The opticians were very friendly but hurried. It's Costco, not a boutique! You have to expect it! The prices were great! The environment is crowded. They assist you from behind the counter and I can imagining that being challenging and if you're getting multi-focals, potentially inaccurate. I know this being a former optician myself. Dependent upon your frame size needs, the options are very limited. I was able to find something for my wife. Didn't have to be "perfect," but doable, cause these were going to be back ups and I need to use my HSA. I started pre-shopping for myself, and could not find anything my size, and everything available is on display. I know the inventory always changes. Maybe it was just the timing. I'm in no rush. Wow! I had a fantastic and hassle-free experience with Costco Optical. I don't have significant problems, but I visit the eye doctor once a year for an examination and new glasses. My first time trying Costco, and Dr. Kwon is excellent, and scheduling the appointment online was very simple; I was seen immediately. They accept VSP insurance among others--visit their website or give them a call for more information. After the exam, I brought the prescription to the Costco Optical located just outside the office, where the friendly staff assisted me in choosing and buying multiple pairs. Both were designer brands and came to about $300. You can't beat the prices at Costco. I highly recommend Dr. Kwon and the Hayward Optical office read more

I had a really great appointment with Dr. Paul Kwon, he was very informative and efficient. He was also very personable and helped me with my vision concerns. The appointment ran very smoothly and nothing was a headache. He was straightforward and didn't try to sell me anything either. I really appreciated his genuineness during my appointment. Will definitely return again! The ladies up front were nice too! There was one girl who seemed like she was training but always made sure to ask for help/asked if "this" was okay and it made me feel comfortable knowing she would ask for help rather than just assuming she's doing it right. read more

Usually love Costco but these workers have a hit-or-miss customer service. I was welcomed nicely by a young guy on Tuesday and he was very patient helping me and my mom order my contact lenses (high prescription). 1 star for him. It doesn't really take long for my lenses to come in, so I called on Saturday asking if my lenses were ready. Instead of checking, the worker just asked me when I ordered them. I replied saying that I ordered it on Tuesday, and she simply said "Oh then yeah I don't think it has come in yet then." I then replied with a thank you, and before I could finish my sentence she hung up on me. I asked her if she was able to see what day it would possibly come in, but she hung up. This was a call I made Saturday morning. I didn't want to call again because she was the most unhelpful employee I have spoken to. Today I called in the morning asking if it was ready. I was put on hold immediately when it rang, to an automated service with ads. After four minutes of waiting, I recalled and I immediately had someone answer. Really? They told me my contacts were ready so I went to pick it up. I wonder if they were ready the day before but the worker just didn't check. I got there and waited at the prepaid contact lens part. I was told that I do not need a number the last time I went to pick it up, so I stood at the counter. I watched as every worker ignored me as they helped customers whose requests would take much longer than mine. All they had to do was stop for 30 seconds and hand me my box of lenses and I could be on my way. Instead, I waited 10-15 minutes for someone to assist me. I stood there making eye contact with workers who avoided me and went into the next person in line before handing me my box. Someone FINALLY helped me after 10-15 minutes and didn't even apologize for the wait. The time it took for my whole transaction with this woman was 30-45 seconds. She asked my name, I told her. She got my box and gave it to me. It was that simple and yet everyone seemed too busy to stop for the person who was standing there the whole time with a 30 second request. Ridiculous. read more

I've had occasion to go to the Optical Dept at the Novato Costco a few times lately, and several times over the last few years. Every time I have dealt with a knowledgeable and courteous optician, and gotten great service. They absolutely know what they're doing. And, all of them have been friendly and offered to go the extra mile for me, suggesting ways to make the glasses work better, in ways I'd never known about. (As, changing the things that rest on your nose, to make them sit in a better spot.) Given the prices of the frames, and the very good work of the opticians, I don't know why anybody goes anywhere else. read more

They passed my number, not updating the number box; no hi hello, got my id withiut a word, gave me my glasses, didnt even ask me if my glasses fit; just focused on chitchatting with co staff ‍not even a word of thanks at the end. Worst place ever! They didn't even give me an eye exam! They wanted me to pay for $115 for a medical exam for my eyes because I said I see floaters. I didn't want to sign that form for the medical exam on my eyes but the doctor won't go forward with my regular exam until she does the exam for the floaters. Shouldn't it be the opposite!??! Do the regular exam that I made an appointment for and if they have concerns with my floaters then they can ask for a further examination. If this was the process then they should have brought it up when I was making an appointment, instead of wasting my time to come to the appointment and then get denied to be seen because I refused to do a medical exam for my eyes. I made an appointment for my glasses and contacts which is a regular eye exam, I didn't make an appointment for a freaking medical exam for my eyes! Other places they would do the regular exam then asked if I want to do the medical exam for my eyes which include a dilation that does cost in addition to the regular exam. They need to get their stuff together. This is really unprofessional and if anyone is planning to go to costco for their eye exam they better clarify it first before making the appointment and going to it then get denied to be seen. If I can give zero start, I would!. So freaking ridiculous! This must be something new and if that's the case then they should have mentioned it when I made the appointment in the first place. The clerk was not sympathetic at all, she basically had that sorry but not sorry tone. read more

