I have found a great place in Cottman's of Durham. The man that runs the place, Jody, is a wonderful and trustworthy person to have to take care of you and your car. He patiently explains every question that I have and he always comes through with what he says and tells me. I never leave there feeling uncomfortable. He makes sure that I get the best of care, and there are not too many places that I can boast of that. I can also boast that he goes the extra mile with taking care of me after hours. They called me the next day around noon pickup. Yesterday I stopped by Jiffy Lube because they had forgotten to reset my oil light after my last oil change. While I was there I mentioned I had smelled a burning rubber smell recently so asked them to check it. They said it looked like my transmission was leaking so they referred me to Cottman's. I didn't know they normally require appointments so I just went in yesterday afternoon and explained the situation to the woman at the front desk. The owner was in the back and heard what I said and told her I needed to be moved to the front of the line. If I truly had a leak it was extremely flammable so he wanted them to immediately check it instead of sending me away to come back later because there was a chance my car could catch on fire and he didn't want to risk that happening. A mechanic immediately came and checked my car. After their inspection they said I had a few oil leaks, it wasn't my transmission and I could drive it without risk of it catching on fire. They referred me to the mechanic next door since they don't fix oil leaks there. While I didn't end up getting anything done, I really appreciated their sense of urgency and concern. The inspection they did was free which was nice. If I have any transmission issues in the future (which fingers crossed I don't) I would absolutely come back here. read more

I've worked with store Mgr Jason Rhodes via text,email, and phone at the E.Indepence Blvd location in Charlotte NC to have my transmission replaced because the car wouldn't start. After I paid nearly 3K in total,the car runs however it stalls, makes a noise, and the check engine light is on (which it didn't do any of this prior to the car being repaired). I've texted Jason at 704-987-8666, I've emailed the store at www.cottmanofcharlotte.com and cottmanclt.com@gmail.com more than thee times regarding my concerns as early as the next day after I picked it up and still have yet to get a response. I took the car to a different shop and was informed the check engine light is one for something that's happening with the transmission. I am utterly pissed at the level of unprofessionalism and disregard and this simply isn't right. I want my money back or my car repaired THE CORRECT WAY. read more

I had a transmission overheating light show up on my car and had it towed to Cottman, referred there from Noble. Apparently one of the two clutches in my 2012 Ford focus hatchback had gone bad and honestly, it had probably been bad since I bought the car because it's always had this slip in the gearshifting and especially just starting out. It would seem to sputter now and then. After the replacement of the clutch, my car is running more smoothly than it ever has. I'm truly grateful for the work that they did. And it cost me about 2/3 what it would have cost at the dealership. My car has over 200,000 miles on it and I'm hoping it'll make it to 300,000. read more

Cottman Transmission was an absolute pleasure to work with! We brought my sons 1995 Chevy truck for transmission issues and the team rebuilt the transmission and kept us up to date throughout the process. A couple weeks later the truck started doing something weird so they told us to bring it back. What it was doing had NOTHING to do with the transmission work they'd done but they investigated the issue and fixed it! They get a few starts beaus the work got done and the car now runs appropriately. But craftsmanship and effort (and maybe honesty) are in question. First, a gentleman on the phone said the part needed was not in stock. He stated that he had called around and asked about it. I asked if he called the dealership to which he replied he had. He claimed the dealership said they didn't have the part. I called the dealership myself immediately after our conversation and was surprised to hear that they DID have the part. So, I had to go to the dealership myself, pick up the part, and deliver it to Cottman Transmission. The gentleman on the phone either lied or didn't know who he was calling. When I got the car back, part of the passenger seat cover was stuck beneath the center console. The driver seat cover had been removed and replaced backwards. So, the technician obviously knew the seats had covers on them. The technician's reinstalment of the center console, with the seat cover partially trapped beneath it, is clear evidence of lazy or hasty work. To free the seat cover, I had to tear it. When I called the store to inform them of this, they offered an initial apology but quickly became very defensive. In an economy where we have options, it's probably best to choose another shop. read more

