THE FOOD: Carne asada burrito and carne asada fries - there are few things more iconic about California Mexican food than carne asada (maybe fish) - and this place does the carne asada RIGHT. The meat is perfectly seasoned, tender, delicious. Unlike other carne asada I have tried in oh such a myriad of places, this was actually memorable. I can recall the awesome flavor just looking at the photos. Menudo - I saw someone eating a bowl of this at one of the tables and it looked so good it actually prompted me to try menudo for the very first time. Whoa. That broth. OOF. Shrimp diablo - I have a bit of a thing about trying this dish everywhere I go and I was super happy I tried this one. The shrimp and spicy sauce were fantastic. And the white sauce was soooo good. Made me seriously regret not trying a fish burrito here. Next time. Breakfast burritos - the steak egg cheese potato was fantastic, but my god, I could eat the Hash Brown (eggs cheese sausage bacon hash browns) every damn day. Always saw a line at this place when driving on Mission Gorge Road and just had to get it a try. Ordered the shrimp taco, Carne Asada Soft Taco, and surf and turf burrito. I have mixed feelings. They have exceptional jamica and their green salsa is good. The shrimp and campechana cocktails are delicious, but they sometimes skimp on the shrimp and octopus. The fish rolled tacos are really good, but they use ground beef for the beef rolled tacos (thumbs down on that), and they dilute the guacamole with sour cream (gross). This place had amazing food a few years ago. Now just try to imagine Chile Releno made with mozzarella and American yellow cheese. May as well eat a hamburger with uncooked potato substituting the beef patty. Very small portion for $7. We were not able to taste fish in the fish tacos we ordered, and it was probably because of the old grease in the deep fryer. The aftertaste hit us like an atomic bomb 20 minutes after we left. It was so fire and well proportioned with the fries/cheese/sour cream/ bean ratio. I heard they haven't been as good as when I was a kid but I was very pleased with what I ordered this time around. Thought I would try Cotijas since I feel like casadoras has gone down hill, I used to go here years ago and apparently they've also gone down hill I ordered 3 burritos and rolled tacos with CREAMY guac and I get all the way home to find my order messed up. Then proceeded to tell me to bring back the food and they'll fix it I live on the other side of Santee. She was extremely rude and made it seem as if I messed it up not them. Ferny's was closed tonight so I ordered dinner from here. I got adobado fries, chile relleno, pollo asada burrito, and a chile relleno burrito. Everything was delicious! It felt like they gave us 3 pounds of food in the fries box, it was heavy! The burritos were pretty big too. The chile relleno burrito was made with beans. I know everyone makes it differently so sub it out with rice if you don't like beans. Call in your order so it's ready for you when you get there and don't have to wait!
