(Warning this is a long read)
On 10/18 my dad and I came into this location for a few items to kick off my B-day. I moved to LA a few years back for work, but I will always be a downhome southern girl with a love for my crimson tide.
I haven't seen my dad since the world closed due Covid-19. So every moment I have with him I cherish and remember, And this moment I definitely will always remember.
As we approached the checkout counter we came across one the most rudest blatant indirect forms of racism I have experienced in a long time. I cried on our way home because I thought people were getting better.
My family adopted me as a baby and they are white and I'm black but that has never stopped
me from being daddy's girl. In life I have experienced benighted closed minded individuals like Ryan (the cashier).
As we lined up our items we were greeted with quote: (The only thing I'm going to touch and scan is the beer purchase)(Ryan) during the whole transaction, I guess Mr. Ryan had a problem with my dad and his black daughter giving his company money so that he can provide for his family. There was no hello, or eye contact the entire time during our interaction with him. And the look of disgust as if there were bad trout (fish) around from (Mr.Ryan), angered daddy so bad that he wanted to cancel his membership which he has had for years.
My dad LOVES this store. We were able to purchase our items and I wanted to give (Mr. Ryan) something he didn't give us, good deep southern hospitality so as we departed the counter I Left Mr. Ryan with a blessed evening and may god bless your soul.
Everything described above would have been better understood if Mr. Ryan was just bad at his job, but that's definitely not the case per his actions with the white couple that was ahead of us. They were greeted with a hello, conversation and service with a smile. It was a 360 turn once it was our turn. It was very much clear and very much rude, and with my experiences of being a leader with one of the largest top airliner's in the country based here in Georgia. I don't understand why does he have a chance to interact with the general public, if there's a underlying issue that he needs to deal with.
I'm more disappointed than anything because a company large as Costco should understand that some people are just not made to work with customers and maybe they should be in the back of house.
I'll end this by saying neither my dad or family WILL NEVER COME TO LOCATION AGAIN, and I hope that Costco understands that family's come in all shapes, forms, sizes and colors. I hope Mr.Ryan is able to address that underlying issue and resolve it. GOD BLESS HIS HEART. read more
