One of the best perks of living at Aloft is the service provided by front desk manager, Luis Flores. I understand there are maintenance issues that occur, however, my experience is that Luis is quick to respond and helps find a solution. Living in downtown is a luxury, especially in buildings with HOA dues over $1500 a month. The HOA fees at Aloft are extremely reasonable and the service provided by Luis and the entire building staff is first class.

Building's been given an updated outside facade but the units are decades old so be prepared for chronic breakdowns all around: If you are looking in this area, you already know about the depressing and crime-infested areas nearby, so here are some specific considerations and warnings: : 1) Chronic maintenance needed in units; can be a bit less only if the unit has been completely overhauled, appliances, electric, everything. I had every appliance break, plus plumbing problems (floods), electrical shorts--you name it! ( Building maintenance wants to come in and look for source of neighbors' leaks regularly). 2) Chronically broken loud elevators that recently started dropping unexpectedly with residents in them. There are only 2 so...better feel lucky and be in shape for stairs 3) No real security and very scary underground garage. Per, FOBS:, again, they are more facade than real security. Lobby desk staff very sporadic. a) Anyone who wants to can get in front door easily by pretending to have a delivery, etc., then have free access to all floors and units from lobby. b) Easy access to thieves, etc., from street into scary garage--no rules on residents waiting for door to close behind you, etc.--and doors are often broken and left open for weeks, so you are vulnerable to any strange cars or pedestrians who might wander in, including thieves and stalkers---not uncommon. And good luck with requests for security tape to view crime and suspects.Never available.from management. You are on your own. Mace and pepper spray highly recommended in addition to car alarms (and a companioin!). 4) Rents can be inflated compared to nearby comparisons so be sure to check out area carefully before signing. (Found out mine was). 5) Package delays are constant since deliveries go to front desk and can be very difficult to retrieve per inefficiencies and chronic lack of lobby personnel, meaning often no one is at desk and packages are held hostage until they go through a time-consuming mandatory check-in process. So if your Amazon package is due in 2 days, better plan on at least a week before you can pick it up. Often takes several tries and have had packages lost for weeks. 6) Noise: Near airport and highways so that is pretty constant. . plus tree trimming, leaf blowers, etc. common. Some insulation on doors and windows helps if you keep them closed, and some occasional strangers yelling on street and late noise from Balboa Park events, etc. Watch out for heavy steppers above your unit; my ceiling regularly shook and lights rattled from one above me. Bonus: My hall often smelled heavily of marijuana, not sure about others. Hope this helps!

My favorite is DeAngelo because he always has a great energy. The facilities are kept nice. There is a nice center courtyard that has areas for me to roam free. It isn't too crowded and gives the impression that you are outside of the city. Sort of akin to a peaceful meadow outside of Farmer Dells home. There is a business center with powerful air conditioning, computers, a copier, and even a book exchange! The gym has two areas one for cardio and one for weights. I never have to wait to use anything and as a fit bird I appreciate it. I LOVE the pool and hot tub. The view is great and I feel very fancy feathers when I chill out with friends and enjoy a few drinks. Great place to roost!!!

The location is unbeatable... located in Cortez Hill, right at the top... you're perfectly located between Balboa Park and the Gaslamp. This place is completely unprofessional and feels like a scam…read more Management will try to squeeze as much money out of you as possible, and it's very obvious that certain residents (friends or family of staff) get special treatment while everyone else gets ignored. The maintenance situation is just as bad. Workers park in resident spaces and have zero accountability--I personally had my car door hit multiple times by a maintenance worker who said nothing until he was caught in the act. That says a lot about the level of respect here. The building itself is in terrible condition. It's old, poorly maintained, and there is mold in what feels like nearly every apartment. Instead of properly fixing the issue, they just paint over it. Because of this, my family members were constantly getting sick, which is unacceptable and honestly concerning from a health standpoint. To make things worse, basic repairs are ignored. Our front door knob literally fell off, and management refused to fix it, saying it wasn't an emergency. How is a broken FRONT DOOR not urgent? Overall, this place is unsafe, poorly managed, and not worth your time or money. I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

They cut your lock and then take it. I had over $2,300 worth of tools stolen after I left for a holiday weekend. There's mold in the upstairs bathroom no matter how long I leave the window open. The lease policy states that cats must be indoors and dogs must be on a leash, yet the neighbors seem to think those rules don't apply to them. After complaining, all management does is send out emails -- even though it's a clear violation of the lease agreement. People don't pick up after their pets, which causes other animals to get sick. The rent increases are ridiculous for what you get -- no A/C, no dishwasher, and no in unit laundry. Sure, they remodeled the exterior and installed cameras watching the carports, but they refuse to provide footage when something is stolen. They make you file a police report before they'll even speak to the security company. They claim there's a security guard who patrols at night, but I've lived here for two years and have never seen them. Ants! Ants everywhere, no matter how much you clean. The community washers are constantly broken, and people from the other side of the complex come to use yours because they've figured out how to get free washes and drying. My biggest frustration is the constant car and storage break-ins -- especially when we live right down the road from the sheriff's department. I've had a car stolen, and street parking is horrid, particularly when the school is having a baseball game or the sports complex is hosting events since people seem to think it's okay to park in the apartment lot. On top of all that, there's a constant smell of dirty Tijuana sewage. The only positive thing is the proximity to town and the easy commute to the military bases.

The BBQs are nice, but the few times I've tried to use them, cockroaches have come out from the bottom where propane should be. Also, the HOA has made changes so that the doormen are no longer allowed to open the door for you, you are not allowed to leave your bike in your own apartment or in your parking spot (you have to pay for a pass), you aren't allowed to have lights on the balcony, you can't have a doormat at the front of your door, you can't have deliveries sent to you over 50 lbs, etc. etc. I was also recently made aware that when my roommate moved out some of her personal items, we were fined $150 because we didn't reserve an elevator. Instead of talking to her about reserving an elevator for future use, they watched her move her stuff then slapped on the fine. Furthermore, since living here I have had four separate incidents of severe water damage to my apartment due to faulty plumbing within the building. Yet the property refused to take on any liability, despite the fact that the damage did not originate from our unit ever. They were very unhelpful when trying to get the damage fixed. Overall, the property is making steps to improve aesthetically, the security guards are all friendly and as helpful as can be, but the changes made by the building owner/HOA have made it difficult to enjoy living here with all the new rules and regulations.
