This isn't a review of the spa, but a review of Stephanie Cross, the Pilates instructor who now provides private instruction at Cote D'Azur on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. I've been working with Stephanie in various locations since summer 2005, and have been amazed by the results she and I have achieved together. She has an extraordinary commitment to Pilates as a discipline, and her knowledge of the body is superb. Stephanie gets to know each of her clients well, and tailors a program to push you hard without ever once risking injury. Best Pilates instructor in town, and my abs (and the rest of me) are the better and happier for her great inspiration and teaching. read more

This is a hidden treasure in Pasadena. The place isn't visible from outside but once you walk in you have a feeling of peace. It has a very homey feeling to it which makes you relaxed as soon as you walk in. My boyfriend and I went here for a couple's massage. The owner gave him a deep tissue massage that he absolutely loved. He said she knew exactly what areas needed more attention. I had a swedish massage which was very relaxing. The room was very zen like and the music playing was very calming. After our massage we chatted with the owner for a while, she was a friendly and down to earth woman. I love this place. It is way beyond a typical spa experience. It feels like family, it feels like home. The space is beautiful and they have so much to offer. You can do yoga, then get a delightful massage or some amazing energy work. The masseuses seem to sense what you need the moment they see you. I was completely overwhelmed with my experience on Saturday. The owners are more than engaging as is their staff. In addition, I was very impressed with the knowledge of my technician and I fell asleep during my facial. I would NEVER have known about this well-kept secret had it not been for Groupon. Update: I had a few more massage here which weren't as stellar, but the atmosphere and friendliness are still wonderful. After being around town and finding so many places that offer quality massage for about 1/2 of the price, I haven't been back for a while. As far as high-end spas they are lovely, and if you have the extra cash, the atmosphere, professionalism and unbroken English are above par. I've been here 4 or 5 times and had wonderful massages from 3 different therapist. Each has their own unique style, but all have have great. They really work out the problems in your muscles, so not only is it enjoyable, its good for you! (Unlike many massages I've gotten other places that feel good but don't have any real effect). Some have even given me suggests on stretches, etc. to help improve the problems with my back. Prices are pretty standard, but they often have 1/2 off massages on Goldstar. They often water and tea before and after the massage, and allow you to sit and relax on the deck without rushing you at all. Very peaceful atmosphere. read more

I used my Groupon yesterday for the Majestic Spa package - worth every penny and more!!! Senica was my therapist and she was WONDERFUL! Thoughtful, responsive to my particular needs, and really skilled. The hot stones were amazing, she did really deep tissue work on my neck (which is chronically stiff and sore from a car accident some years back), and she spent more than the allotted time with me. As I was driving home I realized that I had no pain when I turned my neck to the left - amazing!!! I have no illusions that it takes steady treatments to realize long-term gains, but still - this massage was excellent and provided outstanding results! I'll definitely go back for more!! read more

Do not panic if you loved the place with the same name in Old Town Pasadena - it's the same people and everything, just in a MUCH cooler, mellower environment. (Look for the bamboo all around the house.) If I could afford this, I would go weekly. Darrin is the co-owner and a master. I am not New Agey- and I think he might be, but he totally covers it up for me and is just friendly and chatty. It's not weird being massaged by a guy (and usually it is for me) and I think he just adapts to the person he's massaging. He will follow your guidance too - if you want just a soothing "go to sleep" massage, I'm sure he'll do that, but I need tension released and we all know that sometimes that hurts. He'll make sure your body is warmed up and ready for any pain, though. When it's all released, it feels amazing. Can't say enough good things - truly. And I am just a regular customer, not an insider or a friend. LOVE THIS PLACE! A side note: last year, I had a facial, and I thought it was cool... the photos of me from that evening are the best I've ever had - seriously, I looked glowing and about 20 years younger - and no, there was no botox involved! read more

