My experience at Cortez coffee was like a personalized coffee experience. Ron (the owner) guided me into the warehouse room in the back and showed me the bins of the different kinds of coffee he has. I selected one and he took some beans back to the cafe in the front and made me a cup of coffee with those beans so I could try it out before I bought a bag. The coffee was perfect - well balanced and smooth. Ron said the he owns a coffee farm in Costa Rica (where he is from), but he sources his beans from around the world, depending on where the best beans are from at a particular time of year. Excellent family owned establishment. They sell both coffee and chocolate. They roast their own coffee, and make their own chocolate. At the front is the coffee bar where you can sample their coffees and chocolates. In the back, are the roasters, office, and areas where they make everything. They were kind enough to provide a tour. The Midge Coffee Spread was delicious (coffee + cocoa butter). You mix it into hot milk or hot water and it's lovely and smooth. Our Southwest flight was canceled so I quickly Yelped a nearby coffee place after a quick trip to Papago Park. This place is awesome! Ron, the owner, was very knowledgeable about all things coffee. It was a great way to end our Arizona trip and make the drive back to California. We ended up buying 2 cups of coffee, the garbanzo bean spread, the coffee spread, and two kinds of cacao nibs LOL. Patrick gave us a nice tour of the roasting facilities, followed by tasting of a few different coffees (as pourovers). The team here is passionate and incredibly talented - from roasting and brewing, to chocolate and even photo-magazines. What can I say about this lovely place. It's not just some coffee stop to get a coffee fix then go about your day. There is more to it than that. This is the hole-in-the-wall of all hole-in-the-walls! It's the coziest little coffee roastery that's literally just a shelf of things they sell and a couple seats by the counter. There's some donated books you can check out (and add to), plus some super cool art all over the walls. Costa Rican father and son team, Ron and Patrick, were so cool and gave me an oat milk latte on the house. It was one of the finest lattes I've ever had - initially sour and rich and then smooth and bitter. They get their beans from Cameron and even showed me a magazine of photos of their farm there. They do free coffee tastings and roastery tours on Saturdays 10-4, so I'm going to return and check it out. They told me not to tell people about Cortez Coffee (maybe jokingly!) because they want to stay a hidden hole-in-the-wall, but I just had to give them five stars because they made my day! read more

I have purchased multiple roasts from Cortez; however, recently i purchased the Roaster Blend and it was the worst blend I have ever tried. I opened the bag and noticed the beans smelled burned. After grinding, the smell intensified. Brewed a few cups for my friends and myself... we all dumped the burned tasting coffee after a few sips. I will continue to purchase Cortez coffee, except for the Roaster blend. Total waste of money. read more

What a great find! I just moved to the Valley and have been searching for a good cup of coffee. Cortez most definitely delivered just that. Pulling in you would never know a coffee shop was there if it were not for a flag that says "Coffee" on it, with some employees giving out free drip coffee. Not only did I get a free drip sample, Alex offered to let me sample some more. I had an espresso primo americano, the nepal drip, and a pour over of sumatra. I've been getting coffee from Ron Cortez for years. He is very knowledgable and loves teaching people about coffee. The location is kind of hidden in a strip-warehouse, but once you step inside you can tell it's the real deal. Usually there are a few different single origin and blends available. I prefer African coffees, but he also has a Sumatra that I like. They sell bags of coffee and refrigerated bottles of cold brew. Maybe the best beans in the valley. Small batch roasted with lots of options in addition to their normal offerings. I had some Ethiopian cheffe that floored me. You can pick up the beans at a lot of the weekly farmers markets. Beans are also available at then physical location in tempe. Be aware this location is mostly here for roasting and isn't a typical coffee shop. They aren't always serving coffee so if you want a latte you should call first and make sure someone is there to make it. If you do go to buy beans, which is why you should be there, expect to be impressed. They let you smell and taste whatever you want and really work to find you something you will enjoy. There is so much to say about Cortez I don't even know where to start! Definitely one of the best coffee shops/roasteries in the area. I've tried to many coffee shops that use Cortez beans, so it only made sense to try it from the origin! Cortez Coffee actually just had a street market this past Saturday. It was small this week - a food truck with killer tacos, a stand with a raffle, and amazing coffee inside. The owner, Ron Cortez, was there, and he is such a funny, genuine guy and you can just tell how much he cares about coffee. One of the baristas told us that they're trying to make the street fair a bigger and more regular event, so I'll definitely be back to see what else they have in store! I tried the nitro cold brew and I can honestly say it's the best I've had. Personally, I generally need coffee to be sweet to drink it, but this cold brew was different - it's naturally smooth and flavorful in a way that tastes amazing with or without anything added! I was lucky on timing and got to try a bit of their new chocolate sauce before it ran out, which was absolutely wonderful. Amanda, a super friendly barista working there, told us about how they've been experimenting with making chocolate sauce for drinks right here in Phoenix, so it's all-natural without any fillers. I don't post reviews a lot. This is probably only my 3rd and I only really like to post when service is extraordinary. I found Cortez at First Friday's about 6 months back and really found my love for coffee. I sampled it and really grew to enjoy black coffee. This morning I was craving that so I figured I'd head over for a cold brew. I know quite a bit about coffee, having a lot of barista experience, but of course I don't know everything. This guy, with blondish hair, gauges, piercings, I don't know how else to describe him, was working. The brew today was Nitro. I asked him what kind of roast was it. Like light, medium, or dark. He says, "Well it's infused with nitrogen." I thought, "Okay...so what does that mean?" He says, belittling me, "You don't know what that means? It's like a stout, alright?!" So moving on from that, I really just wanted to leave but I was curious about any classes they may teach. Like roasting, cold brewing, etc. He was like, "Well, what do you wanna learn..." It was brutally clear how annoyed he was with me. I was the only other person in there. And since of course I'm no expert on coffee, I said, "Anything I guess." Constantly after everything I said his attitude was condescending. I know it's hard to tell just given the dialogue. You'll just have to take my word for it. It was like I was such a burden when this company is one I can potentially invest more money in. Well damn, after this experience, despite the coffee being great, I think I'll continue to give my money to Dutch Bros. They know how to treat their customers with respect and praise. read more