I had two occasions for interaction with the glasses fitting staff and the eye exam doctors for both my kids. One was a walk in and one was an appointment for eye exam, both with disastrous wait times of more than an hour. The lady doctor (Quan Pham) was rude and unapologetic in telling me after an hour of waiting that she will not be able to see my kid. Horrible experience for eye exams, absolutely avoid if possible. Glasses Fitting staff is absolutely a delight to work with on the other hand. Sondae assisted us and helped us with all fittings very patiently. read more

This is one big perk of being a Costco member. My uncle broke his glasses and to replace them via kaiser his provider it was going to cost me $300 for new glasses frame and lenses. This was outrageous. Keeping in mind they applied all the coupon and discount. I told him let's check out Costco. We went with our prescription and he tried on a few frames and got his glasses with all the perks kaiser was selling is for have the price. I told him well for kaiser price you can get two pairs of glasses. They gave us a two week wait time and they arrived 5 days later. What more can one ask for. A happy senior citizen and cost efficient. I don't think I'll be shopping glasses and frames else where read more

Perhaps pick up the call and mention they are with a customer and will assist me when they are done? How about taking name and phone number and calling me when they are available????? I'm going to stay on hold and see if they will allow this to go past noon. If so, management should check cameras and see if this issue was merely due to poor training and complete disregard for answering customer phone calls. Not ending this review until noon. read more

I have dry eyes and 2 different perscriptions for each eye. I have to order my contacts online because Costco doesn't have the particular contacts I use available there. First the contacts need to be approved by the doctor before Costco sends them to your home which has been taking about a week and then another week to be received. I needed emergency contacts at one point because I had no more. I called the office and they made it clear that this would be the last time they give me free contacts. I understand people may try to take advantage but honestly I just need a few pairs to hold me over and I would have paid. I placed another order online like I usually do and it was denied because it apparently was the wrong prescription. I was confused because I've been ordering the same contacts since November and it's now February. I called and was told that I ordered multifocal. Obviously I didn't realize that, but shouldn't this have been caught back in November? I was upset because I now I have no contacts. The receptionist said she would give me a few pairs for the inconvenience. I went to Costco and the lady at the front desk said she needed to ask the doctor because I already got free contacts before. First of all I didn't ask the second time they offered. But I waited and was kind per usual. The doctor came out and pretty much scolded me and said this will be the last time. Excuse me? You are the ones that approved the wrong prescription and now I'm getting scolded. They should have happily offered me some free contacts. I placed a new order for contacts on 2/15/23 and they will not be arriving until 2/27/23. Ridiculous. I'm going back to kaiser I'll gladly pay more for better service. read more

Arrogant lady in the front office. Taking appointments with them is a joke. They don't honor any appointments. You will be made to wait. They will entertain walk-ins over the appointments. We've all gotten used to Costco being a the best price in town unfortunately they are not with the optical department because they only do the "premium" lenses which was an extra $120 when my insurance covers basic lenses. The lady told me they don't do basic which is annoying after spending an hour picking a pair out and asking about my benefits and coverage. Not once do they tell you they only do premium lenses, not until I decided on the frame was I presented with the bill which should never been close to zero after insurance. The lady said they only do premium because the basic ones will warp over time and just fall out, I've never had that happen to me with any other pair, and I am quite sure they were not premium. Well I got my "premium" pair elsewhere with zero out of pocket and way better service which by the way none of the ladies working there really wanted to be there because they all seem to good to care, must be a union thing. read more

Costco is my new Kaiser! I came here for the first time since my insurance plan with Kaiser no longer covers vision benefits and I had a pleasant visit! Set an appointment because they get booked quickly so they don't take walk-ins (usually? unsure). For your first visit, they'll have you fill out basic forms for contacts and/or glasses and you're taken right away to begin your eye exam. I paid only $99 for contacts AND eyeglasses exam. (if you have stigmatism, however, it is more expensive.) The service was great, it's the same or better than Kaiser in my experience. The lady at the reception desk and the doctor were very nice and helpful. My eye exam was quick. The optometrist asks you to read letters of different sizes on the screen, in a book, he looks into your eyes with a light and finds the lens that suits you. He gave me trial lenses to try on for a week and set me up for a follow-up appointment for a check up on how the lenses are suiting me. There are a variety of cheap frames that costco provides, most are less than $100. I didn't find any that I particularly liked but the prices are hard to beat! Their contacts are much less than the price of what Kaiser offers (same brand, same number of lenses). Will be back to look for some new lenses they have on display! read more