Taylor and the Cottman transmission team are absolute life savers!! I visited this shop yesterday after several days of transmission problems in my 2016 Honda. Because my car has never had any issues, I was pretty anxious about price. I was extra anxious considering I have an upcoming 15 hour road trip. Taylor greeted me with professionalism and empathy. He assured me that he would fix my car up. And he met and exceeded those promises. My car was fixed and out of the shop in less than 4 hours -- and it drives better than ever. The best part?? The repairs cost me under 100$. Other estimates were ranging 300-500$. Needless to say, this is the place to go if you want COMPETENT, PROFESSIONAL, AFFORDABLE, TRUSTWORTHY, and KIND service. I initially had reservations about this location given the comment alluding to racial insensitivity. I brought up this concern with the person at the service desk. He found out that person who made the comment no longer works there. That's a relief. The techs keep my car for the day but could not find anything wrong with it. these guys are pretty terrible they worked on my truck transmission last year. It was leaking, they put some thing around the seal to make it stop. Not ling after, it is still leaking and after bringing it to another shop, they told me that they basically did not repair anything. charged me close to 500 bucks for a tune up that I did not ask them to do. then they closed the location near me and moved somewhere else to defraud other people. We have taken our vehicle into Cottman's twice! The first time, we were told by another mechanic that we needed a new transmission after having our transmission replaced a year prior. We described our issue to Jodie over the phone. He told us what could possibly be the problem but told us to bring it in so it could be diagnosed. We brought it in, it was checked out the same day and fixed by the next day!! The customer service is PHENOMENAL!! The next time we brought in our vehicle we noticed that a ticking sound was coming from our engine. One of the mechanics immediately said what it sounded like but said he would check it out to be sure. It was checked out the same day and they immediately began working on our vehicle! Honest, straightforward, and great service. I went to three other mechanics in town and was told three different reasons for why my transmission was having problems. Then I was recommended to Jodie at Cottmans. I called him up and he took me in the next morning. As I waiting in the office (for a lot shorter time), I could see him and his staff examine the car much more throughly than any of the others did. Had my 1995 truck for one week and 1/2. Said it was fixed. $300+ dollars. Broke down 1 week later. He didn't even want to tow it back to his shop. Had someone else look at it and he discover that transmission fluid was in the brake line. Cottman said it was new brake fluid they were using. It was RED. Anyway, he finally agreed to tow it back to his shop but not right way. Three days later. Long story short and after $300 more dollars it appears to be working thus far. Oh yeah, the brake fluid is now clear, go figure. Guess the new brake fluid they were using was not so good. Yeah right. Me thinks something is rotten in Denmark. Never again!!!! I had a check engine light on and went to a Sears Auto Center for a free reading. They said it came up as a transmission issues and recommended Cottman in Durham. I made a same-day appointment with Jody over the phone. Jody was very helpful in explaining the nuts and bolts (literally) of what was going wrong with my transmission. He also found an issue with an axle (and did the work on that without charging extra labor). Aside from the cost (which seems to just be the horror of transmission failure), I had a good experience with them! The "loaner" car he gave me to drive free while my car was being worked on for 3-5 days left something to be desired (200k+ miles, broken rear view mirror, cracked windshield, and I could barely move the seat to fit right), but free is free (and I didn't want to spend extra on a rental given the cost of the service). All in all, I recommend Jody and the Cottman Transmission team! read more

In December I had a lot of work done on my transmission by these guys, and it was not a good experience. About a month ago my transmission had trouble - all the sudden it had a huge leak, and somehow the front axle had separated from the transmission. Didn't hit anything with the car, so this seemed bizarre. This was very troubling, but since the transmission was under warranty I took it back. I was pleased to see that this location is under new management. Jeff, took care of me right away and he even gave me an extra breakfast burrito he had when I dropped my car off. He had only been there a couple of weeks, and was short on staff so it took them 3 weeks for them to get my car fixed. This was frustrating, and after about a week I got a call from Jeff saying that the mechanic that was working on my car quit his job and my key was lost. So I had to bring another car key over to the shop. I was upset as they weren't sure what exactly what was wrong with the car, what they were responsible for, what I was responsible for, the cost, and how long it would take to fix. After my car had been sitting there 2 weeks I got a nice call from the Jody, the General Manager in Greensboro. By the way this was not the same Jody (store mgr) that I worked with in December, thank goodness. Jody apologized for the key being lost, and offered me a rental car and really listened to my concerns. Even though I felt like there was a lack of communication and a misunderstanding from Jeff early on (ie at first he thought my transmission was not under warranty), he was always patient and professional with me. Jeff really came through in the end and his communication improved a lot. Finally my car was fixed, but I still didn't know what it was going to cost. I was expecting to have to pay for the axle, however Jeff told me there was no charge and that all he wanted was a happy customer. I was pleasantly surprised, and I appreciate Jeff and Jody for footing the bill for all my troubles. No store is perfect all the time, but these guys did what was right and I'm thankful for their help! read more

They are absolutely the most incompetent mechanics I have ever used. I went to them because they were recommended by my regular mechanic months prior to this and they offer a 10% military discount. The bill for a new transmission was $3987 and I only got a $200 discount. Every week i asked Jeff about the rest of my discount and every week he said he would have to get it approved by the boss and he would call me, but he never returned any of my calls. When I picked up my 2010 Subaru Forester it made a lot of racket and I was told the noise would stop as the gears meshed together. I took it back for my 2 week check up and was told everything looked good. I asked about the noise and they were like, what noise? I said didn't you check it out? They said we only do a bolt check on the follow up, but they did check it when I told them to do so and they told me the noise was from nothing they did. Over the next couple of days the noise got so loud I could no longer drive for Uber. I took it to Firestone and when i went to pick it up he showed me that all but one of the bolts were missing from the exhaust cover and the one bolt was loose. They couldn't fix it because it would negate the transmission warranty. If you remember, I had just taken it in for a bolt check, yet the bolts were missing. I took it back to have the bolts put in. Then I got another noise and before i could take it back again the clutch fork broke blowing out some other parts which Cottman's refused to admit was their fault. Firestone repaired it, but it cost me $1100. My mechanic showed me it was because the pilot bolt had been installed wrong even though Cottman's told me they never touched it when they refused the repair; however, they could not possibly have repaired the transmission without removing and reinstalling it. After all that was fixed I was still getting a noise and my mechanic told me it was from the transmission even though Cottman's had denied it. I took it back to Cottman's who had to install all new transmission parts and then tried to tell me that it was the fault of the Subaru parts they had used which they stated, "sometimes have that problem." My mechanic told me they no longer referred people to Cottman's because they had become incompetent, but I did not find out soon enough. Between November and February I lost $100s of dollars as an Uber driver due the incompetence of the Cottman mechanics, not to mention the thousands of dollars in repairs. In addition, I was told they would clean my car because they got grease all over the dashboard and and around the floor and door of the driver's side. Jeff rubbed it with a cloth that did absolutely nothing. The grease stains are still in the car. read more
