vs what we asked for. They did fix the filet but we never got the sauce and it wasn't supposed to be a filet to begin with. Overall, we were not impressed by the food options in this area but Whip was a delightful exception. The Millennial Chum and I came by for an early dinner this past Saturday, getting in some much needed nourishment ahead of a big hike. The Stowe gastro situation in hindsight is pretty odd; there are definitely a lot of restaurants, but most of them have very limited/niche menus that we just weren't in the mood for. Whip had a lot going for it right from the get-go - edgy historical vibes and a wider array of entree options, spanning multiple genres. We almost missed it; I saw a subtle sign in a parking lot for it and recommended we at least walk in to check the menu. It turns out they have a much more obvious entrance further down Main Street, but no matter. Since we went in the back way, we took a bit of a circuitous route to the entry, where we were warmly greeted by an older gentleman who took us into a back dining area past the bar. Loved the atmosphere; tons of ye olde wood all over the place, with a pretty heavy emphasis on the equestrian world - I'm pretty sure our booth had a saddle hung up on the wall next to it. The Millennial Chum also gamely took part in a photo session by the antique phone booth setup (TikTok jokes ensued). There were a few items on the official menu that grabbed my attention but I emotionally imprinted on the specials pretty quickly. I opted for an herb-crusted halibut entree that I'm pretty sure had a citrus tinge to it. Absolutely delicious and hit the spot. The portion of halibut was generous and came with scrumptious mashed potatoes. The Millennial Chum got a Vermont cheddar chicken dish, I believe, and was also quite smitten. Unlike me, she actually knows how to exhibit portion control so part of the chicken came back to our lodgings, where it created a scrumptious smell in our fridge for a day or two. The service was excellent as well. Our waiter had a touch of the quirk (by no means a negative - I always recognize members of my tribe) and was very "human," if that makes sense. Conversant, friendly and genuine. He was honest with respect to his assessment of the menu and its stronger items, and stopped by very regularly to check in on us. We were both drinking a lot of water and he was able to maintain the level in the glasses pretty well despite the constant guzzling. This might literally be the only unequivocal restaurant recommend I have in the area - this is a ski town in the offseason so your options aren't the best right now. But you could do a lot worse than Whip. read more

The mussels were so tender and the white wine butter sauce was excellent! And you get plenty of mussels! My wife and I also shared the artichoke dip which was meh. For entrees I had the pan roasted cod with parmesan risotto and asparagus which was so good! My wife had the pan seared pork rib eye which was so tender! We ate inside due to rain. I had the PEI mussels and we split the maple glazed pork steak with broccolini and a cornbread concoction. My mussels were terrific. Great broth - not a lot of garlic and not a lot of butter/oil but fabulously tasty. I had to hold myself back from drinking all of the broth after finishing the perfectly prepared mussels. My spouse had the corn soup and loved it. We split the pork steak and it was delicious. The juiciest piece of pork I have had in a long time - not a lot of fat - just moist and tasty with a light but flavorful glaze. My spouse had all the broccolini (I am not a fan) and the cornbread concoction was cornbread-y and unremarkable. But the pork - scrumptious. The downside was the pacing and serving attention. We waited near 20 minutes at the table before talking to any waitstaff. It took overly long to get the appetizers, and then longer to get the entree. And, the wait for someone to notice we were finished was longer than it should have been. Waitstaff was pleasant, but it seemed understaffed even on a not completely full Tuesday night. The good: Convenient, located at our hotel. Cool atmosphere. We made a reservation for 6:30. Seated as soon as we walked in. It was our anniversary weekend. Reservation notes asked for there to please be no singing, but they were sweet and had a card waiting at the table. The maple butter with the bread was delicious and the prime rib crust seasoning was flavorful. Waitress was nice enough and was apologetic. The not-so-good: We sat there for 29 minutes until we were greeted at our table. We watched 2 waitstaff take care of the few tables all around us. I only know how long it was, because at the 30-minute mark, I was going to go back to the hostess and check in. Our waitress came over and said "Are you being helped?" We said no. She responded with "I'm surprised by that." Not one to be rude, but also a bit annoyed, my husband simply said "We are surprised by that, too." She said she would "take good care of us and make up for it." I'm not sure what that looks like, because nothing was expedited or comped (which is fine, but usually what that implies) In fact, my husband was upcharged $5.00 to switch from green beans to the smallest side salad. We were aware of an up charge, but it was excessive for lettuce, and a few carrot shavings. The food was just okay. The prime rib did not come with horseradish, Gorgonzola , or any flavored butters. The baked potato was without butter or sour cream. It was all pretty bland. Cocktail was a pina colada, the rum overpowered. Our bill was $150. Before tip. I don't mind paying that for good food. This did not qualify. The women's bathroom smells VERY moldy/musty. Beware if you have asthma/allergies. It was not a great experience all around, especially for a special occasion. read more

My friend and I went to this place Friday after October 20th which is supposed to be slower since major attractions in the area have closed for the season. (IE- the Gondola, the scenic toll road, The Cliff House all closed for the season) I will say that this weekend was definitely MUCH slower that my previous trip to Stowe last year. However, this restaurant was still jumping. We got a table after about a 20-25 minute wait. We both ordered a steak and it was cooked perfectly and was also huge. My steak was pepper crusted. Steak is served with very lightly seasoned vegetables and mashed potatoes. My appetizer was the fried calamari with is drizzled with a garlic aioli. I felt like the aioli should have been more garlic flavored. It tasted like Mayo and it has no indication of any specs of seasoning within the sauce. It's basically better in the side. But it was fried well and was extremely light. I would definitely come back here. My meal was better than the Beirhall at Von Trapp by far. read more

We love coming here each visit we make to Stowe. We especially love eating in the back covered patio area. It's quiet and away from the road. The staff are always so friendly and food exceptional. The bread they give (if you ask) is AMAZING! You can't beat the location off the main street and parking can be found around back. I appreciate that you can book ahead and ask for the patio. The kids menu is also lovely...finally a place that offers something other than nuggets, pizza and pasta. My 5 year old really enjoyed his grilled chicken, mashed potato and sweet peas! I love the Vermont Cheddar Chicken! My husband cleaned Gorgonzola Crusted Filet plate...we didn't get to enjoy dessert this time around (the lil one was turning into a pumpkin) but we have in the past and it's also delicious! read more

I ordered the cheddar chicken and my partner ordered the salmon. The salmon was good and well crusted. The veggies were bad and definitely were not fresh. The rice was good. My meal... the mashed potatoes also seemed like they came out of a box which is upsetting as well as the frozen veggies again. The chicken had a decent amount of pink which we didn't notice until later. It tasted like nothing was seasoned. My partner and I had bites of each other's meals. Our party dined here without a reservation so we could not sit in the main dining area, but they were able to put a few tables together for us in the bar area, with the same menu. The food was quite good. I had a turkey dinner, which reminded me of a Thanksgiving dinner, but in the Summer. There was so much turkey that I couldn't even finish it. Price with a beer and tip was about $50. The other people in my party said they enjoyed their meals as well as the drinks. The atmosphere in the bar is much like a British pub, it has a cool rustic vibe to it.