Arrived for my appointment on time just to find a line of people waiting to be served. When it was my turn to be helped the rude employee said I will not be seen today because I arrived late! When I said I was not late the rude employee said she was just following orders and you will not be seen today. I took time off work to get to the appointment and was pretty surprised to be treated like that. read more

I have had a strange experience using Costco for glasses. They don't make appointments; instead, you show up and take a number. Mondays seem to be the busiest day, so be prepared to wait. Their prices on frames are good, but the quality of treatments (polycarb, transitions, etc) on the glass is low, and the fitting seems to be hit or miss. I've had them redo my glasses a couple of times due to poor prescription (dr's fault, not Costco) and then again for poor placement in the lens of the bifocals (Costco's fault). They are nice enough, but this is a service, and their business model is not service-oriented, so it's pretty no-frills. I don't think I'll go back for future prescriptions. read more

Time to get new glasses and back to Costco I went. They are having a buy one get the next frame $40 off sale. I picked out a FABULOUS pair of Tory Burch frames that I am going to use for sunglasses. I could not decide between 2 styles of regular glasses and so bought them both. At $40 off each of those 2 frames, my price was ridiculous. I have a very high prescription and my lenses cost a fortune at the other places. The gentleman that helped me was fabulous and took expert care over my 3 glass order. I am looking forward to my new glasses in about 10 days and especially the Tory Burch frames ! Seriously, Costco Optical is the bomb. I think they got my prescription mixed up with someone else . I'm farsighted & both pairs of glasses were for nearsighted . At first they tried to convince me that I had to get use to them making up excuses . Also , my prescription was supposed to be ready on Monday & they were supposed to call me but by Friday there was still no phone call , so I went to the eye center and they had the eyeglasses but my phone number was off by one digit . Don't waste your time . I recommend that you go to a private optical establishment . I think they turn out as many customers as quick as they & my experience was below second rate . read more

I normally shop at the Livermore Costco but decided to visit the Hayward store because I was visiting my mom in the area. I have been holding off get a new pair of eye glasses because the last two pairs that I ordered, I ended up returning because they just didn't fit/feel right. I decided to give Costco a last try but at a different location. I was very impressed with the customer service I received at this Hayward Costco Optical. First, my mom ordered 2 pairs of glasses from another store, but they were never fitted correctly. My mom brought them into this Hayward Costco and even though the lady in the Optical dept knew that the glasses weren't purchased from Costco, she fixed them for my mom anyway. Then it was my turn to pick out my glasses but remember this was going to be my third attempt... The same lady was extremely helpful and patient in helping me choose a pair that fitted comfortably. She also explained to me that the possible reasons that the previous two pairs didn't fit right; and provided extremely useful patient education. Even though I haven't received my new pair of glasses yet, I'm just so blown away by the customer service I received at this Costco store. Before leaving the counter, I asked for the lady's business card and found out that she is the Optical Manager, Alicia Medrano, even more impressed! Can't wait to get my new glasses! read more

I got my eyes checked for a prescription by their independent optometrist, who was so great! His name was Gary, and he really took the time to explain what was going on with my eyes and why, and even gave me time to feed my baby, since I had to take him with me, and he was crying his eyes out. He was late for my appointment by a lot, but apologized profusely when he finally got to me. In terms of actually buying the glasses, there were not a whole lot of attractive options. It was one of those displays that has a lot of choices but most of them look pretty much the same. So I guess that made it easier since I ended up with only 2-4 frames to choose between? Once ordered, the system was very prompt, and the glasses were made and ready in 7 business days. I got both regular glasses and prescription sunglasses, and the lady who helped me fit them after they were ready was very nice. Overall, I would use them again for future glasses purchases. The wait time is INSANE though. This department is so understaffed, and I had to wait so so long for everything. We are talking about 30 min waits just to talk to anyone in the department, so best to take a number, then do some shopping and just stay kind of close (within hearing range). Do not go if you only have 5 min, because you will not get your question asked or problem solved. read more