Cote D' Azur is the real deal. It's for people who know, understand and appreciate a quality massage and healing body work. This is the place I go to get recharged. The staff are knowledgeable and want you to have a positive experience. I've never had a bad massage here and I've been a customer for many, many years. No it's not Burke Williams so if you're all about the champagne, milk baths and fluffy robes, this is not the place for you. Their current location is in a beautiful, funky, peaceful, little 2 story house on a side street between Old Town Pasadena and Huntington Hospital. Everyone is very friendly. There is space both indoors and outdoors to hang out either before or after your massage, have a cup of tea or cool cucumber water and reflect on the massage experience. I purchased a voucher from TravelZoo for a Restorative massage which expired within the week. So I called to set up an appointment and experienced the WORST customer service EVER! The girl who answered the phone seemed frustrated with her life, and decided to take it out on me. She was completely RUDE and her tone was simply condescending and disgusting. I called expecting that they might not have an appointment available for me, mentally prepared I had a simple question about redeeming the voucher for it's face value at a later time, as the terms and conditions state, and she went on a rant about how she didn't understand why people waited to the last minute to redeem their vouchers and began to express her frustrations with me and other customers who had called before I. I explained that my waiting to redeem the voucher was no PERSONAL ATTACK on her, and she continued on to say that I was frustrating her and then she hung up on me. Frustrating Her? WOW! Clearly her Life seemed to be Frustrating her! I called back to ask for her name and she refused to give it to me, continuing to use a condescending tone. If this is who they have representing their spa...Then... NO THANKS! I don't want to step foot in that place. I frequent many spas in the city, and this was by far the absolute bottom of the barrel experience. Try Le Petite Retreat on Larchmont ....You won't have an experience like this AT ALL. After exchanging some messages with Carolyn, I decided to give Cote D'Azur another shot. I had pulled a muscle in my back and a groupon deal came up, so I said, why the hell not? I'm really glad I did...I think that massage goes up with one of the best massages I've EVER had. Senica was just thorough and skilled. And at the end of it, I went -- can I afford this at normal prices more often? Unfortunately, I can't but the fact that I was even considering it deserves another star. I think they're pretty overpriced but at least I think their service seems more like its worth it. I truly enjoyed my experience at Côte d'Azur. The spa is located inside a home that was built in the 1890's and it has retained that quaint charm. My future daughter in law and I received the majestic massage 75 minute treatment that includes hot and cold stones. Carolyn and Toni were our therapists. I've gotten many massages through the years and I can say that Toni's was one of the most skilled. She was in tune with my problem areas without me even pointing them out and she provided relief from pain I had been experiencing. We were served a lovely blend of tea afterwards and enjoyed sitting around their waiting area (which feels more like a cozy living room) when we were finished. I highly recommend them. read more

OMG....this place is like heaven. I came here for a friend's bridal spa day with a group of 4, and had purchased one of their deals. I had a massage with hot stones followed by the sound bath. I enjoyed every minute of my time at Cote d'Azur- the staff was so warm and welcoming, and they gave excellent massages. My girlfriend and I went here for V-day weekend. We had the couples massage. It was great! Darrin took good care of us. Loved the decor and music that was playing. Never had a hot stone massage and i'd have to say that it was a pleasant surprise. The room we were in was nice and big for the two of us and it felt xtra special knowing that we were next to each other. Creaks on the floor from the old style house were very welcoming. The wifey and I have been here twice in the last 4 months. Both times we did the couple's massage - once for our anniversary and just last sunday for our Vday presents to each other. The place is above a bar and is kinda hard to find if you're just driving down Fair Oaks. Once you step in it's nice and tranquil. they give you some water with cucumber which is also a nice touch. The first time we went there was a big game on at the rose bowl so the bar downstairs was packed so we could actually hear cheering and music. Despite that the massage itself was nice. we were in a big room with 2 beds. they used a combination of swedish and deep tissue with hot and cold stone treatments. The second time we went was much better. no activity in the bar and this time I told the lady that I like a lot more pressure. Overall we've had a great experience there and with the Goldstar deal..... well that's the icing baby. read more

