A year ago we had Cortese Construction put up new front porch posts and rails. Vladimir and Alex did a fantastic job. Just recently we had Vladimir and Andy put in a new composite deck off the patio doors. Just gorgeous. The newest project by Vladamir and Andy was taking out a Jacuzzi tub. They put in floor tiles, drywalled, used subway tiles and a soaker tub was installed. Also had the sink faucets changed out to match the new tub. The bathroom was painted and now I have a fabulous up to date bathroom. Dave, my project manager was very professional and addressed all concerns about the deck and bathroom. Do yourself a favor. Avoid this company like the bubonic plague. I got an estimate for roofing and siding and they fed me this cartload of horse manure that they were backed up for one year. Not only that they wanted me to give them $50,000 toward the job one year in advance! ( supposedly for the materials.) Don't do business with them. Buyer beware. read more

Converted the spare room into a laundry room which is absolutely perfect and a life changer. Before signing any contract with Cortese Construction, read this review. In July 2021, with a new baby on the way, our family contacted Cortese to help free up our last remaining bedroom which was then used as my husband's home office. The plan was to partially finish our basement with a home office, full bath, and egress window. During an in-home consultation, Cortese and their architect took measurements, at which time Cortese provided an estimate of $70k, which we could afford. In Feb. 2022, Cortese presented us with a $93k contract for the same project we had discussed seven months earlier (a delay that Cortese said was due to architect). When we asked Cortese about the $23k price increase, Cortese told us it was because the previous $70k estimate was based on inaccurate measurements, even though Cortese took the measurements in July 2021 and the scope of our project remained unchanged. By this time, our new baby was born, and my husband and I were desperate for a dedicated bedroom, and so we signed the contract. The contract, which we signed on Feb. 2, 2022, expressly stated that construction would "commence approximately 120 days after signing," and that it would be "substantially completed 150 days thereafter" (see photos - note that both the "120" and "150" day numbers were handwritten on the contract by the owner of Cortese Construction). My husband and I interpreted this as meaning that Cortese would begin construction on approximately June 2, 2022, and substantially complete the work on July 2, 2022. However, no work had begun as of July 2022. When my family reached out to Cortese in July 2022 for an update, we were told that someone would contact us in Nov. 2022 to get our project scheduled and that we could expect work to begin as soon as Dec. 2022 or Jan. 2023. We were shocked by this delay, which Cortese attributed to their inability to find qualified labor to staff their projects following the COVID-19 pandemic. To make matters worse, when we expressed our dissatisfaction over the months-long delay, the owner of Cortese Construction insisted that he had told us to expect a fall 2022 construction start date when we signed our contract on Feb. 2, 2022. Besides the fact that neither my husband nor I recall Domenic Cortese mentioning any such schedule delays, he is the one who hand-wrote on the contract (before signing) that construction would begin in approximately "120" days, and be substantially complete in "150" days, from Feb. 2, 2022. It was this evidence of dishonesty, combined with the $23k price increase attributed to the owner's apparent mismeasurements, that caused my husband and me to question whether or not we could trust Cortese with our project. In late July 2022, my husband and I chose terminate our contract with Cortese Construction. Because the fine print on the back of Cortese's standard contracts reads, "the approximate commencement date and the completion date herein specified are not of the essence of the contract," there was no escaping this contract without penalty for unreasonable delay under New York State contract law. Consequently, we were forced to pay Cortese a $9,300 termination penalty. We also had to pay $6,100 for the materials Cortese had already purchased for our project, which we did not mind because the materials can still be installed by another contractor. Before we finalized the termination agreement, Cortese agreed that upon termination, they would deliver the materials they had purchased to our basement. However, when the delivery truck ultimately arrived, Cortese's employees refused to bring the materials to the basement and instead left them in our garage. When I called the owner of Cortese Const. for clarification, he said his attorney had advised they not deliver the materials to our basement. This rendered our garage unusable and caused us to pay a sitter to watch our two young children while my husband and I struggled to bring the materials to the basement. read more

I had my kitchen and bathroom, remodeled by cortese. Construction in the kitchen was so poor that I ended up doing most of the repairs myself. The bathroom sink fell striking a family as it wasn't anchored properly. Sink plumbing was not properly installed and leaked everywhere not only that the floors are uneven and the composer that we chose is now peeling off. I do not recommend this construction company to anyone. read more