I came here a few weeks ago to get my eyes checked for contact lens. My insurance doesn't cover vision so I was looking for a cheaper alternative and found Costco optical. I initially called the San Leandro location to make an appointment and did not realized I had been transferred to the Hayward location automatically because the San Leandro one was under construction. I honestly had no idea my appointment was in Hayward until I received a reminder call the day before. I kept it anyways as I was down to my last pair and had been wearing that pair for over a month :x oops... I was 10 mins late to my appointment but luckily was still taken in. The entire process took 45 minutes, from checking in to paying and scheduling for a dilation a few days after on a Saturday. Both processes with different optometrists were quick but felt thorough enough. I felt like the optometrist spent a bit extra with my exam to make sure I got the correct prescription and nothing stronger than needed. I had gone to a boutique optometrist a few years ago and was given a prescription on glasses that has been and still is too strong, where wearing it more longer than an hour gives me a headache. Prescription was $94 and dilation was $25 (optional). I took the prescription and purchased my contacts online. I highly recommend going to Costco for the price and speed. Regular optometrists usually take on average 1-2 hours. read more

Ok people at Costco Hayward optometry, I spend a lot of money there and deserve to be treated with a little more respect and not just me but anyone who spends their hard working money there. I went there just to pickup my contacts a no more the 2 minute visit. I asked the associate can I just pick up contacts it was quite busy with customers wanting to pick out glasses which is a long process, I know because I worked for an optometrist , we never made people wait for contact pickup , this women was so rude told me I had to wait for my # to come up and was actually very rude to others as well, I know it's hard working with the public but treat people the way you would want to be treated it's that simple or get a job working with animals. Costco start caring more about how your customers are treated. I have to mention there was an Hispanic young lady who addressed me with kindness and a beautiful smile thank you for that. read more

Been here a few times for the kids and wife, and alas I too am in need of their services. Myself and family have dual coverage insurance through both my work and Wifey's job, so out of pocket costs are minimal. Trying to think outside the box and be semi hip I've opted to ditch my old fashioned frames and go with a trendier pick through Oakley. The gal who helped us was very efficient and really knew how to glide through our coverage plans when looking up our member benefits. Not too bad of a deal and came out of pocket $60 bucks total for the basics and transition frames. Have to wait 10 days for pickup but a lot cheaper than going to the mall stores. read more

Was fortunate enough to have Two VSP memberships and the first attempt to get receive new glasses with an updated prescription with my primary optometrist was not successful. For some reason, they could not get my prescription correct. So I went to Costco a month later, where I had a twenty minute appointment with Dr. Hom after confirming my prescription, she was able to see find the issue with the "sight height" and recommended altering the prescription that I had previously received from the earlier month. Within three days, I had new glasses with a perfect prescription. Dr. Hom is the best! read more

The eye glasses in our optometry office getting too expensive so I went to Costco. Price is very reasonable which is no surprise. But I have this great service by a young lady Vanita, courteous, knowledgeable, efficient and more than helpful. She even call VSP vision insurance to take care my coverage (I casually mentioned that I have never deal with VSP directly before). These people can't even return a phone call. I made 4 attempts to make an appointment. First try, a girl answered and put me on hold for 7 minutes until my call was just dropped. Second try, I left a voice message. Third and forth try to no avail. And my message got no response. I feel as though this may be prologue to their service and professionalism as optometrist. They get one star today...lets see if future visits raise this score. I ordered new glasses last week and went in to pick them up today. When the optician opened the case I was shocked...they were not the frame I had ordered. They were not even the brand I ordered (even though they were in a case for that brand). They were not my prescription either. Obviously the lab put them in the wrong case and attached my paperwork to them. It's clear that a QC check is not done when glasses come in from the lab. I spent most of my lunch hour waiting to be helped and made it clear that when they get this issue straightened out I expect to not have to wait to be helped. After all of my visits to pick out my glasses, order them, pick them up and get them adjusted, I think I worked with everyone that works in that department at one time or another and everyone was very helpful! Rosie did an excellent job and helped me find the frames I chose. I was there for a good hour looking at frames and trying to find something and she was able to pick some out for me in about 5 minutes. I started out at the optometry department at the Fremont Costco. They were very pleasant and recommended a specific frame sizing for my face shape. Unfortunately, they didn't carry Oakleys in prescription frames so I came to this Costco in Hayward. While they had a limited supply of Oakleys, the service was not up to par. They were closing and basically rushed me through the sale to get me out of the store. In addition, there was no mention of sizing and they basically sold whatever they had to you whether it fit or not. A week later, when my glasses were ready, I stood in an hour long line for a total of six people in front of me. Come to find out, my order was completely wrong. The glasses also fit very loose on my face despite several adjustments. They basically ordered me overpriced, non-fitting prescription sunglasses and they bent the edge of the frames to loop around my ears turning the frames from tactical to cheap looking. Although completely their mistake, I was asked to pay another $30 dollars to order the correct lenses and to wait another week. The staff here appears overworked and that frustration subsequently is handed down to their customers in the form of carelessness. I won't be coming here and will stick to my Fremont Costco where the service, professionalism, and worker knowledge seems to be better. read more