I can honestly say that I had THE best massage of my life there. I don't know how but the masseuse seemed to size me up from the moment I walked in, knew exactly where the stress points were, and worked them out so easily and thoroughly that I slept better that night than I have since freshman year in college. Coming from Venice (I was visiting a friend in Pasadena) I can tell you that these people put half the so called first rate masseuses in west L.A. to shame (and for half the price). The closest experience I can compare it to is finding one of those small, out of the way, mom and pop cafes in Paris and getting the best meal of your life. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE EVER!! I bought a voucher via Travelzoo in March that is due to expire 9/24/11. I called in June to set up an appointment but no one answered the phone even though they were supposed to be open per their website so I left a message. No one returned my call. I called again a week later at a different time but again during their business hours per their website - no answer. Today, I called again to see if they answered the phone and they did. I told the receptionist that I wanted to make an appoinment. She asked for when. I told her I had a voucher and then she said that they are actually booked up for weeks. I told her that my voucher expires on Saturday and her response was "You've had it for 6 months, you shouldn't have waited so long to call." I told her that I had tried before and she didn't seem to care. She offered to have the owner call me. The owner (a man) called me and said that they had been booked for 2 weeks now, I shouldn't have waited so long, I should have called more often, and that they probably couldn't understand my message. He was talking over me, cutting me off, his voice got louder, and he was pretty much telling me that I'm in the wrong for not trying hard enough to book an appointment!! Really?! Why put an expiration date on the voucher if they're not going to honor it?! Horrible experience and I haven't even set foot in the joint. ****Dear Carolyn, While I appreciate your feedback, your business partner did raise his voice and he did speak over me. That is why I would say such a thing. I understand that you are all frustrated at the last minute calls but you all need a good training in customer service as I was trying to be as polite and curteous as possible with both your receptionist and your business partner. So I do not feel that I deserved to be treated in such a rude manner even though you've had to field comments from rude people all week. Each client is individual and should be treated as such. You're running a businnes so you should try to make the experience for EVERYONE as pleasant as possible from the very first phone call. I understand if you're all booked but a better response than "You waited too long to call" would have been, "let me speak to the owners and see what we can do." Even if nothing can be done, at least I know you're trying. And a better response from your business partner than "You waited too long" would have been "I'm sorry we can't accomodate you before the expiration of your voucher but if you call Travelzoo, they may be able to help you. Other than that, there really isn't anything I can do since we're all booked." And a better response from your comment on this website would have been "I'm sorry you feel that we were rude. We're trying to accomodate a lot of people right now. I hope this does not deter you from trying us out anyway." But all I keep hearing from everyone running this business, including yourself is how it's MY fault that YOUR voucher has a deadline that YOUR business can't honor. That's not my fault. I don't care if the first time I called was on the day it expires, upon purchasing said voucher it was understood by ALL parties involved that I had until the expiration date to use it. And just to be clear, I told your receptionist and your business partner that I only left one message because I did not think I had to keep a detailed telephone log of my attempts to redeem the voucher but in actuality, I left more than one message and called more than 3 times. I didn't think the number of attempts mattered so much after speaking with your staff since no one seemed to care that I tried at all. *****Dear Carolyn, Yes I have suggestions. 1)Honor the voucher passed the expiration date or 2) Refund what I paid for the voucher. I think it's bad business to keep money that was paid to you for a service that you're refusing to provide. Whether you CAN'T or WON'T provide the service doesn't matter. The fact that it's already paid for and all I'm hearing from your company is "too bad" is a shame. The fact that no one from your business has suggested one of the two options that I listed makes me wonder in the integrity of the business as whole. By the way, I contacted Travelzoo per your business partner and your receptionist's suggestion and this is what Chelsea at Travelzoo wrote, "The merchant issued your voucher for this Local Deal and, as such, is responsible for all customer service in connection with its promotional offer. The merchant is responsible for honoring this voucher past the expiration date." So you should probably stop telling people to contact travelzoo. read more

My husband bought me a massage here as a birthday gift. 2 days later, I'm still feeling great. I believe I had the Restorative Massage along with the cold facial at the end. Honestly, some parts of the massage were a little painful, such as when Darrin pushed super hard on various pressure points. That being said, he was very receptive when I communicated the pain level (and mostly it was very relaxing). For me, it felt kind of like a Thai massage in that it hurts when you get it but then it feels amazing after. This was my first time getting a professional massage by a male, and initially I was a little freaked out but Darrin was extremely professional and felt very safe. read more