Three years ago, I got estimates to have roofing material installed on a small, 10'x12' addition that started to leak. Nic, Domenic's son, came. He was on time. He asked why I didn't ask the contractor who built it to do the roof. When I explained that contractor assured me that what he did was "good enough", (not knowing he'd install a 3 pc interlocking style roof instead of using a thick, rubberized material until it was too late), I passed. That was my right. Nic told me he wasn't aware of "...any material of that kind", but went through the motions of acting interested. BUT, he told me he'd send an estimate in the mail in a couple of days. Then it became painfully OBVIOUS he didn't need my business. The estimate came, UNsigned, for $10k! (For 120 sq.feet? Really?) I'm a widow, so he threw a number, hoping it would stick, hoping I'm ignorant enough to accept??? BUSINESS OWNERS/ESTIMATORS: If you DON'T want the job, knock off the BS! I found a company who not only wanted my business, but only charged me $1,500 to remedy the problem using a product that by his admission, Nic Cortese knew nothing about. They also did my my one car garage. I've waited this long to post this, mainly to be sure the addition's roof product stood the test of time. Both roofs are as solid as can be to this day. Architectural shingles, 'fused' on the addition's product, and on the garage. Nothing cheap, but much less than half the cost of Nic's cowardly estimate. Be warned: Cortese is overrated as a contractor, and not upfront about their intentions...or lack thereof. Fortunately for me, some friends and a couple of neighbors, we got better: great product and workmanship for a lot less. Cortese lost potential business because of Nic's poor handling of my situation. NO excuse for a company that's been around for as long as they have. I've no doubt they're cashing in due to the pandemic, making up for lost time and the higher cost of materials. Two stars are for Nic showing up on time. Michele: First, you have me confused with someome else. Not only was what you responded with never discussed, but none of that was written down, let alone signed, on the estimate, which for 120sf is still exorbitantly high. The work you stated that was "needed", in comparison to what was done, and done well, is overkill. Wrong person, but nice try. Have an awesome week. read more

We were looking to install a retractable awning in our backyard and found that Cortese provides this service after an online search. Nick Cortese came to my house to take measurements and provided a quote promptly. We ordered it in November and it was delivered to the warehouse in March (delays due to COVID which Nick explained at the time of ordering). The awning was installed shortly thereafter. The field workers who installed it were OUTSTANDING and efficient! I suggested they put it as high as it could go because I was worried it would cut off my doorway and they did exactly what I wanted. It turned out beautifully and we are very pleased. The company also scheduled a final walk through with Nick to come look at the work in two weeks which shows they put customer service as a priority. I'm a very satisfied customer and can't wait until spring to begin really using our new BetterLiving sunroom with deck extension. It's exactly what I wanted. It was begun and completed in approximately 3 weeks during December. (Except for a custom shaped glass section that had to be special ordered - that took about 2 weeks to come in. The room was left completely protected from the elements in the meantime and the finish work only took about 2 hours in early January. Our salesman, Tyler Samer, was outstanding from start to finish. He came to our home and designed a room that would fit into the existing space without altering our existing roofline, furnace vent, and budget concerns. It was necessary to remove a small window in the laundry room and re-route the existing gutter downspout. That work was completed expertly by by our construction team of Jeff & Andrea. They removed also the old deck, constructed the new foundation, repaired water damage discovered to the back of our house, matched & integrated the existing siding on our house, patched & painted the drywall inside where the window was removed, and anything else that was needed. The result is an 11 x 15 sunroom room (4 large windows and one sliding patio door), vinyl skirting to match the 11 x 6 deck extension! Allysa was very responsive to our calls and kept us well informed along the way. She is so pleasant and patient- truly an asset to this company. We also appreciated the efficient and friendly communication from Marisa in handling the billing, including a few add-on items we requested or needed along the way. read more

We had water damage and carpenter ants in one of the exterior walls of our home, that required extensive remodeling inside and outdoors in the affected area. Cortese Construction did the work for us, and we were tremendously pleased. The job supervisor checked in daily and made sure we always knew what was going on. The three workmen who actually carried out the work were both very thorough and highly professional. We felt they did the very best work, and it was a pleasure to have them in our home while the work was carried out. read more

Had contracted after having tree fall into house. Needed windows, siding, a roof, and some gerenal fixing of holes where branches came through the walls. The lack of communication is unbelievable. Took 16 weeks to get construction going after signing and then they split the job up, installing Windows and siding first. I am paying for this now as the roofing crew they sent we less than professional and the condition of the siding now is deplorable. After having windows and siding completed in Aug they went silent on me in terms of getting the roof scheduled. No return of calls or emails until it fit their schedule. In Dec I was called after demanding my deposit for the roof back and put was told they could start the end week of Dec! I pushed back and they started work after Jan 1. They subcontracted a crew that was 50 miles away so they started at 10 and finished at 3. The crew while friendly was constantly complaining about roofing in the winter and the work showed this discontent. I had gardens ruined by sheer igonrance with the placement of ladders and the way the roof debris was strewn about. The siding was damaged in several places as well as the aluminum trim around the windows from fall roof debris. The Cortese people were nowhere to be found and still to this day haven't been them here for final review. The only time they contact me is when the want money. They don't care if I'm happy or satisfied with the work and that is the most disappointing aspect of all of this. The complete lack of respect for their clients should be a warning to anyone wanting work done. read more

I have had a lot of experience with contractors and have never had a worse experience. I think they are an over priced, arrogant, money hungry group of people . I feel their contracts are shady--make sure you turn it over-- there are additional conditions on the back of the contract--even though you sign the front. Also if you decide to work with them, make sure to get costs itemized because they change things to suit their needs, not the customers. They do not honor contractual timelines, but want payment before they walk out the door. Shop around--don't believe their false promises. read more
